Great video. Loved it. Love that he signed his funeral program for attendees. I think it was a great idea for Felix to plan his own send off albeit a few years early. I’m married to a modern day Felix. Born 100 years to late, he’d never leave these hills if he didn’t have to go to work. he’s a logger so he stays in the woods all day anyways and will rarely leave our homestead any other time. Hates town, avoids people but loves his animals. Fears God and loves old folk and children. I got me a modern day mountain man. Loved this story. Wonderful to hear these people being remembered. ❤
well said my friend, he was a neat fella I would have loved to have known
He was a man I would like to have known.
"U Go Girl" !!
I feel that forsure I tell people all the time I was born 120 years too late my heart belongs in the hills
I was told by my grandmother I was born 200 years to late. Lol, I guess she was right, I don't go alot from my farm now that I retired. And I wouldn't want to be you if you hurt one of my critters. My granddaughter and son live just down the road and one of them pop by every evening to see if I'm still upright lol. I have one thing I look forward to every year and that's gathering with a group of friends in the mountains and camping out for 10 days. That my big trip, rest of the year I look for that granddaughter and my son dropping by. Other then that people have to stop by and look for my out around the barn and animals lot, pastures. Had the husband for 36 years, cancer took him. So I just go about my day doing or not doing whatever I want. Had one of the best and not looking for another. And I don't understand why men think a female can't live by themselves and be happy. You make your life what you want happy or sad. I choose to be happy and enjoy the critters and woodland around me. And I always to busy for any requests for dating requests 😅 😂 be surprised have many will tell you they always wanted to date since high school. Yep, not biting that cookie. This man was right a good friend sure can be spoiled by getting married, l prefer the friendship.
I cant stop watching these videos, they are so good and I enjoy them so much
Thank you ❤️
I can now hear the accent in my head!! I'm Canadian!
My daddy used to say. "You can tell how much a man was liked by his funeral, and when your gone, your reputation you left still lives on". Thank you so much for digging up all these memories for me. 😊
❤️
life is so cruel in the end@@jcldctt
Uncle Bush lived life on his terms, admirable . Seems like him and mule had it all figured out!
well said, I have always admired these type of men
Very interesting & moving story about that old timer. FYI, the family name 'Breazeale ' is derived from the old Irish name 'O'Breasail' which comes originally from the Celtic 'Bres', a name which meant 'prince-mighty'. Seems like 'Uncle Bush' lived up to that name.
Wow! There’s something I didn’t know, thanks for sharing
Awesome. We know we're Irish and/or Scottish but the derivatives we don't know much about. Thanks
My bride tells family and friends my favorite saying, a man can never have a full life until he has learned to be alone and have a quite mind. That was wonderful, thanks for sharing.
Thank you friend
My daddy died tonight. I kinda wished we could have done something like this for him while he was still alive. I think he would have really liked doing something completely different from everyone else. Thank you for this story.
We, I’m so sorry. Peace to you and your family and rest for your father ❤️
So sorry for your loss. ☦️
I am so sorry for the loss of your Daddy 😢 My Daddy went home to be with the lord last January 27th 2023 💔 Prayers for you 🙏
I'm so sorry for your loss 😢
My Deepest Sympathies to You
and Yours.🌹🌹🌹
May God Bless You and
Bring Peace to Your Heart.
in Jesus Name. Amen
When our spirit/soul leaves our body, I don't believe it matters what anybody on this earth has to say. The only thing of importance at that second will be where our spirit/soul departs to.
amen
I have heard that we all preach our own funeral by the way we live. I think uncle Bush did that. He didn’t need a preacher to say good or bad about him he knew where he stood with his maker and was satisfied with that. A great story thanks for sharing.
Well said Roger
I’m surprised that he had a funeral at all. Men like him tend to not draw attention to themselves. Goes to show that you never know. Thank you for the history and story telling. I was raised in Appalachia and understand the mountain justice system and way of life well.
Well said Mark, preciate you brother
You bring my childhood back to me. Raised in the deep woods of southeast Texas by Scotch-Irish whom came from first SC, NC, Georgia, then Ark. They still lived the very rural ways when I was a child and I am so deeply grateful that I was able to live it.
Thanks for the stories. Its brings all my folks back to life again.
Thank you so much, have a blessed day
That was a wonderful story about an extremely interesting man! I loved it. Good job JD!
Thank you Joy!
Fantastic Story. It is ironic for me as we just took down several old Black Walnut trees recently. They have gone to the sawmill to be cut into boards, for a friend of ours that does wood working. He makes really nice pieces of furniture using Black Walnut lumber. There is nothing prettier than polished Black Walnut.
Thanks for the story to start our Saturday off.
