I also like how Silco positions himself to the left side of the boy, so that he looks at his good eye instead of his nasty one. And he grabs the knife because when he was being drowned by Vander, he used his knife to get free. So he expects the boy to try and do the same, but only _after_ the boy calls them monsters. He was perfectly fine with the boy being able to defend himself before that.
It just occurred to me that this scene foreshadows Silco's relationship with Jinx. He's testing this blond kid, searching for a protege. The kid fails to meet his hopes, unable to see what he sees, and becomes a crude prototype sacrificed for progress. This is why Silco takes Powder in so readily, something which seemed abrupt to me before, but now makes more sense. He wants a child of his own to give the future to, and Jinx is his perfect success.
He took Powder because he felt pity for her. But why? Because he felt that he understood the sentiment of "betrayal," of abandonment that she's feeling, when Powder said: *"She left me, she is not my sister anymore."* In Powder's POV, Vi left her bc she never saw Vi trying to return for her. From Powder's POV you couldn't see where Vi was hidding in that alley, you could only see a black alley, so, of course she thought Vi left her for good, bceause she caused the death of their family (unintentionally tho.) Vi smacks her in the face, calls her a Jinx for it and leaves her. From Vi's POV she was still able to see Powder from where she was. Earlier when Silco saw Vi fighting with Vander's gloves, he saw how much in common Vi had with Vander, later when he met a crying, broken, lonely Powder, that had being "abandon" by her own sister. He saw how much in common Powder had with him just like he was betrayed and abandoned by Vander, a man that he thought was his brother.... The main reason why he took Powder was because he saw himself reflected in Powder. *Sorry for my bad english, it's not my native language*
Deckard imitates his mannerisms at first when he confronts Vi and the others, and they both use knives as their weapons, implying to me that the kid was something of a protege, yeah.
Thanks for the analysis. The parallels between Silco and the shark really struck me in this scene: the profile shots of Silco against the blue expanse of the water, the way he moves in a graceful, predatory way, circling his prey... I didn't feel him throwing away the knife released the tension, only escalated it further, as it proved that Silco didn't need it to control and intimidate the poor guy.
That shark really had it´s purpose, because it screams "predator" and then it´s projected onto Silco at how he walks and holds himself so you automatically think of him as "predator", too :D gods, I love watching Silco, because he´s so deliberate in (almost) everything and he knows how to choose his words so you get roped in xD
It's not just a shot from inside a cage, it is a shot from inside the cage of the mouse who becomes a monster. The shot emphasizes Silco's intention, and foreshadows Deckard's fate. He's not just trapped, he's already doomed to a fate worse than death.
It should be noted that the glass box with the blood stains on it was from the previous episode when the rat killed the cat. It cuts to that shot as the blonde guy says "it'll kill me", as the camera reminds us of what shimmer can do.
Damn I just found this when I was browsing and it didn't disappoint! Silco is one of my fave characters in Arcane (second only to Jinx) and this video was so cool to watch
Please do more! I've been waiting for videos that take a closer look at the editing, themes and just film making as a whole in Arcane. Because the series is full of great little details that I don't see a lot of people talk about.
I interpreted Silco throwing the knife as him showing the kid what true power is. He takes the knife pondering it making him remember what power really is, knives are an easy way to get power and people to fear you and Silco throwing it aside and proceeding to talk about power is a way to show what he thinks of power and the real way to achieve it.
When you think about how much time and effort went into every single shot, every image, background, animation, text and so on. It's crazy! No wonder it took them years to complete Arcane. Arcane is full of detail, careful thoughts and heart. Every scene is important and in every scene, there are secrets and details to discover.
I really loved how they edited this show and I was hoping people would go more in depth with it. Thank god I found this in my recommended! Very well put analysis!
Loved this analysis, great to see how much attention and detail went into the smallest of things :) I am in love with how the characters express themselves on this show from their tone to body language to their micro expressions :)
very cool breakdown, thank you! and yeah if ur up to it, id watch more analysis videos. (on any aspect of the show, not just this part of the editing. its all interesting)
I wouldn't have been surprised to see a library of videos going back years doing this sort of analysis on a range of other stuff. Kickass video. Subbed, looking forward to seeing more!
I watched a lot of videos about arcane, and it's just incredible for how many factors were analyzed, character design, animation, editing, storytelling, lore, psychological tricks, facial expressions, music, relationships, foreshadowing, choreography, and this is just the tip of the iceberg, the number of people who made analyzes on all these different aspects of the series, and the number of people who watched them, once again confirms the fact that this series is perfectly worked out in everything, this is the best series that has ever existed
Deckard and Silco`s weapons are not knives. They are Zaunite daggers. They just look like knives from a distance but the steel and grips are totally different from those of a knife!
i Believe that the shot from inside the cage is just rappresentative that the guy knows exactly what the shimmer does, reaffirmed in his instant refuse to take it. He evidently knows what it is
I'm so impressed by this thorough analysis! I don't know a lot about editing, so it was really cool to learn these things! I'd love to see more videos from you. :3
This is a really good analysis! I was surprised to see it didn’t have very many views. If I can offer a slight critique on your commentary though, you might wanna edit out any “um”s or pauses to make your points flow a bit more cleanly. If you didn’t use a script, that may also help to reduce the pauses. Just a critique, do with it what you will, but I hope to see more content from you!
A shark with a bad eye lol, yeah the sharks in this scene are absolutely the reason why jinxs rocket launcher is a shark. It was a gift for silco, made after animals he idolizes.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you there - Silco isn't talking about himself in the part where he's lookong at the fish, he's talking about the people of Zaun in general. The Pilties see them as monsters, when they even see them at all.
Most likely way to much reading into such minor details not meaning as much. Its like poem interpretations of whoever. If they say the grass is green, they probably mean the grass is green, not an Essay about the meaning of the colour green.
Fundamental difference between reading ( using imagination) and interpreting editing choices alongside painfully hand animated features. You can misinterpret or bring your own view onto a “poem”. That’s the point. You can’t when it comes to something this deliberate and loaded with meaning. By that logic you are saying they could just make the entire show in shot/ reverse shot with close ups and it would have the exact same emotional impact. Editing is a understated part of T.V, and it’s value cannot be translated to reading. Keep in open mind and you’ll be surprised.
That fish 'monster' looks like a dunkleosteus.
It is a version of dunkleosteus. Probably more fantastical than it's real counterpart.
This sounds like how ali a pronounces diplodocus

