    This makes me think of many sci-fi books I've read more or less recently.
    Making your consciousness slower so that interstellar distances aren't a problem anymore => House of Suns by Alastair Reynolds, i.e. one of the best sci-fi novels ever.
    Transferring your consciousness as a light (or neutrino) signal => Manifold: Space by Stephen Baxter.
    The transition from organic to conputers (and beyond) => La Nuit du Faune by Romain Lucazeau (no translation in English, sadly).

    The more the digital beings concept is described, the more it sounds like they really lack a drive to well, do anything. They're more just waiting to die. Then the question becomes, is that living? A set of machines slowing themselves down and going into sleep mode, storing more energy and minimizing everything they experience and do as much as possible?

    • @ncedwards1234
      @ncedwards1234 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      Not too far off from what people do. The natural desire to automate work and relax in comfort is appealing to the point of detriment for many. And thinking about psychologically stressful thoughts is avoided as often as possible.
      I personally believe we are human because of our drives to do what is not necessary and what makes us struggle. The challenges posed in curiosity transcend simple necessity, and I wonder whether it makes sense to chill out and enjoy a short life or work hard to become immortal. What's our true end goal and how long can we chase it? I don't know, but if we truly have finite time before the heat death, I find it hard to decide between ending with a bang or chilling as long as we can.

    • @strikermodel
      @strikermodel 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@ncedwards1234 I see what you mean. I feel like curiosity was developed out of our ability to adapt to our environment, so we can explore potential other Avenues to keep ourselves alive.

      This may be the answer to the question: Provided we don't destroy ourselves, if 99.9% of a civilizations lifetime is spent digital, then why do we find ourselves biological? The answer could be that digital beings simply fast forward to the end of the universe, because there's nothing else worth doing.

    • @syoexpedius7424
      @syoexpedius7424 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Waiting till the universe gets cold to use more energy is consistent with maximizing experience, as it will be more efficient then.
      But I don't think aliens won't be curious, even if they can turn it off it doesn't mean they all will. Curiosity isn't human, any remotely intelligent animal has it, and even some present-day AIs need its functional equivalent.

    It entirely possible that a civilization could develop all this technology and be selective with how they apply it. Which is seemingly something humans are unable to apply discretion to. And it may possibly end our civilization if we can not learn to do so. And I feel like to an extent we are very aware of that- very aware that our indiscriminate application of technology and industry is destroying our environment. But I also suppose we don’t know what kinda lines an alien civilization would draw- cause we haven’t drawn any lines ourselves.

    • @katiebarber407
      @katiebarber407 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      its not really the technology per say thats destroying the environment. its the fact that all wealth and power is distributed into a tiny minority of the population who can go live in environmentally sealed bunkers while we all suffer. its because capitalism, in practice, diverts a majority of all wealth and power to a minority. which creates dictatorship of the rich given enough time.
      i think in a democratic society, humanity would act in a way that is beneficial for our species, rather than just a few members

    Everyone's trying to figure out if you'd be killed and a digital copy of you made or it's actually you being transfered to a computer, but I'm over here wondering how your digital self couldn't just be copied and who'd be the original if either ever were.
    Edit: what I mean is, if you are "digital" (as in binary 16-bit code or whatever) then it's possible to copy you. Even the POSSIBILITY of copying and pasting you, whether you choose to do it or not, means you're not exactly a "you" at all, you're just a collection of code that can be broken down to 1s and 0s; not containing the consciousness that many ascribe to being the definition of "you-hood" if you could call it that. After all, you can't exist in two places at once, so if you are capable of being in two places at once then it's likely there never was an individual you to begin with and we're talking about something else.

      It can only be copied, our memories from our brains will be collected, memories, speeches, Movements and Likings and All types of data's... But still that's just like Collecting WhatsApp messages right? So you will still die cuz it's not "YOU" who is generating the thoughts anymore, After your copy is made.

    • @DajesOfficial
      @DajesOfficial 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Depends on definition of "original".

    • @Zuuby
      @Zuuby 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I think this depends on the process. If you just collect the data through sensors and digitize it then there is an original. You can't copy something without having an original to copy from. If the process was gradual and your biology was perfectly interfaced with the technology before your consciousness develops, then you, the original, will be writing the data of your digital version without even knowing it. The entire process would happen without any copying and be completely passively written as you coexist and take advantage of the technology. There would never be another exact biological version, but you have encoded your own consciousness gradually throughout your biological lifespan until its end and you wouldn't even notice when your biological side completely dies if you didn't want to.

    Assuming this is the case (which it very much could be) this "transfer" likely wouldn't be used that much with the exception of genius scientist, since there isn't really a reason to become "immortal" if you'll still die, while a copy remains.

    It was a thought-provoking video indeed. I have grown quite skeptical of all the promises of technology because they treat human problems as just a combination of right inputs to give the right numbers and that's really not how it works; models might be deceiving because of how freaking smooth they work and, having a degree in economics, I know that it's not like that, no matter how enticing or beautiful the model is on paper. But the digitalization seems also to be a sad thing from my perspective, it was like that comic of the future just being people hooked to a dopamine dispenser. I ask: do I really want this? Honestly, I don't want to answer positively, but if true these species also went through these same questions and some might have just said "no" to it and let themselves expire.
