“Hinnomaki” is from Finland. I planted one of them and a couple other varieties per your recommendations in the past. Can’t wait to try some fruits!

I am planting a Ribes speciosum, a california fuchsia gooseberry. it looks crazy but I think you can cross breed it with a regular gooseberry tree so I'm gonna plant them next to each other. we'll see what happens!
We were stationed in England and recently we discovered one vine on our nm property. I’m so excited.
Our 3 year old gooseberries are just starting to get a large amount of fruiting wood. Really excited for next year. We've mostly been getting a handful of black velvet gooseberries, but I expect we'll have quite a bunch on our others next year (Glenndale and Jahn's Prairie). I'll probably add a few more bushes at some point. I'm looking forward to trying out the Poorman variety.
Hey Ross great information on Hinnomaki red gooseberries. I have 4 plants in the Pittsburgh area (zone 6b) and they do wonderfully in an area with only half day sun. Thanks for spreading the word!
Based on my experience I highly recommend growing Gooseberries to anyone thinking about it. The soil in my yard is pretty poor and not a lot grows well. What does grow the wildlife/deer usually get before I do. The one exception is my Pixwell Gooseberries. They have thrived and I haven't had any issue with anything eating them on me. They also are easy to propagate new plants off of if you want to add additional bushes. The only downsides are the thorns and the fact that the fruit has a flavor similar to sour grapes so not everyone's favorite to eat raw. However, great for baking with other fruit and/or sugar to sweeten.
I agree, I have pixwell, and they are crazy, almost no care.

Ross, I'm just posting this FYI, not as criticism. Currants and Goose berries are legal in NJ, they are not "legal" in Pa... BUT, the law is NOT ENFORCED. Currants and gooseberries cannot be grown legally in North Carolina. Both serve as alternate hosts for diseases that affect important economic crops in our state. For further clarification, contact the N.C. Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, Plant Protection Division

I'm looking forward to your upcoming Jostaberry video. I haven't tried them yet and it looks like I might only get 1-2 this year. I'm not super big into eating black currants fresh, but I'm hopeful that the cross will be much tastier.
Im in uk, gooseberries are normal here, but ive just bought a ted goiseberry plant and they sre girgeous, its only small plant but lisds of berries on it and they taste amazing, to me they taste like gorgeous grapes

I put a green variety in my food forest about a year ago. I forgot the name. I got it because a friend always told me about his grandmas gooseberry pies so I’m going to have to find out for myself lol

Indian gooseberry produce green fruits not red or pink... It is the only fruit i known which can eaten boiled but still vitamin C will not destroyed😊
I have the new Jeanne Gooseberry in my food Forest in the Bronx New York .. I hope it’s crisp like yours and not grainy/mushy
I`m trying Cape Gooseberry this year, a native of Peru and very productive and simple to grow, that tastes like a cross between a tomato and tropical fruit. I`ve never tried it or these. I ordered seeds for this a few years ago and they never arrived. I need to try again I guess.

I wish I could grow goose berries here In zone 9b sadly I can't find a variety that can😔
It can be done, it's all about location, grow it under a tree that gets a trickle of light through it or grow it somewhere where it gets just a few hours morning sun, it doesn't need much direct sunlight, so just give it the sun when it's at it's less intense in hotter climates, the leaves dont like intense direct sunlight, they wilt.

I’ll concur, plant and just water when extremely hot. Put mulch down.
Ross - thanks for this video. where do you buy native gooseberries?
I’ve had my gooseberries in the ground for the past 4 years they haven’t fruited yet, any ideas on how long it takes to start fruiting or ho to get it to fruit?
They will typically fruit from Year 2 onwards and varieties like Hinnomaki will produce fairly impressive crops from Y2. Would suggest pruning and fertilizing your plant with a rich compost to see if that helps. The other consideration could be that it's fruiting (weakly perhaps?) but the birds are getting to the crop before you do - a net can help if so.
I had to wait 3 years, but darn the plants crazy, hundreds on each plant, just make sure they get water when it’s extremely dry, I have pixwell.

They taste gross...I eat when it's green, it's crunchy and sour. I wait til they turn purple and taste like mush...like applesauce. Are they supposed to taste like this?
No. They should be crisp and sweet. You need a better variety. Try Hinnomaki Red. Could also be a watering issue. I assume you're mulching?
any guess as to how many quarts the hinnonmaki bush yields?
4-8? It's hard to say. They eventually get bigger and spread too.
Do you know what zones they grow in?
Gooseberries enjoy colder climates to my knowledge and will grow in as cold as Canadian Hardiness zone 3, so about USDA 2. I'm in Canadian hardiness zone 5b and about everyone has them in their yards because they're so easy to grow.
@@alexandrej89 I just received some young plants here in zone 4. They look too young (about 10 -12 inches) to survive the winter so I put them in pots.
Not sure how/when to put them in the ground.

@@larawines4875 10-12 inches is fine. They are easy to propagate and most people just stick pencil size cuttings in the ground in spring or fall. If theses are potted plants (not bare root), you can transplant any time now. If they were bare root, you just need to wait until they go dormant in fall and plant them.
I’ve got them here (on Ross’s recommendation I went and got them 😂 ) I am zone 9a I think I read up to zone 8 (I’m on the border between 8b and 9a coastal MS)
