The bbq sauce that you pointed out you don’t like , will still be good to use as a marinade for a roast beef or a brisket or even a whole chicken. If it’s too thick, just add a bit of wine vinegar to thin it out. The marinade will tenderize and make your beef or poultry flavourful.
Try putting either grape leaves or bay leaves in your dill pickles. The bay leaves really helped mine. Not super crisp but much more crisp than without them.

Apple suggestions for canning: apple pie filling (YUM), apple slices with cinnamon for fried apples, and apple chunks with golden raisins (also with cranberries or cherries).
Mom made muslin curtains to hang over the fronts of the canning shelves in the cellar. They hung from wooden dowels that set on bent nails at the top of the shelves and extended to the floor. Daddy white washed the cellar walls. I love your cellar and you have given me ideas of what to add to our shelves. I also love how you labeled your canned goods on the shelves. Something I learned when using clear jel for apple pie filling ~ use 1 1/2” head space. The clear jel swells and needs a bit more room to expand. Beautiful larder!! Love the video and thank you so much for sharing ❤
Thanks for the tip. I had seen a video where they said to leave a 'generous 1 inch head space', so luckily I did leave a bit more than 1 inch. There are so many little tricks with canning. I love learning from comments...thanks!
So comforting and beautiful! I used to live in an 1898 farmhouse that had such a space...you have made such a wonderful edition to your home with such a larder. Far as chicken broth...I became sold to using chicken feet for my bone broth. Very cheap to buy at the store in comparison to trying to get enough chicken carcass to make a decent batch. Good luck and thanks for sharing!
"Comforting" is the perfect word to describe how it makes me feel. I love old farmhouses. They have a charm that can't be found in the newer homes. Someone else had mentioned chicken feet. I'll definitely give that a try. THANKS!
Lots of apples left, make apple pie filler. I do love fruit pies my grandmother used to make my all-time favorite, which was apple and blackberry pie. Now that was magical.

Hi, im new here, but wanted to praise your canning efforts. Beautiful pantry. I especially love the flowers. The statice is pretty in jugs , crocks, etc.
I get what you mean about the "feel" of the larder before the whitewash. I thought of something after watching the video. The whitewash will keep the dust at bay and brighten it up but maybe you could do a light wash of color back onto the walls to still give it that cozy feel. Like a paint or stain wash? Might be a fun project to do during the winter months! I absolutely love your channel and how down to earth you both are!
That sounds wonderful....we love mangoes. We visited Australia 15 years ago and really enjoyed our time there. We went to Sydney and also visited some sheep farms south and west of there.

So glad you found us. We did a video on the blackberry syrup a while ago. (link below) The only ingredient I would leave out is the butter. ADORO casas antigas. As novas casas simplesmente não têm o mesmo charme. Alguém mencionou pés de galinha. Com certeza terei isso em mente na próxima vez que fizer caldo. OBRIGADO!
How about putting up a compression rod and hang a curtain on your shelving it will keep the dust out? I am envious of your limestone cellar, it’s amazing! Wish I had something like this!
Someone else suggested that. I'm thinking about it, but I also love walking down and seeing all of the jars. Hopefully the limewash will really cut down on the dust. Thanks for the suggestion.
My family loves canned chicken soup, so we always have a lot of bones.I also can just chicken for meals so bones from that also. I get about a gallon and a half from one chicken carcass. If you let it cook at lest two days you get really rich broth with a little acv, very mineral rich. I do adobo pork, taco meat, stew, potato sausage soup, stew meat, brisket, Italian sausage. I like to have the meats ready more than anything else.
Sounds wonderful! I need to can more meat. It has been handy to have chicken and ground beef on hand, but I need to try a few of your suggestions. Thanks!
We have strong discussions ;) over whether or not to whitewash the stone walls in our cellar. Decision needs to be made asap so I am happy to hear about your whitewash application.
We did a video about whitewashing the root cellar. The mortar down there was really starting to crumble. (It's 180 years old). The whitewash REALLY secured the mortar and will help to keep it preserved in the future. It's not easy to do, but for us it was definitely worth it. Here's the video about the root cellar. th-cam.com/video/Wv62LFQ1q-s/w-d-xo.html
Love the pantry.. Best one I've seen and love your 1840 home. Have you ever tried Tomato Jam and Tomato preserves... My mother in-law used to make the preserves and hubby couldn't get enough of it..
Believe it or not, we've never caught a mouse in the basement. I've caught them in the kitchen, but they don't seem to be interested in the basement. Living in an old farmhouse we're always on the lookout for mice. (and have traps set) Thanks for watching.
We rehydrate the barley in water overnight first (I use just 1 tablespoon of barley per liter of soup) because it will change in volume. Make sure the ratio solids to broth doesn't exceed 2/3. Also, like many other things in canning, barley is one that you have to decide what is acceptable in your kitchen ;-)
My family loves kielbasa, potatoes onions, lime beans and kraut goes in when all is done, that way my kraut warms up as it mingles with everything else without cooking, I don't want to kill the good stuff that's in my refrigerated kraut.
@@waardenburgfamilyfarm4764 I picked my cabbage on Christmas day this past year and got my kraut started late December or early January, after fermenting 3 to 4 weeks and many tastings, I put my rings on to seal the jars( no canning them), in the extra frig in my garage they set there until I use each up. Today I have about a forth of a cup left, my garden has cabbage planted in it now, by the way I'm in Kentucky. Good luck to you, from the Piles family!
I buy or raise whole chickens, roast, eat, then make bone broth with the scraps and bones. You can also buy chicken portions on sale with bones, pressure cook, then have chicken and broth for canning. I do both equally. You can even pressure cook frozen pieces or whole chickens.
Can you show how to make whitewash? I remember my Mom making it when I was a child. Most people in our community used to whitewash the stones in front of their houses. They did it once a year and it looked great.
The details of making the whitewash is in this video. There was a lot to learn, but we're thrilled with the end result. th-cam.com/video/Wv62LFQ1q-s/w-d-xo.html
Someone else suggested a butcher.....I'm going to look into it. I did make some apple pie filling and I think I'm still going to can some plain apples. We're also going to experiment with making cider. Thanks for the ideas.
I wouldn't be able to do that until next summer. I don't have any fall cabbage planted and probably won't need any sauerkraut util then. I'll definitely put it on a list of videos to do. Thanks for watching!

