How to Live a Meaningful Life

  • Friends, I had the great good fortune of sitting down for a conversation with Jordan Peterson, Jonathan Pageau, and John Vervaeke about the crisis of meaning, especially among young people. As a society, we're losing a sense of and orientation toward objective value. We need great Catholic scholars who reverence and know this wisdom tradition and who can teach it effectively, drawing young people back into a sense of a meaningful life.

Bishop's point about "scientism" is right now, except that I work in the Biological Sciences department at a university, and the scary thing is, many or most of the atheist and agnostic people who have traditionally subscribed to scientism are now accepting the social philosophy of CRT (and inter-sectionality) without asking for evidence, research or proof via the scientific method. I'm not sure how to wrap my head around that yet. Thank God I have Bishop Barron's videos to come to after my many conversations here to learn how to navigate some of these waters.

    • @pjsmith4369

Now that is frightening. If CRT is creeping into actual Sciences such as Biology, I am astonished!
What tools and experiments can you use to study such a concept via the scientific method.
If it were just in the social sciences, I could understand that. But Biology? Something is really wrong here.

@Matthew Arenson Only privately in dare I safe, a "safe" conversation with a former chair, the person who hired me, who I asked to be able to discuss these things with. More importantly, it is really fascinating if not scary, as if a part of the brain shuts off and is overridden by political ideology. When I mention that these philosophies really only exist within the echo-chamber of higher education, the reply is "no, it is in industry too", as if that makes it OK, and when I say that half or more of our society disagrees with these ideas, I just get a blank stare, as if she doesn't know what i am talking about. That is my frustration, not just the philosophy itself, but what seems to be a naive or arrogance surrounding it.

    • @danieltracy7136

Ultimately it seems CRT, etc reduces all action and thinking merely to subjective politics, and requires a demeaning and dehumanizing of any "heretics" who dare raise a question.

And why did the fact that only 50% of Christians bother going to Church left you feeling that there was nothing to be afraid of?
I am truly wondering how you came to these conclusions, that affected you so dramatically? Just your own thinking and ideas or some outward things that changed your mind?
You were contemplating ideas about God as a very young person.
I was also puzzled by why none of my friends were going to be able to go to Heaven with me, because they were in the wrong faith.
But I am much older now and have come to understand the love God has for every soul - no matter what they believe or do not believe.

Yes we need more Saints! Every one of us - all Christians should order our lives to become Saints.
Our hypersexed culture and hyoersexed materialistic economy bombards us every day that to be hedonistic is the norm. We need to figure out how to live and show by example something vastly different.
I could go in for an hour on this but no time right now.
We are so blessed by Bishop Barron in proclaiming Catholic Truths in such a beautiful and True way. And we are also blessed by his association with Jordan Peterson (future St. Peterson after his full conversion!)

What is the meaning of life? Essentially to live a good life. How? By living in Communion with God and God’s creation. How? Love. How do we show love? Worship, proclamation, and service. How? Using our own gifts talents and abilities in service to others. To do that, we need the real and universal goods, as well. I teach this to my intro theology courses in 8 weeks. This video was a great way to summarize these ideas in 10 minutes. Thank you, Bishop! 😃

    • @PatrickSteil
      @PatrickSteil 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awesome summary.
Do you also include that love requires obedience, suffering, self denial, etc? I think that is the watered down Christian message of today - that love just means “be nice and serve at a soup kitchen every once in a while”.
      Where do you teach this?

    • @phillippillin96
      @phillippillin96 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Patrick Steil Thank You! I teach that love is willing the good of the other because of who that person is (a beloved other). We do not love because someone is nice to us, Aristotle suggests that is selfish. I suggest that, although charity is crucial, our whole lives are to be a life of service. It's a tragedy that as more and more young people have embraced the ideology that good is merely subjective and the truth is "whatever I make it", suicide rates have increased 24% from 1999 and 2014. And according to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is now the leading cause of death in the United States. In embracing a Me-ism philosophy, people have found that there is no longer any meaning for their lives. It is only when we embrace the God who is the source of love and all good, that our meaning, a life centered on Him who loves us even more than we do, becomes clear. For all Catholics reading this, we need to strive to become Saints.
I learned somewhere that we must not simply become a channel of grace (a channel can mean doing good works but we don’t live up to the Ten Commandments in our private life), but rather a reservoir of grace (reservoir means we take all our strength and grace from God and living it out into the world and become great examples to everyone).

While specific theories may vary, there are always two common aspects to answering that question: some sort of global schema to understand one's own life and the belief that life itself is meaningful. Being a christian, yes, and I like to suggest also reading Michel de Montaigne instead of Michel Foucault. "Savoir jouir loyalement de son être" would be Montaigne's own answer to the question, I think. Stephan Zweig commented that like many good things in life, we discover Montaigne late. Better late than never. Oh yes, how many of us live our lives as we mean to live it, as opposed to simply living?

Bishop Barron, this "Crisis of Meaning" sermon is spot on. In the early 80's I heard Mother Angelica speak in person on this topic. I'm a 55+ old woman and I still recall and reflect on her wisdom during dark times. She loudly proclaimed with her feisty spirit and pointed finger to hundreds of young people "you do NOT have an identity crisis! You have Purpose as a child of the Living God. Seek, Study, and Live your FAITH!" My life has not been without failures, suffering, or doubts, but it was forever changed that day in Steubenville Ohio. I am blessed to say my life has been meaningful, purposeful "In Christ" and I continue to be strengthened by Communion and the Catholic faith. Young people do need to hear from more great Catholic mentors and saints! Bless you Bishop...

