Miranda is right. I dated the short, fat, and broke guys. I was still mistreated, verbally abused, used financially, and cheated on. I went to therapy and also started setting boundaries and raising my standards after that. Now I’m engaged.
Congratulations 🎉! I was the same. I got married to the RIGHT man for me after all of that. We just celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary. I wish many blessings and happiness for your marriage!!!
It's actually unhinged how many minutes off the top of the pilot were devoted these characters we will never see again and not the ACTUAL main characters of the show.
I think it brilliantly set up the premise. It draws u in immediately and hooks you. Because we've all either experienced it for ourselves or know someone who has 😂
It's a pilot episode, so it is designed to tee up what the rest of the show is going to be about, which is what those one-off characters were there for.
I love Samantha because she really does have a strong sense of sisterhood, I personally feel like she’s the actual glue of the friendship in this series. Like if you ever watched the movies you’ll see how much she actually prefers to be with her friends more than her boyfriends.
Not to spoil the show but my favourite quote from it is literally what you're saying about equating friendships to meaningful relationships at one stage Charlotte says that maybe they are soul mates and the guys are just people they can have fun with and it's so beautiful💕💕
Yes, or the last quote of the series when Carrie is talking in the narrator view: "The most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you find someone to love the you you love, well, that's just fabulous."
THIS is why I've always hated the ending with a passion! Why couldn't carrie have been single and happy with her friends instead of ultimately hooking up with some jerk who's put her thru all the ish she's gone thru!?!? It was such a cop out! I still get mad when I re watch the show. 😡
There is actually a famous quote about friends being your soulmates! “Maybe we can be each other’s soul mates and then we can let men be just these great, nice guys to have fun with.” The way I love my friends and get so much joy from those platonic relationship is unmatched. I would never give that up even it meant being alone romantically. It's so fulfilling!
The whole "expectations" and "settling" thing... I always think of this anecdote from Jonathan from Cinema Therapy. He had a client who came in complaining that he couldn't find a woman that he wanted to date and that his friends all thought his standards were too high but he disagreed. Jonathan had him write out the list of traits he wanted in a woman. Smart, sexy, confident, etc. Then Jonathan said to the client, "Okay, there definitely are women like this in the world. But imagine one of the women who ticks all these boxes. What would HER list of standards for a partner look like?" It finally clicked for the guy then. Apparently after he continued with therapy, he was able to improve himself more and hone in on the traits that were most important to him in a partner, and got to a more reasonable match of expectations. I try to remind myself of that - I know I'm a catch, but I still have things I need to work on, and I should be looking for similar partners, not perfect ones.
I could never watch this show because Carrie is so annoying. Someone could be dying in a hospital and she'd find a way to make it about herself and her failing relationship with an emotionally unavailable man
Yeah, she's absolutely selfish and immature, and Big is a neglectful narcissist. I say they both deserve each other, but it's so painful to watch them. I just finished a 3,5 hour analysis of their relationship and it's such a trainwreck that I'm grateful that I'm Single.
The thing you have to remember with these shows is they are specifically addressing the opinions of that time. Opinions pushed by the media. The point of the show is to explore this. Its not trying to push a message.
As someone with BPD(I was diagnosed at 13 which is very uncommon) the first time i ever watched the show at 18 I wholeheartedly believed that Carrie had undiagnosed BPD, Im now 25 and rewatching for the 3rd time and still stand 100% in my thoughts. The way she treats others, the self sabotaging, and fake apologizing when her friends prove that her way wasn't the right way, the constant guilt tripping of others when they don't do something for her or they don't respond the way she expects. The biggest sign is her relationship with Big, constantly going back to someone who makes it clear they barely like you simply bc she'd rather have someone lust after her instead of being alone. The abandonment issues and need to be with someone at all times like going to Aidan when Big was in Paris and California or sleeping with every man she met to fill the hole that would be left every time she was single. Her character shows how untreated BPD can greatly affect not just the person with the illness but also everyone in their life from friends, to sexual partners, hell even coworkers. Especially the episode where she vehemently denies therapy and talks about how its for crazy people and not her meanwhile she starts sounding like a 'crazy person'.
11:52 yes in like one of the last seasons at which point they’ve all been through it, they are talking about “soulmates” and Charlotte of all people looks at all of them and says “what if we can be each other’s soulmates? And men can just be a bonus, nice guys to have fun with.” Like yeah romantic love is great but if I would ever think someone was my other half it would be one of my besties. And I think having fulfilling platonic relationships has a carryover effect to improving romantic relationships because we shouldn’t be dependent upon our partners to meet _all_ of our emotional needs. PSA: Foster and nurture your platonic friendships people! It’s one of the keys to life.
11:55 yes, they do - many times throughout the show actually. Don’t get me wrong SATC very much explores dating and relationships but it is highlighted how important these friendships are.
It's crazy how much this show tried to portray itself as feminist but was just about a desperate woman chasing after an emotionally unavailable man for 6 seasons
Mmm not really. I think Carrie was the only character who did that. Miranda and Samantha ended up having great character arcs with their partners where they were the emotionally unavailable ones who ultimately opened up and entered into long-term caring and loving relationships. (I'm speaking about the OG series specifically.)
Finally someone reacts to this, and I get to experience it through someone else's eyes. It gets so much better after the first season. Season 3 starts the best years.
I'm watching it. On season 3 and I loved how progressive it was for it's time! From genders to sexuality to dating... it's crazy how they predicted the future. But carrie is infuriating.. I'm happy that SJP said she and carrie wouldn't be friends because I love SJP. But my favorite characters are Samantha, then Miranda, then stanford
Welcome to the club! I’m still going through my second round of bingeing SATC. Watching the show as a 13 year old vs 24 year old is very eye opening😅😅😅

