    I am so happy this video exists, it was literally perfect.
    I was going to respond to a recent community post of your recommending portable setups but figured it would be out of your scope and certainly didn't expect you to absolutely knock it out of the park like you did!
    It even answered my questions about if a touchscreen would work with the steamdeck!
    My only, final thought is if there is a way to manage controller Bluetooth connections better than resyncing every single time I switch consoles.

    This looks like pretty fun setup although a bit bulky for me. I travel with my laptop for work on long trips so I think for a long trip, my laptop with windows and batocera in dual boot would work best. Already have 15 inch screen, battery life, HDI output to plugin to TV if available, and i can play windows and retro games on the same unit. However I like with you do, try many setups and see what works best, I can definitively see myself with something like this for a quick one or two day trip where I only take my "bare" necessities with he :)

    This has given me an urge to buy a product or two from this review. I would say having both the screens shown here would be worth having for someone who travels often, the more expensive one would be for home use of course, while the inexpensive would be for travel, lot cheaper to replace if it gets broke or, god forbid, stolen.

    Definitely we are living in a great time for personal entertainment when traveling.
    Personally, my business travel hotel kit includes my phone (SD865) a BT gamesir clamp-on controller, a usbc alt mode dongle (to connect to hotel TV if available) and sometimes an Xgimi Mogo Pro projector (when I know the hotel TVs are crap.)
    Gaming on the whole wall is great.
    I also bring a quart size ziplock freezer bag... Fill that sucker up with ice from the ice machine, seal it tight, then sit it on top of my phone and I can game for a long time without worrying that the phone will heat throttle.

    If it's anything like playing switch in tabletop mode, I can say that you have to crane your neck to look at it straight on and it kind of hurts after a while. I use a switch lite as my primary switch and I find that much better. But this is def cool if you find it comfortable. I remember getting my first portable monitor for my ITX PC. I spent quite some time and money trying to design and create some sort of stand for the monitor. I've had the innocn screen for 9 months, it has a feature that cuts out blue light and it's great for my sensitive eyes. I have to wear blue blockers when playing on my other screens or after a couple days/long sessions my eyes start to bother me. The price was worth it for that feature. Plus it looks great playing Metroid dread and running Samsung dex

    This sounds like exactly what I had in mind for a Steam Deck fighting game setup. Do you have any means to measure input delay differences between these monitors? As I understand it, a 1ms response time can be totally divorced from input delay.

    I initially watched this just to support the channel, but based on your points and now that I have a Steam Deck... I think if I went on a non-austere deployment, this type of screen and that charger would be ideal additions for my personal items. I think the RP3+ or my modded 3DS would probably be my picks for an austere deployment, though.

  • @polarized8708
    @polarized8708 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I did the similar for one month, but I like your wall charger idea, even I m not sure it will break your switch someday (like some of this hubs maybe did in the past - have no experience with it, because none of my usb c hubs get a TV signal).
    I have a Innocn non OLED TV 1080P with touch (pretty useless for me) and a wall mount, where I can I simply hang my monitor in. Then I have the opportunity to to connected my smartphone, Odin or Switch and have access to to a 1TB SSD.
    Sadly, my smartphone cant get retroarch to load games from SSD and my Odin could not connect to a FullHD TV via USB C, because it has to be 4K...
    So I get around with an HDMI switch and stored a lot of cable in a box and need some cables twice.
    So I wish I looked into this earlier.

    I wish more of these monitors would just toss in a couple USB ports to use for something like mouse/keyboard that wouldn't draw much power. With something like the Steam Deck that only has one port it would be handy to have the functionality of a dock built in to just have less cables devices to lug around. You have to make sure the monitor has pass through power if it doesn't have a battery because some do not and will just drain your device.

    I recently picked up a portable monitor from amazon for working on the go (traveling for work). It has 2 usb-c port that have power passthrough. So only 2 usb c to c cables gets the steam deck playing on it and charging. I'd suggest you look into doing that so you don't have to have the separate power/hdmi for the monitor as well.

  • @arjay1582
    @arjay1582 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    I understand the concept, but if we're gonna go this far I know an OLED gaming laptop would just be an overall better solution for a setup like this. It's cleaner and more travel friendly, windows 10 native support, doesn't require any cables, has a built in keyboard and trackpad good enough for multimedia watching, the whole setup would fit in your lap and be stable. It would be more expensive, but the steam deck is $600 for the top model, and 4K oled portable monitors are around $700. You can get an OLED gaming laptop for around $1100 used at best buy depending on specs. I saw one with a 2070 super for $1108; HP OMEN, and a 2070 super would massively be better at running 4K OLED than a steam deck. The biggest downside is the monitor would be tied to the laptop only. But if you already have an OLED switch, than it would be perfect I think.

    • @michaelcorcoran8768

      Yeah, portable monitors are just not really financially practical apparently at this scale.

    • @szyl

      If you want windows 10 as a priority then yeah probably, but for my personal needs, Linux is not only more than enough, but honestly preferable as I personally like what it has to offer (I understand that for 99% of people windows is preferred though and I can understand why).
      No need to go this overboard on the screen though as was done in this video, you can always get something much cheaper, at least for me personally 4k is overkill and 1080p is more than good enough, but that differs based on preference and what you play.
      The big difference for me is that I don't like using a laptop portably. Like on planes on car rides laptops are a pain to use, but something like a switch works fine. Pretty excited for my steam deck for this reason. A switch with its dock isn't really portable either, but you generally only take that with you when you have a reason to, similar to how something like this screen display would be.
      If any of what I said here isn't true though, I 100% agree that a laptop is the far superior way to go (like if you're ok with using it protably, find one with good parts + battery life, prefer win10, etc.).

