I’ve had both an Android(Samsung Note 9) and an iPhone(12). Had a case and screen protector on both, and never had issues. Android is arguably more repair friendly depending on what phone you get, but something like a Galaxy Fold would probably cost a lot to repair
I think there is a stigma with Android phones because there are some really cheap ones with poor build quality. An iPhone, for better or worse, you know what you’re getting. Their repairability has gotten a lot worse with newer models tho, and Apple charges a lot for repairs.

The iPhone had battery issues which I replaced with a $15 kit on year 2 and it worked flawlessly for another 5 years til the storage was completely filled with system updates you can't delete. Didn't want that bs anymore so I swapped to Android. This s8 I forsee using for another 3-5 years as it runs well and I got a microsd for $50 for another 500GB. Good for her if it's enough for her, but a phone is something you use every day, it's normal for people to not want to have a slow phone. She also have her work phone anyway, her iPhone from cover. A big problem is that more and more countries are shutting down 2G or 3G networks that those older phones may only support. Hell, newer routers stop using older WiFi standards due to security issues or technological improvements, completely cutting off any sort of networking ability for old phones. I've got a similary-aged then-high-end Japanese Android phone that only used 3.5G at best that suffers from a lack of phone signal. She'll eventually have no choice but to upgrade anyways, since by 2026, Japan will have shut down their 3G network.

Longest I ever used a phone was a $170 Motorola I got back in 2017, It lasted 3 1/2 years before the power button button broke. By the time i replaced it, I was lucky to get more than 3 hours on a single charge. when it ran out of battery, I had to use the bootloader combined with a command line tool to boot it. Then the bootloader button broke too and it became impossible to use it.

tbf with the older phones I think it's easier to do than with newer ones. The thing that usually goes first with phones is the battery and old samsung galaxy androids have a battery compartment you can easily remove and change the battery so if you don't abuse your phone the only thing that's a real detriment is that it's slow and loses app access as they require newer firmware versions. If you only use your phone for talk/text/map/browser it's easily doable.
I have a galaxy s4 that still works to this day and has only needed to change batteries ($20 replacement) twice since 2013. I use it as an alarm clock nowadays since it's too slow to do anything else with but it still works just fine.

Dang 8 years she got me beat ahah. I used a s7 active for 5-6 years until it losts its buttons, had lcd streaks, and battery couldn't charge as fast as it discharged. Kept the phone so long since it was dependable working as a handy man, since the active series are built to take hits (which it did when I fell off a latter directly into the corner of a minifridge below where the phoen took the corner hit while in my chest pocket making my ribs facture - not break).
Finally I saw that they released a new active series successor with the xcover pro, and nabbed one. Really like it since it has removable batteries, and its just as durable. Not that fast, but its pretty dependable atm.

I had to upgrade my iPhone 4S around the time of the 6S because it had slowed down to the point that I couldn't answer calls before they went to voice mail.

I can understand that, especially since she doesn't game (she has a no gacha stance). Only time I upgraded mine is network changes, and before that going from an old phone to a smart one.

To me that timeline is still relevant and dare I say, better. Same for how I own a 2005 Tahoe, a 2007 Audi and a 2011 Jeep. New ones aren’t always the better.
