A great question. There is something maybe I find nicer aesthetically about the cd60 if you are playing more rock and pop. And maybe something more "folk like" about the f310. But maybe something a bit bigger and warmer about the f310. But they are so similar that you could just flip a coin. I don't think there is a clear winner. If I had to buy one of them and only one, maybe I'd get the cd60. If you can get a better deal on one than the other then I might let that make the decision. Hope that helps and I'm always grateful to anyone who shares my content with friends and family. Warm wishes from the North.
Great review. I’m now on the look out for a decent second hand CS40, for a youngster who loves the “toy” he bought with all his birthday money. I think it’s 1/2 size but I’m not sure and don’t want to burst his bubble. By Christmas he should have grown to the CS40. About 30 years ago I spent about 2 months looking at guitars and gave up when my ears became frazzled. A couple of months later I revisited a shop and quickly realised what I wanted. I still love my Guild Dreadnaught made in Rhode Island. Even the wrong notes sound great !!
Thanks for the comment! Guitar sizes are literally made up ... I did a video about it, but sadly it's on an old channel of mine that I might have deleted... 1/2 isn't half size... It's just smaller than 3/4 size... Which isn't mathematically 3/4 it's just the size smaller than full size 🤷🤦. Way to go humans, we could have got it right when the system was invented... But we didn't. I don't know if your youngster is into Moana, but I have a video with tab in where you can play along with the original, all the way through using pretty much one finger! I hope that is useful. And I'm always greatful for a subscriber, or to anyone who shares the video with friends. Next guitar related video will be part two of how to solo. Coming out in a month or so. Videos on computer programming and the Finnish language between now and then 😁 have a top day
@@soundtuition I took my guitar to the Western Highlands and happened to play it while a young cousin was visiting, so it was a really nice surprise to learn he’d bought one. I’m just back and gave him a start and he certainly has passion !! I look at Moana thanks.
May ask you something? Should I get humidity modifier? The humidity were I live is around 35-55 is it good ? And does it matter if I use the guitar a lot or store it in its case?
Im looking for a guitar that will sound good on recordings. I do some rock and some bluesy soul stuff. I have an epiphone pr5e that i use on stage because it sounds good when plugged in but it does not sound that good miced up. Do you think this will sound good in a mix? Thanks for a good video 👍🏽
I think the most important thing is that you are playing and recording. So if the F310 will get you doing that, then that's great. But it is an entry-level instrument. If you can wait a bit, save up and invest in something better then I would suggest doing that, also depends on what you are doing with the recordings. If they are just for your amusement then just get recording 🤟 if you are trying to record a master piece then a better guitar would be a better choice. Can you practice on your guitar and then rent an expensive instrument just for recording? For example there is a place in helsinki that will rent you a 3k guitar for like 70e for the month I think. Maybe see if that's an option where you are. And also obviously, recording is an art in itself. A great guitar recorded by a bad engineer will still soind bad... I really hope that helps and have a great day.
Sadly i don't have any experience of the cort. Can you go a shop and try both in real life? If so, definitely pick the one you want to pick up and play the most. Everything else is just a bonus 😀
My own piece of music, Mysterious Waters. I think Waiting for Dawn is my only, own piece of music, that I have on TH-cam. If you get chance to listen to Waiting For Dawn, let me know what you think. Warm wishes from the North.
