This is off topic but…you are one of my favorite guitarists overall, and, at 71 years old I have heard many. Your fluidity and melodic sensibility is “up there” with some of the greats.
1st off, I am always blown away by your chord voicings! Something I just need to study you for. Great pedal too. But man, these simple triads and diads? that you put together to create this insane beauty. Mesmerizing every time. I must learn this. Because the music is in my mind, but translating it is not possible. 💛
Agreed, Reverb is an awesome effect, and Plate is my favorite. A very close 2nd for me is Overdrive/Distortion, and then Delay. It's great that so many different Effects have become affordable with the advent of Modelers.
I'm a Boss RV-500 fan. Love the delays in addition to the reverbs. I created a kind of 'trashy slap' using a spring with some pre-delay - one of my favorites.
Reverb is my favourite effect as well, and the Empress is my favourite reverb. Particularly the ghost modes. You also have got to play around with the reverse modes with full wet, no dry. Amazing stuff.
Yeah reverb gives a sound an authenticity as a three dimensional event in time and space, rather than a flat line-drawing of a representation of something that is or was real at some other space and time. Also I have to agree with another comment, that ,since I'll be 70 this July and have been playing electric guitar and acoustic since the age of ten ( having taught myself chord progressions of popular radio songs on ukulele since the age of eight)... I also think the way you play is close to what I would do if I could... (I should be better than I am considering how long I've been playing, but obviously I'm a slow learner, and a but lazy, but your frequent posts always inspire me with the purity of your musical sense... keep it up... we need this in our sometimes drab musical lives)
Great pedal, killer playing. Love the Spring reverb! I have to say my favorite reverb pedal is Seymour Duncan silver Lake. Over the last year I had a few reverb pedals come and go and the silver lake has stayed strong.
The JRAD Mr. Moto made me keep my amp. Fixed my major problems with it. Very nice “spring” reverb with a very flexible tremolo. Sort of a bread and butter affair but it sounds great and is the foundation of everything I do.
Great timing with this video, John! I always preferring using delays to add space with my own music but I'll be working on a project where reverb seems like a more appropriate effect. Hearing how you approach the different styles was super helpful.
As a youth my favs were DS and FL but as of now reverb and phaser (the latter with fuzz or vibrato/tremolo). Tape echo (Boss RE-20) is my fav pedal (echo + reverb) but Jet Phaser (fuzz + phaser) might become my fav as well 😂
I'm with you on reverb being number one favorite effect. Delay and reverb are a close second and third. Favorite reverb effects are Earthquaker devices Ghost Echo, Lush Plate in the Quad Cortex, and the reverb on the Earthquaker Devices Dispatch Master with or without the delay added in. The Empress sounds fantastic, BTW. Great video and playing, John.
It's great that Reverb is your number one, but also really close to it in third place you have Reverb as a favorite! Great variety! Eheh, just a jk my friend. cheers
The only problem is the Cloudburst does not allow presets like the Blue/big sky or this unit does. A gigging situation would need presets for quick use.
Bricasti M7, not cheap, but hands down the best reverb I’ve ever used for guitar. I also do quite a bit of work recording chamber music, so it’s been a valuable professional tool for album production.
QUESTION: Which bank do I have to rob in order to have the £4,000 + needed to buy one of these? And I thought the Empress Reverb was expensive at a mere £500...
@@timelwell7002 LOL! Agreed, and I'm not sure which one, but look for the weakest security. It was an investment, for sure, but has long since paid for itself on professional projects, so well worth it. It just sound so glorious and makes the clients happy every time I kick it on.
Great vid - John do you track with reverb while recording? I love plate reverb/delay when I'm jamming through an amp or through my Pod Go, but everything I've heard recommends tracking guitars dry. I was just curious how you get your recordings to sound so well mixed!
Have you ever gotten the chance to try a GFI specular tempus? I've really wanted to hear that with a lonestar. Never gotten the chance to play with the specular tempus though
Nutz John you did not do LOFI, those are usually quite nice. And what in the world is BEER?? for when your crowd is to drunk to know the difference?? I once had to tell a great guitarist friend and his band to shut down ALL their ambient type effects/specifically Reverb, right after their opening song. The Room they were in High ceilings, and very Narrow, the stage was on one end corner, elevated, they probably heard their own sound coming off the back walls as an echo to them. He did shut the reverb down and He even could tell a difference from the Stage. That was just an unreal situation. All these work great in Recording smallish situations, but sometimes in a real world situation might get totally lost. Those effects like the Ghost/ambient swell/lofi well that is your Venus Isle backround stuff that STeve Barber did on synths for Eric, and or Eric was at that time experimenting with Synth Guitar stuff. But these NEW REVERBS have that built in to some degree.
I can't listen to spring reverb. People seem to get all gooey about it but to me it always sounds like utter crap. There are so many beautiful reverb sounds at your fingertips these days, you don't have to just make do with the spring reverb that's built in to your amp.
This is off topic but…you are one of my favorite guitarists overall, and, at 71 years old I have heard many. Your fluidity and melodic sensibility is “up there” with some of the greats.
☝️👍💯 At 47, I couldn’t agree more!
I totally agree and I'm almost 71.
I agree and I’m 63 - got a nice rhyme in here 😅
At 32 I like it too.
@@chrismillett Well done! 👏🏼
I was hoping we'd get to hear the "beer" reverb.
I 'm with you, Reverb is my favorite without doubt and delay is a strong second. Both together sound best if mixed properly.
I love reverb but I'm extremely partial to tremolo. Hence the trem in my screen name.
Wow, that is the perfect reverb pedal.

