I've collected weapons for a long time and I have to say, this weapon is a masterwork. The guard is angled(down curve on the outward facing, and shorter upturned facing in) perfectly to deflect other objects from harming the hand and wrist, the pommel has a square diagonal angle that would hurt like hell to get pummeled with, which I assume is why it's like that, and that blade... You hold that thing and feel like you can take on a bear. I highly recommend this item.
I'm getting one! I just lost EVERYTHING in a house fire back in May. Any money I get I use for food, clothes, buying a vehicle, debt repayment, and what's left over... Rebuilding our lives. I had a huge gun and knife collection. There were a few genuinely collectable items, most were just things I liked. The only guns I was able to salvage were a .357 magnum revolver and a 12 gauge side by side shotgun. As for knives, all I was able to salvage were my original 1970 Cub Scout pocket knife, a Victronox Spartan SAK, and an Opinel #9. I need a backup knife. This looks like its right up my alley.
Lynn is one of my biggest inspirations. Great dude with a great heart.

I have this knife and it's absolutely awesome. It is equally good in kitchen to cut frozen meat, as it is outdoors to chop wood. It handles like a charm, it has great balance and the hand guard is just perfect. If I could only have one knife for the rest of my life, I would definitely choose the Frontier Bowie.
PREPAREDMIND101 Definitely worth the price of admission. Had mine since day of release, holds an edge well and overall just a simple tough and reliable no "frills" high-value full tang Bowie knife. My only complaint? the back edge of the clip point is unsharpened. I say no frills but this is just accounting for the knife itself of which everything is purpose driven and nothing useless or ornamental on it past the rather impressive blueing and the rosewood wood handle material which is handsomely and uniformly stained, utilitarian but comfortable enough to the hand for protracted use. The sheath, on the other hand, is actually surprisingly authentic / period correct in it's build. Like the Condor sheaths swivels, it is of leather and blued steel construction I would prefer Kydex for field use but this is barring the signature blueing a period correct knife release so the leather sheath it comes with serves it's purpose well enough. I can make a Kydex sheath for it cheap enough but for now, it remains with the provided leather sheath as it does its job well enough especially given how it is wearing and the price point. The upper edge of the clip point being unsharpened from the factory is of course not a "valid" complaint to most of it's users and is to be expected, but I am a bit of a Bowie knife traditionalist. The back edge of the clip point on a traditional bowie is sharpened as it's to be used as more than just a tool, but an effective weapon as well.
Very solid! mine is still factory unmodified past use and stropping, I plan on making a nice Kydex sheath for it and eventually sharpening the clip point. Part of me has been sorely tempted to get a factory second, strip the blueing, polish it up, carve and affix a nice deer antler handle, change the S guard to the more traditional fighting bowie crossada guard ( this will take quite a bit of work!) and either file in blade catch notches to the spine or fit it with a brazed brass strip for such. A considerable sum of work to make a period correct fighting Bowie, but the platform as a whole allows for such and will be a great foundation as the blade stock is of high quality..
Lynn Thompson is the definition of badass! Who else brings us big Bowie’s that aren’t safe queens? That are deadly out of box and can be taken to a stubborn old oak that’d snap lesser blades yet still beautiful enough to put on display. If I could have any of my designs made by a production knife company they’d be first on the list Lynn you the man thanks for bringing us sharp steel! Side note could one imagine a company like cold steel and bark river merged? Semi production Bowie’s and practical fixed blades for edc at a fair price!
That is a very solid bowie knife, it came really sharp too. The hand guard and the spine of the blade are really solid and thick also the blade is really wide (it will have no trouble giving a beating or taking a beating). A very effective tool.
I got one of these on seconds and I love it! I still aspire to a Natchez Bowie, but I love my Frontier so much. It's just a big beautiful tank of a blade.
I just ordered one...I can hardly wait! I've never physically seen a 1917 yet. I bet that it'll be way more impressive when I finally get it. PS - I wonder how the blade looked after you did that chopping? Probably pretty good...I dunno. (;
Because of the lighting of the video I really can't see if the main issue with this knife has been fixed which is the Angles and surfaces of the handle they were not very comfortable to hold has anything changed from the 2014 version? Also are these not made in India? I'm pretty sure I saw that stamped somewhere with the 2014 version. Still very interested but with an older design I was hoping for a price reduction unless something has significantly changed or improved from the 2014 version
I see different steels listed...First batches 1055,then 1095 and now Site claims 1085..Must be the diff..I bought one when they came out, still never used it.Blueberry bluing to pretty.Darn work of art to admire and wipe..Must be the early ones for sale on Ebay for $100... When they discontinued, price went up $250,then market full again..Great thing about cold steel, when models discontinued, huge price hike.
I got my 1917 and...The handle is black from the oil. The leather sheath where it connects to the belt frog is crooked. And the blade is dull. I'm still waiting in a reply from Cold Steel. I haven't used it or shown it to anybody yet because it's not up to par! So far I have an expensive paperweight. I am part of the fringe minority it seems here. I plan on buying more knives from Cold Steel but we'll see how you handle my situation first. Thanks!
I bought mine unknowingly right around the time of the sale, same thing , total crap piece of junk to, worst finish I ever saw, crisscrossing millwork not buffed out, uneven dull grind that I cant get sharp, terrible rosewood handles, thing came in grease that smelled toxic and shitty, GSM wouldnt help me because I didnt buy it directly from cold steel, said I bought it an a dealer that was not authorized , I asked them for a list of authorized dealers and they couldnt provide that, great service, I dont expect them to be around much longer with the triad patent ending soon , they have zero customer service.
Of all the Cold Steel blades that I have, this would be my first reach in the middle of the night, if I hear strange sounds in my house. I have a Recon Tanto, but this baby here is what I will reach for for self defense in any situation, even if or especially against a bear or mountain lion in the woods. The only thing better would be a sword, which I have a few, but for home defense, this will be the blade that I grab, first. Nothing short of a broad sword will knock this blade back in your hand. It's got heft, but well balanced with a slight forward lean for chopping with. Most excellent!
I have this, excellent Bowie knife! The rosewood scales are nice, but Micarta or G10 grips would be ultimate for ergonomics. Either way great Big Blade.
Just ordered one. My only concern is hopefully the edge is nicer than what my drop forged bowie came with. That knife had an absolutely useless edge that was very rough i had to reprofie a brand new blade...
The Natchez Bowie is of a cable tang design ( which is surprisingly stout) and is made of 0-1 high carbon steel, the Frontier Bowie is of a full tang design and is made of 1095 Carbon steel. The Natchez Bowie 's fit and finish is actually quite nice and while being showpiece worthy is a great high-end production Bowie, the 1917 Frontier Bowie, is well built though it's finish is more utilitarian barring the blued steel finish on the knife. The 1917 Bowie feels a little heavier in design which changes the balance of the blade to feel a tiny bit more "nose heavy" this is by no means a "bad" thing as it IS a utilitarian Bowie knife and will aid in leverage for a good chopping motion seen in this video. The Natchez Bowie is a little more balanced towards your hand feeling just a bit more "lithe" in the hand, less useful for chopping but just about the sweet spot for slicing movements.
@@DasKrampusAirsoft do you own a proper bench stone already? Learning to sharpen knives can be frustrating because it takes a lot of finesse but if you practice on a cheap pocket folding knife for a while you'll get it 👍
Cold Steel actually offers free knife sharpening on all their products. You only pay $5 for shipping your blade. Says so right on their website. Great company.