The US doesn't have an approved recipe with raisins. but Bernadin might, because I know they had a mock cherry pie filling using grapes and dried cranberries
Don't know if you can can applesauce with raisins. But do know that if you layers apple slices, raw cane sugar and a dozen or so raisins in a jar (like a trifle) and put it in a dark cool place for 5-6 months (Easter), you have Apple Brandy. (non-distilled) We're not drinkers but. I do make tinctures.
The bbq sauce that you pointed out you don’t like , will still be good to use as a marinade for a roast beef or a brisket or even a whole chicken. If it’s too thick, just add a bit of wine vinegar to thin it out. The marinade will tenderize and make your beef or poultry flavourful.

I love the fact that I'm learning so many new things at this stage in life. (and am able to share it with my grandchildren.) The sweet pickles I make do stay crisp, but I haven't found a dill recipe that stays crisp. Thanks for the encouragement!
I keep most of my jars in the original box with the plastic. So much easier to dust!
That's a possibility. I may wait to see how much dust there is now that the mortar will be held in place with the whitewash.
Impressive!
Thanks!!
I did a apple jam with raisins one year and it was awesome!
That does sound good. My mom used to make an apple/raisin pie and I've loved the combination of apples and raisins every since.
AWESOME !!!
Thanks!
Just found you're channel looking forward to binge watch you're video
So glad you found us. Enjoy!
There are stands for the good bins. They stack vertically
Thanks, I'll have to look into that!
Uau…!!!
OBRIGADO!
Nice start on your pantry
Yeah, I'm anxious to get the rest of the things made so it's completely filled up. Thanks for watching.
It’s beautiful
Thanks!
NEW SUB❤ I LOVE THIS ROOM!
IT WOULD BE A DREAM COME TRUE TO HAVE THIS ROOM,LOOK AT ALL YOUR HARD WORK.😊
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks! I'm so glad you found us. I love this room and enjoy looking at all of the jars. All of the food and flowers are beautiful to me. 😊
Lovely!
Thanks!
Love this video ❤
Thanks!
Azure Standard has chicken frame and backs from Mary’s Organic chickens
Someone else suggested that. I do buy from Azure, but never thought of looking for chicken bones.
@@waardenburgfamilyfarm4764 Yes, I saw it and it was great. It spurred the conversation here.
Love the pantry.. Best one I've seen and love your 1840 home. Have you ever tried Tomato Jam and Tomato preserves... My mother in-law used to make the preserves and hubby couldn't get enough of it..
Thanks for the kind words. No. I haven't tried either of those yet. I'm definitely put them on my list to try next year. Thanks for the suggestion.
Need to get rid of the cardboard. mice love cardboard . Awesome pantry.I see the jars of things and I see all the work that went into it.❤️
Believe it or not, we've never caught a mouse in the basement. I've caught them in the kitchen, but they don't seem to be interested in the basement. Living in an old farmhouse we're always on the lookout for mice. (and have traps set) Thanks for watching.
WoW so beautifu!!!
Thanks!
We live in Texas and there's a meat market in the next town over where we can purchase chicken carcasses. Makes beautiful chicken broth.
I should check some of our local markets. Thanks for the idea!
Oh, i forgot to add that you will have plenty of chicken stock if you raise your own birds. When the roosters begin to fight, they go into the pot.
We really might have to give meat birds a try.
Raisins are used in canning Apple conserves in the Ball book.
Then, they should be ok in applesauce. Thanks!
We love beef and barley soup here!
Is Barley able to be canned?
We rehydrate the barley in water overnight first (I use just 1 tablespoon of barley per liter of soup) because it will change in volume. Make sure the ratio solids to broth doesn't exceed 2/3. Also, like many other things in canning, barley is one that you have to decide what is acceptable in your kitchen ;-)
I might have to give that a try. Thanks!@@msjuliepoi
My family loves kielbasa, potatoes onions, lime beans and kraut goes in when all is done, that way my kraut warms up as it mingles with everything else without cooking, I don't want to kill the good stuff that's in my refrigerated kraut.
That does sound yummy. How long have you been able to keep kraut in the refrigerator? I may try some of that next year.
Exciting stuff! And the white walls really do make it look better too!
Thanks! I do like the white walls....it's still charming. :)