Black walnut is by far - my favorite wood
As a new subscriber, I have to say that I've quickly fallen in love with these uploads about life in the Appalachian Mountains. I can't get enough of them now.
Happy to hear that, glad to have you here my friend
Wow! Amazing true story of a man who loved and never married and then planned his own funeral who hadn’t died yet. They should make a movie! ❤
It would be cool if they made one that was true. There is one out called "Get Low" but its 90% fiction
this was a great story uncle sounded like a kind and caring man that lived life the way he wanted to no matter what anybody said. thank you for making this video and telling his story
Thank you teardrop
I'm in Austria this week for work. Love listening to your stories. Keeps me grounded while I'm traveling.
Thanks Scott, stay safe
This is one of my favorite Appalachian stories that you have told!!! Awesome!!!! I love it!!!! ❤️👌🏻🙏😇😁
Thank you Charlene
This story intrigues me. I've gotta watch it again. As far as being buried before your dead I think it's a hell a hoot. Everyone is happy in the end, the ole man is happy he heard the preachers words with no disparaging words, the preacher was happy he had a large crowd to speak to, and the people... well then as now we're amazed and left thinking that's not at all a bad idea. I'm just left wondering what happened to ole mule? You out done yourself JD. 👍🏻👍🏻💯
Thanks James, I never could find out what happened to mule- he disappeared from the writings, I like to think he’s still somewhere out there eating apples and watching sunsets
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller mule reminds me of my friends ole mule Zeke, he's 29 years old almost blind and with only a few teeth he tries to eat but gets very little nourishment therefore he is slowly starving terrible to see. We've been debating putting him down rather than seeing him suffer. Undecided as of yet, hate seeing him go either way. Look forward to your stories every Saturday.
I absolutely love all the Appalachian stories! Cleveland Tennessee ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
thank you my friend, have a blessed day!
If a person wanted to arrange
their own funeral.
It would be best to either go
in disguise.
Or watch on a hidden camera.
Let people really think that they
are deceased.
Then a person would truly know
how to write their will.
I've learned that when someone
departs from this earthly life.
Lot's of so called friends,
become very ugly in their actions.
My grandfather was the type setter for the Joplin Globe when this happened. My mother made me promise, no funeral and no obituary when she died. Momma was 6 and she remember her daddy bringing home the issue of this live man having his funeral. When grandpa died he had no preacher only family and friends got to get up and speak, he didn't like preachers either. Listening to your stories brings back memories of my mothers stories. She grew up in a time where word of mouth was a way to tell history to family. 🙂
Thanks for sharing your story
I'm so pleased that YT had the good sense to introduce your channel to my search page. First time viewer, but I'm now happily subscribed with notifications ! Thank you for the very enjoyable story. I look forward to watching the other ones on your channel 👍
Thank you so much my friend! Glad to have you here!
That's a fine idea. I've been thinking about it for five years myself. I reclaim barns and have been saving wormy chestnut for mine😊❤
Love wormy chestnut
Many years ago,I was working at my grandmothers funeral home in Newport,we had an old mountain man come in to make his arrangements for his funeral,he told of his plans, brought in for us to keep,a casket he made himself,he told us where the grave was that he had already dug,and every so often,he would bring in some artificial flowers in,wrapped in plastic.I don’t know if I ever knew what happened to him,but I always thought it was an interesting story.
How bout that
Fantastic story. I'd like to have known that old gentleman. As for me, I want no funeral while I'm alive OR dead. And all the way back to my childhood here in southern WV, I've always been very comfortable alone and have spent countless hours like that playing, gardening, hunting, and working. I can definitely relate!
Thanks so much for sharing Brad
Good stuff
Thank you 🙏
This was a awesome but amazing story. Thank you for sharing it with us. God bless you and your whole family..🙏❤🙏❤🙏
Thank you, have a blessed day
Nice job Appreciate it
Thanks brother
If i'm not mistaken there was a movie made based on this story called "Get Low" starring Robert Duvall and Bill Murray.
There was, indeed, but it’s about 90% fiction
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller Everything coming out of Hollywood is 90% or more fiction.
I'll see you on the other side of the river has been told to me by family before they passed in appalachia......those words always hit home with me
me too friend, as I was writing this story, I felt like that was definitely a part of Uncle Bush mindset, especially since he had the song "on the other side of the Jordan River" played at his funeral
First time in a while I have been able to catch another of the great stories you tell, that was just brilliant.Man you know how to tell a piece of history that is very important. Keep up the great work that you are doing.
Thanks so much Michael! Preciate you brother, good to hear from ya
Incredible storyteller.
Thank you Scully, have a great day my friend
Adore living peaceful in these mountains.
