ngl you are proably the only person to take into account we are people that dont just play warthunder. i started around the same time as you and for about a year i just tried to grind as much as i could which ended with me dropping the game for a year. but once i came back and just played for fun i started making real progress, and once covid started i just kept playing for fun and now the reached top tier
This is what it's all about man! People see this game as a modern plane simulator, but we have to remember, this game started as a WW2 plane game; you're meant to have fun at each rank you play at :)

I grinded for like 2-3 weeks and got to top teir I will never get bored of the game because I always wanted to play it but didn't have a PC or console now that I do I only play war thunder and very little bf or insurgency sandstorm

I crew every vehicle because I just wanna be able to switch between vehicles whenever I want and try out new things. It isnt really SL efficient tho lol
Best advice I would give for new players is to not spend the SL on crewing every new vehicle! For the longest time I thought I *had* to crew them in order to progress through the trees. You don’t. Only spend the money on crewing vehicles you actually want to use, otherwise you’re just throwing away SL.
Also, there are periods every year where the SL cost for buying and crewing new vehicles is discounted by 50%

For grinding I would recommend crewing every vehicle and spading them. The RP boost from spading vehicles is almost as valuable as the experience gained by playing a variety of vehicles.
But most importantly: It is almost certain that no player will find a top tier vehicle to be the most rewarding to play. Even if you're set on a goal of grinding, the finish line should be at a fun vehicle rather than arbitrarily the last one in a tech tree.
@@Kraus- I agree but also think that only makes sense up to like the 100,000 SL mark for the cost of crewing. After that, the extra time spent earning the RP and SL to unlock and purchase the modifications just becomes absurd.

Facts
The find your groove at 7:40 I feel is the most important in this guide, once you find a rithim to consistently get xp and sl every game you can get rather far. For example when I decided to finish off the US tree I used the a10 with 2 fox 2s and 2 extra guns. The idea behind that was to sit around the friendly base and kill the bombers after they drop there payload. Or flying something like a phantom with a talisman with bombs and fox 2s so once you drop your bombs you can kill planes, or just drop your bombs and fight when intercepted.

If you can go back in time to 2013 the game had a different progression system, which was way less grindy and you grinded tiers instead of individual planes (no tanks yet). There were 20 tiers so for example you reached tier 12 you might unlock a fighter, an attacker and a bomber all at once.
This is the non grinder way guide to grind which is fine for people that do not care about top tier at all, as a veteran of playing this game since 2013-14 but i mostly played the casual grind (so i didnt get to top tier since last year) i hate to say this but if you need that tomcat or f16 just buy a rank 6 or 7 premium plane itll get you to top tier in less than a month especially with premium time. But if you dont have money like most people that play this game you can get some rank 5 talisman on the war bond shop for free which can help with the grind or else itll take literal years to grind after tier 5. all in all great advice for the general public.
Indeed, agreed as well. If you're looking to get to top tier fast, it's pretty much necessary to get a premium account and a vehicle or maybe even a few vehicles. Talismans on non premium planes are also highly highly beneficial, all agreeable points! Thank you for the advice, and kind words :)
Also some advice for ground RB: learning the maps is a big aspect of getting better, since experienced players know all the "good spots" or where to push. My advice is to play around the same area on the map so u get used to it, and try to play on flanks as well.

Definitely agree with the focus on mindset over specific mechanics. The fastest way to grind is by not treating it like a grind, you can play the most underpowered vehicle tree in the game, but if you are interested in those vehicles and don't only think about how to get to the next ones you'll have a far, far easier time than playing vehicles you aren't interested in and are only taking out to grind with.
It always disheartens me so much when friends have picked the game up on promises of playing an F-16 or an Abrams (or some other top tier) and inevitably gotten burned out. Once you realise that playing a Mig-29 isn't as necessarily as fun as playing an I-16, you can actually start to enjoy the game for what it is.

Great Video! A bit of devils advocacy here. Player since 2013 with 6k hours. Be careful moving up the tech tree too fast. There are a lot of great vehicles in the tech tree and you should be spading a good hand full on your way up to round out your lineups and learn vehicles. The players that tend to move fast through the tech tree get confronted by us shameless sweatys at high/top tier and dont have the same understanding of mechanics that we do. As someone who has played all the tiers extensively "LOWER TIERS ARE MORE FUN". Also all premiums are meant to be undertiered so dont trick yourself into thinking your "ready" for your favorite tech tree vehicle that you've been grinding for as you may get bullied. TLDR Pace yourself there are a lot of aspects to this game if not you are just target practice! Keep on the videos glad to see you got some traction on this one!

for those who have been traumatized by top tier. visit arcade and realistic battles at low tier, best at reserve tier, and just watch the chaos unfold as new players figure the game out.
Very true lol! I don't really like to do this because I feel terrible slaughtering newer or less experienced players, but nonetheless flying above the chaos in a bomber is awesome.

