I'm not holding anything back in this video, man... When you combine carb cycling and intermittent fasting you'll burn fat like crazy, build lean muscle and at the same time... ramp-up your total testosterone levels. ... and in this video you'll get a complete carb cycling and intermittent fasting plan- laid out plain as day. Check it out and enjoy!
Thank you for all that you have taught me. I've learned how to do intermittent fasting on TH-cam and carb cycling from you. This is the best explanation about carb cycling that I have seen. I started out doing the traditional 16/8 fasting then went to 18/6. With the calories I was consuming, the 18/6 was just too short of a period so I went back to the 16/8. Now that I'm cutting, I've reduced my calories and increased my walking before eating, I've gone back to the 18/6. I've lost 7 lbs. in the last 3 weeks and still can get 2 reps of 225 at 163 lbs. at age 65. Getting ready for the beach this month. I do get some looks. Thank you again.
That is awesome to hear, Johnny! Really pumped about that for you. Many more videos on the way. If there are any topics you want me to cover just let me know!
Pointing out everybody is different is a straightaway indicator of credibility. As a relatively old hard gainer, I've gotten great results by not over-thinking it, generally going into fasting mode prior to working out (HIIT and/or strength), with some BCAA and co-factors just before the workout so as not to over-stress the muscles; then re-feed afterwards as long as I have that sort of hunger. Then transition back to lower carb and fasting. Even the number of days can be variable, depending on other activity, and I have a sense that is *good.* Something like a musky fishing outing, having to shovel 10 inches of snow, or a strenuous job can be the equivalent of a workout. I've made adjustments based on what has *worked* best. Basically following my body's cues, with a curveball or longer rest period thrown in every now and again.
Gary , you had me at " Super Benefits " lol. You are the man. Great content coming from many years of trial and error. We appreciate it man. Haven't seen a new video in a little while. Make sure you keep showing us what's good. God bless !
Just found your channel I’ve tried IF and keto together it works but hard to sustain over time seems like carb cycling is the way to go my starting weight currently is 362 so I’ll check back to in a few weeks to let you know if this worked for me
Hi Gary. I wanted to throw an idea for a topic maybe for one of your upcoming fantastic videos. As we grow older ,injuries seem to be inevitable at one point or the other. So the idea is how to deal with the mental aspect of being injured after you have been on a roll and feeling great , how to set your mind to understand it will take time and recovery will take longer but we can get back to it and tips on how to star back after being so deconditioned that it feels like we never stteped foot at the gym before ..maybe letting us know muscle memory will be there and how to get back on the horse .Sorry I elaborated quite a bit on the idea but coming from your knowledge and experience there will be a lot of us who will listen and totally be grateful for it. I am coming back myself from an injury and I hate the feeling of getting out of shape and the pants starting to get tighter. Hope I make sense and keep up the great job Gary.
Thank you Gary for this great plan. I am 44 years old and get a very positive change only after the first week... just trying to see my abs for once in my life and keep my muscles , and i wonder what will happen if i stick to it for 6 or 8 weeks... Thanks for your effort, love your plan and sure it will finally get me to where i want.
Hi Gary. Excellent video. When it comes to gaining muscle should I use the same carb cicleying formula but just to make sure I am on a caloric surplus or carbs should be increase ?? Thank you for the great information.
Fantastic vids, Gary. As a 68 year old long time weight trainer my prob has always been a fast metabolism and difficulty with keeping weight on. Just started your tricon regimen and I love it. With the way I work out, I would also love to pack on 15 pounds, but can I do this with intermittent fasting? And also what caloric and carb intake do you recommend? Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I am an older guy (59) and really don't need to lose weight. My whole goal is to build muscle and eliminate lower ab fat. I actually may want to gain some weight, but I want it to be good weight. How does this work for someone like me?
Gary, I want to workout around 5AM. I am a little concerned with not eating until 11AM, what do you suggest I use as an IF window to get the best results. I am just starting the fit 50 plan, but have tried IF fasting before without training so it was easier. I appreciate your guidance.
Gary do you have this plan written down anywhere so it can be referenced during the specific days with the type of meals you recommend on the specific days? I want to try this.
My thoughts on the initial cycle. I don’t see how you can benefit much from going one day zero carb, next day moderate carb, next day refeed, then repeat. You’re never getting into ketosis and actually burning very much fat. I think if you’re going to carb cycle, you need to do like 1 carb day, or maybe 2 carbs days back to back. Then the rest of the week go low to zero carbs and intermittent fasting and try to get into ketosis for like half the week maybe.
