    Modern day updates in your living space above ground--rrr- I agree your Larder is the TREASURE of the History this home has had. Thank you for "PRESERVING" your Larder. I imagine a wood cook stove and fireplaces in the living space, handmade furniture and clothing. Hides for shoe making, blacksmith aprons and gloves. Holiday gifts handmade and personal rarely a pleasantry as they were needs when using resources that were valued at the cost of what was needed most. I hope you enjoy your home, and your $10 Needlepoint is a perfect fit, in those days different types of educating were appreciated and respected. Your very Blessed in his image.

    Thank you for sharing part of your story with us. You asked what to put in jars for easy meals, I personally do a lot of ingredients or single variety canning. One of the things I'm learning is how to utilize what we have in storage, on hand, for a time when I don't have time to cook, illness, or emergency situation. I have put up 21 qts of ground beef/onion/mushroom in bone broth (from our butchered beef this year) for easy meals, open, heat, add corn starch or flour to make a gravy then pour over potatoes, rice or noodles. Then have a veg, salad, applesauce (also canned) on the side. Next on my list is taco meat for taco, burrito, enchiladas and soup. Everything is in the freezer taking up space so as I get time, I thaw it out then can it for the shelf. In the summer if it's too hot or I don't have time I put my fruit in the freezer then take it out thaw and make jelly/jam during the winter months. My freezers are always in rotation the same as my pantry/larder/root cellar. Each year I try to expand my knowledge. I'm learning the art of fermentation next year in my journey of self sufficiency. Wish me luck!

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've done plain ground beef, but I'll definitely ahve to try the taco meat. I also have a bunch of fruit in the freezer that I can turn into jam when I have time. So, you have a pantry, larder and root cellar....that's great! I haven't tried fermentation....I'll have to look into it. Good luck with your new venture.

      Luckily we've never had a problem with water in the root cellar. We did have to put in a ventilation system because the ven was covered up by an 1880 addition. We did it mostly for the radon, but it solved a lot of problems. I hope you are able to get your root cellar fixed and functioning. One of the best things we did in both the larder and root cellar was the white washing. We have a video about that, if you're interested. Enjoy your old farmhouse!!!

    If you want to get that root cellar colder, you need to put in a exhaust vent up high to get the hot air out. I understand why the exhaust is down low due to the radon. But root cellars should have 2 pipes. One down low near the floor for the intake and one near the ceiling for the exhaust of the warmer air.

    • @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764
      @waardenburgfamilyfarm4764  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ourvanlives4736 Hello, this is Don. Yes, your comments state the traditional approach for passive air circulation...after all warm air rises and cool replacement air is drawn to the lower vent. I allowed for pipe extensions to follow this logic, but my testing turned everything upside down. Power venting makes the air temp even top to bottom. In the winter my infrared thermometer shows the stones closer to the frost line (up high) to be cooler than the rocks down below. Our deep ground soil temp is close to 55 degrees F year around. The frost line can go as low as 30 inches here....so the top is actually 0.5 degrees colder than the floor level. Of course none of this is true in August. Thanks for your comments and I will continue to measure both air temps (top and bottom) and the stone temps.

We do not put apples in our root cellar at all we vent ours / have air circulation. Why risk losing your produce? You can create another area elsewhere...ie: an old concrete well house with some shelving/apple bins, plus other creative options....

      We mentioned that we have a powered ventilation system that replaces all of the air every day. It should prevent a build up of gas. This is the first year we've had enough apples to store so it will be a bit of an experiment before we have even more next year.