For that I like to fly the He 100 D-1. Even when fully uptiered your top speed is nearly 100 kph higher than the second best plane.

Wonderful guide. This is my third period playing WT again and now that I'm playing it for fun, not really to grind, the game has been most enjoyable. If you don't have the money to drop on extra SL or GE, just play the game to have _fun_, and before you know it you'll pass tiers. I reached rank V in a month and a half. It also really helps grinding out one tree at a time. I know for sure that experience I'm gaining grinding out my USA tree will help some when I start my British rank II up grind. :) Good luck to all of you, and Nimbo, enjoy a well-deserved sub.

If you struggle with silver lions, don't buy the vehicles you investigate right away. Wait for specific dates such as Victory Day or Christmas to buy them at 50% off
Or get a uss moffet, with 300% booster + good game its an easy 200-300k, ive had games as high as 500k

@@svenvdv2880 not sure. Victory Day should be close, maybe before summer, but VD discounts only apply for the allies. Iirc there should be more discounts from mid to late summer and also in Christmas

8:21 I find it is also best to play with friends at the same level when doing so, it makes battle feel only a minute or to long, rather than the average 10-30 minute battle.
Good guide. Backups can be immensely useful on vehicles you perform well in or are classed as a premium vehicle- theoretically doubles you RP potential per match (aside from RB), assuming you average at least a 1:1 KDR (or assists/caps) with each spawn.
On the topic of fun, it's massively important to have a fallback option in game if you find yourself approaching burnout (but still wanting to stick with the game in the long haul). This is why I play naval- it's a good change of pace and outside of a select few BR brackets, it's not a sweat fest or SL sink. That fallback can be playing different vehicle types, using PVE modes (which also provide boosters), switching from Realistic to Arcade (or vice versa), playing a different nation, setting other goals for yourself (spading certain vehicles, getting better at CAS by playing at BR bracket where it's less punishing to learn).
Most importantly, a big part of having fun can come from playing with a friend or full squad. Find a squadron that's a fit for your personality, get to know some people, and starting squadding up. You'll learn a lot from the more experienced players, thus improving your own performance. You're likely to win more games, in turn getting more RP/SL. The squadron may not always play the same mode, vehicles, or battle ratings you're wanting to do, but it does change things up. Who knows, maybe you'll pivot to something you hadn't considered.
All great points! I definitely didn't go too in depth about having fun and probably could have without straying away from the main point of the video. However, I believe fun isn't really something that can be taught because everyone likes different things :) TY for the comment!
Honestly if you have a run of the mill hotas and decent pc specs I'd highly recommend dcs as you can pick up a Chinese mig 29 module for under 20 bucks as well as any other airframe that's modeled nearly one to one albeit for $80(given the high fidelity and fully interactive cockpit it's definitely worth the price of you like that sort of thing) it's a great simulator with a really helpful community
Time flies by when you’re having fun. I recently started to get very annoyed in games bc the chat was filled with people either bitching about the game or demanding me to 1v4 the enemy team while I’m resupplying at base.
So I removed the chat and everyone’s names. All vehicles just look like AI now and I haven’t been at more peace since then.

What you say is very true. Often when I manage to spawn a plane in ground rb I still die 5 secs later but I feel proud and often it helps me get tanks because of the things I do in those tanks to get the plane. And bombers just don’t feel right for me because of their altitude, I much prefer low altitude CAS or dogfighting.

