SRAM ones use 3 small screws to secure the dm chainring. Its a good idea to either grease the ring/arm interface (as Doddy did here) or better still, use some press fit BB securing compound on that interface, to prevent creaks. Also, on SRAM, use blue locktite on the 3 screws threads
Hey Doddy, would it be better to start threading the lock ring by hand and not on the vice? It just seems starting threads with tool in vice like that may increase the chance of cross threading your expensive crank arm. However, great vid like always and great tip regarding carbon friendly grease.👍
I used to work at zero Motorcycle Factory you'd be surprised how easy that is we got women (literally 5foot 4 inches)doing that takes some muscle but a lot of Leverage
If you don't have a torque wrench you may always get into the correct ballpark using basic calculations. You take the torque in Nm, divide it by 10 and then by the lever length in meters. In this particular case (40/10)/0.170 = 23.5 for 170 mm cranks. Then you know that if you tighten by pulling the crank arm at its end you have to pull with a force like if you were lifting 23.5 kg weight.
Doddy you are reading my mind. Quick question: I'm going from a 32T round chainring to a 32T absolute black oval chainring. Does the length of the chain change?
I just replaced my crankset and bb with the Chinese make ixf they seem like a good crankset stiffer than my old deore set hopefully they will last me a year bargain at £49:60 they come in Awsome anodised colours too what’s not to like
If you had a really worn chain, then that might have worn out the chainring(s) too, so that's a good time to check. Otherwise you have to replace them very rarely. They usually last several years.
I’m trying to replace one of these from my folding bike but I can’t remove it from the bike at all. I’ve taken the nut out of the pedal bar etc but it won’t come off the bike.
Does raceface straight-up not let you demonstrate on anybody else's products it would be cool to see a side-by-side of all the popular versions of direct mount
Hello Doddy and community. Can I use XT crank arms 12 speed as a replacement on a 10 speed Deore bike? Same BB type on both and was going to put my 32t chainring on it also as both are direct mount. Help greatly appreciated 👍
#askgmbntech Hey Doddy I got a troubleshooting question. I decided to convert to a tubeless setup with my new bike. The thing is I can’t for the life of me put the tyre on the rim. I tried using tyre levers but although I got the tyre to go in the rim, I tore the tubeless tape. Please help me!
#askgmbn - There's so much focus on weight of components on bikes. It would be interesting to know how the bike/riding is affected based on where the weight is located. I've read about each of these individually, so I thought a comprehensive video covering all of these might be a great topic for you to cover (including why more or less weight on each makes the differences). Weights of... Bike Frame (including components attached not listed), Rider, Wheels and Tires, Pedals and Cranks
Technically, yes. Possibly not. But that depends on how much slack you have at the moment. Your chain could be a link or 2 too long without a problem. And in that case you wouldn't have to.
#3:50 "on Blake's bike" I know video sake but isn't he wise enough to do it himself why's he making you if you have over 5 bikes you could have serviced instead
Sorry, I don't think I can agree with that. I remember fighting with seized chainring bolts, especially the traditional ones with shallow flat grooves on one side for a tool to prevent spinning before coming loose but would 1 out 5 would just slip. Then you had the bolts that would corrode together and end up snapping off when trying to remove them or even tighten, I can still remember the smell of a popped aluminum bolt. The 5 bolt design also limited how small the ring can be and the extra crank material for the bolt spider didn't help with weight savings.
Excellent overview on a topic that looks simple on the surface but with not so obvious details that will drive even the best plan off the tracks.

Doddy's got Popeye arms to torque to 40Nm freehand.

Do you need to shorten the chain if you downsize your chainring from 32t to 30t?

Or you could just buy a torque wrench.

Doesn't change the lenght of the chain, just check if you have the clearance for what should be 34-36T. The maximum diameter of ovals is bigger.
How about the offset?
What grease do you use? Can I use Comma multi purpose grease?

Hey GMBN, great vid as always, maybe one stupid question: how often should one change the chainring? Maybe I missed this bit in the video?
If you had a really worn chain, then that might have worn out the chainring(s) too, so that's a good time to check.
Otherwise you have to replace them very rarely. They usually last several years.
Can the BB tool be replaced by a cassette removal tool? I think they look kinda' same. thanks
Putting grease on threads changes the torque of the fastener

My son has a norco storm and he wants to change the 3 gear in the front to 1 sprocket…is this possible
Can I fit 24 teeth chainring on my single speed hardtail
Hi, i just need to replace the ecrank of my 2020 turbo levo, but cant find 160mm praxis. Which other brands can be fix on that turbo levo?
Do 3x come in direct mount???

Is it just me, or does the Shimano M9100 left crank keep loosening slowly, no matter how hard you tighten it and tighten the preload dial?
Hi from the beautiful island of Curazao, love the channel. Asking again here. What is the chainring offset about? Thanks fellow DJ. #askgmbntech

Wish i could afford to go from square taper to this.....
#askgmbntech do i need to add links to my chain if i go from 30 to 32 teeth chainring?

I'm living in matrix.... just yesterday wrote my bike mechanic about replacing chainring...
Yeezys
a hundred new standards, such a useless evolution on cranks. i think the industry didn't like to give aftermarket chainrings a slice of the pie. :(

It was so easy to change the 5 bolt ones. Bikes are becoming aircrafts.

Most of them are way over torque from the factory
This video is awful, half of it is useless then no mention of how to get the crank off
First like 😄

Never at bigining tighten bolt like that thats so s... how you did it. Do with tool i hand and hand tighten it. So s.....