Azure standard has chicken backs. They are awesome for stock
I'll check into that. We do buy a lot of things from Azure Standard, but I never thought of chicken bones. Thanks!
I follow that 1870s Homestead recipe and put my cowboy candy in diced pieces. It's a lot more versatile. I can put it in just about anything.
I've watched quite a few of her videos, but not the cowboy candy one. I'll definitely check that out. Thanks!
Your rooms look great.
Will you come help me with mine. Lol
Thanks! I'm having enough trouble keeping my stuff organized. Haha.
I buy or raise whole chickens, roast, eat, then make bone broth with the scraps and bones. You can also buy chicken portions on sale with bones, pressure cook, then have chicken and broth for canning. I do both equally. You can even pressure cook frozen pieces or whole chickens.
We're going to have to explore a lot of options. Thanks for the ideas.
Yum raspberry applesauce!
It was delicious and used up some of our excess raspberries.
Thank you!
❤❤❤
Thanks!
You could do some apple pie filling to use up apples. A lot of applications for that outside of just pies.
I get chicken bones from the butcher.
Someone else suggested a butcher.....I'm going to look into it. I did make some apple pie filling and I think I'm still going to can some plain apples. We're also going to experiment with making cider.
Thanks for the ideas.
Lol, I just saw that. I guess I should Hagar waited until the end of the video to comment 😊
You can use your freeze dried veggies for meals in a jar
Would you need reconstitute then first? Or add extra liquids to the recipe?
Please do a video on saurkraught ..ibahve tried some recipes but haven't got one inliked yet..love your videos
I wouldn't be able to do that until next summer. I don't have any fall cabbage planted and probably won't need any sauerkraut util then. I'll definitely put it on a list of videos to do. Thanks for watching!
Will you share some of your recipes? Like the pickles you like best, pizza sauce & spaghetti sauce? Thanks!
Here is a picture of the pickle recipe. Let me know if you can't read it. photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNoqZkKyF3XVYwfpKz_gUl480HmV4p7jtQoYe1W8BS7EBbbtXfKIJnlLQyBKrlnVw?pli=1&key=R3E5UzM5Y29kRzkzVHNCM0NsemhrV1NMVlRBZl9n
The spaghetti sauce is the one in the "Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving" I make the plain tomato sauce and then add the Italian Spice Blend. Here's a link to the tomato sauce: www.ballmasonjars.com/blog?cid=homemade-tomato-sauce
Here is a link to the pizza sauce I make.www.backtoourroots.net/italian-herbed-tomato-sauce-canning-recipe/
In our last video I show how I make the plain tomato sauce and specifically how I save all of the tomato juice and cook it down separately. It provides a lot of tomato flavor. th-cam.com/video/uGJyZTWkR4s/w-d-xo.html
Enjoy!!!
@@waardenburgfamilyfarm4764 Yes! Thank you!
I was just gifted a crab, apple tree, and a fig tree, which will be planting soon
Wow, nice gift. I have a small fig tree in a pot, but I'm a novice when it comes to figs so it's not doing very well. I'll be bringing it in for the winter and hopefully next year it will do better.
I just found your channel today. Do you have a video of the Sloppy Joe mix?
I'm glad you found us. I haven't done a video of the Sloppy Joe Mix, but I will be doing one in the next few weeks. The recipe is a Ball recipe. Here is a link to the recipe: www.canningandcookingiastyle.com/recipe/saucy-sloppy-joe-starter/
Thank you for the link. I think I have every Ball canning book, but I was hoping someone had already tried one!
I want to do that with my onions
It works really well and I use the bags over and over.
Also pears I don’t see pear anything ..did ya plant a few pear trees
Our pear trees didn't do well this year. I LOVE pears and hopefully we'll get more pears next year. We will be planting more peach trees so I have more peaches to work with too.
Is there a video for your favorite pickles?
I was hoping to do a video this year, but since I didn't need to make any it will probably be next year. Here is a link to the photo of the recipe card. Let me know if you have any trouble reading it. photos.app.goo.gl/AHi2AduWcFXzGGqc6
The US doesn't have an approved recipe with raisins. but Bernadin might, because I know they had a mock cherry pie filling using grapes and dried cranberries
Thanks for the information. I'll check into Bernadin.
I've started making tinctures and that sounds interesting. Thanks for the idea
