Katatonia have released their live performance of the City Burials single “Lacquer”, taken from the new live lockdown session album ‘Dead Air’
”Dead Air is a document and a remembrance of a strange and surreal situation, as well as true evidence of the love for music - both ours and that shown by our fans.” Vocalist Jonas Renkse explains what Dead Air means to the band.
April 2020 saw Katatonia present their eleventh studio opus, the poignant City Burials, to unanimous acclaim but with the unforeseen global event transpiring this year resulting in their album touring plans being put on hold, Katatonia conducted a more intimate “lockdown” show which was streamed live from Studio Grondahl, Stockholm on May 9th. Dead Air offers fans a full 88-minute set containing 20 tracks from the band’s extensive and illustrious repertoire to date, with inclusions spanning two decades of dark progressive greatness, and essentially also debuting three of the City Burials album tracks in a live setting.
The recording, mixing & engineering work was orchestrated by David Castillo, notable for his extensive body of work with Katatonia to date, and the performance itself was professionally filmed by Blackbox Video.

Unfurl-tier song.
I know people complain when they put out songs with little/no guitars but this is becoming one of my fav Katatonia tunes.
I wish there was a list of songs of this kind of style. Unfurl and Lacquer are both favorites of mine too - stunning stuff!
This song made me a Katatonia fan, not sure why I've been sleeping on them for so long.

slaying all skepticism of studio enhancements of the recording to that of live delivery nicely , I am reminded of a dream I had nearly four years ago, before discovering this band only last year.
I was in a strange country, in a nightclub setting.
It was set in a current time, yet I was in my early 20's as if I had somehow travelled to the future and landed in some strange European city, replete with canals and waterways, (no it wasn't Amsterdam ) marked with a cultural vibrancy that seemed so ubiquitous that to discover it at any other time other than that of the offering of its night time shadow, well..
i cannot speak to it directly as it wasn't directly spoken too .. in the dream.. but nonetheless..
so there i was in my twenties , fearless , with a mane of hair that I remembered well.. and in this bar I met some rockers that took this stranger in .. we left on a bit of an adventure .. wandering through the oddest of mazes of which , became clearer to me , to be patently historic.. in the same way a rabbit trail might be honored under some great penalty of law to ever disrupt.
Navigation in this sense , is therefore memorized before it ever becomes intuitive - I could be wrong..

Knowing that there’s a band like katatonia makes me wonder why its mostly mediocre bands that top the charts, especially nowadays when rock bands do not rock anymore and heavy metal lost the heavy aspect. Katatonia now sounds more pop, but you can still feel the heaviness.
