You don't need to reprogram the ECU, the air suspension or EAS as LR called it has its own ECU, unplug the harness and jumper pin 7 and 18 and 25 to1 and the warning will go away on the dash
In P38s the ABS light stays on until you drive off so that's completely normal. But you need to have one with air suspension working in my opinion once removed they ride like trucks and you loose quite a bit of off road capability they are honestly not that bad or costly to keep running especially in comparison to the newer LR stuff.
I agree. Its the best thing about the P38. Mine still has it too. EAS was a problem back in the day but now it has been mostly figured out, parts available and not very expensive.
I really do hope Roman and Andre keep on with the main aspects of TFL and not be relegated to the administration side of things.. This was a very typical TFL video I love. Tommy too was very good here and reminds me way back when he and Roman did the Prague to Pebble Beach. Nice one guys!
I have one. The abs light goes off when you start driving I believe over 5mph. Headliner is easy to replace with two of you. Undercharged batteries throw all sorts of errors up that go away when the battery is fully charged.

$20 scanner from Walmart will tell u if the car has cleared smog monitors. If u go buy a used car and the just erased the light the scanner will show Yellow on smog readiness.
Few vehicles are more expensive than a cheap Range Rover. 6:48 the A/C is ON unless the light is light on the A/C OFF switch (turning the light off turned it ON). My neighbor had this car and the cylinder liners failed pressurizing the cooling system with combustion gasses creating a pinhole in the block which sprayed coolant onto the belts!
The ABS light going off indicates a stored code in the computer. All you have to do is use the ABS code clearing procedure (in my H1 is jumping pin 4 and 15 in the OBD2 port and its the same ABS modulator).
terrafirma are one of the best names out there for Land Rover/Range Rover suspension upgrades. looking at the car, it looks like its been lifted, to my eyes
I love it! And this vid definitely threw out classic TFL vibes. Tommy's reaction was genuine and pretty ebulliant. I expect some fun offroading vids with it. Solid purchase!
Congrats to the Roman and the rest of TFL people, my favorite automotive channels on youtube. Is it just me or the guy who sold them the Range Rover (Jeremy) sounds like Ray Romano from "Everybody Loves Raymond"?
Fantastic to see what Roman did for Tommy who is so happy with this. I like many thought the red RR was past it but I think many also wanted to see an old RR restored or at least driving. I'd prefer a L322 but this ones great.
I have a classic soft Dash and the ABS light does exactly the same thing as it was designed in that fashion......ie: once you get past 5 to 10 mph then goes off. If the light on that means the abs is not active and they will just drive like any old fashioned one that doesn't have abs. Normally if that happens and it stays on if you are driving along and turn the ignition off then straight back on the light normally goes out
Exactly. I wish he was a little more informed. E.g. they were not designed to go 100k miles, what utter tosh! P38A is the last best Range Rover (solid axles), often misunderstood and insufficiently maintained by 3rd owners onward. Sleeper waiting to take off.
A CD changer AND a cassette tape player too! I'd buy it just for that alone. Now let's see how this one performs in the tests that TFL will undoubtedly put it through. Thumbs up on this purchase,... so far!
Can relate to the spares car thing. It happened to me as well with old Alfa Romeos and Citroens. Every single time the spares car turns out better and becomes the main car!
You don't need to reprogram the ECU, the air suspension or EAS as LR called it has its own ECU, unplug the harness and jumper pin 7 and 18 and 25 to1 and the warning will go away on the dash
Lift it, put on bigger tires, and you're ready for Moab. Just make sure the cooling system is OK, it is a soon to be 25 year old car. It is probably the best offroader Land Rover has ever made. The suspension is magical, better than the Defender, better than the newer L322, it it just a damn good car to turn into a very competitive offroader. Guess how I know . The seats are fantastic, and it is probably the best car in the world with rigid axels front and rear for driving on normal roads. Very comfortable.
I'm not sure why I love this series so much. Maybe its because the Rovers are such a, "but if they only did this"they would be amazing vehicles. Roman is so funny when he gets excited about Sirius radio 😂. My 81 year old dad loves his Sirius.
Had a neighbor growing up that was pretty good with German cars which in Southern West Virginia meant air cooled VW’s, he always told us,”if it ain’t dripping a little oil it’s out”.
My 2000 P38 is still running with 240K. a lot of work has been done and use it to offroad and camp. I am the third owner ,transmission and transfer case was swapped. Had to seal the moonroof permanently. was like a shower when it rained. All new gaskets and front and rear seals. True tracs front and rear, lifted with OME suspension. So fun little fact. Most of the sensors and electronics are the same parts and 1/3 the price and come form a BMW 740 same years which they still make the. parts for. They used the same brake system and Bosch electronics. Also you will eventually get the 3 amigos lights. It will not be the ABS pump. Get rid of the air suspension if it starts misbehaving.
