How To Remove A Tripod From 360 Photos In Photoshop

  • UPDATE: If you're using Photoshop CC, I've made an updated tutorial here: • My Raw Editing Workflo... that is non-destructive.
    Just a quick video to show you how I remove the tripod from my Insta360 One X photos.
    Though the Insta360 Studio bit at the beginning is exclusive to Insta360 files, this technique will work with any rectilinear 360 image that you need to remove a tripod from.

  • @naturallypeacefulvideo

    This has been very helpful. Thank You! I believe the distorting to and from polar coordinates does degrade the quality of the image somewhat. I get around this by masking out most of the new layer to allow the original background layer to show through...

    • @drewcain
      @drewcain  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s exactly what I’m doing now as well, but I’m also creating the mask before I unwind it so I have a perfectly matching mask for my change which minimizes the minor detail loss to just where the edit was done. I’m planning an updated version of this vid to show those little tricks. Thanks for the comment!!

    I am wondering, It's just me or when you do that I lose sharpness. Compare with the copy layer. I clearly see this action creates destructive micro distortions. and lose in detail. Or it's just me?

    • @drewcain
      @drewcain  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's not just you. The wrapping and unwrapping process is technically re-rendering your image and as is typical with massive transformations, small degredations can and do occur. To mitigate this, I recommend duplicating your image, running the action on the top copy then adding a layer mask to restore everything but where you removed your tripod. This way the bulk of your image remains unchanged. It's an extra step, but if you're seeing visible losses in sharpness it's worth the extra minute of work. Hope that helps.

      Hey Tom, I don’t actually know as I don’t use GoPro Player. It’s possible that when you re-save the file the original meta data is overwritten and GoPro player isn’t recognizing it as a GoPro 360 image. Outside of that guess I have no idea ;) ... Sorry I’m not more help.

    • @drewcain

      That’s a tough question to answer, but mostly because the 360 work we do is often folded into a bigger photo or video wrapper and is never the primary point of our client work. I highly recommend checking out Ben Claremont’s channel. As far as I’m concerned he puts out some of the best 360 tutorial content on TH-cam and I’m sure he’s got a far better idea about pricing 360 packages specifically. thanks for this beautiful tutorial, but to save the photo in 360 degrees what should you do??? Photoshop exports the photo in JPEG format in a simple panoramic photo and not in 360 degrees.

    • @drewcain
      @drewcain  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The final rectangular file IS what you want to save out as .jpg for 360 use. The wrapping and 360 functionality of the image is actually handled by the program you will be inputting the file into not the by the file itself. For example, if you load it into a VR Headset or Facebook 360 or a virtual tour website, those applications will automatically wrap your image into a 360 sphere from the rectangular .jpg you upload.

    • @drewcain

      Great question! Because not everyone is using a current version of Photoshop (and Panorama Layers are a fairly recent feature - 2018ish) and the question that prompted this video was from a CS6 user so I wanted to make sure they'd be able to follow along. Thanks for mentioning Pano Layers though -- I'm working on a video about the new Insta360 One X2 and I'll be sure to include a section them there.

    • @drewcain
      @drewcain  หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you're working in Photoshop, there's no reason you can't save this as a .jpg. If you're not seeing that option in your Save dialog try the keyboard shortcut Command - Option - S (Cmd - Alt - S on PC). Adding the Option/Alt to the shortcut will give you more format options including .jpg. You could also use the "Save for Web" function, which is hidden now for some reason, but that shortcut is Command - Option - Shift - S (Cmd - Alt - Shift - S on PC I think). And from there you can choose the JPG High preset. Hope that helps.

    Great way to edit, but the end result after distorting the pano is hurting the sharpness of the picture, I don´t see that happening to you

    • @drewcain
      @drewcain  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Damian, it's possible that with certain images you'll loose just a tiny bit of sharpness (I don't think they ever meant the Polar Coordinates filter to be used this way). If you find you're loosing detail try duplicating your layer first, running the tripod removal process on the top copy, then add a black mask and using a white soft brush on the mask add back just the areas that you need to remove the tripod from. For most images this extra step should work perfectly and usually when the tripod is on the floor or carpet, nobody's going to notice a loss of sharpness in just that tiny area.
      *NOTE: You'll probably want to select both layers first and use Edit > Auto Align Layers because it's common to get a slight shift in pixels (like 1px in one direction or the other) when wrapping and unwrapping an image with Polar Coordinates.
