For me Professor Fate was allways the true hero of that Film, because Fate is everything you can love on a villian, while Great Leslie is all what you can hate on a hero. I think everybody who saw the movie, could understand why Fate hated Leslie and would agree with his statement at the end of the movie.
Well maybe but don't forget he is scheming clever when it comes to cheating. Plus that kind of cliche villain and sort of incompetent for whatever's too funny with his henchman Max
That was my grandfather as the farmer in that scene. He was a property master for Warner Bros till he retired in 1971. Had some great stories about that movie and worked with some of the all time greats. James Dean, John Wayne, Natalie Wood, Humphrey Bogart etc.
@@carlesamigo4731 Not that scene itself. Told me that part was filmed in Lexington Kentucky. There is another scene where they try to break the land speed record in that rocket type ship on the train tracks and end up getting airborne and crashing into the barn again. He said when they fired up the rocket that the extras watching weren’t aware of how loud it was gonna be and when you see them jump and run off, that was legit! Scared the crap out of em.
@@carlesamigo4731 In the pie throwing scene he said that Keenan Wynn ( the great leslie’s partner) was a jerk to a lot of the extras so they ganged up on him with the pies between takes.
@@carlesamigo4731 My grandfather told me it was a very fun shoot with all the travel to the different places. He said aside from Keenan Wynn being a jerk, the whole cast was very nice to work with. The Hannibal 8 car is on display at the Petersen Automotive museum in Los Angeles if you live in the area. Was pretty cool to see that in person.
Every time PROFESSOR FATE (drum roll) comes on they play that theme. When I was a kid we all called it the Dismal Theme. When that music came on, you know he was going to get it.....
In Junior High, my Photography Instructor gave me the nickname "Professor Fate." For years he would refer to me as "the Professor." I took it as a compliment!
The only movie and a race where the villain is the winner, and a memorable one at that. I never cared much for the romance, but when it comes to the adventure and action, Professor fate will always be the best one in the movie along with the prince!
Remember how Jack was always saying, Max you idiot? He did that same thing in Grumpy old men, only it wasn't Peter Falk he said it to, it Walter Matthau, whose name was also Max. It was the last time Jack did his Professor Fate voice, and it put a tear in my eye.
Max is an unsung Hero in this. Talk about an all around Assistant. He could fly a plane. Had no fear of jumping on a pedal driven balloon, or a rocket powered rail car. Need him to accompany you on a dangerous road trip all the way around the world , all while being totally supportive of your dastardly deeds and nefarious schemes? Doesn’t matter, he’s down for it all without nary a complaint. Ya just can’t get help like that nowadays.
The Great Race airs Wed morning (12:35am CT, Oct. 12, 2022) on Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Prior to it at 7pm (CT), "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" (1965), then at 9:30pm (CT) is the funniest film I've ever seen: "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963). Followed by The Great Race at 12:30am. At 3:30am (CT) is "The Fortune Cookie" (1966) starring Jack Lemmon and his great friend Walter Matthau.
+marlin kojak I agree, I just told my daughter that,, Todays films are nothing but explosions and all out war, if its not that its all about sex. I guess because Hollywood ran out of ideas and great actors and actress. personally theres no actor/actress that can do any part of this film or any like it.
@ Dallas K---I think we could both be right. I can check with the Glenn Curtis Museum in Hammondsport NY [about 50 miles from me] and ask if the 1912 Model D was nicknamed "June Bug" or not. This clip from the movie looks just like the Finger Lakes where Curtiss was located. This is a great movie. Thanks for your reply.
This is a gem! And I'd wager a guess that the only couple of people who could possibly have voted thumbs-down on this priceless classic clip are people who are too afraid/ashamed to admit that they've ATTEMPTED this stunt after having seen it...(and their result was the same: just like the idiots who had posted a TH-cam clip of themselves years ago attempting a piledriver off their roof!) My favorite line in the whole movie is "Push the button, Max!" (Especially when it is followed by "M-M-M-A-A-A-X-X")
Yeah, it's a good classic comedy.

Jack Lemmon was so great in this. And Peter Falk was a perfect sidekick.

In that case, I really got to re-watch this movie! I don't understand why Leslie's everything we agree to hate on a hero.
Well it was their second pairing since Some Like It Hot and Lemmon stole that one as well.
Totally agree. Professor Fate is the real hero.

The Professor Fate character was obviously modeled after Glenn Curtiss and 'Max' is flying a Curtis "headless pusher" Model E (I believe).

No arguments there. 😁
What a great movie. In stitches all the way through it!!!!! Professor Fate hilarious!!!
