got drafted into Australian army during american vietnam war. our platoon sergeant was a vietnam veteran, lived on the base with his family, his wife worked in the canteen. he never raised his voice, never abused threatened or struck a recruit. we were instructed by corporals whose behaviour was the same, humour not aggression , quite repetitive instruction , never abuse or ridicule. all of us completed basic training and passed out . the sergeant said you follow orders, you do your best because the life of the man next to you was in the balance if you failed, if you didnt care, if you were lazy. you poor pommy bastards. an Australian nasho would never have copped any of this shit.

the British army might not well known for high tech weaponry, but its high standard of regimental life continues in many Commonwealth nations.

2:30 The Corporal here is also on (Bad) Lads Army as the NCO in charge of the Quartermaster’s Stores. He also runs a firm which provides historical military uniforms, equipment, weapons etc. for films and TV shows.

The Middlesex Reg' hat badge,(4.01), should have a "Blood and Sand" backing to it!

Rifleman Moore - Such treatment certainly did happen, and there were some rather sadistic regular army NCOs that delighted in making lives a misery. I remember my father {a 25 year regular, and at the time a sergeant] telling me about the time, when we were in Catterick, that their RSM had a pot shot taken at him by a pissed off conscript with a Mk IV .303. The Nissan hut the guy was in must have all been behind him - because despite half the NCOs and officers and a bunch of Military Police and SIB trying to get to the bottom of who had squeezed the trigger, they never did. The best they could do was to put all the occupants of the hut on punishment.
My dad said that the RSM was pretty much disliked by everyone, including NCOs and officers. The bullet just missed the RSMs head and almost scared the crap out of him. I saw many many 'virgin soldiers' in Catterick, Singapore/Malaya, Hong Kong and [West] Germany; and just missed becoming one myself.

+André Maggi Yeah I know Bad Lads Army, it's a bit contrived to be honest, a shame, it had the makings to be a really good show.

If they're off to Malaya, shouldn't they be wearing Jungle Greens instead of Khaki Drill? Or is this for the layover in Aden ... ;--)

+Jack Flash I thought that too, however I have seen photos of troops embarking for Malaya in KDs, my Grandfather was sent off to Korea in '53 in KD shorts and shirt, made sense on the passage through the Suez Canal.

This reminds me of a passage in Tony Gould's book Imperial Warriors, where he describes his arrival in Malaya as a National Service Officer. He had flown via the Mid East and was in KD when he arrived in Singapore. The greeting officer thought the whole look was so comical that he just laughed and took pictures of the poor guy.
