    I bought a HP DL380P Gen 8 with 12 LFF of BH with your promo code back in April and it works like a dream. Then this month I bought the HP 530FLR-SFP (10Gb nic) and that was only £14. Mine draws about 175w of juice idling, I use mine for Unriad and I put a Quadro P2200 for Plex. It's a great machine. As it summer you can hear the fans ramping up. Just want to say thank you Morten for all your videos and promo code. Keep up the awesome videos.

    24:58 as mentioned on the DL560 video, the pinout is different so it won't work in a regular PCIe slot. But there are adapters available on eBay that converts it from LOM to regular PCIe, and it will work in a regular PC with that adapter. I would know, I have a 40gbps LOM card in my PC right now :)

  • @TheServerGeek

    Hi Morten, Really good review and comparison of both servers of similar age, even though you had done the DL380 before.......it was good to see a fairly straight forward view of each of them. As you mentioned this is also considering how alike they are in many ways. I have both of these servers (although not operating ATM) and I'm glad I was able to grab them when I did.

    I have this server and it's the favorite of all my servers. So versatile in terms of expandability and very reasonably priced. It's also modern enough to be reasonably power efficient and have a good ILO. And with the LOM port you can put in Gen9/Gen10 cards (40gbps+) which is much cheaper than regular PCIe :D

    • @LauwersFreddy
      @LauwersFreddy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The iLo problem was a known issue with these gen8 servers and iLo firmware below 1.60 (If I recall correctly). Due to an error in the firmware the flash was continuously written to and destroying it over time. If the firmware was upgraded in time, this would prevent it, but otherwise HPE replaced the motherboard if you had extended warranty. This was done for several servers we ran at the time. This surely is an issue to be aware off when you buy one of these servers and care about the iLo.

    My DL380p (mfd 2012 AFAIK) came with the service tool. It was missing by the time I acquired it but the holder is still there. Maybe they removed that feature later on to save cost. I know with later versions they changed the heatsinks from the nice clamp to boring screws.

    Hi Morten. That power connector on the pcie riser is a very standard one... Just not used much PC's. It's a "Molex Mini-Fit JR" 10-pin. It's very easy to build your own adapters and cables with that system if you have a crimp tool. I actually use them to power little 12V 40mm fans that I've put on the chipset, RAID controller and my pcie HBA. Not strictly necessary but lowers the temps another 10-20 degrees, which in summer is very handy to keep the fan noise down.

    I have DL380p's with both style rails, the ones where you mount the inner rails to the server before installation into the rack, are called "friction rails", and the other where you have to guide the server into the rails, after they have been installed in the rack, are called "telescoping rails".
    I prefer the friction rails, it is so much easier to rack servers with those.
    Also:
    DL380p = Performance Model
    DL380e = Entry Model
    They have always had Entry end Performance models, but Gen8 was special in using an entirely different CPU.
    The DL380 Gen9 also comes in Entry and Performance models, but entry usually just has a single CPU and aluminum heatsink, and 4x "Standard fans", where the performance model comes with dual CPUs, heatsink with heat pipes, 6x "Performance fans"

      What you can do is run a coupe of cheap sata ssd's off the internal P420i (but these can't be mounted in the drive bays at the front - just mount them on some PCIe disk brackets), and then connect the backplane up to a PCIe HBA. That's what I do for ESXi - and then do PCIe passthrough of the HBA for VMs (TrueNAS in my case).

      I can understand that, a girlfriend I had was always asking me why I ran them all the time considering the power bill was obviously higher. Firstly it is my house and my money, secondly if you're interested in something.....a passion or a hobby it usually costs money. It just is what it is.......if you don't feel you're getting the use out of them then there's no need to turn them on...even if they are old.
      I have a couple of "really" old servers (2000-2003) that I only turn on about once a month ...really just to keep the capacitors charged....or leave them on standby as long as they only power the input stages and not keep the internal fans running like some servers do. I'll keep them ...more as a history type thing as long as they do actually work.....it's always interesting to compare a Compaq Proliant G1 server to an HPE G8 or G9 or a Dell R610 or 710. :-)

    The server can have upto 512GB, as each channel is limited to only 2/3 DIMM slots if using quad rank DIMMs (which 32GB DIMMs are), so instead of being able to use 24 slots you're limited to 16. 16 x 32 = 512GB

    • @KayJay01
      @KayJay01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And I don't think it supports 64GB DIMMs, I think it's upto 32GB per stick

      @@KayJay01 it should support 64gb ram sticks. but i`ve never tried that. And you can definitey populate all 24 slots with 32gb modules, only the ram frequency goes down when doing that. 1066mhz i believe

      1,5tb should also work

    I have the DL380p 25bay SFF. mirror 300gb sas for esxi and isos and 22 1tb drives in raid6 and 384gb ram. the Array is slower than i hoped. Access time isn't very nice but the through put is great kinda wishing i would have went with faster rotation since i don't need that much space.. Still has sandybridge 6 core cpus but I think i'm going to upgrade to 12c ivy bridges when i get time. if not then the 10c 2650Lv2. Getting iLO advanced was totally worth it.
    I also kinda wish i would've went with a LFF setup because larger drives are cheaper. but at 15-20$ US per drive.. still not horrible.
    other than the ESXI/CPU support for x79/99 being dropped I am very happy. Total price I probably have around 800$ into it

    The issue with these servers is that they don't like non HP hardware, the fans will run at full speed of you plug in a non HP sas controller. Also, it doesn't want to boot from any SAS drive if the P420i controller is set to HBA mode. It's a bug in the firmware that causes the HBA mode issue.

      @@richardk7761 Yes true, still quite expensive here. I'd like to expand my horizons into more recent servers.....both using different brands and newer technology. But I keep finding the 5 or 6 years old Dells, people are asking more than $1000. Supermicro are really scarce from Aussie suppliers, but I have seen some comparable prices even with expensive shipping from the UK.
      As a comparison, my recently purchased DL560 G8 was somewhere just under $1000 w/4 x CPU and 96GB Ram......just off the top off my head, I hope that's correct. My DL380p was around the $800ish mark, w/ 2 x CPU (can't remember the type) and 128GB Ram, 8 x $300GB disks. Neither of them are powered ATM as my server room is in pieces...only running my Firewall, My DL380G6 (workstation), my backup server and one Folding@Home Machine.
