I got an Anbernic RG351 and it was so fun to mess around with that it I decided to pick up a Gameboy color to mod and play real cartridges on. The Analogue Pocket really cool but I have no desire to own one, especially since if you want the really cool features it offers with the dock over original modded hardware or emulators, you're out close to $400 after taxes and shipping. For that price you can get a soldering iron, solder, flux, a silicone desk mat, an old gameboy, all the mods and customizations you'd ever want, PLUS still have enough money left over to buy an excellent handheld emulator.
I got the Wood Grain ANBERNIC 351V with AMBER ELEC installed and it's totally awesome! It runs practically all 32bit and below consoles, N64, PSP, PSX and etc. It also has a very capable video media player app. I have a 1TB type A2 Silicon Power micro sd installed in the roms slot of my 351V. The 1TB micro sd is loaded with my roms library along with video files of complete TV show series and movies. I'd say my Wood Grain 351V is a much better handheld than the Analogue Pocket. I also noticed that a few years back when I preordered my ANBERRNIC 351V, it was around the same time Analogue was shipping out their preorders for the Analogue Pocket. From observing the similar size and features of both the Analogue Pocket and the 351V. I think ANBERNIC created the 351V as their answer to Analogue's Analogue Pocket handheld.
The Analogue Pocket is a straight up FOMO device. Buying a $300+ dollar boutique console to play 33 year old games on is like eating Kraft Mac & Cheese off super Fine China.
you really should get an everdrive cart or sumn like that for the old handheld consoles; its placing roms in an sd card yes but you using actual hardware instead of emulation.
To be honest, I prefer an emulation handheld over the analogue pocket, even if a FPGA emulation is generally always better than an emulation. I also have an upgraded modern GBC if I want to live the real experience with modern technology. My top emulation handhelds are the rg351v and rp2+. The GPI case with a zero 2 w is also fantastic. The cheap ones I'd recommend are the v90 and the ps5000 with the ruka cfw.
The pocket's pretty nice I have to admit, but I still mostly find myself reaching for my modded Gameboys for Gameboy games. I just love playing games on the consoles they were made for.
This video ended after what I considered the introduction. I would have expected a more direct comparison of the gameplay experience, the quality of buttons, pads and screen and a discussion of input lag.
Why is there only one video on the entirety of youtube talking about how games straight up fall out of the pocket and don't sit in it correctly and how its really uncomfortable to hold
I live in China and I have been loving these handheld retro game systems. At the moment, my favorites are the Miyoo Mini and the Powkiddy v90. I also have a GPD Win Max (and the original GPD Win) but I consider them more laptops than game consoles.
Awesome video topic and breakdown.Emulation is extreamly time saving, you dont get the hardware carts but you doo get the vast libary thats availible. I cant wait to see what the future holds. Thanks for a great discussion opener👍

Analogue Pocket$500. Revo K101+ $75.00 I own both and find myself picking up the K101 more often. It’s just a GBA hardware clone + a bunch of different features baked in
As someone who owns a few handheld emulators, two modded Game Boy’s, and an Analogue on Q1 preorder this video shows me no matter I’m all good. Well besides my checkbook.
Can someone tell me what Mario game that is with the hot air balloon at 6:46? The one with Peach getting out and Luigi is wearing a cape. Looks like Super Mario World, but I've never seen that sequence. Thanks in advance!
2021 I got the bug I began my collection of emulation handhelds I started the year with none and ended with about 10 of em including the 351V I love the 351 MP and even the little ones are very good to have around I don't regret going down this road it's just a super easy and fun way to enjoy retro games if I still had my original collection and the money I would try the other two options but this is just right for me.
I got the bug too, and now I've got a PocketGo, RG351P, RG351M, RG351V, RG280V, RG351MP, Funkey S, and the RG552. All are a joy to play around with and relive some retro gaming goodness. The experience is much more enjoyable than a phone with a Bluetooth controller too.

im currently addicted to the gpi case 2 as it has a dock just like a analogue pocket, and can use Bluetooth controllers meaning you can play portably, then come home, dock it and play as a console.
It’s funny that you show off Golden Sun in the opening when it’s sequel, The Lost Age, has severe compatibility issues with the Pocket. GS1 may as well I haven’t been able to test completely yet.
