Thank you so much! I am a 51 yr old female that has had to learn how to fix things on my own in the last few years. I live in an older home which means things are needing to be repaired. I followed your tutorial exactly and fixed my sink for a minimal out of pocket cost. I read a few of the negative comments and total disagree. You did a great job of simplifying the instructions and helping me (which my income doesn't allow for over priced repairs) fix my sink. Thanks again!

I would recommend this video to anyone that wants to replace a drain strainer and they will be relieved to see how easy this guy makes it to do yourself. Keep up the Great work and thanks again!

I love this! No nonsense and straight forward and clear instructions with great camera work. I have a leaky sink strainer basket (just discovered while getting something from further back under sink, and found about an 1/8" of water covering the entire bottom under sink; after trial and error, determined it was the old and decrepit strainer basket that needs changed). This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you!

Thank you SO much! My plumber was going to charge $175. For less than $20 in materials I was able to change this completely by myself. I feel so PROUD! For anyone with the same issue as me...I couldn't get the locknut off with a wrench, so I tapped it with a flat screwdriver until it loosened.

Thank you soooo much, this video helped me replace both sink strainers. I called Rotor Rooter and they said they have a flat rate of $65 just to
come out to assess the situation, this does not include labor fees. In fact all the plumbers I called had such a 'come out and see' fee.
All I needed was to get a $7 mini hack saw to remove that corroded locknut underneath as you suggested. I got all the materials I needed (hacksaw, sink strainers, plumber putty, tailpiece pipes) at Lowe's for around $30. In less than 30 minutes I was done!

Thank you for the demo, just what I needed! The nut was stubborn as you said it might be, so I sprayed it with vinegar and waited as Jim suggests below, then a few bangs with a hammer freed it. After that, Channel locks were fine for unscrewing the nut, no need for special tools! You just saved me some good money. Thank you.

Thank you very much for this video. I'm glad you went into enough detail to explain how things were to be taken apart/put back together. The instructions on the new strainers I bought weren't very descriptive so I was left guessing how much putty I needed to apply without ending up with overkill.

Thumbs down because it over-simplified the removal process... this seems to be a 'staged' repair where everything was partially loosened and easy to remove... when I replaced mine, the plumbers putty on the top-side of the old one was so strong and caked on it took about a half hour with a hammer and chisel to get it off

Wow, perfect instructions. I discovered that the threaded part underneath the sink had rotted the night of Jan 1, thus trickling water underneath for who knows how long, watched your video this morning on Jan 2, went to hardware store, bought the parts and putty, and it's totally fixed now. I was ready to call a plumber because it all seemed so cryptic down there.

I went to Menards thinking I would have to replace the entire sink. There was a VERY knowledgeable young lady who listened to my problem and told me all I needed to do was replace the sink's drain. Then she told me the real secret, unless you are tight on time, is to soak the drain in vinegar in order to make it much easier to disassemble. Since our sink has 2 bowls we put a cookie sheet to remember not to use the broken side. We let it soak for a full week before trying to disassemble. I took a hammer and long screwdriver and hit the ring underneath twice. The old one broken into 2 pieces. It was easy. Disassembly after soaking in vinegar, 30 seconds. Next I opened the new drain and looked at the accompanying instructions, which were confusing. All I got from them is I needed either plumber putty or silicone. Off to Home Depot I went where I learned the smallest plumber putty was less than 2 bucks compared to over 5 for silicone. Choosing the putty seemed a no brainer. Not sure how to reassemble correctly the first time with the instructions I went to TH-cam, found this video at the top of the list and watched it. The video was clear, short and concise. And it uses plummer putty, perfect. It took less than 5 minutes to assemble. AND NO LEAKS. The old one lasted 35 years. I am hopeful this one lasts longer then me. Great video.

Thanks Jim, I followed your advice. Mine wouldn't budge, so I sprayed the threads and nut with vinegar and waited an hour. It still wouldn't budge, so I held the strainer through the holes with pliers from below, and banged the nut until it came free with a hammer. Once it broke free of the calcium or rust it was a snap to unscrew. Thank you!

One bit of advice I would add is: When testing after installation, dont just put a small ammount of water in, fill up the sink past its normal working level to have as much pressure as possible on the seals. If it doesent leak now it never will.

Thank you for this video. I was just about to call a plumber to fix the leak on my laundry room utility sink. It's leaking from the drain. I am retired and don't enjoy these DIY projects where I have to get on my knees or back to fix something. I always end up bruising myself or cutting myself with annoying little abrasions. My son told me to check TH-cam for videos to see if it was something I could do myself. I'm off to the hardware store, ready to save some $$$$ and do it myself. You not only saved an old man some cash, but I think I can do this without hurting myself. Thank you. I'm sure the plumbers are pissed.

Thanks for the step by step, I just changed the sink strainer where we rent, the sink was forever clogging and leaking now it's way nicer to do our dishes. it only cost me 20 dollars or so for the puddy and strainer, best investment.

Excellent tutorial. We have a stainless steel utility sink that we use to wash our toddler when changing his diapers. He's been stepping and pushing into the sink strainer and the putty and gaskets finally gave way. I'll have to put a raised rigid grate that covers the entire sink bottom to keep pressure off the sink strainer once I replace it after watching your video.

Thank you for this video! I had trouble getting the bottom basket off - I used a flat nose screw driver and hammered into it and it eventually split the metal to get the ring off! Wanted to mention it in case someone didn't want to use power tools on it! But I did it, thanks for your help!!

Thanks for the very helpful and to the point video. Anyone attempting this should take the advice mentioned below where if the retaining ring doesn't twist off, use a grinder or dremel to cut the retaining ring. Do it that and save yourself headache, backache and all the cursing associated with these repairs.

The most important step seems to be the decision to change the style of locking nut. The old style with rubber seal and paper gasket does not seal well and is brittle. The one used in the replacement looks to evenly apply pressure to the rubber seal. Thank you for showing this in the video and I would suggest pointing out this design in the description/ captions. Thank you again. 🖖
