- If you're planning a hike on Scotland's West Highland Way, here are some tips and things you should know, including talk about the weather, that stretch along Loch Lomond, and more.
I'm an American and a solo woman hiker who walked the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William. This is a beautiful trail, and safe to do for solo hikers. It was much more 'civilized' than I'm accustomed to on my hiking and backpacking trips! This was my first trip to Scotland.
Things you need:
Guidebook: amzn.to/3rBZCeo (The maps in the book are GREAT!)
Map: amzn.to/3MduTOe (The trail is well marked but a 'real' map is great for planning and checking distances)

Yay - enjoy your adventure!
Hi watched your series on the WHW and found it very informative and helpful, we completed our walk in eight days at the beginning of April this year, we carried our rucksacks wild camped two nights the rest in pods which is a great option.
There were several times my wife and I had thoughts of giving up as neither of us are spring chickens but the wonderful people we met along the way giving us encouragement to continue helped us to finish.
Loved the experience and yes some parts were tough but just added to the sense of achievement reaching Fort William.
Would do it again but with better rucksacks.
We watched lots of videos before and yours was great.
I'm so happy you liked the videos and YOU DID IT! There are some great people out there, and what a wonderful experience!
You elaborated and filmed this so professionally! Absolutely gorgeous work my friend! 🔥🔥
Great advice. Just subscribed. Best wishes to you on future adventures and for 2024.
I'm going on Saturday! Great timing!
Have a GREAT time!
@@SomeBoldAdventure Thank you!
Ty I’m hoping to do this walk-in 25 .you shared a lot of great info.I definitely know I can do it ,be 75 then 👍😇🇺🇸
This video has really convinced I can do this alone, even aged nearly 80
You've done the Camino before so this should be easy in comparison!
It's beautiful. Question how far off the trail do you have to walk to use nature as a bathroom?
Well, I suppose it depends on where you are, what kind of business you're doing, and how much you like privacy:) Many parts are wooded, so it's not an issue. More populated areas have cafes so you have access to a toilet - use them when you can! For Rannoch Moor and some of the more open areas - you're not going to find anywhere for privacy. Then you have to either hold it or accept the lack of privacy😂
Is the whole trail well marked?
Yes, it's very clear where to go. It's a popular trail, and it's either marked or the trail is worn enough that's is very obvious where to go. I also bought a guide book I really liked that had very clear maps and instructions: amzn.to/3tcaSCK
Did you complete the entire trail?
Yes, Milngavie to Fort William. Here's the playlist with all the videos from the trail: th-cam.com/play/PLNITlMUVFH4H_TMtUVvAOfYB1-gmZaOb1.html
The wisest advice I got from James of West High Land Way. DO NOT ACT AS A HERO. Just because others do Whole West Highland way or hike it inside 3- 5 days YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO THAT. What comes to Loch Lomond and Conic Hill my friends have warned me not to walk on it on rainy seasons. I KNOW THERE ARE LOT of you who EARN YOUR LIVING OF TOURISM. That's why you lie this unwell mainted hike is safe WHICH IS NOT SAFE.. LET EVERYONE MAKE their own decions. Use your brains and not be lambs.
I think everyone should hike within their abilities, especially when it comes to safety. For the record, I do not make a living off tourism (I have a 'real' job😂) and there are no lies here. As I said, I found the Loch Lomond section to be the most difficult, and rain certainly makes it even more difficult. The trail is well maintained, but parts of it are rock and there's only so much you can do to maintain rock! Nothing is without risk and everyone should make their own decisions, especially about safety.

Ha ha - right?!? That is a thing to know about the WHW, though they weren't too bad when I was there.
