I have traveled with over 100 people in the last month as a part of my work as a travel consultant. No delay & bad experiences so far, they loved the food and crew hospitality.
My family and I just flew SriLankan from Bangkok to Columbo last month. Yes I had seen the terrible reviews and talk of safety issues but decided to take them anyways. We were taking 10 one way flights around the world over the month of July and this was the flight that I was most nervous about. However, it turned out to be one of the best flight experiences of our trip which included carriers like Japan airlines and Emirates. The plane was in great condition, left on time, the crew was very friendly, and the meal was maybe the best of our entire trip. Also we were able to fly direct 3 hours from BKK to CMB without having to connect through KUL like most of the other budget type options I looked into required. So glad I flew on this airline and will never forget the experience. I really hope they make it and wish the best for Sri Lanka an amazing country we will never forget.
I totally agree with you 👍 Hope that the management of Sri Lankan Airlines will see this and take appropriate steps . Thank you Josh for the good work ❤
First of all, it's great to see you on again on You Tube. It's really important for everyone to take a time out once in a while. Thank you so much for the insights of Sri Lankan Airlines. As a former employee in the Airline Industry, it always hurts me, when greedy and corruptive Manager turning an Airline in to a mess. Hopefully Sri Lankan finds a new Buyer who understands the Airline Business and is able to fix these huge problems.
It would be impossible unless the airline was privatized or Government of Sri Lanka is being kept away from intervening with any of the airline's affairs as that is the reason why Emirates prefer to exit it's agreement with Sri Lankan as the government keeps giving difficult path for Emirates in trying to reformed the airline
Sri Lankan airlines definitely needs to be privatized however , one thing I can say is safety will be their number one priority. They never let a plane take off without being in perfect condition not even with a minor fault that has a 1% chance of going bad. Additionally the pilots even tho they might be overworked will be great as they are highly trained in Sri Lanka and we use traditional methods and don’t rely on technology too much. Other than that the airline should be given to a third party asap or things will get worse , on the other hand on certain routes they do offer the best prices .
It already is privatized. The country is full of idiots and crook politicians. Its actually worse than Africa. Some genuinely dont know that because of sheer ignorance and the rest dont give 2 cents worth shit. So its already dead. They just dont know that.
@@kingsleyperera9655 You should ask the Brits how they feel about their privatised rail system or the Americans about their privatised healthcare systems. Stop believing that 'Privatisation = Excellence'. Most of the times it isn't.
They once unloaded all their business class passengers at the last minute because a minister wanted that flight for himself and his entourage. Such a shame for a country that has so much potential.
I flew with AirFrance/KLM and British Airways on my recent trip. Both encounter delays, bad onboard service, and old planes. I think this is the new normal for many airlines.
This happens with every airline. I have travelled with Sri Lankan airlines so many times but have never experienced any delays. But I have experienced delays in Singapore airlines. Calling this a dangerous state is too much because unlike other airelines, safety is their main priority that they won't take off if there's even a small possiblity of bad experience. When it comes to safety, I would 100% trust this airline. Yes the service is not good as before and aircrafts are old but I'm pretty confident about Sri Lankan airline's safety.
Flew with them a few years ago before Sri Lanka's current troubles; was a good experience. Very sad to hear this. One of the most beautiful countries I've ever been to
I recently flew Sri Lankan from Kuwait to Colombo in the A330-200 economy class, then continued to Jakarta in the A330-300 business class. The crew on both flights were amazing, but both flights were delayed by an average of 2 hours. I sincerely hope that the airline can find a way to acquire newer aircraft, because they actually have a very good soft product.
Thanks, Josh. Aircraft breakdowns are not necessarily related to age. It has more to do with failure to comply with the maintenance procedures manual. There are several airlines around the world operating aircraft that are older than 15 years, but the same are airworthy. I do not have proof that Sri Lankan aircraft are not airworthy. Delaying a flight because of a tire change does not mean the aircraft is not airworthy. However, if it is, then it is not only an issue with the airline. It is a failure of the oversight function by Sri Lanka's CAA!.
