The Hydrow is a rowing machine that allows you to race others. I've had the Hydrow Rower for about three months now. I've used it for HIIT and longer, steady state rows. I've also used pretty much every rower on the market.
Today, I review the Hydrow and compare it to competitors like Concept2 and other smart home gyms like Tonal, Peloton, and Mirror.
Is Hydrow cheap? No. But is it good? Yes. Very good. Let's discuss.

For what it's worth, the HYDROW can be used without the subscription. They do have a feature called JUST ROW.

Bro that’s where I’m at haha made my own hydrow out of everything you just mentioned, it’s sickkkk and no monthly payment. I already dropped enough on the hardware. I’m not sure why these companies feel anything over $10 a month is acceptable when we’re buying the home gym equipment because we don’t want a membership! Otherwise we would just go to a local gym, duh! 🦦

Separating out the specific parts and tools for each of the seven step assembly process steps was brilliant on the part of the manufacturer. For the price, I am impressed at how sturdy this th-cam.com/users/postUgkxvObaTzoHoHQLL4lHbJQmExHqsrZQm-f7 unit is and it does go together easily. Well, I was puzzled at first at Step 5 and maybe the instructions should mention that rail #62 needs to be tilted upwards a little to get the rail to fit into the main part #44. I like it that the rower can be stored vertically in a really small amount of space, but be forewarned that this rower is top heavy and for safety you'll need at least two bungee cords to keep the unit upright, attaching them to something; in my case to a third garage door. I have had this unit only a short time, and I will post an update once I've had it for a year. As for working your legs, I have to admit that I'm mainly rowing for upper body strength and I use other forms of exercise for leg strength (like walking fast, biking, or using a trampoline. But if you pull as far forward as possible, then you can give preference to your legs for the first 4 feet or so of travel. I also admit to not taking the two electronic connectors apart at Step 7. I simply inserted the two batteries while the other parts remained connected. By the way, there is plenty of resistance here, even in the lowest resistance settings. Kudos to Sunny Health & Fitness !

There is a lady who posted a video from 2 months ago saying you can row without an account “just row mode”, but can’t program your rows, nor participate in the classes/videos. I guess that mode will show distance, s/m, heart rate etc. I bought one last weekend and had to go out of town the following day, so I didn’t activate my account. Good and honest review here- nice job on that. As far as this rower is concerned, I’ll pass… it has limited functionality without a subscription (and even less functionality if not plugged in and connected to the internet), it’s very expensive to start with, can’t disassemble it into two manageable pieces, and it also looks like it uses a belt instead of a chain attached to the rowing handle. I currently have a Concept 2 Model D… it cost me $900 (not incl shipping) about a year ago, is basically bullet-proof, needs no plug or internet, has no add’l subscription you need to purchase for full functionality, and offers pre-defined and custom workouts with the built-in PM5 monitor. To each his (or her) own of course… but the Concept 2 is the real deal for me.

Seems like a product for an entirely different market. For the people who just want to "get on and row" they've got plenty of options, the best of which is already pretty well established as Concept2. This is definitely a high end product geared toward people willing to spend the money on the external motivation. It's a gorgeous machine with classes that make you want to use it (or at least hate it a little less). They're going to continue to charge people for the motivation because people will continue to pay for it.

I think the simpler the better. I was a PTON owner for 3+ years verified - I actually got my original 3K invoice back. I owned so many PTONs that they could never deliver an actual working bike that lasted more than 1 year. I love the concept - but Concept 2 is more appealing because it's a simpler maintenance program and you can integrate it into strength workouts without the extra membership.

  • @erik5024
    @erik5024 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's a beautiful rower, but I don't think it's competing directly with a C2 in many aspects. If my workouts consisted of only longer rows and I could justify the upfront and ongoing costs, I might consider it. I love my C2, and it works perfectly for my workouts, whether it's a 20 minute interval row, or if it's part of a complex.

A way around the high price tag and expensive membership? Yes there is. I bought a Stamina X water rower which has a holder for an Ipad. Then I bought a Hydro App subscription from the Apple app store which is about much less monthly than the built-in hydro app. Around $22 vs $38/mo. Pros: Stamina X is a water rower which I prefer, it is very smooth and sounds like you are on the water, I have access to all the recorded and live classes, $700 rower instead of $2500 hydro, and no electronics that will go bad (I just switch out the Ipad). I can take the Ipad off and just use the included data screen. Cons: I have no onscreen data when using my Ipad. Instead I just match the pace of the onscreen coach but that is easy to do. I can't compete against other rowers (but I don't care, you might), I don't think I can earn the same accolades and awards as someone in their machine system.

Great review, thanks Coop. One stupid question from an English 'bird', I really want to buy one but currently Hydrow don't offer an assembly option. I KNOW it's easy to put together BUT I live on my own and have heard it's very heavy. I know you don't know me from Adam but, for an average woman, do you think I'd be able to lift this to put the feet and monitor on - is it really THAT heavy? I know it's a little heavier than the Peloton bike and I have that and that's hard enough to move so ..... Thanks :-)

What about the warranty if left in the garage? My Norditrack treadmill’s warranty was voided after a few years because they saw it in my home gym garage during a service check. With garage gyms growing and people purchasing expensive treadmills, rowers, bikes, and such, having your expensive equipments warranty voiding because of the location sucks. Could you do a video explaining that in the future. Maybe have the company owners touch on that.

There’s a just row function. It doesn’t do any long term tracking and it requires that you don’t have a sub. When you click a video it’ll give you the option.

You can row for time but they are buried in the class selection. I almost always do those and they still have the competitor feature while you are doing those, which is great.

Great review. The monthly cost is enormous, and that’s a no fly zone for me. I’d rather spend 600 dollars per year on equipment. It’s just not worth 14 dollars per week. (Canadian dollars)

Is that like a 720p-otato screen? Maybe it's just the camera recording, but I can see too many pixels for something you're supposed to keep staring at and watching.

My gym membership is only $20 i'm not going to pay almost double that every month. Plus you know eventually they will raise the membership price. If they had an option where I could just watch preset videos and row with those I would definitely get this.

The whole membership thing is what I don't like, even for bikes I would just get an echelon over peleton much cheaper and you can watch tons of free youtube workouts on your phone, tablet, laptop.