Bishop Barron and other brilliant Catholic educators have pointed out many times, the desires of this world are always temporary, they never satisfy us, as soon as we achieve what we thought earlier as our "life goals", sooner or later we will lose the joy and the excitement of those achievements and we are left wanting again for new desires and dreams to make us happy; and more often than not we fail to achieve our goals and dreams of this world, or fall short. Long story short, the desire for the ultimate meaning of life is to be with the very Creator and Author of life, of happiness, God; who is above science, who transcends our sense organs, who is Eternal Life in everlasting joy.
Everyone naturally doubts what they don't fully understand yet, sometimes the truths may appear ridiculous and unconvincing at first. 'Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”' (John 1: 46)

I'm currently reading your book "Seeds of the Word: Finding God in the Culture". I'm questioning whether objective value is what you present in this book. That is, the biblical truths threaded into the movies and books that are discussed. I'm guilty of much subjectivity and it can drive one up the wall after a length of time.

As an artist I would like it if Bishop Barron could expand on the idea of the objective Catholic aesthetic values as a means to search for higher meaning. I’d like to make art that is meaningful, but I’m not sure what that means exactly other than saying it aligns with my own aesthetic tastes. I’ve looked into this question before by listening and reading Roger Scruton, but I guess I am so steeped in the Post-Modern ideas of art, through a kinda cultural osmosis, that I have a hard time in saying, “this thing is objectively beautiful.” With that said, I do think there is especially a sense of beauty, for example in art nouveau architecture or especially as seen in the human form as depicted in the Western Artistic tradition. Yet, again, I can only say that it is my own taste.

I’m no artist but maybe find inspiration by visiting beautiful Catholic Cathedrals. Also be inspired by the Catholic genius musicians like Bach and others (I think I heard he was Catholic).
And then also order your life toward being a saint and he will direct you! :)

Preston, I have the same issue with my art. I’ve been all over the place watching other artist’s videos instead of just quietly listening to and being lead by the Holy Spirit in my art. Post modern art is steeped in subjective abstract expressionism, and what some artists create from that I wonder where their sense of beauty and meaning came from at all. When I look at the art shown in Bishop Barron’s daily rosary videos, to me I am seeing great art about the life of Christ and that’s where I find true love for the work as developed by the old masters who imho had deep reverence for Christ Jesus and the church. Best of everything on your art and spiritual journey.

    May I take exception?
The current younger generation were brought up in a world ruled by baby boomers, as we all know. The baby boomers seem to have had to battle envy to an extreme.
Growing up in a world beset by envy means 2 things:
    1. Deflect heat, do everything in your power to look innocent and lacking in power, not possessing agency. People lacking agency only have what those who control the structure allow them to have, and looking that way pits the pride of those in control of structure against their envy.
    2. Do not engage in long term planning. If you seem to be enjoying something then someone more powerful will swoop in and either destroy it in front of you or take it for themselves. Only invest in passing, shabby pleasures which give pleasure then evanescence before another can take them away.

In short: A meaningful life is one characterized by living in accordance with values. Hmmm. I might throw out if you value your life, it most definitely has meaning ... to you at least. If at the end of your life, you find if full of value -- satisfying moments and cherished relationships and maybe experiences and achievements, then it has been meaningful.

    Your Excellency,
I am a Philosophy student. I've just begun my two year long 2nd cycle in Philosophy. Though my primary interest is the teaching of St Thomas Aquinas, I'm forced to concentrate this cycle studies in Contemporary Philosophy, whence I've decided to study Neo-thomism (I hope it gives me broader bases to make a doctorate in Thomas Aquinas afterwards).
I tell you this in the hope that you could give me some suggestion of important topics to study. I myself have great interest in Metaphysics and Natural/Philosophical Theology, though I understand that Ethics are a more pressing issue in our contemporary world.
Could you please give me some insight into what topics could be relevant, from a religious and philosophical standpoint, to the contemporary dialogue? I'm asking your help to better serve Christ and His Church!
    Thank you very much!

If you want to know what young people are thinking and feeling, invite them on to converse!! I know you have talked to many Bishop, but when you keep talking ABOUT young people rather than TO young people it sends the wrong message. It also might be an interesting idea to do a video talking with Lapsed Catholic youth. I dont know if that is possible but it would be a great video.

And yet, I have no idea how to have my children return to the Catholic Faith.
I am in my late sixties. I brought up all of my children in the Catholic Faith. I was the one who did the catechesis for all their Sacraments, besides what they were taught at their Catholic School. We tried to make Sunday Mass a pleasant time by going somewhere they liked afterwards. ( We had no close relatives around because my husband had to move from our home city for work )
None of them are at all interested in Catholicism, except for one, who is “somewhat” Catholic.
And I love them all so much. Their lives are the opposite of what I believe to be holy and right according to the Catholic Faith, but they all know that.
All I can do is try to live my Faith as an example and pray for them constantly. There is no point lecturing or judging. I just treat them with great love and respect because God loves them and they are precious to Him and to me.