3-4 sessions per week David. I tend to have my moderate and high carb days on training days. I'll have a low carb day on training days too but not during a body part I'm wanting to grow. For example. If I want to grow my legs, I'd have a high or moderate carb day on leg day.
Ok. Very beneficial information however I thought carb cycling was about taking in the amount of carbs you would need pertaining to the type of activity you would be doing that day? Example: heavy training with legs or back vs a rest day. How are you powering thru other workouts for the wk if you are only having 1 heavy carb day? #2. I'm finding it very hard to get in all my carbs on the heavy carb day within my eating window. Can you reccomend a carb supplement for me? Thanks!
My question is about structuring workouts around this schedule. My plan based on this would be to make sure my heaviest workouts happen on the MC and refeed days. My current workout is 4 days a week. My heaviest days are leg day, back day and chest day. Shoulder/trap day is kind of a light day. So my logic says to eat MC or refeed on those lifting days. Does that make sense to you? (Video criticism: I’m a teacher so I look at presentations with an eye for how to make this even better- after watching your video and reading your description, you are a good writer but with the way your brain works it’s clear you get lost in your thoughts as you speak. That makes it hard for listeners to follow. I’d recommend relying on your writing ability and script your videos... and probably read your script via a screen in front of the camera or something. Also, it’s really hard to see your whiteboard, even when you change colors. You might look into some kind of video editing software and edit power point slides into your vids or something. I think that can be done iMovie. Hope that helps and thanks again for the info!)
14 hours is not a fasting window. Let’s say you eat dinner at 8pm, you aren’t even in a fasted state until like 3-4 hours later. You technically you’re only in a fasted state for 10-11 hours... and only up and active for about 3 or 4 hours and if you’re not exercising intensely before breaking the fast, there’s really not going to be many benefits from the fast.
Great video Gary. I'm a newbie with the Ripped at 40 program. My question is I work long hours. I would be following this ZC plan from Mon - Sun. I would be going with 5 meals a day. If I can only workout at 9pm taking 1 hour to 1.5 hrs. Is it okay for me to eat at 11pm at night for my 5th meal? Or should I just sub a shake instead? Any recommendations for a shake I'd appreciate :-)
Hey Kent, so pumped to hear you're starting the Ripped After 40 program! You can eat at 11pm for sure. A shake would work fine too with some whey isolate protein powder. Something that only has about 1-2 carbs in it.
Can you do a video, or help me figure out how to do this while working the night shift. I work in Nursing, and have not been eating after 8p and drinking a gallon of water throughout the night. I have gotten off track lately. I'm 46 and a woman. I've gained at least 30 pounds, but I think it might be more hormonal. Please help. Thanks
Hello, Gary! How do you calculate what ur caloric intake should be when carb cycling. I know how much protien to eat, but I get confused with the fats and carbs. I know one is higher than the other depending on if it's a zero, moderate, or high, but what formula do u use or percentage? Hope I dont sound dumb, but I with all the info out there I end up getting confused on how to calculate it ?
Great video as always I was wondering for me I really only eat 1 or 2 time's a day only when I am hungry I only eat because I need too not because I want too also not really easy at home with my wife and kid to eat something different so hard to prep I am about to be 39. I would like to lose around 12lbs mostly in the belly what do you think would best way to do that? Thanks for any help
Great Steven, are you currently eating in a caloric deficit? Are you training as well? This type of plan will still work for you with the carb cycling for sure.
I like/appreciate the information. I think it's good and very helpful! On the critical side and hopefully not being too much of an ass, I thought you were smacking your lips, but I think its the pen clicking. For me, that's irritating. Other than that, I think this is a great video, thats going to help me a lot- Thx! Also, very glad to hear the, "God bless" at the end. Jesus is King!
Hey man so you can eat from 8pm to 4am. Or 6pm to 4am. When do you typically train? You can adjust the fasting windows based on your training days or rest days.
Look man I love your channel but that info that you just shared could have been better prepared. I couldn't even see what you had written. I would like to follow your plan to the letter because of your body structure, in other words, you are jacked lol. Also what about meat protein on those four days? What! When! Why! Oh, boy, do I need help!!
You need to keep this type of thing concise. Too much rambling off topic and anecdotal stuff. If you're going to make an instructional or information video then just impart the information, there's too much of ' lets say 'this or ' if you're a guy who' story telling. It would have been so much easier to detail what to eat and not to eat on given days.
I'm not holding anything back in this video, man...

Best information I've found on IF and carb cycling. Thanks sir!

Right on, David! You're going to love it man. LOL to the 2 meals of donuts
What's your opinion on having high carbs on heavy lifting days and low to medium carbs on off/rest or cardio days?
I think that's a good way to go, Carlos