I have been flying with the airline for 2 years at least 4 flights a year and I have never had a n issue. Planes always clean, and on time, staff always very friendly and food always good. Never a bad experience.
Just did a quick look at Air Lanka international flights in the air currently. Average age of long haul aircraft is about 8 years, not new but not excessive age.
I flew from Colombo to Jakarta with Sri Lankan 3 weeks ago. Literally as soon as the engines started on our a330-300 (one of the newest planes in Sri Lankans fleet) I could tell something was wrong. The whole plane was shaking and pitching like we were in turbulence and we were literally not even moving yet. We had to pull off to a remote gate. 4 hours and two movies later, they had fixed the issue and we took off and continued to Jakarta without incident. I'm just grateful we made it safely. Edited to add...nice hair, Josh! Liking the new look.
I flew Sri Lankan airlines recently and seems like they have improved from what you are saying here. There was no delay or technical fault and the staff and service were amazing. Lets hope they keep this good performance up for a long time.
Thank you for doing the dirty work for us dear Cahill!! Thanks we are also frequent flyers and there’s literally nobody that’s telling the story like you do. Keep doing the best job 😊
I love flying them very much even as an Austrian citizen it is not easy to fly with them. Thanks God that I never experienced long delays. Specially the Business Class product was always very nice. So let's pray that UL will have less problems and safe flights in the future. I will fly them again end of August. The food is always amazing at UL
I’m a platinum member and with good reason, nothing you say is acceptable as we all know the difficulties SriLankan has been facing last 20 years, their inflight service product long haul has got better Average of Thaiairways equipment is almost same
When the country is declining, the national airline can't do different. Sri Lanka is not the place where you will transit, so the airline will provide their services to the people who are actually traveling to/from the island. Covid restrictions, economic collapse of the country as well the bad management are main reason why the company is in such state. In most of the cases, once the company touch the bottom it's very difficult to go back. Or some bigger airline will buy them, or they will slowly suffer and die at the end.
I flew them from Colombo to HKG many years ago and they were great. So sad to hear about their troubles and thanks for the heads up. As for your refund, can u not reach out to IATA and complain?
Thank you for telling the truth Josh. Sri Lankan politicians must hear these words as you correctly said, without rubbing their shoulders with each other.
Just flew Sri Lankan airlines two weeks ago....Colombo to LHR. No issues. No delays. You can tell that the plane was definitely outdated. Perhaps the airline should be given back to Emirates to manage.
I have missed you and pleased that you are back. In my opinion you are the best airline vlogger and your videos are always well balanced and creative. I have always enjoyed Sri Lanka and its such a shame about Sri Lankan Airlines which used to be quite good. Always liked their cabin staff. Take care from the UK.
I agree with you josh, sri lankan needs to be grounded, at least until the restructuring process is done. I flew to Singapore and back exactly 2 months ago, in business class, seat 3A. The seat's remote control (for the IFE system) was stuck in, with a few papers on and around the seat as well. At colombo, the plane was on the ground for an extra 30 mins while a team of engineers opened up the left engine for some "fixing up". Ah, also, the airplane, an A330 (I can not remember the registration) had just arrived from chennai, so back to back flying the whole day. Edit, an A330-300
One almost feels that you were disappointed when your baggage didn't go missing and when the flight itself was uneventful with no technical problems in flight, after it took off following the delay mentioned. Your story would have been complete if one of these had happened. Hopefully this airline could regain its past glory solving the current problems which lead to customer dissatisfaction from time to time. It is also good to see some positive comments regarding the airline, suggesting all is not lost. This airline will not be grounded anytime soon. Let us wish for its recovery, ensuring better service and customer satisfaction.
Hi Josh Thank you for another great video. I think that despite rightfully highlighting the significant problems of the airline, it would have perhaps been appropriate to be even more complimentary about the staff. Something like: “despite lack of budget, lack of resources and low morale, they identified the technical difficulties and ensured we flew safely. And the cabin crew even managed to smile”. Just saying’. I hope the airline manages to become excellent again! Nick.
Thanks for sharing. I noticed Yotel been expanding. That said, not cheap even for Yotel. My spouse just was in sinapore last month. Stayed at hotel close by to Airport much cheaper, granted not in the Jewel. that said, i do hope best for workers of Srilankan airlines. I hope airline improves.