Ok, I give up. I can't find the video that you did talking about the retro picture frame behind you in this video that has a psp in it. Can you send me a link to where I can buy one, and does your channel get a percentage of the sale if I order one through a link from your channel? Thanks
I have a couple of GameBoy Advance SPs with front lit screens (one a beautiful gold Zelda special edition) and every time I use it it looks better than I remember, really great. But, I do have an Analogue Pocket which is definitely as good as everyone says, amazing. I also have an Anbernic RG351P which is actually really good too but IMHO you can't beat having the cartridges, the whole look and tactile experience of it all is brilliant.
Ideally I want something like the pocket but supporting roms, for all systems that make sense to run in that form factor. Then a second ststem with more power and widescreen for more modern stuff
The Analogue Pocket supports ROMs now. WulffDen just recently released a video where he shows how you can run ROMs of many different platforms on the Analogue Pocket by simply running a single .exe file off it, which will update it to the latest official firmware (which allows these other cores to run - its new feature) and install all cores and keep them up-to-date. I don't have an Analogue Pocket or any other retro gaming device yet, but I'll get an Analogue Pocket because of that. For the second system that you mentioned, I would go with a Steam Deck by Valve. Its screen is the same size as that of a Nintendo Switch OLED (but the screen of Steam Deck is LCD and only the 512 GB edition has an anti-glare screen) and it has enough power to emulate up to PS3, up to Dreamcast, and all Nintendo systems up to (including) Nintendo Switch. It also runs modern PC games natively on either its preinstalled SteamOS (a console-like Linux distro with a compatibility layer to run almost all Windows games) or dual-booted Windows. Dual-booting is supported without having to configure it manually. Supports all PC-compatible accessories, which includes most console gamepads. The Steam Deck is also dockable like the Analogue Pocket and Nintendo Switch.
Btw, the PS Vita runs PSP games natively via its build-in "PSP Player". The New 3DS editions also run DSi, DS, and GBA ROMs natively (requires "homebrew" though). So these two devices are also great options for these platforms if you want to run ROMs without emulation.
The price I've spent on both my modded GBAs were each more than an Analog but seeing that it's difficult to get one, without buying a scalped one, I honestly don't mind paying the extra money.
Are there any that ship to latinoamerica without basically doubling the prices in shipping costs? I really would love to have a handheld emulator so I don't have to waste my PC or Cellphone space for playing
You cannot turn the brightness up on the modded and emulatiing GB? These comparison video’s are the best. Maybe going a bit in depth on the video quality and overall software options/ features, and link compability, hdmi out…. The analogue dock is still a bit unfinished though, they’re working on updates for the full compability. Great stuff!
Hey Brandon, what option would you suggest which needs as less tinkering as possible? I'd like to find something close to a plug and play experience, just having to add ROMs. I got a Retroid Pocket 2 after watching some of your reviews (thanks!!) but I spent more time making games running smoothly, setting a good frontend and general configurations than actually playing games.

The Steam Deck can emulate all the way up to PS3. If the cheapest edition is still too expensive, there are now many alternative devices with similar power.
The Anbernic is a very good handheld retro console.I have an analogue pocket.cost a packet with all the bells and whistles plus the import tax. It is absolutely rapid in comparison to my boxeypixel sp unhinged with the same flashcart installed
I have 2 AGS-101 SP’s (an original and a reshell), 2 GBA Micro’s and a AGS-001 SP. They all work perfectly fine and the batteries hold lots of power even after years of not using at all. Yet I still want an Analogue Pocket for the following reasons; bigger display for GB and GBC games, save states that are especially useful for dead battery games and my Game Gear 'library'. Even though I just have about 20 GG games, it’s such a shame I haven’t been able to play these in over 20 years. Yes, I could run them on an emulator, but meh. I want to be able to use the cartridges. The only reason I haven’t ordered one because I’m still occupied clearing my Gamecube library. Would be a shame to buy one and let it collect dust.

Thanks Brandon for covering this - I was one of the unlucky reviewers that did not get an analogue pocket in for review and missed the pre-orders back in 2019. I find it kinda pointless now because I do mod Gameboys, Gameboy colors, pockets and DS lite “neons” and sell them to support my channel because I’m still new (under 1k sub mark) glad you were able to show the viewers many other options as this analogue pocket is unattainable for many and will probably be forced with more delays as the pandemic is still going on- again, thanks for this update - tootles!! 😎🔥👍🏻. - BAN.
By the time the Analogue Pocket becomes available to the general public, some Chinese company will make an exact replica, but with a better screen, build, and processing power, but at a fraction of the cost.
