I remember seeing this great film at a drive-in with my parents and brothers in 1961. What a tremendous cast and what a dramatic conclusion to the film!
Even then as a little kid, I thought Gia Scala was incredibly beautiful. Sadly, Ms. Scala died much too young.
The less said about the so-called sequel, the better.

My father was only 18 when he took his girlfriend/future wife/my mother to see this fresh in the cinemas. They both raised me to love the sweeping epic films of their youth, and having grown up on films of the 70's-90's, I can say that I am honored to have watched THE GUNS OF NAVARONE and its kind. I consider TGON to be among the most perfect action/WW2 dramas of the 60's.

One of this “boomer’s” favorite all-time WW2 movies. No crazy, gonzo, muscle-bound “Seal Team-6” Arian Superman types. Just a group of tough men who looked and sounded like the ones we grew up around...our fathers...who had fears, vulnerabilities, a hatred of war but a dedication to duty.

You hit it, as in "the nail on the head", Ratnakar, sir! Why is J. Lee Thompson always ignored by the film historians? I have no idea, as he is technically a great actors' director, and nobody has ever shot action like this man has! With Carl Foreman's terrific script, Thompson was called in to replace another director (perhaps Anthony Mann, another great director) and with no time to prepare, Tompson did the most bang-up job in film history!

Filmed in the AEGEAN SEA AAND ON THE ISLAND OF RHODES IN GREECE.....
I remember the almost sailing reports about making the film reading them on the newspapers or hearing about the making on the radio
It had a psychological effect on the nation for acknowledging the important part that Greece played in the WW2 and the resistance against Italians Germans and Bulgarians as occupying forces for 4 years leaving a devastated country with the highest percentile loss of human lives in Europe

I’m English and live in south east Bulgaria. I’m only just discovering the truth about the occupation of Greece, the torture and summary executions of more than 40,000 Greeks in WW2. Truly shocking.
We visited NIs in Serbia. Fifteen thousand civilians were shot by the Germans in reprisals for partisan attacks. Crimes like that took place in every town and city across the country.
      Truly horrifying!

I remember this film ..it was recorded on video cassette by my cousin ,I was barely 8 yrs old and always watched it whenever I went to their home in school holidays..couldn't understand but loved to see the ships and boats in splendid blue ocean...I still cherish the memories..those late 80' s and early 90' s were mesmerizing.

The first time I watched this was with my dad and I had no clue what it was about. I was that small. The only thing I remember so well was the sound (sirens?) of the British fleet towards the end. But when I watched it again on my own this entire movie blew me away. For me this is one of the best out there.

The thing that impresses me about James Darren is he sings in Greek in one of the scenes in the movie, and as a Greek myself I have to say he pronounces the Greek words very well. Now in this scene with Gregory Peck(He talks in Greek to German officer ) you can tell by the way he speaks Greek that he is not Greek .The Greek words were not pronounced right.James Darren it seems took his role more seriously by singing a Greek song perfectly ,making sure to pronounce the words correctly .

The country has been betrayed from within by powerful interests who've used the offices and machinery of government for their own ends and to the detriment of everyone else. The damage done internally by these people (the massive debt-burden and the concomitant inflation, the export of jobs and the flooding of the country with cheap labour migrants, the run-down of national infrastructure, the massive spending on military hardware, the foreign wars that rarely go right,..: all this stuff wasn't the work of foreign enemies, of their armies and agents, but has resulted from a rigged, corrupt political/legal system and the corporate and high-financial interests that control it.

As a teenager, I read Alistair Mc Lean's book (its French translation in post-French rule Vietnam). Mc Lean was a master storyteller (Guns of Navarone, Where Eagles Dare among others). The book was riveting, and quite moving. So when I belatedly watched this movie, the on-screen adaptation of the book, frankly, I first felt a bit like a letdown. Since then I have enjoyed watching it many more times on DVD. G Peck, A Quinn, D Niven's acting , its breathtaking cinematography, and its beautiful musical score. One of the greatest war movie, in my opinion, which they do not make anymore. Nevertheless, my memories from the books are unforgettable. Thank you Mr Mc Lean! RIP

The scene is ABSOLUTELY INSANE. It would NEVER HAPPEN in real war. This is why:
    1. The captain would NEVER leave his ship.
    2. Before the boarding group would go to the fishing boat, all the men on the boat would be ordered to stand with hands up and turned back
    3. The guns of the patrol boat would be aiming at the men on the boat ready to fire in 1 second

People get lazy and let their guards down. That Patrol boat had probably searched dozens of fishing boats and found nothing but fish. The Commandos had prepared their ambush, taking out the deck gunner and then throwing explosives down the vents.