Agreed, Reverb is an awesome effect, and Plate is my favorite. A very close 2nd for me is Overdrive/Distortion, and then Delay. It's great that so many different Effects have become affordable with the advent of Modelers.
Agreed. I own a wampler ethereal (delay and reverb) and i never turn it off
I'm a Boss RV-500 fan. Love the delays in addition to the reverbs. I created a kind of 'trashy slap' using a spring with some pre-delay - one of my favorites.
Wow! Great track! Agreed, nothing inspires and changes the player experience quite like an amazing reverb.
Reverb is my favourite effect as well, and the Empress is my favourite reverb. Particularly the ghost modes. You also have got to play around with the reverse modes with full wet, no dry. Amazing stuff.
Gorgeous opening jam

empress are an underated company. they are one of the few to offer a compression pedal with sidechain input.
Yessss. REVERB is my Favorite too.
Great timing with this video, John! I always preferring using delays to add space with my own music but I'll be working on a project where reverb seems like a more appropriate effect. Hearing how you approach the different styles was super helpful.
The Empress reverb is my favourite (dedicated) reverb pedal. I prefer the AxeFX though. Another honourable mention is the Meris Mercury7.
I really like both reverb and delay so I use the Source Audio Collider. Both in one pedal. It sounds awesome.
Big Sky sounds great on so many of its patches. The only reverb that I've purchased, and I have no desire to look elsewhere.
Big sky for sure is goated. Ive gotta say the shimmer in the bigsky outdoes the empress, while empress excels in its standard reverbs
The lick at 10:32🤩
I still have a 'Holiest Grail' Stereo Reverb by EHX. It's fun, with the faders and an input gain control. They should bring it back. It's MIDI too.

Reverb+Delay for me. ❤❤❤
The new Strymon Cloudburst is the bomb! Combined with the Helix it gives you all the reverb you'll ever need.
The only problem is the Cloudburst does not allow presets like the Blue/big sky or this unit does. A gigging situation would need presets for quick use.
@@ksharpe10 That’s why I pair it with my Helix and use MIDI & the Helix Snapshots to change the Cloudburst settings.
@@ptortland So the Helix acts as the Midi controller?
@@ksharpe10 absolutely.
Man I love your playing! If I was allowed to only have one pedal it would be a delay. I am never getting rid of my Strymon Timeline.

dispatch master is my favorite pedal for reverb
It would be awesome to see a “ghost” reverb preset for the stomp if that’s possible, super unique tones

would you please share the dry signal of the second part (beginning at about 5min) so that we can compare with our own reverbs?
Spring reverb plus delay with Strymon Volante.
I really do have to agree. I went to a guitar store to try some stuff out and was playing through a dry amp and I absolutely hated it
Delay for me and they go hand in hand. I like delays that give a good verb effect.
A dry guitar is like eating stale bread. Some moisture makes everything better!
Delay does it for me more than reverb. But reverb is always good😊
From what I can tell I like the Helix reverbs a lot more than this thing. I wish it had a reverse reverb, though.
Have you ever gotten the chance to try a GFI specular tempus? I've really wanted to hear that with a lonestar. Never gotten the chance to play with the specular tempus though
After watching this, I'm gonna get drunk and mess with my BigSky and HX Stomp paired up together. Good tone hunting boys!
how much is it and where do I get one, and do you have a code :) Probably not available down here....
Source Audio make some great reverbs
I just can't play without at least a touch of reverb or in some cases , delay
