Springstead Moonshine

Discover Meta "Cooky" Brandt stories of ingenious moonshine operations in the small community of Springstead, Wisconsin. The Reid and Burns families ran a covert and underground moonshine operation on the south side of Stone Lake. Trap doors in cabins gave access to tunnels that connected to stills and vats. To evade the authorities, moonshine production was combined with maple syrup manufacture on the same property. Ultimately, both the syrup and the hooch traveled to Chicago hotels in identical bottles with slightly different labels. As pharmacists assistant, Reid could move moonshine to pharmacies and using his lawyer connections Burns moved most of the product to hotels.
