He was perhaps the most manly and inspiring leader, but was also flawed. He can't really be called the most honorable, but that realism is part of why he's such an amazing character.
He wasnt honourable, he said his intentions were to find the secrets about the walls all along, and he led so many to their deaths because of it, but he was inspiring as hell

Commander Erwin Smith is a monster in terms of observation, he saw the big picture at play in the series. In season 1 itself, everyone was terrified to fight even a titan and he not only captured a intelligent titan twice and also played a big part in unravelling the titan history and the conspiracy at play. He will go to any length to accomplish his objective. This is what makes him a true monster.

Probably most of you guys didn't notice, but Erwin Smith is not only a great leader but a hell of strong soldier as well that he could cut Riener's armoured thumb. Shame the show didn't give him more opportunities to show that clearly.
Ofc he was also freakishly strong.
Dude had his arm ripped off, told everyone to keep going, and still managed to rescue Eren. I'd say the show made it clear.

People always go on about how Armin isn't a worthy successor to Erwin but I believe that's all together the incorrect way to look at it. If anyone is the successor to Erwin it's
DOUBLE ANGREI SPOILERS
Eren. The dude has turned into a monster just like Erwin did in order to reach his goals. If Armin is the successor to any character I'd say it's Pixis. Eren/Erwin become monsters to reach their goals. Armin/Pixis stubbornly persist to the very last moment of every last second of every last molecule. The refuse to turn into monsters but instead push their humanity to the limit.
The last few chapters of the manga (it's 130 when I'm writting) show this perfectly.
SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
Arwin is shot almost to death, yet kept fighting and moving on, trying his hardest not to kill his former comrades until the last possible second. Meanwhile we have Eren starting his genocide and showing how far ahead he planned everything, whatever his true goal may be. Seriously, I get shivers with how great the chapters have been now that we are on the way to the ending.

I prefer a ruthless commander like erwin more as a character but i also like armin as a commander
True, makes me wonder which side Erwin would be on if he was still alive, Yeah Erwin did become a monster so to say for the greater "good" Like Eren but Armin isn't too far off o being just as terrible. I mean, the guy has killed hundreds of innocent people for similar reasons
@@blurryink115 Yes, but also no. Armin got volunteers killed and while Erwin did too, he was definitely not as against using innocents as bait. Armin successfully guessed who the female Titan was but it was Erwin who came up with the plan to capture her. Armin was definitely not 100% up for that plan; hell even Mikasa wasn't really for it but it could be argued that was because it put Eren in direct danger.
I understand his death, but damn, it felt like a disservice to have such an amazing character taken out before the ending arc.
If Erwin was alive Eren wouldn't be the most terrified character in the serie

This is one of the most admirable characters in the series. But he was haunted by the souls of all the soldiers he led to death. Imagine waking up from death just to realize that Levi failed and the sacrifice was in vain, Hange said it, that would create no more than a demon.