Hej Josh! Really love your blond look! Every company, weather in the air or on ground, needs someone outside to view what they are doing! I really love your style of viewing the airlines, tough love but honest reviews! Keep up your job and happy travels!!
SriLankan Airlines also operates flights from Colombo to Paris and then to Frankfurt. This flight is always at least 2 Hours late. Im a little sorry for them but they made too many easy mistakes like ordering no planes ir false route planing
Flew with them on January. A short flight from Sri Lanka to Maldives. Had no delays, no technical problems. Packed flight. No service. Only a coke as we we’re flying business. Completely outdated planes.
I totally agree with what you are saying. Keep up these videos, and hats off to you for risking your life by flying with these dangerous airlines. You are really underrated, and I wish the best for you!
You know as a sri lankan this is really sad to hear especially from you as i know that you love this airline, but I 101%agree with what u are saying it's not safe to fly sri lankan airlines anymore, I think that this airline should be given to some rich dude and i say that it should be a private air line Edit: Hi josh could you pin this comment
I hopp pop e the Sri Lankin Airlines improves quickly. Losing staff is scary, their financial insecurity is also very concerning. Sri Lanka and it’s people are so beautiful, this is so sad to see. I hope they can improve quickly.
Have been a traveller through sri lankan airlines, since last year. The sudden degradation in its quality since the beginning of this year (in my observation) is alarming! Trust me, I really loved the airlines last year (not sure whether the current issues existed even back then).
Very sad state of affairs to note all this. But you are right. Our politicians have ruined our national carrier beyond repair !!!Thank you for your honest review of the air line.
A few weeks ago my pre-ordered item was not delivered. I raised a complaint and was docked 2K miles to get the miles refunded. I lost my tier miles in the bargain. Now is the interesting part. I recently had a mail from their Customer service department informing that they could not locate me!! I was in seat 1C on an A 320. The least they could've done is to have made an announcement. That's how bad they have fallen, but though the service remains cheerful, involved and very good.. the quality of food, delays etc. is beginning to take a toll. I will be using them one last time in the next few weeks.. and lets see. Happy to provide more details/information on request.
This reminds me of the time I flew Aerolineas Argentinas from Bogota to Buenos Aires in 2019. My flight was on a Boeing 737-700. It closed its doors and failed to push back from the gates. It took 3 hours before they could fix the problem and pull back from the gate, and the cabin became quite hot during that period.
Another honest review!!! really sad to hear this but its the bitter truth! Hope soon something good happens to the airline! if it werent to the politicians sri lankan would have been upto the standards of the big airlines what it actually was back before 2008!! Hope the relevant authorities see this video and wake up and do actions to save the airline!!! Thx Josh!!! #SaveSriLankanAirlines #WeWantBackSriLankanAirlines #WWBSA
Love your work! All seem like honest reviews, not staged. Keep up the unbiased work. As a SriLankan its a difficult to watch this video, but you cannot change the truth. Still good stuff with the video. But I suggest you to try it again and see if anything has changed at all. I believe a lot has changed since your last flight. Please. I am sure a good review(if it is actually) is something the flag carrier can use. Cheers!
Indeed, I remember you being detained in China a few years back, could not have been a nice experience, better luck this trip 👍 You deserved a few moths off Josh, the body and mind can only do so much before feeling bad and run down. One positive point, the food looked excellent and was presented well 🧑🍳🧑🍳
I've never been on Sri Lankan Airlines. But did fly on Air Lanka back in 1993- lol almost 30 years now. But Air Lanka was a good experience. Great pudding. Children's coloring book. The plane was an Airbus 320 both ways.
If the plane was 14 years old what about United flying into EDI today? A 28 yr old 757. Yesterday’s 29 yrs old 757. Or yesterday into EDI a 26 yr old Delta 767. Now they are OLD so what’s the difference Josh? Have you tried either?
good to have you back; we kept saying where is josh, so glad you had a well earned break and great to see this very informative video; not intending to fly with sri lankan at the mo, but thanks for the warning
I mean its no surprise considering the sate of Srilanka. They're basically running out of money, this airline can go bankrupt anytime soon. Edit: Srilanka airlines is also running low on aircraft that you briefly talked about, they recently grounded almost all of their A320 neos due to maintaince and supply chain issues, so prepare for even more delays.