No place Id rather be
I think we all can learn from this wise man. Sounds like he was a true visionary. And to tell his dear lady friend,”this ain’t goodbye, I’ll see you on the other side of the river,” is touching. I wholeheartedly agree with him. Thanks for sharing this story with us, JD.
❤️
What a great story! Uncle bush sounded like a very smart man! 🥰
I would have loved to have known him
What a great character eh.
I feel in love with him while writing his story
Absolutely love your stories. Your voice is so soothing that I could enjoy you telling stories forever.
Thanks James, hope y’all are doing well today
Excellent delivery on a good story.
Thank you!
I know someone who had a funeral 6 weeks before she died. She was one who kept a lot of stuff going. Keeping people mad at each other. It didn't work though, after her death, they found out no mad at anyone. All the ill feelings came from one source. Everybody is happy, happy, happy.
How bout that
I sure am glad I found this channel. Best stories on TH-cam by far.
Thank you Richard, glad to have you here
i had my funeral already! Jan. 22 1995 i died the only death i will ever die! i was born again, the old man died and the new man lives! John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. i passed away that day,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
amen my friend!
Simply love the way you tell the stories...Uncle Bush....what an old timer💞
Thank you my friend, have a good’n
Nice story, cool photos. 😊
Thanks
Diet Mt Dew is my favorite! But I think Uncle Bush and Mule were bringing something a bit more concentrated down the mountain! Lol
I reckon yer right too!
Great story. I enjoyed it.
😊
Thank you so much! I was wondering if people would like this story, have a great day!
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller Oh I love it. I've listen to it several times. One of my favorites
I reckon I’ll stay in denial

God bless the Ol’ Mountain folk.
good people, my people
Now that's a powerful question.. Caught me completely off-guard. Really gives you something to think about.
Morning Bella
Mornin' JD! Fantastic story, told like the storytellers of old and I hung on every word! Take care friend, and Lord willing I'll see ya next week....
Thanks Scott, have a good’n my friend
Sounds like some of my dad’s family. They were from Marshall N.C. Had one cousin who would run up the mountain when we went to visit. He later became a park ranger lol. Strange people but salt of the earth. Great story J.D.
Thanks for sharing Scott, have a good’n brother
I don't know how you will ever top this one! Excellent!
Thank you Anna, have a blessed day
I was intent on listening to every word and seeing all the dialogue and pictures. this was so wonderfully presented.
Thank you Maggie!
Amazing story. Thanks for sharing it with us. Had to watch it again, because I couldn't remember what he had said about Mulvena and him seperating. I just remembered the 'colorful language' he used. 😇
He was a character for sure
I found your channel today and watch this video. My last name is Brezeale. And our family tree spelled it a lot of different ways Not sure I’m any kin to this fellow. But he was a amazing man.
there is a great website about the entire history of the Brezeale family name, its ran by a fella named Mick Brezeale, who provided the photos used in this video. I think I have a link to his website in the video description. By the way, welcome to the channel! glad to have you here!
Great story. I have family in southwest Virginia and I love stories like this.
Thank so much Randall!
Great video, this was quite a deal. Loved it. Uncle Bush musta' been quite a man, everyone sure did love him. Keep these sad, funny, heartwarming stories a comin'.❤
Thank you Judy ❤️
I love these old stories. Thank you for keeping the stories alive ❤
Thank you!
The story is as pure as it can be.
And it has a message in my mind.
There is a message here
Good morning Storyteller it’s great to see another video from you
Amazing 😆 my gr gr grandmother had a tent revival of 6,000 & he beat her out by 2,000 more! She was born in 1864 too. Great story JD 👏 💗😃👍
❤️
I don't want a funeral. The only time my family has a reunion is when one of us dies. It turns into some kind of a party. My parents and I were so offended by my nephew's funeral/reunion/party (some of them got drunk and acted very badly) that we wanted nothing to do with a funeral after that. I don't want a funeral, I don't want a grave, and I want my ashes scattered over a river, lake, or a sea. No one gets a free day off from work to party over me.
thanks for sharing my friend, have a great weekend
Nice. Happy Saturday! Thanks for another great story. What is the movie called about him? I have never come across it.
It’s called Get Low, but it’s 90% fiction
I want no funeral, no obituary, and an unmarked grave. I want the world to take no notice of my passing.
In a hundred years, no one will ever know 99.9% of us were ever here.
What a great story 😊
Thank you 🙏
Your awesome stories mind me of my maternal grandad! Thank you so much.!
thank you! Have a blessed day my friend
Another great story. Ol cave creek is full of people now. 70 to Lenoir city busy all the time.