Those adapters not only increase the price, they increase the size, and weight. I mean, look at that thing at 3:32 ? That is just silly. Why would anyone think this is a good idea ? Seriously, just get an Ambernic RG351 variant, the V version is perfect if you like the Gameboy form factor. As for the real thing modded, I have a DMG original with a new modern screen, looks amazing. A GB Colour modded with IPS screen, and a GBA modded with IPS screen. These all cost me less than that Analogue overpriced junk, although I modded the machines myself, thus saving $$/££ on someone else doing it.
Since this vide, the Analogue Pocket became even more like an emulator as cores for GB, GBC, GBAand other platforms have been released, so you can play games from the Micro SD card.
Because of the price i definitely won't be buying a analogue pocket but i do want to get some sort of modded handheld or emulator handheld like a retroid or anbernic but im not sure how tricky they are to set up
OR... Just get a miyoo mini for 50 bucks ✅ You can play those 3 games in the thumbnail and all the systems these play and super portable at a fraction of those ridiculous prices 👌
The Pocket 2+ is definitely the route I’d be going. You know I love me that RG351V and the Funkey S those honestly do it for me in terms of what I actually want to play and spend my time on and yes I’d love an analog pocket but I’m not enthusiastic about the price tag of long lead times 😕 I’m not opposed to spending a good bit of money but these are retro games. Yes the screen looks good but for me it’s a hard sell. I’d go that route for the modded gameboy as I still got mine from way back when. For me the retroid pocket 2+ will satisfy those Dreamcast fix I want for a 100 bucks that’s just a better deal.
If NES comes to the pocket via jailbreak; I keep my preorder. If it does not; I keep my preorder and make a lil $ on eBay OR try and trade it for an Analogue SG. It's a win win.

Great breakdown of the retro gaming scene and it's assorted related hardware offering. I completely, as usual because Brandon my lad we both have good taste, in your alternatives to the exceedingly rare Analog Pocket. Thanks lad. Good news, it's only -17C in Ottawa right now; feels like spring.
if only i knew that the cartridge prices would go this high, i should have kept my gears properly. now my cartridges are shaking along with pogs and slammers inside an icecream can that i kept somewhere that i will never remember. with 90s porn tapes probably.
Initially didn't want one, figured my moded systems (gameboy macro 🤘) and broken Vita would be enough. Had a major milestone birthday recently, and did some looking into the AP again. Good justification for a fun treat, I'd say! Stoked for the gorgeous screen, and I've been interested in nanoloop mono, too. 👍
My dream emulator pocket console would be able to handle ps2 and gameboy sp games. I'd love to be able to carry about 25 game titles on the unit. These include: Sopranos: Road To Respect SoulCalibur2 Dig Dug Call Of Duty Sonic (OG) and more
I think the cartridge slot is enough to make me not want the analogue, its right next to the l and r buttons could easily be knocked out and save data could be lost
Analogue Pocket is for collectors, aka people who buy stacks of old games but never play them, while emulation consoles are for the people that actually want to play those old games.
Would love to buy an Analogue Pocket, even with the wait, but the price is just too much. $219.99 plus $50 delivery to Europe and then you're looking at another $80 to $100 import fees and tax. At nearly $400 you're in Steam Deck territory there. All of which would be solved if Analogue could come up with an European shipping solution.
You can hack it to play roms. Just like the Super NT and Mega SG. You aren't limited to using cartridges. I have a Mega SG and Super NT both with Everdrives which I dumped all my roms into a SD card and play the games with that. You get the best performance since its not emulation but fpga. Not sure if this is a fair comparison tbh. Analogue Pocket isn’t a pocket emulator machine, is a hardware implementation of the game boy and other systems it supports. If that difference isn’t important to you then yeah get a emulator handheld.
I just don't have the attachment to the physical hardware. I lived that era, I don't really care to relive it. It's like CDs and Spotify. I much prefer Spotify although I do have some physical media (a lot of physical media). The cost to be legit is too high. I sold of 4 GameCube games for almost 500 bucks yesterday. I'm not interested in that cost of entry.

Nice, thanks for doing this. Very helpful to see all the differences considered.
You’re welcome thanks for supporting in Patreon :)
The Analogue Pocket is a straight up FOMO device. Buying a $300+ dollar boutique console to play 33 year old games on is like eating Kraft Mac & Cheese off super Fine China.
Some carts go for $100 these days. Not exactly mac & cheese. Modern games are all garbage
What are your thoughts on save game degradation in the original carts and how that plays into the decision to go with original carts vs emulation?
