      @@zephyrstrife4668 sort of. He's more comparable to Cato Sicarius. Essentially, he's low-key a bit annoying, people wish they'd focus on other vampires even if they don't hate him, he's a self egrandizing idiot who's a tactical genius because the writers say he is, not because he wins or is competent, and he low-key killed the setting, and probably killed a named character you liked more than him because people kept trusting fucking mannfred.

    Just some small details to add: Heinrich Kemmler is actually probably one of the oldest Warhammer characters, appearing in one of the first Boxed Scenarios for Warhammer (Terror of the Lichemaster -1986) boxed set and then reappearing in 'Vengeance of the Lichemaster' scenario Citadel Journal Spring '86. He disappeared for many years before reappearing in the 4th edition warhammer armies Undead. So less unrestrained canon creation than a canon 'necro'. Literally. The first time I saw Nagash and read his background I thought that he was a copypasta of another early Warhammer Novel character Drachenfels the great Enchanter, written by Jack Yeovil (Kim Newman) in 1989. He shared with Nagash the fact that they were both immortal terrible necromancers and were both humbled by Sigmar in battle. I think somewhere along the line there may have been copyright issues, and Drachenfels stopped being the warhammer worlds great baddy, until he reappeared as 'the nameless one' in End Times as a slightly less terrible threat, until a possessed Luthor Huss burns the enchanter out with the POWER OF FAITH!. Or something. The Felix and Gotrek short story is interesting in that GW messed up the canon with this one. Gotrek and Felix featured in short stories in the early Warhammer novel anthology, Ignorant armies (1989) way before the collected Trollslayer novel came out. However in 1994 its was an interesting extra aside into their adventures. Then Bill King continued to write stories for the pair, but the short story made no sense canonically with regards to 6th edition (long story). Eventually some of the weird non canonical excepts would be collected in Black Library Felix and Gotrek: the lost tales.

      "Harry the Hammer", or whatever his canon name is is older. He was on the cover of the first edition of Warhammer, and was still canon up until the End Times, where he was a brutal-yet-calculated Chaos Warrior who worked on his own.
      He died.

    Although not my favorite army, I consider this to be GW's crowning achievement in terms of army books.
    There was so much lore in that book and so well written, I would never tire of it.
    Also these were the good ol' days when most undead armies were lead by necromancers and liches.
    Silly models aside, I much prefer this design of Nagash than the one we got with endtimes. That artwork of him reading from the book surrounded by undead has epic written all over it.

    Could've mentioned that despite being released as 4th edition army book, this was used in 5th edition as well. Dedicated 5th ed. Vampire Counts book was released during the fifth edition, but at the very end of it (like year before sixth edition). For most of 5th, people used that one, which was pretty common for 4-5th editions. Many armies played with both 4-5 editions with same army book after all (skavens, dark and wood elves, dwarfs, orcs and goblins, the empire, chaos dwarfs).

    This was my first army book for my first army. I loved it. Tons of variety, fun characters, distinct gameplay. My favorite units were the undead chariots. I used to love raising them behind enemy units the dansing them into combat all in a single magic phase. Also loved giving Settra an artifact that made him explode when he died, mounting him on a chariot, and slamming him into the enemy like a missile for impact damage plus artifact damage and mummy curse when he inevitably died. Nagash was such a badass. Wights were neat, especially the metal mounted wights that were super impressive models when first released. Such a cool army.

    So pre-split Undead are, and always SHALL be, a Christmas army in my mind.
    (I also actually received the Bretonnian army book and a box of plastic knights for Christmas that year).

  • @ChaosTicket

    I like how the Undead book is. The Vampire Counts and later Tomb Kings were expanded upon in lore and some units, but lost many basic options because they were split up.
    For example the Undead Horsemen with Lances were not in in the Vampire Counts list and I missed them. When they did reappear it was as a downgraded Cavalry in the Tomb Kings, and they permanently lost their Lances. The loss of this was a big blow that was never quite recovered
    Skeleton Warriors were a lot better in 4e than later thanks to equipment options. Heavy Armor, Great Weapons, Bows, and Crossbows(!).
    Zombie could equipment armor, shields, and Great Weapons.
    Wights could use Spears.
    Mummies were monster-infantry with great weapons.
    Screaming Skull Catapult artillery.
    Skeleton Chariots
    The glory of the combined Undead Legion is not regained until The End Times Nagash brought them back together about 20 year later.

    This is super interesting, thanks! Interesting to see how much stuff got re-used into other factions.
    I like where they ended up with the factions (at least my impression of them as of Total War Warhammer 3), but I do sort of wonder what might've been if they'd done it differently.
    *Undead* might've been the "horde undead" faction, characterized by huge armies of skeleton/zombie variants, the central faction strength would be its necromancers (and some lieutanant troops) being able to replenish reinforcements mid-battle, and they'd be led by a liche, gheist, or nazghar (in order: caster, evasive assassin type, and legally-distinct-nazgul warrior)
    *Vampire Coast* would remain shooty undead.
    *Vampire Counts* would change a lot, losing most swarm chaff (those are now undead troops) and gaining a lot more vampire variety. Basically just make minor versions of the variants they've already kinda explored: vargeists, cecrach, strigoi, etc. Essentially make vampire counts way more vampire than they are now.
    *Tomb Kings* I'd shift to make a bit more Egypt-inspired (and slightly less horde-like to space them out from this new Undead I proposed). So _currently_ they have Anusib-inspired hyena-headed Ushabti. I'd add all sorts of new versions of that
    * cavalry-sized Horus-inspired flying eagleman infantry,
    * human-sized Bastet-inspired catperson heavy infantry,
    * a tall Ushabti-sized Ra-inspired sunbeam-laser hero,
    * etc
    Basically it feels like there's enough room for all those factions to remain fairly distinct. Honestly while I love their faction design overall, I think there's so much potential for a High-Quality-Low-Quantity Vampire Count army that feels like the undead equivalent of Protoss from Starcraft, where it's all very powerful (and expensive) combatants and far less swarmy than the typical undead army.

    The best (and close to accurate) parts were the parts with oculus. It's fun watching people who may not have been alive when a book came out stumble through it and project their current feelings into it.

    Undead was sort of my first Warhammer army, as I got a box of plastic skeletons (including horsemen and a chariot!) for Christmas in 1989. I'd actually stopped playing Warhammer fantasy by the time Warhammer Armies: Undead came out so it's pretty interesting to learn a bit about a bunch of things that so many feel nostalgia for yet which for me all happened after my first time with the hobby.

    This wasn't Nagash's first appearance in the lore. He was mentioned in previous Army Books (primarily, I think, the Skaven book) and the Crown of Sorcery (his hat) was a major magic item (as worn by a special character, Azhag, in the Orc & Goblin book)

    Fun Fact : Wayne England accidentally trod on me at the original Cambridge store during its Game’s Day, he was looking for Terminator models for the event , I (12 years old) was crouched in the corner looking at the Snotling Models on the bottom shelves, he nudged me and exclaimed “oh sorry!” and gambolled on his way”. It was hardly GBH or Earth Shattering news but I was touched, literally by a God. RIP Wayne.