Don’t tell Tommy the Range Rover is dead! Okay I think he’s gonna come ahead on this one. This looks pretty nice. I’ve always wanted one of these since I worked for a rich guy who drove me around in one as a teenager.
Loved the video I have a 1997 4.0 SE with 225,000 miles currently!!. Engine still running strong. i’ve had it for nearly 11 years and I’ve gone offloading with it many times. Absolute beast, absolutely wonderful car. But it’s time to move on. Are you guys interested in picking up another one? Mine has many issues cosmetically but otherwise it’s not bad.
Good call Roman. That other was a brutal rabbit hole I suspect $$$$$. This is pretty decent & has passed inspection!! Awesome! Love Tommy skipping right over the Maverick,, 😂😂. Good luck fellas!
Had the same model in silver over black leather with a 148000 miles on it, was in excellent condition ,every thing worked, minimal surface rust underneath. No warning lights and was completely reliable. Then some bugger crashed into it. It's all about the owners and maintenance not the car.
As a certified car guy, I can relate to Tommy. People (including my wife) see an old Honda ep3 parked next to a Mercedes Benz and don’t even bat an eye to the Honda. I ignore the Mercedes and go for the ep3. To most it’s a pile of junk. To me it’s a beaut. 😂
A number of years ago I had the displeasure of working at a shop in the Denver area that focused on these piles of junk. They can’t keep their own fluids INSIDE where they’re supposed to go, head gaskets are a twice-a-year job, bushings don’t survive because of all the leaks, oil pump gears shatter under normal use, all the lights on the dash are on, suspension bags leaking, compressors not working, air lines cracking, cheaply built, overpriced… I could really go on for quite some time. It baffles my mind that people actually like these things. And of those people most of them just have ‘sticker envy’ because of what the badge says. My cousin was looking at a D2 a few years ago and was about to buy it when I showed him what to look for and the cost to repair the issues. He confirmed bad head gaskets, all the abs/traction lights (3 amigos), it had active cornering which was leaking (normal), and a couple other things. Vehicle cost was something like $4k for it. Cost of repairs in his area was over $6k. Plus the tires were more than 15 years old. I’d truly love to see every single one of the vehicles that carry the badge to burn down. Check out Ultimate Adventure.
Wow - thats quite a statement.. You really HATE RR’s dont you? Its kind of sad that you cant find within you to appreciate these cars for what they are. I don’t own one - can’t afford them - but i turn my head every time I see one coming down the street - they just have this sparkling vibe around them. I am glad other car enthusiasts like the TFL crew feel the same way ✌️
@scandinavia6271 before I worked on them regularly I had no real issues with them at all. Having been very deep into the inner workings of a lot of vehicles I have a different perspective than just how a vehicle looks. Sure they look nice. But it’s just the makeup you’re seeing and not the ugly pig underneath. My previous reply is 100% fact and not just an empty opinion. But it’s not just range rovers that I don’t like. It’s anything with the land rover badge because they all had the same issues across the board. BMW definitely didn’t make things better during their rule, and jaguar made only marginal improvements. That v6 they made is an engineering nightmare.
@ cool. I guarantee I’ve done far fewer Toyotas than LR’s and for far simpler repairs in my 30-year career. Dozens of head gasket jobs and partial engine tear-downs (LR) vs a handful of head gasket jobs and TONS of basic maintenance (EVERYTHING else). The LR’s can barely make it to the basic maintenance without a handful of more serious or more inconvenient problem. A vehicle needs to be reliable and dependable. Neither of which can describe a LR.
.....why do they keep saying they can't pass emission for CO? Isn't it just whatever county Denver is in that even has emissions (much like other states)?
The EAS is not really that problematic. Its a simple system and parts easily available. Much better ride than springs too. I would never buy a p38 without it being on air.
I love this content. PLEASE DO A SERIES WITH AN L322! Get a NICE 06-09 and you will be impressed. They are amazing reliable trucks when they are maintained
Yes, the L322 LOVES MAINTENANCE! Even all the maintenance between scheduled services keeps them reliable and they easily run to their next maintenance.

I'd say drive the silver P38 Range Rover, and keep the red one for parts.

I live in a state without emissions so I'm ignorant about how it works. Why can you not just clear the codes right before you go in for emissions?
if theres a fault the emissions/engine management light comes back on at next startup
Because they check to see if it has done a drive cycle without any issues or failures (lights on).
To pass emissions the computer needs to have no codes AND must have the various self tests done. Clearing the codes will also reset the self tests.
