    I walk in NYC through the neighborhood of South Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This part of Williamsburg is populated mainly by Orthodox Jews. Here you will see many Jewish establishments, delis, bakeries, stores, temples, places of worship, and schools.

      Hey Carole. I lived as a kid on Rutledge St between Marcy ave and Bdwy. Born there in 1954 and left 1967 due to then knocking down all the homes to big a bigger school. I live on Long Island now and my kids are now grown with their own families, but I had to drive them everywhere. Back in Bklyn. All the kids played right in the street. No regrets growing up there. Such great memories. Went to a catholic school called Transfiguration on Marcy and Hooper St.

      I visited this area last week "june 22" when we went to peter lugers. We walked around that block and I would like to come back and try some of that kosher food you guys are talking about. What are the things the men are carrying around? Look like a clear box with maybe long stem roses in them or something???

    That's what defines a "metropolis" for me: neighborhoods in which you think you're suddenly in another country because people have the opportunity to live their culture relatively unimpaired. I love it. I wish my city had that diversity.

    • @sisigpapi

      With that definition Tokyo isn't a metropolis though. Since it's 99% Japanese, even though it's the biggest city in the world

      I live in London,U.K and Stamford Hill is a bit similar to Williamsburg,although Williamsburg makes a tremendous difference in terms of Satmar community!Again,Crown Heights for me seems more engaging,just wish I could see more women on the street,yes with wigs,in general people say they are not interested but somewhere they are,is a different culture that is very comfortable for them,is their life ,is the mitzvahs,for us even though am reform jew must say is something new,I guess I must try one day how is it, in reality!

    8:20 That's the Williamsburg library! I use to go that as a kid. The library was built in 1903 and designed in a classical revival style. Its floorplan is meant to evoke an open book, with two wings radiating from the center atrium.

      @xomy4 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      my friend drove through your block yesterday. And people walk оn the street! Almost no one wears a mask! When all New York hospitals are crowded. The COVID-19 epidemic is terrible ... Why don’t you follow the quarantine rules ???

    • @1998tkhri
      @1998tkhri 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Lionel Muggerage Yeah, it's connected to Sukkos / Hoshana Raba. It contains a palm branch, myrtle branches, and willow branches. They probably are also holding a box containing a citron. Based on Leviticus 23:39-43:
      "But on the fifteenth day of the seventh month- in your gathering of the produce of the land, you shall celebrate YHWH's celebration, seven days; on the first day- a sabbatical, and on the eighth day, a sabbatical. And you shall take for yourselves on the first day- the fruit of the honorable tree- palms of dates, branch of a leafy tree, and willows of a brook; and you shall be happy- before YHWH your God seven days. And you shall celebrate is as a celebration for YHWH, seven day in a year; an eternal law for your generations; in the seventh month, celebrate it. In booths you shall reside, seven days; every citizen of Israel, shall reside in booths. So that- your generations will know, for in booths- I resided the children of Israel, in my taking them from the land of Egypt; I am YHWH your God."

    • @worldpapermoney
      @worldpapermoney 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@xomy4 The accepted opinion in this neighborhood is that there has been no new cases in the last two months and masks don't work anyways, so why suffocate for nothing? It is widely believed here that the majority of people who died from the virus where either old age hom residents or patients that were killed in the hospitals due to neglect and starvation.

    For people wondering what the sign says at 24:12, here's my very rough translation:
    "Happy and sweet year!
    We wish for all of our customers
    A good blessed and sweet year
    According to (?) fish that says ready to serve you continually
    With helpful service, tasty fresh fish, quality
    With the best best flavor for Shabbes* and YT**, for all of your
    celebrations and for every opportunity"
    * Sabbath, from Friday evenings at sunset until Saturday night at dark
    ** abbreviation for Yom Tov (often pronounced as Yontif), referring to the three major Jewish holidays, and Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year.

    The Hero 6 is looking good, 105. Brilliant Robin's egg-blue skies, crisp weather - its a wonderful day for walking. Here on the left coast, we had yesterday the CicLAvia/Downtown Disney festival, where an 8 mile stretch of street from the Disney Music Hall to parts near the Hollywood Bowl was closed to traffic, allowing cyclists and walkers free rein. A little humid, as monsoonal moisture was present from the south, but still good to be out and about, while testing my Garmin Virb Ultra 30. As always, thanks 105 for the clip.

      Its customary to wish each other a "Sweet year" this fish shop is using that message to market their fish. Sign is in Hebrew letters, but in Yiddish language (mostly) wishing their customers a sweet New Year, ready to serve our customers quality fish for the holidays. (roughly translated)

      Thank you for the translation. In India as well, that they baked sweet pastries to celebrate Deepavali as in to mark a sweet occasion. :)

      כן, הם מדברים וכותבים ביידיש כי הם חושבים שעברית היא ״לשון קודש״ ורק מדברים אותה בתפילה ובלימוד תורה. יידיש היא שפה קרובה לגרמנית, עם הרבה מילים מעברית, ארמית, רוסית (או שפות סלוויות אחרות) ואפילו שפות לטיניות.