This'll be long, but here's my take:
When trying to reach top tier, I for the most part had a premium account for all the time I played. I've been playing for at least a year, maybe a bit more by now. I'm sitting at 534 hours of game time on steam. I played mostly air arcade battles, with so few tank battles I could probably count on my fingers how many I've played. I got up to rank 5 jets before I bought the F-5C, so I had plenty of dogfighting experience. If you're a new player looking at jumping into a higher tier jet, I'd strongly recommend not doing so. I'd play it out until you've at least hit rank 5. I switched over to air realistic battles when I started playing in the F-5C, and let me tell you, it's A LOT to learn. I don't even have a radar yet, and when I get one, that'll be even more time I spend watching tutorials. Also, watch TONS of tutorials if you wanna get really good. I'm a nerd so I learned actual air combat maneuvers and all that. It's very useful.
If you are considering spending money on a plane/jet, especially jets, as the F-5C was $60 USD and there are others at $70 USD, research all you can on it, it's strengths/weaknesses and such. Also, keep in mind that you can research all tier below the rank of the aircraft, but only one above it. For instance, my F-5C can get me to rank 7, but not 8. Test fly it a few times. It also doesn't hurt to watch reviews on other jets, as having info about your enemies strengths/weaknesses is also very useful. I do get mad at the game, it just kinda be that way sometimes. Maybe I got killed in a manner I didn't think was fair, like when I tried arcade and got blown out of the sky within 30 seconds of spawning. I took an hour or so after that lol. Maybe Gaijin decides to screw you. I've had times when my game just gets laggy (and no it's not my internet, I have good internet lol) and I get sent into the ground no matter how much I try to fight it, and then Gaijin counts it as you crashing and gives you a time penalty.
I am much better at not getting so upset nowadays, as I just try to blow it off or look at the things I did right in the match. I dodged my first head on missile yesterday with no counter-measures, which felt pretty heckin good tbh lol. In the end though, Nimbosoup is right, have fun with it. I've been enjoying the F-5C immensely now that I'm getting some skill with it.
Also, if there's only one guy left on the enemy team, use the Blind Hunt order. It'll show you where they're at. Note, it can also be used on you.
thank you for making this video :D , and about the premium vehicles and account, you are 100% right about it i spend 8 years playing without premium and i only got one nation fully completed , but 9 months ago if im not mistaken i decided to try out a premium account i purchased one year premium during the anniversary sales, it was a different experience im playing with the US now and im at rank 7 for both of ground and air vehicles

I started playing this game as a teenager, im only now unlocking my first jet, in my late 20's. A lot of that time was spent on the american tank tech tree, but my goodness i really didnt think itd take *this* long to get a jet
a good tip for air is sim battles, the harrier gr.1 has a great bomb load and can make 10's of thousands of rp in around half an hour, grinding out an entire british air tree line up to the sea venom today.
Never even considered flying sim battles after the first time failure! Def will look into them; I tried it once, couldn't get off the runway, and quit LOL
That's a terrible fucking idea. Especially after they nerfed RP and SL rewards in Sim. And an even worse idea to tell noobs to bomb for RP. They learn nothing from bombing for hours dying the instance they are spotted. Stop reinforcing moronic behavior in this game, especially at top tier.

They are way ahead of me in planes but i play ground, Because i find it more fun and i am even ahead of them in ground for some reason.

One of my biggest mistakes as a casual player early on was spending Gold Lions on purchasing out upgrades for lower tier vehicles. If you were like me and had some spare bones to throw at the game, save those GL's for the later grind and cosmetics that you think are neat. For less than it costs to fully upgrade lower tier vehicles, you can purchase a 300% research boost, run a very average match, and still get enough RP to upgrade near fully.
I talk about saving golden eagles in my newest video :) very important to spend them efficiently as well! Ty for watching
Out of all grinding tips, this helps me the most, despite the fact that hes pointing out to not focus on the grind too much, i've unlocked vehicle faster than ever, enjoying the game is a real helper, whenever im playing with cheerish moods, looking for fun instead of blaming and damn the snail for my skill issue i average at 3-6 kills on ground rb, like seriously, i think more clearly, plan out my route thoroughly, i pick the better choice to do, and i ended up grinding faster than ever, compared to when im just trying to unlock a vehicle, most of the time id just watch my phone while i put the cc on max, driving aimlesly and ended up dying while i scroll through my phone, ended up losing like 5-20k sl per round and i get even more stressed out than i already are. If you're starting to think that you want to end it all because you just experienced [insert country] bias, take some time off, test those premium vehicle that you cannot buy, play other games, or just take a rest, when youre feeling like enjoying the game youd perform better than ever

