This movie was one of my dad's favorites. When we saw it in October, 1965, he had some idea what it was about, but no detailed info on the plot or scenes. I still remember hearing him laugh as hard as anyone in the theater. And the little Edward's touches, the hero with the twinkling eyes and teeth, didn't go unnoticed. A shame the movie didn't do better than it did at the box office or with critics.
My dad loved Jack Lemmon he was honestly just amazing and this was one of his favorites. I remember watching this when I was 5 and crying. So epicly brilliant
Love the Tasmanian Devil sound effect accompanying the torpedo! I was kind of half expecting the torpedo to start doing Taz's usual babbling and sputtering!
One of the best comic movies ever...Professor Fate's iconic laughter😂...sen it countless times n still love it as much as when u saw it first as a kid in 80s
The FATE torpedo thingy (along with the Hannibal 8) is on permanent display at the Petersen Automotive Museum, on Wilshire Blvd, downtown L.A. Very cool to see in person!
Treg Brown was the man who did all the sound effects work at Termite Terrace and was the man who hired Mel Blanc. He won an Academy award for his work in this film. He really added to the production and truly deserve his Oscar he received.
This entire scene is like something from a Spy versus Spy cartoon. A lot of imagination coupled with the odd-ball gadgets that were passed off as "inventions" around the late 1800s/early 1900s. I'd say that Blake Edwards watched silent film footage of weird flying machines and other goofy inventions circa the early 1900s.
Professor Fate is clearly the founder of Acme Corporation.... While Fate acts "Wile E".... The Great Leslie is his hated Road Runner... his inventions hilariously backfire on him!
2:39 A huge fireball and a ta-da! That's how I want to be remembered. BTW, what exactly is the the Great Leslie's stunt? He's drove a speed boat around a calm lake for a few minutes. Ta-da!
So funny...I'll have to watch the whole thing again... notice at 2:21 the line in the water in front of the torpedo, pulling the damn thing forward lol...
Maybe the most funny scene of the movie, and the most brilliant attempt to sabotage Leslie. Fun fact: they don't release the torpedo from its wagon. That's the only reason why the torpedo can also drive on land and destroy their car. Watching the torpedo following them through the woods and then, when it's out of sight, the detonation, is priceless.
I swear these bits remind me of the spy versus spy stories out of mad magazine especially the one wearing all white the villain wearing all black and half the time the weapons not working on the other one
It killed me when the torpedo just went on land chasing fate and max🤣😂🤣😂
This has to be one of the best movie scenes in the history of the world. No joke.
I saw this movie twice and I'm still surprised to hear the Tasmanian Devil whirling sound coming from that torpedo.
Not to mention Elmer's gunshots
An acoustic torpedo with a grammophone "ear"!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
[wipes tears]
Absolutely brilliant and hilarious!!!

comedic timing in this movie is everything
One of those Films...Where everyone on the Set had Fun...
1973 ..The Sting..as well..
To hear that torpedo, I would be looking for the Tasmanian Devil!
Anyone who has played Mario on Nintendo would recognize
the Torpedo being Bulletman's grandfather.
My dad loved Jack Lemmon he was honestly just amazing and this was one of his favorites. I remember watching this when I was 5 and crying. So epicly brilliant
This is like a live action version of Looney Tunes
.. combined with Laurel & Hardy type gags.
Whacky Races cartoons were based on this
Love the Tasmanian Devil sound effect accompanying the torpedo! I was kind of half expecting the torpedo to start doing Taz's usual babbling and sputtering!
@Zak Wolf
Ha ha!
That deranged smile on the missile makes it even funnier!
@@PTSmash Yep, for me it's the combination of that deranged face and the Tasmanian Devil spinning sound effect.
Fun fact: That sound effect originally came from the sound an inertia starter made on an old plane engine 👍🏻👍🏻
Peter Falk and Jack Lemmon has to be one of the greatest comedy pairings in cinema
Tony Curtis was the perfect adversary to Fate! The quintessential All American pretty boy!
One of the best comic movies ever...Professor Fate's iconic laughter😂...sen it countless times n still love it as much as when u saw it first as a kid in 80s
They don't make movies like this anymore. It's a shame, because these were great.
Professor Fate could sell this torpedo to navy. He would be rich.
He must have sold it to the Germans! They used it against Das Limpet ("The Incredible Mr. Limpet" with Don Knotts) ! Thrummm!! 😂😂😂😂
The FATE torpedo thingy (along with the Hannibal 8) is on permanent display at the Petersen Automotive Museum, on Wilshire Blvd, downtown L.A. Very cool to see in person!
I think so, too. Saw them in person some years ago.
Those sound effects were beautiful!
@ZantiMisfit
Basically just one big Looney Tunes Cartoon. Almost every sound effect used are classic Warner Bros sounds.
Treg Brown was the man who did all the sound effects work at Termite Terrace and was the man who hired Mel Blanc. He won an Academy award for his work in this film. He really added to the production and truly deserve his Oscar he received.
Didn't he just?
The Pie Fight Is The Best Scene...

I like the brawl at borrocho better!
"Ooo, lillies his girl"
I love how Fate takes the time to decorate his weapons and other inventions with his name and also a face.

If you note at the beginning of the movie, it is dedicated to Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy.
He was definitely into steam punk for sure! Probably HG Wells or something along those lines😅😅😅
I remember the first run as a kid in our local theater. Blake Edwards had a knack for these
Professor Fate is clearly the founder of Acme Corporation.... While Fate acts "Wile E".... The Great Leslie is his hated Road Runner... his inventions hilariously backfire on him!
OMG professor fate created the first misile drone with IA in the history
2:39 A huge fireball and a ta-da! That's how I want to be remembered.
BTW, what exactly is the the Great Leslie's stunt? He's drove a speed boat around a calm lake for a few minutes. Ta-da!
He was attempting to break the record for fastest speed on water.
That thing will hear you comin from a mile away!
So funny...I'll have to watch the whole thing again... notice at 2:21 the line in the water in front of the torpedo, pulling the damn thing forward lol...
The sound of the torpedo was taken from a inertia starter like on old aircraft engines LOL
I think it was also like on old Indy cars
It’s like watching the coyote vs the roadrunner…lol
Press the button,Max!
One of the funniest movies of all time

best part of the moive
1:19 There are saboteurs with the noise-seeking torpedo.
There you can see the black stones lined up.
This scene was clearly inspired by the classic looney tunes shorts.
I swear these bits remind me of the spy versus spy stories out of mad magazine especially the one wearing all white the villain wearing all black and half the time the weapons not working on the other one
Except the guy dressed in black always fails in his attempts to kill the man in white
"Leslie escaped with a chicken?"
Mmm mmm mmm! Love me some Kentucky Friar!
My favorite.
I loved how they put all of the sound effects from Looney Tunes in this.
Roadrunner vs Coyote but with people.
I'm crying too.
loved how they used loony toons sound efx. lol.
Sure, the special effects are cheesy and cornball, but at the same time this scene is funny as hell.
I want to put the torpedo /track sled graphic on a motorcycle tank
Filmed at Big Bear Lake California
It was actually Lake Arrowhead, which is close to Big Bear Lake.
Looks like Professor Fate could have used a tune up.
Mutley! Do something!
Good
crap he's fuck up !jajajaja
DAS NENNT MAN PECH
sighted speedboat, sank car...
Funny movie. Miss Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk
Very disrespectful to refer to him as "Miss Jack Lemmon."
Hahahahahahhaha
Jack Lemmon's MAGNUM OPUS!
Push the button Max😂