Wow! That makes a lot of sense and it's something that I didn't think about while making the video.

@@cprw10 Exactly! Of course he ended up loving her for herself, in all the way that she isn't like him as well.

This review blew my mind a little, just goes to show how much of a masterpiece Arcane truly is

We def need more vid like this.
This is amazing how on earth did you pick these up?? HAHA please do more man this is dope
Well done. I enjoyed your analysis. Editing was my favorite part of film school. Arcane is a masterpiece, no doubt.
i am for sure waiting for more of your videos
Bruh, considering how well done was your video. I was expecting more videos and more subcribers on your channel.
Bro I had no idea how much editing matters in shows. But I do now omg
Just got here. I hope you decide to do more videos on editing because it really is a topic that doesn’t get discussed much.
wait this is actually very informative and cool and i'd actually watch more of these! very nice, hope you get a good grade on this bub :D
Yes definitely do more analysis videos like this! This was super interesting! Really shows just how much meticulous care went into making this show.
Subscribed! Loved the breakdown and can’t wait for more!
No way this is your first video youre like a professional reviewer

God I love this video. AND the comment section.
Big brain stuff! Thanks for digging into Arcane's ludicrous cinematography and editing, show is insaaaaane

Arcane is so good it brung a new you tuber! And one with talent

it's a dunkleoteus
Great Work!
Yeah please more analysis videos on arcane 🤩👍
Excellent! I learned a lot, thanks!
WOW It was Awesome
4:43 "Which is basically like steroids times 10, but it kind of kills you."
.... So, steroids?
No steroids times 10
Yeah, editing is part of this, but more than anything this is an analysis of _blocking_ and _photography_ more so than editing.
Nice work!
pls pls pls do another one :D no pressure though
so this is where my fear of silco came from