I live in England, and every year travel between London and Colombo, so does many of my family. Mainly for cost reasons we occasionally use Qatar, even they have delays, missed connections, twice our bags didn't made to the final destination with us (but reunited later), few times my screen didn't work! For over 20 years I used Sri Lankan and each time I experienced excellent service. I admit Sri Lankan airlines does same problems as mention above, however all the pilots, cabin and ground crew does an excellent job to look after you and take you to your destination. All of the problems are caused mismanagement and interference from every government Sri Lanka had for last 30-40 years, for example appointing family members to senior management positions with no experience of airline industry, as well as corruption. To say Sri Lankan is unsafe is so far from the truth... please do your own research, Google 'list of airlines banned in the European Union' and 'least reliable airlines in the world' and make up your mind! I am not sure of the professional qualification of this content creator, but looking at the titles of all his videos has the same theme, over dramatization, perhaps that's how one get more views!
One of the items that have no cycle limit but are checked after each landing are the tires. You can have an issue with Sri Lankan have a limited fleet, so they are not able to swap planes when having a tech issue at home base, but you really should not complain that they change a tire, that fail the after landing "arrival check". If it took an hour it was not a fast change of tire but not very slow either. There are a lot of specs that the tire have to be within and you do not want to change it, if its within the specs, that have a safety margin in them. If it only were the tire, it would most likely have taken longer to swap planes, since catering, baggage etc also have to be relocated. Can we agree, that you can have a plane on its maiden flight and it still will need a tire change, if it gets a crack by landing on a small stone etc? I come here because I like your straight forward reviews, but you WANT an airline to change the tire if outside specs. What you do not want are the airline maintenance staff that says "we will change it when convenient for us", not when minimum specs are identified as reached. Regarding the "wing issue". Maybe it had some potential fuel leak that were first visible after fuelling since you cannot identify a leak when tanks are empty. From the very sparse photage of the maintenance crew it seemed to me, they made a dye check to identify if they had a problem, that needed immediate attention. If their conclusion had been "yes" that plane would not have taken of. It are fine if you have a negative beforehand view, after a string of bad experiences, personally or by mouth to ear, but in this case you maybe should consider the angle that "despite Sri Lankan Air are in some financial trouble they do not cut corners maintenance wise", at least on this flight. Just saying. Its always inconvenient when your plane do not depart on time but in this case you should recognise that tires are "equal for all" airlines and can happen to a brandnew tire as well. Fuel leaks can come at anytime and some are much more serious than others. Maintenance HAVE to identify what, if any, category this are in. Had it been outside specs you would not have departed on that plane. It made sense they did the check. Had they again just decided to swap planes it probably would have taken longer time before your departure. So 2 unrelated things that can happen anywhere IMO. (Edit: Ohh yes. One more thing. Eat your veggies John! Its good for you, not least when being exposed to flying often, that dehydrates you and fatigue your body)
Thank you for a nice flight review as a flight reviewer. But as an aviation journalist definitely needs to update your journalism skills. Sri Lankan government has already released plans to privatise UL one month before your video. However, what you can do is to give concrete examples of what to do and what not to do as an airline, i believe that's your strength. You can advise them on fleet strategy, what business they should involve in, etc. I think given the competition they're facing (SIA, ME3, etc), this airline has to excel in at least some areas in order to survive, for example, the number of connections, fleet composition (whether they get newer fleets? less likely), super attractive reward programmes, or a robust cargo business. Well i believe that's left for you to discuss with the industry professionals.
