    Hey Paul. I’m watching this video while standing in a LONG line (already one hour) at Guayaquil airport, just to pay a $20 tax of some sort. Am traveling around Ecuador for seven weeks this summer and am now heading to the Galápagos Islands. I seem able to communicate my needs and understand better than last year in Colombia but I’m well aware that I’m not speaking correctly, grammar-wise. Your videos are so helpful. I’ll have to watch this one again when I’m somewhere that I can take notes. Thanks for your help in making me able to travel solo in South America and converse with people along the way. ~ Janet

      @jackbussy3133 that’s most interesting! Now I get why I don’t feel much difficulties with learning such things in Spanish 🤷‍♀️ As a non-native English nor French speaker (German mother tongue) way back then half a century ago at school I took some classes for about 3 years learning the basics of the French language but without practicing after school lost the ability of speaking. Nevertheless it’s still sitting in the back of my mind partly saying “hello” when starting with Spanish some years ago. I never thought about the similarities between French and Spanish while sounding so different. Thanks for opening my eyes !

      @@anneli1735 They're very similar. The more I study Spanish, the more I realize that. Much closer than italian ! In my study group where I am the only Frenchman, I feel guilty because I understand many idioms because they just are the litteral translation.

Huge a-ha! to learn it’s actually the word before the “a” and not the one after. I’ve been following your channel since the beginning of the year and happy to see it growing quickly. Your videos are awesome and have really helped me to speak with more confidence. I love learning your “formulas” along with the grammar rules. Hi Paul. I love this video and having a system to know which verbs use which prepositions. One question. In the sentence, “Juan se dedica a enseñar a niños a tocar el piano,” isn’t a “les” (enseñarles”) needed as “niños” is the indirect object. Juan is teaching “to play the piano” to the niños. I really appreciate your videos. They are very well thought out, concise and useful. Jim

    • @QrooSpanish
      @QrooSpanish  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Jim. Niños is the indirect object but the redundant LES is not needed here. It might help to put the phrase "se dedica a enseñar" in quotes in Google so you can see examples from Spanish speaking sites. I took the liberty of doing it for you. Check it out: tinyurl.com/yc384fnc

      Paul, Thank you. I did and understand it better. I learned Spanish back in 1970, and somewhere I remember the indirect object always needs the redundant “le.” However, I see now that is not the case. I hope you have a wonderful day.

    Hi Paul, just in case you are interested. In spanish "Venir a infinitive" has got another meaning apart from the literal one (movement sense). With verbs such as "decir", "sugerir", "dejar caer" (hint) it is ambiguous semantically . Take this sentence for example "Vino a decirme que estaba interesado en la compra". Without a context it can mean two things: 1) He came to tell me he was interested in the purchase. 2) Subtext (Although he did not say it explicitly) I understood he was interested in the purchase.
    1st rate lessons! Keep up the good work!

    Hi, thanks for another great lesson. I'm not clear about the verb 'atender' ....does it get paired with the preposition 'a'? I tried putting a few examples into DeepL. Some of the examples used 'a', and some didn't. Or it came back with another verb such as 'ocuparse',

    • @QrooSpanish
      @QrooSpanish  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sometimes it is paired with a and sometimes it is not. When we are talking about attending to people, the "a" can be interpreted as a personal a. When attending to matters, you sometimes see the a. Personally, I don't use this for attending to things, I prefer ocuparse de.

I showed up for my office hour every friday...never late. Las Latinas in the class and the German teacher, who I also would beg to read to me in French, said I was in love with the teacher and that is why I had to have an office hour with her. A math teacher next to her would knock on her door when she did show up for our hour together to come in and stand over me glaring to ask are you alright? Finally nearly 500 Dollars into the whole thing she told me "I had two weeks of that old script 20 years ago. I have not seen it every again. I can not figure out how you read it nor why one would want to read It.". I told her 'German does not taste the same in the Latinic Script.". She was shocked "Taste!' she Saïd. @@josedelnegro46German mother tongue here: Whatever your mother tongue is first of all get ready to be really fluent in German for being able and getting used to reading German books. Until this point you’ll be forced to do it in latin letters as already by order of 1941 the use of old German script (Sütterlinschrift, Kurrentschrift) had been changed to latin. Therefore there’s nothing available on the market anymore to learn German otherwise. After you might be lucky to find some old books printed before that date on flea markets in Germany to read. The German population born after WW II wouldn’t be able to read (not to speak of writing!) those books anymore. Myself still had the opportunity to learn the old German script voluntarily at school in the mid sixties growing up with old books available at home to practice reading. I chose to learn for being able to read my heritage like old family letters and books. Don’t know what’s on your mind now 🤷‍♀️

    Im hearing you suggest in adding these words to your word list. When did you begin suggesting this? Ive never heard you say that and I’m curious how far I should go back.

      I often suggest that people keep a list of useful words and phrases to study by. What you choose to include on the lost depends on what you consider useful.

    I have a question. Is del + infinitive used similar to al + infinitive? Like could you say "del empezar..." to mean "from the beginning..."

    Hola Paul,
    Tengo una pregunta. De vez en cuando escucho el uso de la preposición “a” usado asi en esta frase: “Le voy a comprar un carro a mi novia” Español no es mi primer idioma y esta construcción me suena raro. Could you explain why “a” is used instead of “para” here? Thanks! I love your videos, I am really learning a lot.

    • @QrooSpanish
      @QrooSpanish  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "Le voy a comprar un carro a mi novia” can be a confusing construction because it can have two meanings:
      I'm going to buy my girlfriend a car.
      I'm going to buy a car from my girlfriend.
      To be clearer, you can say: Voy a comprar un carro para mi novia.
      In Spanish, the LE normally means "to someone, something" but sometimes it can mean from, like in that second example. But that wasn't your question. The reason it is A mi novia is because she is affected by buying the car. It is like a gift that you give TO someone.
      This video may clear it up: th-cam.com/video/WcsP3zHr6y0/w-d-xo.html

    Hey Qroo. Why is it "Puedo hacerte una pregunta" but not the verb preguntar?

    • @kcorpora1
      @kcorpora1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In spanish they think it is redundant to use "preguntar una pregunta" together.
      So they use "hacer" to make you a question. "puedo hacerte una pregunta?" can I make you a question?

    The key is that whatever preposition you use it will be wrong, so just use para, por, a etc randomly.

    This is really clumsy approach and it would have never worked when I was learning Spanish. Better to just Google perifrases verbales Spanish. Then read something like Selectiones and see how many you can find used in context.