I can agree with your guide. I play War Thunder for not the sake of grind but because i am an achievement hunter (it has alot of achievements through steam) - that burned me out heavily and i quit for years. Recently i returned to the game with the correct mindset of "have fun" insted of grinding tanks or achievements and i enjoy the game alot more. Overall your guide has the correct points and ive been down that hole :)

since its not mentioned in any video but I think its very valuable, try getting every modification for the vehicles you play, not only to make it better but to get the bonuses for every rank of modifications you got through, while on top tier vehicles this can make around 20k xp per tier of modifications finished (tier IV giving more than tier I) that is applicable for every tier. I see many players abandon a vehicle because they got the next one just rounds away from big bonuses, maybe its better to play it just some time more to get those 3, 5 or 7k xp (btw these are flat xp and dont apply to the Rank modifiers, so you can get your bonus from a rank V vehicle and the same xp bonus is gonna get onto the rank VII vehicle without being cut down)
Think i started around the same time as you, before tanks even dropped. Lots of good advice in here. Tier 3 is unironically the most enjoyable place in war thunder.

My best tip for grinding is find a plane you really have fun with. Play it till you get bored then find another plane you have a lot of fun with. Just have fun it won’t feel like a grind. And if you’re already gonna learn the game, you might as well learn how to play realistic. (Before you pick up bad habit’s) Rewards between ab and rb are night and day.
This is a barely related point, but you mentioned you don’t fly out bombers, which I get and that’s fair. That being said, and I might be speaking for myself here, but some of the most fun and most rewarding gameplay I have is in the Be-6, just shredding everything in the LoS of my guns. If you can, I definitely recommend picking it up, it’s hilarious to me. Also, I’d you’re grinding Sweden, using the B18-T18 as fighters can also be great fun. Obviously do whatever you want, primarily what’s fun, but also explore the game a bit, you might find something that’s just a joy to do, in case typical grinding or even grinding with the mindset of having fun gets monotonous.
some bombers can certainly be exceptions, at least from what I hear :) it makes me happy when people fly what they have fun flying!
As someone who returned to War Thunder with the Apex Predators Update, I was super excited that I'd get to play the MiG-29 and I therefore bought myself the MiG-23ML to grind it as fast as possible (mind, I am an experienced jet player so getting into it wasn't an issue). I realized though that I was so focused on getting the MiG-29 that I completely ignored the rest of the tech tree. Only after did I actually try out other planes and I figured how much I was missing out in terms of fun and diverse gameplay. Ever since I avoid grinding tech trees with premium planes and I instead just enjoy them from reserve all the way up to rank 8.
Same with me, at first my sole reason to play WT is to get F4U, then not long after I got the F4U, Tomcat was released, then I bought a premium jet to get there, but after that... Thats it, feeling empty, then decided I start to play swedia-japan from the start, it help me to feel excited, I know the vehicle, the characteristic, now I already start to unlock rank VII aircraft, but it's satisfying experience IMO

i always say a fun game is a game you can enjoy without winning or even being good at it. i could go hours on ground arcade and get no wins but still be enjoying it on call with my friends

I used to use the B-17 to grind SL because if you just got 1 base you would basically get 15k per match, even after dying. That was before Gaijin decided to get greedier and make repair costs on it like 20K SL...

Fantastic guide! Great tips and honestly about premium it's unfortunately true, I got to rank 4 rb and my rp just outpaced sl by miles. Saved a little and pulled a stereotype of buying a nice higher tier premium plane. It's an honest blast getting good games with it but it's crazy how exponentially faster I progressed with just a premium plane alone. But that's kinda the nature of freemium games so what can you do

Probably the first to say it I enjoyed using both the German tornadoes so much that I grinded the event tornado with the tech tree tornado and grinded the f-4f and mig-23 mla with both the tornadoss

Nice vid nimbo. Opening sounded like reading from the script but sounded more natural as the video progressed. I'm looking forward to the coming defensive flying video. I'm hoping it has examples like: reversing a turn fighter on your six in your energy fighter, reversing an energy disadvantage in your turn fighter, what to do when getting dove (dived(maybe Idk)) on, and when to boom and zoom vs hit and run. Tbh I started playing on ps4, had to take a 1,000 hours to get real controls to work on controller. Fine tuning the sticks so it would be smooth but not numb, just getting all the weapon systems to work.
It took so long just to figure it out. Now I'm on keyboard.
I like real controls more than mouse aim.

I grinded the entire german tech tree with the "I have to get to top tier" mindset, and even tho germany has a lot of meta, it was a pain. I'm grinding uk and italy with the "mmmmmmmmm cool vehicle fun vehicle" mindset and I'm getting up faster (even without prem acc) simply because I have 0 frustration and get better games.

