Throughout the series, it's not enough that everyone gives their all in a fight-- they also have to sacrifice. Erwin has to sacrifice his troops to achieve victory, the Warriors have to sacrifice their past allegiance with Eldia to complete their mission, and Eren has to sacrifice his mercy to gain freedom. Like in chess-- you have to sacrifice your pawns, bishops, knights, and other pieces in order to get a chance at striking the king-- you'll never win a match without losing anything.
Whether it's your limb, your life, or your humanity-- something's gotta go for you to fight.

The great karl fritz retreated. He didn't elect a small rumbling to demonstrate what would happen, only threatened it. He also placed his people on a land rich in fossil fuels, which Marley desires most.
That is why this is happening. Had these two things not occurred/been discovered there might have been hope for the world yet they decided to listen to one selfish country and shall be destroyed for it.

This storyline has really come to such a fascinating crossroad. Their efforts to attain the sort of freedom that would allow them to break free from the walls they were caged by is met with a devastating realisation. The realisation that there is no place on earth that they can truly be free no matter what walls they tear down as in humanity’s eyes they are the enemy.
I don’t blame Eren for abandoning his sense of humanity in the face of this. :/