Thanks for the comment, and welcome to my channel 😀. With guitars like many things you get what you pay for. So the fg800 is the more expensive and higher spec instrument. If the extra money doesn't mean you can't eat then I'd get the fg800. I would always buy the best instrument and then enjoy the quality. But if you just want to give guitar a try and think you will either sell it soon or buy a better one, then the f310 won't lose as much value and you'll be able to easily sell it on if you price it correctly. Hope that helps. I would also recommend trying a nylon string yamaha cs40 if you don't have super large hands and if you are a complete beginner. Easier to play to get started. But nylon strings give a very different sound... hope that helps. Warm wishes
I'm really glad you like the vid and your guitar! I like dreadnoughts. Really good sound. Though not the easiest guitar to play until you've built up the strength to not feel like you are wrestling with it 🤣 Check out my video of my own composition Waiting for Dawn if you haven't already, I use an R Taylor Style One in that video. In general all beginner guitars have higher action than needed. The reason being that fewer people are going to return a guitar for having an action that is too high than will return a guitar if it is buzzing and the strings bottoming out. The more recent Yamaha f310s (like within the last 10 years) aren't bad at all. And won't be the make or break of if you will progress. But you have a few options if you are a complete beginner. 1) start with a nylon string guitar as they are easier to press the strings down on. But then if you really want to play steel string, there will be a difficult transition later on. But imo that's better than playing a steel string guitar, not getting anywhere because you find it too difficult to press the strings down and then quitting. 2) watch some videos on setting up the action and possibly file the saddle down and adjust the truss rod yourself. 3) Pay a professional to set the guitar up. But then it might be better to spend that setup money on buying a more expensive guitar in the first place. Definitely go a shop and try an f310. Also even though Yamaha have great consistency, guitars are still living machines. So try a few 310s and see if you find one better than another. Really hope that helps. Like, sub, share with friends etc etc 🙏🙏🙏
@@soundtuition thx mate..gud explanation 👍🏻👍🏻..recently survey for new guitar..my older ones broke few days ago..using very cheapies b4..want to buy gud quality ones yet affordable ..juz learned about action string setup..dont know about it b4 this..completely beginner😂😂..juz ask opinion bcoz there are few store that offer f130 with low action setup for few bucks..thinking whether it worth or not..bcoz some say factory setup already low action setup..some say not..still considering to buy f130 or cort ad810..but cort have lil bit higher price tag
It depends on what you mean. They don't make such a thing (to my knowledge). But yes, you could put nylon strings onto an f310, but then you would need to set it up. And it isn't designed for that, so it would never be optimum. Just never put steel strings on a nylon string guitar, or you will break it (seen that a few times). If you had the time and wanted to gain the experience, then totally put nylon strings on any steel string guitar. But if you don't have much free time and don't like trouble shooting then I don't recommend it. I really hope that helps. Have a top day!
@@soundtuition thank you for feedback, one more question please, opinion of Ibanez tcy10e for full begginer as first guitar or f310? Thank you in advance
Hei. I don't have any experience of the Ibanez, but just taking a quick look at the spec. It's around £70 more expensive than the Yamaha 310. And has a pickup. Looks like the body is a little smaller and possibly not as deep... my main advice would be to try them both and buy the one which inspires you the most. The most important thing is that you pick it up and enjoy playing it. If the money doesn't make a difference I'd perhaps buy the Ibanez. But if you are a complete beginner I'd still possible recommend a 3/4 nylon string guitar. I can't remember if I discuss my reasoning in this video or not. But if you really want a steel string guitar and the difference in price isn't a problem then get the ibanez, if the price makes a big difference then there is nothing wrong with an f310. And if nylon strings don't bother you then maybe a cs40 would be worth at least comparing to these two. And second hand is often a good choice to save money. Warm wishes and let me know how it turns out. Also watch my longest video (1.5 hours) on music theory because it's the best video ever made (imo 😂)
@@soundtuition At the moment I'm waiting for my first guitar to arrive! The F310 Had a really great offer and your review helped me pick it up :) Honestly I'm a complete music noob but I'm really inspired by the likes of Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen, Slash, Tim Henson and for acoustic specifically, Marcin!