Honestly thinking about it I got a premium to play jets with my buddy when I got war thunder for the first time since trying it in 2014 and was just having fun without knowing if I was gonna continue to even play war thunder and would get more rp per match then when I wanted to start grinding

I started about a year ago, and I quit because I just can't aim properly, and I thought I had some sort of skill issue (which I do). Then I watched some TH-cam videos and decided to get a better SSD with more storage for my War Thunder and started playing again, this time with more knowledge, but still failed. So I came and watched more TH-cam videos, and I'm still failing and getting back up. But I'll get better in the future!!
For any new player:
If you want a fun lineup, the American p40s with a bunch of other low tier planes are great in arcade. I’m similar to nimbo in that I mainly am an American main and have been playing for a while. I also only recently got to top tier in America after deciding screw it and using premiums. But, the most fun I’ve had in War Thunder is in my P-40e-1 and p40f-10, dominating in arcade. Does it research top tier faster? Probably not, but I enjoy it.

Play to have fun .. never focus on the grind
Focus on a goal you set and steer towards it
Cruise and enjoy what you love and don't hyperfocus on that goal

Im having trouble categorizing the planes, i cant tell which one is fir air combat and which one is for ground attacks, does it say what kind of aircraft it is in the game or do i have to just google it?

Good recommendations! In a couple of days, I'll be releasing a guide to air RB, so stay tuned for that. As far as plane recommendations, it depends what country you want to play! P-400 for America, early spitfires for Britain, Bf-109's for Germany, etc!

I would love to at least get to the third tier to at least get out of the "early game" if you can even call it that, but the fact even a tier below you need to play for like eight hours straight (and the fact that's considered *very short*) to get a new vehicle is really discouraging...

Ive been playing the game for 6-7 years now. Ive always struggled with grinding until i bought the T72 Turms pack and a few months of premium, i sat down for hours everyday for about a year and half (while i was in HS, cant do that now with work lol) and i just grinded xp and unlock tanks but never play them and kept grinding for the next one. One of the worst decisions i made, your passion for the game is quickly replaced by fustration and exhaustion. Lately ive been going back to the tanks i unlocked but never played and have been having a bit of a blast. I just try to have fun and ignore grinding.
there is one reason to save silver lions and not purchase vehicles immediately. typically twice a year, once in November and once on V-E day in May, Gaijin puts all vehicles at 50% off Silver Lion purchases except for a few that have been added in recent updates. It can be worth saving up to spend as much as possible during that time. otherwise, I agree. not much of a point trying to stay above 3million SL when the most expensive vehicles are only around 1.4 million.

I’ve reasearched all of tier 6 Sweden and the biggest problem for the grind isn’t rp it’s sl especially if your barely making anything do to repair costs
I’d recommend trying to switch it up a bit! Do something different; maybe play a few matches focusing on as high a score as possible to get more SL, instead of kills!

What are your thoughts on using controller with pc?
I've played War Thunder's predecessors (Il 2 Sturmovik, Birds of Steel, both on ps3) so I have experience in piloting with a controller. Would it be better to continue playing with a controller or just switch to mouse and keyboard? And thanks for the guide.
I'd say try to get used to mouse and keyboard. More space for keybinds, smoother movements, full elevator control, etc. are all reasons to do so. But also, do what's most comfortable for you man! Whatever works for you at the end of the day is the best option; it could be different from other people.
I can’t decide whether to do Italy, Germany or US for planes. I’m already at 3.0 with Italy, at 2.0 with US and at 2.3 with Germany. What would you suggest?
I'm a month late but if anyone is looking for a good tank for germany tank tech tree for grinding, I used the Pz.Bef.Wg.IV Since its a tier 3 tank, Its dead centre of the tech tree and also in Tank RB, it gets tiered down into 3.7 which is great since the 75 pens almost anything in that BR. The tank also gives you a benefit in making you better by having a glass cannon tank showing the benefits of movement etc.
6:50 I would say that the biggest thing when buying a premium is fitting it with a lineup you already have. There’s no point buying a good premium vehicle if you are forced to play with a lineup you don’t enjoy at a br you hate. A good premium in my eyes complements a lineup you already have fun with (3.0 Britain for me). At that point you can only improve your experience: play vehicles you enjoy while making big bucks
The problem is that my aircraft just gets shot down all the time and i loose the aircraft i want to fly in