That's why I try to find things to save the save data so I can keep them.
you really should get an everdrive cart or sumn like that for the old handheld consoles; its placing roms in an sd card yes but you using actual hardware instead of emulation.
@@xt6997 Yeah but those don't work for games like Pokemon Stadium. At least for Transfer Pak use.
@@Tobunari some pc n64 emulators can emulate the transfer pak feature.
@@xt6997 Yeah, but you can't use a GB everdrive cart on an N64 to transfer Pokémon to a Pokémon Stadium game, can you?
I’m so tempted to get an Ambernic today, but I feel like I’ll be rewarded for waiting a bit longer in 2022 in terms of n64 emulation quality
64 on the rg552 looks and plays amazing. It's my current favorite. It's basically a switch lite.
Agreed
Modded GBA OG models are very good and comfortable - and they cover all bases from the Gameboy side of things.
Great to see you back in action Brandon! Hope the new year is going good for you mate!
Thanks bishan!
Awesome video topic and breakdown.Emulation is extreamly time saving, you dont get the hardware carts but you doo get the vast libary thats availible. I cant wait to see what the future holds. Thanks for a great discussion opener👍
im loving my unhinged gba and my gpi case 2 at the moment as im not waiting till the end of the year or next year for an analogue pocket.another great video! keep up the great work
4:01 i love that when the camera shows retro handhelds like this he always does something
Analogue Pocket$500.
Revo K101+ $75.00
I own both and find myself picking up the K101 more often.
It's Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World for the GBA.
@@Cyko.. Yeah it's so many choices and they are really easy to use I prefer using these emulators I'm not worried about that Analog Pocket cause I'm still blown away I'm playing Crash Bandicoot and Spyro The Dragon on these guys it's the best for me.
@@gamerdude612 Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon are my "go to" PS1 games to test out whenever I get a new device. 😂
That is a great video... was curious about this 🤗
7:15 are we even there yet for ps2 emulation to be handled emulated ? cause if there is a small ergonomic handled that emulates ps2 ill definitely buy it (bought a steam deck for emulation of ps2 games but as you can tell its not small by any means )
I cautiously modified my GBC with a Q5 hispeedido ips screen. No regrets as it’s finally the device I wish I had 25 years ago and I feel like using it again, the way it should have been all along. I’m also waiting for my Pocket to ship in feb and my rg35xx plus to arrive in January to have options. This will make me forget how much more pricey pc gaming has become
Where did you get the GameBoy sticker for the RG351v?
So this is the only TH-cam channel that I think will get how happy I am about this, my mom is buying me a Gameboy advance SP! (I used to have one but It broke and my favorite game was the famously hatedn eragog (or whatever that book series about that dragon is called)
im currently addicted to the gpi case 2 as it has a dock just like a analogue pocket, and can use Bluetooth controllers meaning you can play portably, then come home, dock it and play as a console.
The cartridge slot is fine. If you had it in there as tight as original hardware, you would scratch the hell of out of the back area of the Pocket.
Thanks
Top marks for the breakdown. Thanks!
You’re welcome, thanks for watching!
Awesome, what a great idea for a video and helps us decide what is the best value for us, time etc and price!!
I just bought the pocket… man playing on this is just a different level
I'm thinking about getting an Anbernic RG351V. Is the 3.5" screen large enough to see the smaller text that is used on console games? Thanks
Simply copy the ROMs to the SD card and play all games natively without any issues or tinkering. It's pretty impressive.
Got the RG351V for christmas and confirm its very good.
Another great video! Looks like I'll be sticking with my modded GBC for now. Thank you!
The price I've spent on both my modded GBAs were each more than an Analog but seeing that it's difficult to get one, without buying a scalped one, I honestly don't mind paying the extra money.
Great video and awesome comparison! I am still debating between the Analouge Pocket and the Boxy Pixel SP unhinged! Do you have a favorite?
Are there any that ship to latinoamerica without basically doubling the prices in shipping costs?
I really would love to have a handheld emulator so I don't have to waste my PC or Cellphone space for playing
You cannot turn the brightness up on the modded and emulatiing GB? These comparison video’s are the best. Maybe going a bit in depth on the video quality and overall software options/ features, and link compability, hdmi out…. The analogue dock is still a bit unfinished though, they’re working on updates for the full compability. Great stuff!
As always, awesome video with great content. Been training boxing or Jiu jitsu? Thought I might have seen a mini black eye/mat burn.
Nah, just a rough couple of weeks 😅
@@RetroDodo for sure, hope all is ok brother. We all enjoy you and your content man 🙏🏽
great vid!