Hey Josh why dont you buy it. This would be a great challenge . First time ever in TH-cam history 😀😀. I ve been saying it since 2007 they should have invested on few wide bodies way back then for our long haul's. Problem with airbuses 310-340 s, they are great for short hops not for long trips. Should have had 777 , A350 ,787. We live in uk we love to fly with srilankan for their service (great staff)and hospitality second to non, but the hardware is pretty bad !!!!!!!! So Josh why dont you team up with some investors or airlines enter into new world of airline ownership 😉😉 become a CEO . I know you will say , I dont know nothing about running a airline but at this stage who is ??? A bold challenge. Or at least you could do a video of.... how to buy a failing airline 😀😀 ✈✈
WOW - I was suggested this vid. Then on you tube a suggestion came up about your trip to NUUK and then the delivery flight of the A 330. I can not say anything better than It felt as if I was watching one of those " I am on a mission and nothing is going to stop me" It was so WELL done and the editing was suberb- I never knew about Greenland and it is so great to learn how people live in other parts of the world. I just subscribed and I look forward to your up coming videos. Great JOB!! In terms of this video - that is what happens when ANY government gets involved -
I worked for Amtrak for 32 years (on board) and my biggest problem was the equipment. Glad you're back..It's too bad the crews have to put up with all of that.
Sri Lankan airlines have always given priority for passenger safety. I have traveled all my life and I never had an issues! Yes, there are fewer aircrafts and this is due to shortage of spareparts from airbus so they try their best to manage with existing aircraft’s!
The Jaffna airport runway should be extended to the length of BIA or even more. Extension of Jaffna airport runway will bring in international flights from East and West. This competition will improve Sri Lankan airline.
VCBI has about 200 movements a day compared VCCJ. Jaffna does not have the infrastructure to support large scale aircraft\crew\passenger movements. If investors can be convinced that this can be a lucrative, the project is so large we can only dream.
Getting this airline profitable again will be tough. Change starts at the top and they need a change in leadership. As you said they are corrupt and only want to line their pockets. Glad you had some down time. That's an example of retirement minus getting drunk. Glad you are back and safe travels.

Thank you Sir! You put it together beautifully! ❤
thank you for trusting sri lanka
I totally agree with you 👍 Hope that the management of Sri Lankan Airlines will see this and take appropriate steps . Thank you Josh for the good work ❤
Most probably they'll complain to TH-cam and get this video removed! Lol
@@fibreglass9976 That's the well known solution for problems in Sri Lanka.. MASK THE TRUTH & REMOVE THE EVIDENCE!
Makes you wonder what management is paid to do!
Even SL RAILWAY too should be privatized for efficient punctual services !!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂 And you must be jealous
Srilankan A333s are ~8 years old
@@lankanwthunder Were they acquired new?
❤
Why would you fly on an airline that you genuinely believe to be unsafe?
Also, your self care comments are so worth paying attention to.I am learning this and practicing it myself
Fake overrated comment 😂😂😂😂
May be he is from airbus. 🤣🤣🤣
You are just over acting there are short comings due to the corruption of the politicians. Its was one time one of the best Air line .
Good to see you back. I completely understand where you’re coming from mental health is so important and we need to take time out when you need.
I had a London/Colombo/London flight in May, everything was cool. No issues
I’m a platinum member and with good reason, nothing you say is acceptable as we all know the difficulties SriLankan has been facing last 20 years, their inflight service product long haul has got better
Average of Thaiairways equipment is almost same
When the country is declining, the national airline can't do different.
Back in the days.... This was a wonderful airliner. A shame the decay can't be stopped.
Thanks for helping to keep the flying public safe! Great Work!
Edit, an A330-300
Love the hair. Good to see you back and you are so right, you need to look after yourself.
“Just one small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day.” ❤ welcome back😊
One almost feels that you were disappointed when your baggage didn't go missing and when the flight itself was uneventful with no technical problems in flight, after it took off following the delay mentioned.
Hi Josh
Thank you for another great video. Nick.
Great advice!
You probably didn’t watch the entire video cos he did. Twice.
Just having "never mind" Noel to watch didn't cut it these last weeks. Glad you made it back into the skies.
Fabulous report honest and constructive! I like the new hair style too Josh 😃
flew to the maldives with sri lanken air recently had no issues but the planes looked very old
I stayed in Yotel not long ago and it was a very long walk from Changi Airport 😀😀 and I went in circles since I’ve never been to Jewel before.