The Linda Fiorentino reference, she is an actress and they were referencing a movie she did in the early 90s called The Last Seduction. She was a femme fatale, good crime thriller
I would just like to say, I just happened upon this video, and just a few minutes into the video, I’m absolutely loving you, you’re personality, and everything you have to say. You are just absolutely fantastic. Never change and keep on being the queen that you are!!!!!!
I am SO HERE for this! Newish subscriber here (your Awkward reviews found me a while back). Its so entertaining to me how this show can be so relevant and completely outdated at the same time. Cant wait to hear your inputs, i hope you contine with the whole series 😊
The entire concept of 'settling' is a con because it assumes you have to pick someone. So many are thrilled to live on their own, so one would have to be really, really, really thrilled about someone to give that up. Women's lives without partners is a HIGH bar to get over, guys.
It's been a VERY long time since I saw the pilot (1998, to be exact). It's just occurred to me, watching this, that Carrie went from obsessing over one guy to immediately obsessing over Big.
Waiting for the next episode of this, I actually nether watched this show fully, just maybe 3-4 episodes of the first season and it’s crazy boring and stupid to watch in this day and age, I’m 32 btw. Girl I’m ready to watch this with you, your reactions and comments much more entertaining than the show itself 👍 subscribed
Girlie, I’m also watching it for the first time, and it’s a jump scare. They treat being 30 like it’s the plague, the poor life choices (and not in the fun way), how their lives and friendship revolve around dating, and treat being single like it’s a terminal illness. I’m so over it I can’t get past the 3rd episode. Every episode is a massive ick
oh i'm so excited for the video essay!! spoiler alert none of the complaints you had are gonna get better throughout the series if anything it gets worse 😭
I was 20 when this show came out and my friends and I ate it up. It makes me cringe now to think that we completely identified with these characters and their situations back then, and all of us wanted to be a “Carrie” and find our “Big.” Maturing is realizing that Big and Carrie’s relationship was toxic and exhausting not complicated and romantic, and that Carrie was incredibly self-absorbed and a terrible friend. And that Samantha was the real girl’s girl.
One of my fav shows I've watched all season + movies twice and just recently watched "And Just Like That" which continues the show with the 3 of them (minus Samantha) and follows their women in their 50's. Please continue watching! I know it is problematic and Carrie is annoying af ngl but so good! Can't wait for an essay!💜
Your commentary about smoking in restaurants was HILARIOUS… it was definitely wild times. Restaurants, airplanes, HOSPITALS, u could smoke literally everywhere. Signed Auntie born in 1981 😆😆
They were talking about Linda Fiorentino in _The Last Seduction,_ a kind of film noir movie. She was also in _Men in Black_ and other stuff. Just regular movies.
I am very proud to say that I have never watched an episode of sex in the city. I once caught about five minutes and the characters and what they were talking about was so off putting that it only further confirmed I was not ever going to watch it. It’s so stupid to think that these supposedly successful women are obsessed with men and dating / marriage etc to the point of hysteria. The types of relationships they portray are so deeply unhealthy and unbalanced. Nope. So many red flags.
I used to sneak and watch this show when it first came out with the volume on 3 😅 when I got older I would sneak off to Manhattan on Fridays nights with my girlfriends! Good times in the early 2000s in NYC!
As much as I love a video essay, I liked watching this video with the show playing because lord knows it's been decades since I've seen this unhinged mess and I refuse to go back and watch it myself lmao so I had forgotten most of these plots points and this show really deserves to have every insane storyline analyzed lmao
I agree with perfect person! The “perfect” person cannot exist, I personally believe that the best qualities in a person is someone who is willing to try/ grow with Or without me. The best thing we can do Is figure out what type of people we want in our lives especially with a romantic connection. Which is different for everyone !
Hello, Sex and the City is a great show and it’s about friendships and relationships. Yes it does come up in season 4, I won’t say who says it but they say “Don’t laugh, how about we be each other soulmates and the guys can be just great guys that come along”
nah gurl! soul mates are essentially how you described. there is no true "right feeling" as often strong feelings in he beginning can be indicative of your own trauma responsss being triggered in unlnown ways. youre so right: love is and only ever has been in action, actions of respect, compassion, kindness, care, etc. it isnt love if it lacks these things ultimately and ALL of love demands consistent effort- even if that effort becomes unknown via habit (: . our cultures have done a great job at selling the idea of love for corporate interests but sadly in doing so theyve misled and manipulated the masses as to what love actually is. now people will claim the love an abuser gives is "love" simply because the word is used. woof
The first two seasons were definitely on the more experimental side of things. I think they wanted to have lots of characters in order to present as many sexual situations as possible. Then they realised having the four main characters be the ones in all these situations was enough. That’s one criticism people have that I hate - they slut shame and say these women will just sleep with anyone. But I think the whole point was to show all types of things that can happen on your dating journey. It was more hypothetical than anything. And it was revolutionary.
I'm watching it for the first time and 25 and it's worth it. I think the show does teach you a lot of lessons. I'm on season 6. Big did not want that woman but she chased him and he eventually gave in.
I find it interesting young women’s take of this show, versus gen x & older mil’s. I notice this with a lot of shows. When Gen z do watches for the first time. I will say I sometime think my agemates are a little over analytical of shows & movies from the past. I’m 26 as well, and I agree with a lot of the takes, but I also feel sometime we as gen z take some stuff too literal.. and in that way I sometime don’t like hearing som of these deep dives and also it correlates imo a lot to the issues we face socially as young ppl rn. Hope this makes sense lol
Pls keep watching. This 1sr episode is not like the rest of the show. I don’t want to spoil anything but just know the friendships rule this show. Like “Girlfriends” show with Tracy Ellis Ross!!!! And the fashion 👌🏼
Dude, I have a degree, a good job, a house in my name, and I fought to get everything since I grew up dirty poor, lost my dad at 5 and my mom at 25. She had a stress related stroke and lived the rest of her short life on a small disability pension, so even she doing her best to support me and my sister, she barely could do much even before got that bad when I was 15. Today is my 32nd birthday, and sincerely, my only regret is not being able to help my mom properly when she was alive. I feel like my life it's happier than the life of most of my married girl friends, just by hearing the way some of their partners treat them and take their free labor for granted. I'm talking about beautiful, well-educated women who not only work a full time job and take care of the home and kids, but some of them even have business on the side. I'm not settling down for men who don't put any effort, I will be happy with a cat. Plus, I still have life milestones that take precedent over men. And spermbanks are a thing 😂
The situationship between Carrie and Big was so hard to watch the first season and gets worse throughout the series. It is such a mess but so entertaining to watch lol
When I started college in 2010, there was still a smoking section in a restaurant near my school. I thought it was crazy then but that’s how it always had been.
I watched the show came out and it was sooo good, such a game changer to the tv world… it gets a ton of hate now which is strange but it’s actually pretty accurate for how a lot of women move in this world tbh. Keep watching, I love SATC the tv show. The movies not so much.
Miranda is right. I dated the short, fat, and broke guys. I was still mistreated, verbally abused, used financially, and cheated on. I went to therapy and also started setting boundaries and raising my standards after that. Now I’m engaged.