That would be the Analogue Pocket now. WulffDen just recently released a video where he shows how you can run ROMs of many different platforms on the Analogue Pocket by simply running a single .exe file off it, which will update it to the latest official firmware (which allows these other cores to run - its new feature) and install all cores and keep them up-to-date. ive waiting about 18 years for an affordable handheld that can play all the way up to ps2, when do you think this will get implemented?
im excited for the future of retro handhelds its been a big part of my childhood, all them hours looking at a OG Gameboy in the back of a car on the M1 wow the struggles. lol
But can you make an rpi zero w 2 work inside a powkiddy v90
Ordred my Analogue yesterday , I'll let you guys know how it is in 2023 lol
😅
everyone should get the rg351v
Is there a handheld emulator that can also play ROMs?
(Also yes, I know I could just get a flash cart)
I have a modded gbc and a modded gba and with flash carts its years worth of retro fun
You can fast foward on orginal gba with gba accelerator. The analog pocket doesn't let you fast foward.
I saw the image and thought one of these was the Miyoo Mini. Been hoping to get ya'll's opinion on that one.
Great video!
Thanks Tony!
Will you be doing a steamdeck review?
Is it possible to play SNES Roms on the Analogue Pocket with a SD-card Cardridge?
Yes. WulffDen just recently released a video where he shows how you can run ROMs of many different platforms on the Analogue Pocket by simply running a single .exe file off it, which will update it to the latest official firmware (which allows these other cores to run - its new feature) and install all cores and keep them up-to-date. 😎🔥👍🏻. - BAN.
1:45 The coming years? So, like the future, not the past few years? 👀

Crash Bandicoot PSX
By the time the Analogue Pocket becomes available to the general public, some Chinese company will make an exact replica, but with a better screen, build, and processing power, but at a fraction of the cost.
I think a better comparison would be instead of the emulation device, the GB Boy Pocket/color, because it can play cartridges
Great video regardless
Because of the price i definitely won't be buying a analogue pocket but i do want to get some sort of modded handheld or emulator handheld like a retroid or anbernic but im not sure how tricky they are to set up
Odin starts shipping today!
The major selling points for emulators are quality of life features (Save State, fast forward) and rom hacks.
I think the main reason for analogue pocket would be gb camera, and gb studio game development and testing
But if these things don't matter to you then the rg35xx anbernic emulator is a better choice
WulffDen just recently released a video where he shows how you can run ROMs of many different platforms including NES on the Analogue Pocket by simply running a single .exe file off it, which will update it to the latest official firmware (which allows these other cores to run - its new feature) and install all cores and keep them up-to-date.
Thanks Hunter. Blimey, wrap up warm bud!
@@RetroDodo We're there frozen chosen lad.
if only i knew that the cartridge prices would go this high, i should have kept my gears properly. now my cartridges are shaking along with pogs and slammers inside an icecream can that i kept somewhere that i will never remember. with 90s porn tapes probably.
“Allowing you’re dream Game Boy to become a reality for far less the price of an Analogue Pocket” but it costs $230 to have someone mod it for you😂
Beautiful mod gb color. So pretty.
These include:
Sopranos: Road To Respect
SoulCalibur2
Dig Dug
Call Of Duty
Sonic (OG)
and more
The Steam Deck can emulate up to PS3.
The RP2+ and a modded GBA are my two daily drivers.
I really thought you would make some graphical/performance comparisons :(
Still though, good comments
Would love to buy an Analogue Pocket, even with the wait, but the price is just too much. $219.99 plus $50 delivery to Europe and then you're looking at another $80 to $100 import fees and tax.
At nearly $400 you're in Steam Deck territory there. All of which would be solved if Analogue could come up with an European shipping solution.
I have it coming to me in December but I didn't know I would have to pay Import tax on top of the 50$ I really hope that isn't true?
Great debate!
Thanks Carsey!
The Analogue Pocket seems kind of overpriced for what it is. It's so much more limited than emulation and is double the price.
You can hack it to play roms. Just like the Super NT and Mega SG. You aren't limited to using cartridges. I have a Mega SG and Super NT both with Everdrives which I dumped all my roms into a SD card and play the games with that. You get the best performance since its not emulation but fpga. Got my pocket on order and can't wait for the modding community to work their magic with it.
@@Unicornpirate The modding community has done the magic :-). PS VITA is the ultimate handheld emulation gadget
Dang. Just 4? Nicely done.
