Weird and interesting things are my thing.... seaberries, saskatoon berries, honeyberries, currants, elderberries, gojis, hardy kiwis, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, apricots, plums, apples, pears, hazelnuts, chestnuts, walnuts, lingon berries, high bush cranberries, gooseberries, cherries, peaches and annual stuff like melons.... probably forgetting something, with more to come. For zone 4a in MN I like to push what I can grow here. So far so good. Got bananas and pineapple indoors with some citrus soon to come. Fun stuff!

Wow red currants are a luxury in Turkey! I think it’s because of the climate. It only grows in the Northern parts.

In Brazil red currant juice is extremely popular but I've never seen the fruit before. Every kid in Brazil has had red currant juice at least once.
    Very interesting video.

I had my first decent red currant harvest this year. Not quite enough for jelly, but use any cranberry muffin recipe (with orange and cinnamon) and sub in the currants...yummy! I also have gooseberries, honeyberries, jostaberries, red and gold raspberries, elderberries, and blueberries. The currants have ramped up production the fastest-- I highly recommend them!

Most ribes actually prefer partial shade, especially currants. They propagate very easy from cuttings. Easy to grow plants, cold hardy. Reds are my favorite. They make great jam.

Red currants and raspberries are a good combo for pies. Do the mixture on the stovetop add sugar and tapioca to thicken, it is yummmmmmy. Warm and ice cream is great. 🇨🇦

We have two gooseberries (2 more on the way) and 3 josta berries in the ground. They're pretty easy to grow. No currants but I think I may put red currants in as windbreaks and leave them for the birds.

definitely pick them as a cluster if you pick them one by one you damage them and they get bad faster. my grandparents had some when i was young they ate it raw our in yogurt with some sugar or honey.

  • @danrmaz
    @danrmaz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Mate, in Europe we do eat them raw. Rarely processed.
But the one by the tree is probably crowded out, the tree is taking water and nutrition.

There must be a reason that currant is named vinbär, (ie wine berries) in Swedish. My mother used to make the most lovely wine from black currant.

I have one side of my house that's in partial shade and it grows the best currants. I have 32 plants alternating between black and red and each one produces like crazy. I have some in full sun and thy seem to get overheated and always look damaged. So next year I'm going to plant another group along the fence to balance it all out. I have a big juice grinder that separates the junk from juice and i make popsicles out of them. Its the greatest popsicle ever.

The best jam, is raspberry blood orange marmalade. Gotta make the marmalade first using the old fashioned method "no jam sugar or special setters" only boil the pectin out of the pith. Then you add the raspberries and cook until 220f. This jam is my best seller.

Good video. I just bought a black currant berry bush (H: 1m) at home depot, planted and surrounded the roots with good compost in a sunny place in the yard. A few days of a mixture of rain/sun and some of the leaves are starting to yellow and curl. Any suggestions on why and how to combat this? Thanks. Greetings from WA.

Late to the party on this one, but assuming you've been properly watering them, your soil could be too nitrogenous.

It could be experiencing transplant shock. Sometimes too cold or too wet or too hot can stress them out. If the plant is young or its too sunny or hot, it can cause that. Some use B1 vit solution to help prevent transplant shock. Also its best to transplant in spring when plants are sleeping/dormant.

Great video buddy. Nice to see what's happening elsewhere in the world. Your weather and climate sound a real treat. Shame about the illegality of currants. I'm live in Nottinghamshire. The midlands UK. And currant jam in a absolute staple. Gooseberry on the other hand is sort of going out of fashion here unfortunately. Out local dish is actually a Gooseberry Pork Pie 🤣 not that I've ever seen one for sale.

My name is Jason WHitney, If you can take a look at it and give me some advice if you have any ideas that'd be awesome. Speaking of i had 105 degree weather for 3 days straight.
