I have had African violets for years. This year I started watering them with water I boiled eggs in. They just took off and bloomed profusely and grew fast. I use that water for all my plants when I have it. love your videos.

I saw something on pinterest on making a tea of egg shells and water and straining it after a week or so...a little coffee....a little banana maybe. Now Im not familiar enough with what these flowers specifically need....in fact I know nothing...LOL But you reminded me of that article. I tried it on other plants and it worked well.

The favorite nursery I worked at was a 20 acre a nursery growing African Violets. Every day was a treat as the colors we always changing as plants were sold and new plants started to flower. We had 20 different varieties that were sold regularly as well as small batches of specialty Violets. We had our own breading program and many of the varieties were patented. It is sad that the nursery went out of business because the owners decided they could make more money selling the land then continuing to produce plants.

I've been repotting my African violets using a wicking system where they end up sitting on top of a jar of water always. The single piece of yarn from the reservoir and up to about the middle of the potting soil, keeps them watered always and without compacting the soil. Works wonderfully. I learned it from watching the Gray Turtle African violet channel.

I do that too. I started doing that years before the Internet. Works great. I only use cotton yarn. Are you using acrylic? I was told that it wouldn't work. Perhaps it will.

This is funny...I always tell people that I killed all my indoor plants and can vouch for that in my 66 years...Because of covid19, we are not allowed to have indoor parties...one of my sister-in law gifted me an orchid for my birthday last year (2021)..It is still alive after 4 months, so I bought a total of 14 more orchid plants...I'm happy to say at this time Jan.2022, they are all surviving...

Nice instructable! Two tips to avoid leaf breakage, 1. wait until your AF is on the dry side, which makes the leaves a bit limp and less likely to snap off during transplanting. 2. Use a spoon in tight re-potting to place the soil beneath the leaves avoid too much of a mess. You can also use the spoon to tamp down the soil a bit, fingers can be clumsy! Happy Planting! 🌸🌱

An African Violet was the first houseplant that got me really interested. I didn't know anything about them when my father-in-law gave me one for Mother's Day. I tend to use a different system though. When I re-pot mine I press the outermost edge of soil down just a little bit lower than the plant. When I water it I just fill up the "moat" with water mixed with fertilizer. All but one of them stays in continous bloom. I love that you did a video on these!

I love African Violets. Mine are always blooming or producing new buds, so it's nice to always have flowers. I never knew they didn't like to stay wet. I've always just kept them in the plastic pots and set them in a fully glazed pot that I pour water into once a week so they are watered from the bottom. Good to also learn they like shallow pots. I really like that last pot your showed.

It isn't the water that burns the leave but direct light on the leave while it is wet. I bath my violets with a sprayer with warm water just make sure the plant is dry before putting it back in sun.

Connie taylor It depends on wind and humidity of your climate. I live in a very humid climate, and water tends to pool on the leaves for days, which increases the chance of bacterial growth(happens very often). So I avoid wetting their leaves :)

The "Wick Watering" process for African Violets is one style, I find helpful. Also VERY handy are plain plastic spoons to gently work around /or push down the soil under the AV leaves. Works great as opposed to my clumsy fingers. Bulb syringe watering IS MY GO-TO for watering my succulents @ AV. !!! Thnx for reading. My old fashioned style's work well.

I've been growing AVs for 30+ years. FOR WATERING: My mother in law (MIL) taught me to use the violet containers with the food and leave constant water in them. They bloom all the time and seam to like it real well, although once in a while i feel like some get too much water so I try to let them go dry just a bit before watering. I am interested in trying your method to compare it to my MIL's. Will let you know. TENTING NEW PLANTS: I agree with tenting - they love it. It's the way I make new plants: I cut a leaf, put it in a new pot, and put a clear plastic cup over it, with a hole drilled into the top. Keep the cup on until it get's well established or it may die. Be patient because it take a couple of months for new growth to show up. COLOR: I have grown a variety of colors and I especially love the ones that have multiple colors like Sunkissed which goes from yellow to pink and reminds me of sunrise. I have spent years hunting down and collecting unusual colors - will be happy to share pictures if your interested. GLOVES - I was surprised you were not wearing gloves because I have found that my plants not only don't like water, but they also don't like to be touched by me :(. Maybe my skin is just moist or something - I don't know. I just know they do better if i wear gloves, especially when transplanting. Thanks for the mold potting method - it will defiantly be using that!

Just wanted to let you know that you can get water on AV leaves, you just have to use room temperature water when you do water them. I fill up my watering can and let it sit out overnight. I love the self watering African violet pots. I don’t dump the water out after an hour, I put water in the outer pot, drop in several drops of liquid fertilizer, place in the pot with the plant, and leave it. I rinse it out and change the water every week or two (I live in so cal where it’s quite dry). My plants are super healthy and bloom plenty with a wonderful flower crown. And I don’t change the potting mix once a year. Maybe I should do it more frequently but my plant is happy so 🤷‍♀️.

Awesome! My sister had a beautiful African violet delivered to the hospital after my 1st child was born. Needless to say, the plant died within a few mos. 😂 I decided to give it another try w/ 2 plants a cpl yrs ago. I love the look of terra cotta as well & discovered on my own how much plants love them! Note: place a liner under terra cotta plates because mold will grow.

Great video, sometimes my African Violets start out as one and all of a sudden there is two growing side by side months later, not sure how that happens. Love your ideas

Hi Im from Australia and have just discovered yr feed. I am loving all of yr instructional vids'...
With violets we use a wick water system.
Placing the wick through the drain hole into water in the bottom of the support pot underneath.
Love yr work and thank you for all that you have shared. 💜🧡💚💛💙

I just got my first African violet a few weeks ago and he’s by far my favorite plant (shh don’t tell the others lol). I’m 22 but have had a green thumb since I was a kid. I have a bunch of houseplants from monsteras to burro tails but somehow had never owned an African violet. I know you aren’t supposed to touch the leaves a lot but the fuzziness is what sold me on this plant! It’s like an adorable fuzzy puppy lol. My guy is already putting out little bloom buds that definitely weren’t there when I got him. Ugh I’ve been totally just devouring any information I can get on these guys!

Mine have been gorgeous in the same small terra cotta planter for about 10 years. I'm ready for them to be big and gorgeous. I'm just a bit nervous to give them a new home because of how perfect they've been. I don't want to get greedy!

love this video, I will try the tenting and see how it goes. I also like the cleaning of the pots with a bleach solution. Since the pots are bacteria free I would not water the plants by filling the kitchen sink and soaking them there. The kitchen sink is a potential breeding ground for bacteria. thank you!

Violet pots are the absolute best. You do not drain the water out of the outer pot. The terra cotta inner pot absorbs the perfect amount of water for the plants. I like ones that hold a lot of water so I only need to check them once a month. There's a reason they are called African violet pots!

Great video and helpful tips! Thank you for sharing :) African violets are my favourite flowers and I have pots of them pretty much in every room of the apartment. They very often need repotting though because we have two cats that love to knock things over lol. Terracotta pots are always my first choice too. A huge mistake that I use to make when I first had violets was getting water on the leaves. After learning the DO's and DON'T's of caring for them they really do bloom beautifully 🌼🌺🌼🌺
