Good thing to mention - choosing your DAW and sticking to it is a big part of it. I'm not sure if Cubase has the fastest workflow but I've been using it forever so for me I know how everything works. Likely the learning curve for a new user is bigger. I think right now Cubase has many functions that I will never use slowing down the workflow. I've created a few shortcuts of my own but in general I use the stock shortcuts so I can work just as fast when using Cubase somewhere else. -Mikko
I take a similar approach when song writing. I go drum then generic bass and scratch guitar. Then I refine the bass. Then when the parts are hashed out I record final bass and guitar .
This is a great way to build a song. Back in the old days when songs were written with a band in a rehearsal space you'd get to hear what everyone else was doing and you'd adjust what you're doing to fit each other. Now that songs are many times written alone it's important to think about what the other instruments are doing and sort of write those parts at the same time.
Always something to keep in mind when you're going into the songwriting session. Sometimes it can be good to get the banger riff recorded, then flesh out the rest of the song with catchy drum beats and fill in the gaps from there. Ultimately we can't tell you how your brain works and what order works best for you, but we can show you our methods and hope you pick something up from it! -Kai
