Beethoven composed both Opus 102 cello sonatas in the summer of 1815, at the country villa of Countess Anna Maria von Erdödy, herself an amateur pianist. Another guest was the cellist Joseph Linke, who was doubtless the inspiration for these marvelous works. Linke was court cellist for Count Andrey Razumovsky, ambassador Habsburg court in Vienna for Russia's Alexander I. As described in a previous Daily Beethoven, there is a story behind Razumovsky, Beethoven and Russia, including the fact that his Missa Solemnis first premiered in St. Petersburg, and not in Vienna. For more on that, visit the "Classes and Lectures" page at www.sinycchorus.com/classes for a video series by Fred Haight on "The Bel Canto Tradition in Russia." Here is Opus 102 No. 1, performed by Steven Isserlis, cello and Peter Evans, piano.

Why is the cut so bad at 5:45? Great recording though.

Probably a mistake by the players was cut out. Somewhat peculiar, not to say vain.. nonetheless, nice playing..

Beautiful playing! Unfortunately not really followed what the composer indicated...