My wife and I flew Sri Lankan Airlines Business Class from SYD to LHR and the flight and service was great. Excellent value!
Such a shame to see a airline not go well. Good to see you take some time off and relax
That too the airlines which did well in the past!
OMG with the new hair look Josh looks like Jeff Brazier , an English presenter . Doppelgänger
I totally agree with what you are saying. Keep up these videos, and hats off to you for risking your life by flying with these dangerous airlines. You are really underrated, and I wish the best for you!
You know as a sri lankan this is really sad to hear especially from you as i know that you love this airline, but I 101%agree with what u are saying it's not safe to fly sri lankan airlines anymore, I think that this airline should be given to some rich dude and i say that it should be a private air line
Edit: Hi josh could you pin this comment
Just like how Air India is finally getting better after they returned it to Tata.
Have you flown with Sri Lankan Airline ??
@@KEVIN-xd6qg yea why
I hopp pop e the Sri Lankin Airlines improves quickly. Losing staff is scary, their financial insecurity is also very concerning. Sri Lanka and it’s people are so beautiful, this is so sad to see. I hope they can improve quickly.
Have been a traveller through sri lankan airlines, since last year. The sudden degradation in its quality since the beginning of this year (in my observation) is alarming! Trust me, I really loved the airlines last year (not sure whether the current issues existed even back then).
Glad you’re back Josh, we’ve missed you!!!!
That's a shame. Sri Lanka was my first foreign country and my first airline...
Sri Lankan politics screwed this airline. Total mismanagement.

As a Sri Lankan, this is the bitter truth yet agree with you 200% mate 😢
You must be an Indian , Sri Lanka is thousands time better than India
Thx Josh!!!

Agree.... Pls the authorities should privatize to bring back the good old Sri Lankan Airlines
Cheers!
This is what happens when politicians hold a nation hostage instead of serving it. Soon to happen in Pakistan.
PIA is nearly bankrupt!!
An eye opening video.
Hope things will change before some disaster happened.
Indeed, I remember you being detained in China a few years back, could not have been a nice experience, better luck this trip 👍
You deserved a few moths off Josh, the body and mind can only do so much before feeling bad and run down.
Great message about social media dividing people. Most people would get along with others face to face. Happy travels
If the plane was 14 years old what about United flying into EDI today? A 28 yr old 757. Yesterday’s 29 yrs old 757.
Or yesterday into EDI a 26 yr old Delta 767.
Now they are OLD so what’s the difference Josh? Have you tried either?
Isnt there a order on 5-10 a330’s and a320s on order tho?? Saw it on articles
good to have you back; we kept saying where is josh, so glad you had a well earned break and great to see this very informative video; not intending to fly with sri lankan at the mo, but thanks for the warning
Let’s all just take a second to appreciate Josh’s new hair colour😅
Glad to see you back Josh, and you can take us with you on your journey true the World !! Thanks for sharing this flight !!
Where are those who looted the country ? Sri Lankan Airlines used to be one of my favorite Airlines. Such a shame😢
There’s no such thing😂😂 you guys are exaggerating things 😂😂
No stupid and boring first and business class reviews for Josh, I love his content and its really informative for normal people...
Yes! Recently there was a 30 hour delay in Melbourne due to a technical issue. Please privatise the airline without conditions.
As a sri lankan my heart is broken💔 when i grow up im buying this air line and developing this✈️💵🫷
I live in England, and every year travel between London and Colombo, so does many of my family.
So much criticism... I would never fly on such a plane if I had your doubts.
3:51 I truly agree. Thank you for the reminder Josh. Taking care of oneself is the top 1 priority of every human being.
Or at least you could do a video of.... how to buy a failing airline 😀😀

Fantastic review and content Josh !
How did you NOT expect them to be falling apart when their economy, political and social scene is in the midst of a free fall?
Thanks for your honest comments Josh. Blessings
Getting this airline profitable again will be tough. Change starts at the top and they need a change in leadership. As you said they are corrupt and only want to line their pockets. Glad you had some down time. That's an example of retirement minus getting drunk. Glad you are back and safe travels.
Respect your honest review. Tell it like it is. Welcome back.