Definitely a Bowie knife that can give Crocodile Dundee a run for his money. More like the American counterpart to it. My only complaint is that it doesn't come sharp out of the box, but work a little bit of magic with the sharpener and you got yourself a knife!
@Fight Fly Crow then you're in luck the only stamping on this blade is underneath the handle and it JUST says cold steel nothing else get one trust me they kick ass 😂

Only problem I had with the knife wasn't even with the knife, I've had it for about a year now and the adhesive holding the metal cap on the sheathe gave out so the cap fell off. Easy fix over all so easily my best knife and it has stayed that way over any and all competitors I've come across, in my opinion at least.
Okay, he says the knife is blued, in fact it is painted. There are video's on TH-cam showing how to strip the paint off the knife. I've a few Cold Steel knives and Tomahawks, and all the Hawks came with the same blue paint. I will soon have a Frontier Bowie knife, and I may strip the paint off, or at least buff it down too a matte finish. Way to shiny. Edit, I now own said knife and it is blued, as in Gun type bluing. I scratched the finish off of part of the knife, but I fixed it with some Birch Wood Casey Super Blue. I really like mine and the finish.
mine was dull could not cut anything i wish they sharpen there bowie better since its quite expensive the wild west bowie is sharper and has better steel and its cheaper and wheni look at the video my edge did not look like that