I've owned so many guitars, if a random soul asked me what acoustic they should buy, without any other information, I would confidently point him towards this F310, the neck is beautifully worked, I know it will perform, it will be durable(good luck breaking it on accident ^^), it will stay tuned, and possibly make you sound better than you deserve, hehe. I just took a chance on mine, in a hurry, I rushed in, spent 15 minutes looking at the best of the best, then was handed this by someone asking me to tune it for him... I ended up playing it for about 15 minutes(sorry dude), and I was ready to shill out the $400 or so I thought it would cost, omg what a mind fk, doubts flooded as to why it was below, very far below what I expected... zoom to a year later, never a second of regret! The only other guitar I've felt this way about was one special Baby Taylor that my friend had spent a lot on perfecting as his travel go to guitar. Such big timber goodness from such a light, but tight body, with bright starry highs, and bellowing lows I wasn't used to hearing in such budget friendly acoustics. I don't know why I feel so positive about his acoustic, I've had Yamaha's in the past, 6 and 12 string, but nothing's had this feel like a friend that's always ready to get and have fun. Just get one, what's to lose?! Omg, the price can't be any more perfect Oo
Great to hear such a positive story! I opened the case if one of my guitars the other day and the bridge had broken off. There is a picture on my TH-cam feed. 2,000e guitar 🤣. Hey a little late to the party... just ordered a Yamaha F310, what is that tune you play at the very end and do you purposely grow your right thumb nail for picking?
Hello! You are not late at all. I'm still very present, and I am releasing new videos all the time. Can you give me a time stamp of the piece you mean? Might be Mysterious Waters, which is my own composition... 😀
Yes that is mysterious waters. I hope to record it this year some time. I have two other pieces I wrote on youtube. Warm wishes th-cam.com/video/gk0igSqmc-E/w-d-xo.html
I forgot to reply about the thumb nail. So it's normal in classical guitar playing to use nails on the thumb and all the fingers of the picking hand. And classical guitar has been my main style my whole life. I have a degree in classical guitar performance from the RCS. But I have played and taught most styles from jazz to industrial metal and all things in between. It's one of the main things I love about guitar. It is such a diverse instrument. No one needs nails to play guitar. But if you play nylon string it might be worth experimenting with. I hope that helps. Have a great day
Yes very much so. The point being I would almost always recommend a nylon string guitar for a complete beginner. But if you really want to try string then a tabglewood Sapling or a baby taylor or taylor big baby are all good choices. I hope that helps. Warm wishes. Like subscribe, share with friends, listen to my band Three in the Dark, etc etc. Have a great day
I have been playing a nylon string ukulele for about 8 months, thinking it would be a decent gateway into playing a guitar later. I think I'm going to go checkout how these guitars sound and feel in person at a shop and take a call. Thanks, again!
What model do you have? The f310s in the last ten years aren't set up badly. But most guitars can benefit from having a professional set up. But also if you are a practical person it's not super difficult to learn to set up acoustic guitars.
Hello. A good question. I have never played a 3/4 steel-string Yamaha. But almost all Yamaha products are great for the price. The 3/4 steel string acoustic I have owned for many years is the Tanglewood Sapling. Great value for money. But it needed setting up and the action lowering. I also added a k&k pure mini pickup in it so it was perfect for traveling and gigging. Very old video of me using it live with an AER alpha. Hope that helps. Very grateful for a subscriber. th-cam.com/video/rBnsfhmzeRI/w-d-xo.html
At 6:33? It's called Mysterious Waters. It's my own music. I hope you like it. Check out my originals playlist. Although that piece isn't there yet. Warm wishes
If you jump to 6:30 within the video there is an example. If you only want to play fingerstyle and have small hands I'd check out something like a Baby Taylor. It depends on your hands and on the sound you want. But any guitar will do anything if you practise enough 😁. The F310 is a fine all round guitar if you like the dreadnought sound and size. Hope that helps! Please subscribe! 😁🙌🎵
@@soundtuition actually I have a Yamaha C40 classical guitar which I bought for learning fingerstyle. But now I like the sound of steel string guitar and guitar teachers here teaches on steel string guitars for beginners .So should I go for f310 ? and are dreadnoughts are good for fingerstyle or should I go for concert cutaway models ? Pls help
@@drstrange94 if you can find one cheap second hand and check it is set up correctly, then you can't go wrong. If you are unsure then just buy one. Better to make a decision than spend time over thinking it. The string tension is a lot higher on a steel string. So you will need time to get used to the difference. Whatever you decide. Get your teacher to check it is set up correctly. And get playing! Warm wishes
The top is definitely laminate, I assume the back and sides are also. But on a quick search I haven't been able to find that written anywhere for sure. I like to add value to education so on a small point guitars are usually made of laminate and not plywood. The difference is that plywood has its layers' grain orientated 90degrees from one another. Whereas laminate the grain runs the same way between the layers. Hope that's helpful. Sorry I can't be of more use. Personally I wouldn't stress over laminate Vs solid wood. You get what you pay for with instruments. If solid would is important to you then that's totally cool. But I would look at the big picture. How much do you like the guitar? How much do you enjoy playing it? How often do you play it? Those questions are more valuable to everyone than the technical spec. It's not like a cheaper laminate guitar will explode. Super warm wishes from the north.