Yay! Congratulations!🎉
congratulations! hope ill find someone, too ❤

вроде мысль важная. но для меня любовь важнее дружбы. вместе с этим я считаю, что любовь всей твоей жизни должен быть тебе тоже другом..
As our late great queen once said, "A man comes into my life and I have to compromise?! For what? FOR WHAT?!"

You have to keep watching the show, it’s gets so good and goes over so many controversial topics that were never discussed back then
I'm watching it for the first time and 25 and it's worth it.
And spermbanks are a thing 😂
the level of excitement i had when i saw this video come up is unreal
Oh I loved The Carrie Diaries 😭 no one talks about it anymoreee
oh my god I loved the carrie diaries when I was a kid too!!! but no one knew about it when I asked omg 😭
The situationship between Carrie and Big was so hard to watch the first season and gets worse throughout the series. It is such a mess but so entertaining to watch lol
I was in my late teens/early 20s when this show first came out. To this day, aside from the fashion, I don’t know why we all loved this turd of a show
"double it and give it to the next person" hahahaah you're so funny I'm in looove
Omg who is this diva .. I need more
I can’t wait to see u talk about the model episode omg
"I really thought that i would get a little more information about Big..." - carrie for 5 seasons and a movie

Love everything about your commentary and thoughts. Hehe new subscriber!!
omg i just started rewatching it last night this came at the perfect timing!💕
When I started college in 2010, there was still a smoking section in a restaurant near my school. I thought it was crazy then but that’s how it always had been.
I watched the show came out and it was sooo good, such a game changer to the tv world… it gets a ton of hate now which is strange but it’s actually pretty accurate for how a lot of women move in this world tbh. Keep watching, I love SATC the tv show. The movies not so much.
Imma need a reaction/commentary for every episode 😭😩
”tired already”? girl be fr, u loved it 😅😅

I think the issue right now is that in four more years gen-z will be born and we just don’t let anything of what they’re saying slide 😂😂 9:14