Is that right, how bout that
Gonna have to run out to Crab Orchard to let Dad listen. He sure does like your stories and since Mom died in November he will connect with this man.
❤️ ❤️ ❤️
What a quirky man he was.. I can’t really understand why he did all that but to each there own🤷♀️ as for me I don’t want a funeral.. don’t care what anybody thinks about me😊 only care what Jesus thinks about me ♥️🙏👍🏻
Thanks for sharing Lori, hope you are doing well my friend

Great story
Thank you !
Thanks JD, wow another great story from a very different era but so very interesting. 👍🏻
Thanks Kev, I'd have loved to had a glass of those apples with Uncle Bush.

I was thinking about it, and I reckon with his plenty of vegetables and a few Squirrels, his apple juice would be about all we’d need in life. 🤤😋
Thanks ❤
Thanks Lana ❤️
I remember hearing about the funeral, but this is the real story of why he did it... so much better! The love story part tore me up...😢
I'm not sure I'd want to hear what folks had to say about me 😏
Great story JD 😎👍

"I'd rather be alone than wish I was" is one of my favorite quotes from that guy named "Unknown".

This is the storylime of yhe Robert Duvall movie called " Get Low".
Get low is loosely based on this story, but Get Low is 90% fiction
Sure there is, a living funeral is alright. People need to give people their flowers while they are alive. I try to make people know i appreciate them, respect and love them and have enjoyed being around them. I would appreciate knowing how people feel about me. And he was right, a living funeral will bring people to really speak. Shame people can't tell people how to feel about a person. Best be letting people know because after death you are just speaking to the wind. 😂😅
I wonder if he was Mulungeon?
I don't think so
I've often thought of being at my own funeral, but, seriously, no one would be honest. You ask another woman how she looks, she will never tell the truth. You look beautiful in that dress
Bet there isn’t any other funeral programs signed by the deceased..
Exactly
Uncle Bush told the right man cause it made many newspapers and see the Circus that ensued. Glad the Preacher did good.
yes, so it started with an article being posted in Kingston Tennessee which was a very (and still is) small town. Some how the Associated Press got wind of the story... and the rest is history
I think I would enjoy having my own funeral while I was still alive, I would just sit there and listen to all the many lies people would saying just how much they they love me and they always meant to come visit but could never find the time. Yeah that would be quite a funeral.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for this story. I think I would've liked to meet that ol' timer, but I wonder what he'd think of me. Part of me thinks we may've got along if I didn't bother him too much.
haha! I feel the same, im a good listener and I wouldn't want to say anything to get him to unleash on me!
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller I knew an old woman like that she came to the West side of Washington State from the Dakota's, sometime in the '40's when she was a young girl. I used to board my horses at her place. She was half blind and used an old hoe as her walking stick. A spoon could stand straight up in her coffee. She wasn't too fond of her family, as they were always trying to get her in assisted living. She was my dear friend. I think of her fondly and often. Oh, my lord! The stories that girl could tell.🪶
I don't want a funeral of any kind here where I retired to TinyTown for a lower cost of living. I'm the last one in my direct family line and nobody else needs to be bothered, not even my few really good friends here. What I want and have been promised is a grand-slam wake back in my ancestral land of Ireland. Not that I was ever a very important person there or anything, but that's where I still have relatives all over. And friends of many years standing. The person designated as executor of my will has a lot of property here at TinyTown where she'll just pick out the best tree (oak would be nice) and let me have a natural burial there. She's half Irish herself. Her father came over in his 20's and so taught her the right traditions attached to that. No preaching or speeches. She'll play recordings of a few of my favorite songs like 'Lone Pilgrim' (Dylan), 'Great High Mountain' (Jack White), and even 'Up Went Nelson' (Go Lucky Four) just for kicks. Several nobody could get away with playing in any church, at least not stateside. I'm preparing a special tape. So it will be a proper sendoff even if I can't be here to see it. I'm glad Uncle Bush got his final wishes too.
Where is TinyTown?
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller - US. Central Midwest. I'm only 2nd-gen Irish American. Grandparents and gg's left Ireland one jump ahead of war criminals Dev and Churchill, under 'creative' Welsh identities after the Collins assassination; on to Canada where Irish Canadians in the RCMP helped them across the border into the wilds of upstate Maine in a winter blizzard according to family lore. Dad was the first born here, and he married another 1st-gen. So I was still raised very, very Irish. When jumping rope, we kids favored the chant, "Up the long ladder, down the short rope; to hell with King Billy and God save the pope." But that was pretty common even in the US back then. At least I got a good Jesuit education.
I agree with the preacher some people need to hear it but how many people will be honest to your face that is the problem
yup!
I'd have to care what People say about Me first.