I'm often surprised by how quiet dreadnoughts are. I think their reputation for being designed to be loud has become overstated. I think they are loud if you are strumming the doughnuts out of them. But for finger style a nylon string guitar is actually louder. And total agree about you get more if you go up the range. Thanks for the comment and the thoughts. Have a top day.
Sound is a very personal thing. You really need to hear them both to decide which is best for you! But generally a better guitar just feels nicer to play and that's important for picking it up regularly. The more you enjoy playing the more you play and the better you become 😁 if you feel you have the time, play as many guitars as you can and make notes on how they sound and how much you enjoyed playing them to gain experience. If you are short of time but have the extra money then just buy the more expensive guitar. The more advanced you become the more you can use your experience to save money by spotting the guitars which are bargains. Hope that helps.
@@soundtuition sounds great, I believe the f370 has a better sounding tonewood round the sides and back which I thought would make it sound better as some others have said, but I completely understand. From the videos that I've watched, there is a slight sound difference but it really isn't as significant as it may seem. So because it's a guitar I want to get pretty early on in my guitar journey, I'll probably just get the cheaper one and have some extra money, maybe to put towards an even better guitar later on as you have advised. Thanks for your advice, have a great day!
Hello! Sadly I haven't tried one. Are you thinking about buying online or can you test it in a shop? I always recommend trying as many guitars as possible and talking to as many people about the differences as possible to gain your own experience and master skills. If you can't test it and have to buy online then general anything Yamaha won't let you down and more expensive is generally better if you can afford it. But you don't need an expensive guitar to become a great music. You just need practice on whatever guitar no matter how cheap. I really hope that helps. Like subscribe etc etc. And have a top day.

Very informative info..Great insights..I am playing the F310 for last 8 years. Great guitar and off-late drawn towards the tanglewood cross roads orchestra size. What do you think on Tanglewood orchestra
Glad you liked the vid. 🙏 Sadly I've never used the cross roads orchestra size. But! It looks very similar to the Tanglewood Sapling which I've had for years. I really like the Sampling and the Cross roads looks really cool. I put a k&k pure mini pickup in the sapling so I could gig with it, I'd definitely recommend. Hope that helps! I've been playing for years and mostly electrics but I picked up a Yamaha fg820 in a music store in Tucson Arizona last year and loved the feel and the sound with d adario orange extra light strings. I'm stuck in Mexico and the only Yamaha I can get here is the f 310 through Amazon should I buy it? I miss playing while I'm stuck here are they comparable? Btw gr8 video I think your answer will be yes?👍
Hello! I'm always happy to hear someone enjoyed my video. Thanks! I've sadly never played an FG820. But just looking at the price difference I'd expect the fg820 to be noticeably a bit better than the f310. But if the f310 is all you can get your hands on, then you have your answer already ☺️ any port in a storm, if it keeps you making music 🤘and as you've played for years you'll be fine with the f310. It's a bit of work to get the most out of the f310. It's not the easiest guitar in the world to play. Hence it's not my go to suggestion for a beginner. Sound wise, a dreadnought is a dreadnought so I think you'll enjoy the sound and the look. Have you ever tried the elixir phosphor bronze nano web strings? If you don't like changing strings they last almost forever! Hope Mexico is good. A friend has of mine has a climbing centre in Mexico city I think.