    • @DMSBrian24
      @DMSBrian24 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@szyl yeah but you can still get a laptop and install steamOS on it or any other linux distro at this point and just carry the laptop instead of carrying a portable screen around with your steam deck *and* a laptop, i mean the deck on its own can be a great replacement if you don't rly need to do work on the fly and just wanna game but i don't see a reason to carry a portable screen with your deck instead of just using a small laptop since you're already sacrificing portability by carrying the screen around

    • @szyl
      @szyl ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DMSBrian24 I tried getting linux working on my laptop a few months ago and had tons of issues with it not working with my hardware and screen tearing n shit. I also genuinely hate the form factor of laptops, having a disconnected keyboard just feels right to me. Like I was saying though, the portable screen would just be brought with me in situations I know I need it, and with the backpack I carry my laptop around in anyway the size difference won't be that much.

    • @skullnbk5179
      @skullnbk5179 ปีที่แล้ว

      A flaw to what you said is that gaming laptops in specific usually face problems such as overheating and life of those components inside it. For me having a gaming laptop was a pain after while due to the heat build up. the whole point of this video wasnt to convince you to get the Steam deck AND the monitor its showing you the monitor in general the use of it depends completely on you. These monitors can also be used with phones and consoles. But like Szyl said its definitely overboard for 4k60fps 1080 is more than enough for everyone but the benefit would be its battery without needing to be plugged in which eliminates one of your concerns about cables considering it would be just one cable.

    It has it up and downs, if is just you traveling just buy the cable to connect it to the TV all have HDMI connections, and go thru the menu to change it to desired HDMI port if not disconnect the one that has the cable box and connect it there, way bigger screen.
    Or if you have a some what good laptop the screen is as big as a laptop just get emulator for the PC or you really want a screen and you have an old laptop take it apart buy the controller for the specific screen and you could connect thru HDMI.

    • @RetroGameCorps
      @RetroGameCorps  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely, I use my 1080p monitor sometimes as an iTunes display while I am working. I like having it as a dedicated screen sometimes.

      Don't forget you could probably set this up as a second monitor for workflows, even from a laptop. If it's a workplace environment, like a desk you regularly work at, you might want to look at some sort of stand and cabling system you can leave there to just plug and use a portable monitor with. I use to use a GPD win 1 with a portable monitor and bluetooth keyboard at uni when I needed to get some heavier editing done. :-)

    For whatever reason, when I brought the OLED one, there was no brightness control and the display was rather dim even for an OLED. Had to return it. Got the Samsung OLED tablet for a little bit more which has incredible brightness being the same panel as the Samsung Galaxy phones.

    Hi Russ. Love your videos. Been watching for some time. Just wanted your opinion. For exactly you use case scenarios, would a 15.6” OLED portable display BUT non 4K but every other spec exactly the same as the 4K display be more practical? This same company sells one at US$350 but I managed to get one from a local Singapore company with similar specs for US$310. I was wondering whether the 4K would make a difference compared to 1080p on a 15.6” display at close range and whether it’s worth the extra US$200-250. I do want an OLED and am willing to pay the difference for the OLED over LCD.

    • @RetroGameCorps
      @RetroGameCorps  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Kenneth, I don't think there is a major distinction between 1080p and 4K on a 15.6" monitor unless you get really close to it and try to compare pixels. If you are able to get a 1080p OLED with similar specs and save $200, I think you will be more than pleased!

    I tried this exact monitor but my model had insane color bleed/chromatic aberration. Every white on black pixel had red on one side and blue on the other, and the low resolution made this super noticeable.

    Before I spontaneously buy that AWOW for my Steam Deck coming tomorrow, how well does the AWOW hold up in bright conditions? I was watching another video and they said 500 nits is a huge difference compared to 300 or 250. What's your opinion on that? Is that as big of a deal as a video I've watched? I'll typically be playing my Steam Deck indoors, at my desk at work, or while out traveling on my motorcycle.

    • @RetroGameCorps
      @RetroGameCorps  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It does well in indoor situations, I have never had a complaint about the brightness. I often don't even turn it up all the way. I don't think it would be as good for outdoors, though.

    I use an Asus portable monitor that has the battery like the bigger monitor, but is the same resolution and size as the small monitor, and is $300. It was really useful when I needed to hook something up to my portable Deskmini A300 computer on the go, as well as hooking it to my Steam Deck and Laptop. I should try hooking my full size switch up to it, I only took my Switch Lite on the trip, and it doesn't work with external displays.
    I'd love to see Asus make an OLED version of their battery portable monitor. 1080p is enough, but I wouldn't mind paying another $50-100 for an oled.
    I have a cheaper monitor as well, but it's USB-C only and doesn't support HDMI, so really the only thing I can plug it into is my laptop. It is very nice to have both portable monitors though because it lets me have a triple-screen setup on the go.

    Isn't is still true that any power source other than the Nintendo charger has a risk over damaging the switch since they went of spec of USB-PD? I still worry about that so I have a 2nd Nintendo dock and charger just for travel and bedroom use rather than a cheaper 3rd party one. This looks great and is probably perfect for every other device though.

      It should work in terms of driving the signal through to a monitor, but I am not sure if the 30W power delivery will be enough to adequately charge the Steam Deck. The Steam Deck charger is rated at 45W (one of the reasons why I went with this other plug).
