2016 Macbook Pro - Loose Touch ID Button

  • This video is an example of an issue with the Touch ID button on identical 2016 15" Macbook Pros.
You can hear the difference between the two. The 1st Macbook Pro button feels solid when tapped (no pressed). The 2nd has a distinct variance to it, making it feel hollow and cheap.
I will be contacting Apple regarding this matter, but there are several Apple Community posts on the issue

Oh my god I thought mine is already too loose and noisy, until I see this video...

Wow, thanks so much for making this video! This really bugged me at first but I've more or less gotten used to it, I feel like a ton of the new MacBooks have this issue so it's not so uncommon. - The button / sensor still works 100% fine though, which is the most important part.
What's interesting though is that the first button you showed already seems a bit loose, I've tried it on some other MacBooks where the button is 100% firm when not being pressed down! (Like the home button on an iPhone.)

Giang Vu Yea I had an unrelated keyboard issue and Apple replaced it, which included the touch ID

I had this issue after the Apple Genius Bar replaced my logic board. Then I bring my MBP to Genius Bar again. They replaced another logic board for me, but still got the issue. Now I just try to forget this loose button because at least it works for recognising my fingerprint.

Replacing logic board for loose touch ID? What kind of fucking repair is that. I Hope you spent so much money you regret it even year forward

hey just wondering, after you got it resolved is there still some very slight movement/clicking when you tap it or is it supposed to be 100% stable. I just noticed that mine would slightly make a noise when tapping and move around a little if tapped towards the edges and wanted to make sure that was normal (similar to the first clip MacBook)

Pranav Patel I’d so there was still some play to it, but no where near as loud

Okay gotcha, mine has play but its more similar to the first MacBook you showed in the video not the second, just wanted to make sure it wasn't supposed to be 100% stable

@@Ernest_EA So I actually had to swap my MacBook for another due to a different issue, and the Touch ID still has the approximately same amount of wiggle to it as the last so I am assuming its normal. Some people have theirs completely tight but some have them slightly loose and it doesn't seem to be much of an issue. I would say my wiggle is closer to that of the first wiggle in the video, no where near the second MacBooks wiggle in the video.

@@Ernest_EA Mine doesn't really have a clicky noise, I would say go to the Genius Bar since its under warranty probably and ask them, it would depend on how loud of a click it is