Dude if you get f370...just get it...one of the best sounding guitar for rhe price. Its may not always upto Fg series but kinda pretty close in sound quality and much much better than f310
@@ikusanjay great to hear and good to know so I can pass that knowledge on to others. Hope you liked the video. New vid coming out on the blues this week. Something no one ever says about the blues that is vital 😉
The key is always (sadly) practice. If you play guitars with different necks and different string spacings you get used to being able to play on any type of guitar. If you play ukulele and bass as well you get used to even a wider variety. You could replace the nut and change the string spacing. But I recommend just dig in deep and play it for a while until it feels like home 👍🎵🤘
@@drstrange94 do you mean like the bridge breaking and coming off from the guitar? I've seen that a couple of times with steel strings but it's rare and not necessarily more likely on the f310 than other guitars if the same price. But yes it is more likely on cheaper guitars in general, for obvious reasons (they are cheap 🤣). If the bridge does come off completely you can drill it, put dowles in and re glue it and it's usually good. As always, please hit subscribe 🙏🙏🙏
I've never owned an fg800. But as I say in the video, the shape is the most important thing. So if you like a dreadnought sound and feel then go with that, if you like the more delicate less mid driven sound of a grand auditorium then go with the Brunswick bf200. I have a bf200 and I think it sounds better than it feels. I like the look and sound of a grand auditorium. Can you try both in a local shop? My Yamaha f310 was better built and better set up than my Brunswick bf200. So also whichever you choose, take it to a professional to check the setup and see if they can improve on yeh factory setup. Hope that helps Merry Christmas!
Totally true. But (imo) if a person finds steel strings off putting, it is worth trying a nylon string guitar and even perhaps one with a shorter scale length to see if they enjoy it more and therefore play more. But you are quite right they are different beasts. And if a person has to have the sound of a steel string guitar then I wouldn't suggest getting a cs40. Have a top day and any help growing my channel is greatly appreciated 🙏
Bro..today i noticed..few small pores on the guitar binding.(only on the bottom body portion of the guitar binding )..is it normal for a new guitar to have ?
Hello. It's very difficult for me to say without seeing a picture. Could you video it. Upload it to TH-cam as a private video and then send me a link and I'll take a look at it. The best answer I can give without seeing it is that as long as it tunes ok and sound ok then don't worry about small thing. Just enjoy playing and play as much as possible 🙂 Hope that helps.
It's a mistake if u wanna play steel string to start with naylon string guitar. If u use extra light strings on Yamaha F310 it's realy ezy to press a string , but if u start with classical guitar u will have frustrating adjusment time when u switch to steel string
There is definitely a large difference between nylon and steel. From my experience IMO it's better that people get a few years under their belt on the easiest guitar possible and build up some strength. And then they are more likely to have the patience to overcome the frustration of changing to steel string because they are already invested and can already play some cool music. Whereas if a person quits in week 3 because the guitar is too big and the strings too uncomfortable for them then the student never makes it out of the starting gates. But it's a very valid point you raise and obviously everyone needs to do what they feel is best for them. And I would suggest that this is why teachers are still better than online courses, because a student can discuss this with their teacher. Also if the teacher has guitars that they can rent or lend to students then a student can try different guitars at different stages in their playing career and make their decisions based on the feedback they get from experience. Thanks for the comment, a very valid perspective. Have a top day!

I am considering buying the Yamaha F310 or the Yamaha FG800. Which one would you recommend? And Why?
Warm wishes

Gud video..juz want to know is the string action is high or not? Some say quite high n need to setup low..

And f310 with naylon is not option?

Is Yamaha f310 good for fingerstyle ?
If you jump to 6:30 within the video there is an example. If you only want to play fingerstyle and have small hands I'd check out something like a Baby Taylor. @@drstrange94 if you can find one cheap second hand and check it is set up correctly, then you can't go wrong. If you are unsure then just buy one. Is the back made of plywood and not hardwood?

You definitely will! Just take it one day at a time and aim to make steady progress. Enjoy your f310 and enjoy playing some music.
F310 is quiet for a dreadnought but it is not solid sitka and is not scalloped so better move up to a slightly better one
FG 800 is a better alternative I guess
Is the f370 worth the higher price for the supposedly better sound?
