    Hey Weavers, here's my latest take on the Monkey's Fist Impact Tool. This time we're making a compact version. I've decided to call this one a door knocker because I've seen similar items that are hung on a door knob or door handle to a front door in case you have a visitor one day that decides to get fresh with you. But in all honesty, this was just a creative project for me to see if it could be done. Hope you all like it!

Then made my handle using a Box Braid with a small retention pommel at the end. Gave one to my Sifu and each of the Black Belts at the dojo as a parting gift before I left home.

    A monkey's fist knot was traditionally used by sailors to add extra weight at the end of a heaving line, used to throw a cable from ship to shore. The knot, often containing an extra weight, would be tied at one end of the line, and the other end would be tied to the heavier cable.

  • @kevinmahaney3650

    The "monkey fist" comes ffom the days of sailing ships. You would tie a line on it and either throw it or put it in a blunder bus or cannon to shoot a line to another ship or the shore. They varied in size.

It was mounted solid on a platform on the outside corner of a friend of my Dad's Weapons Museum. Of course I was too small to do much of it, but I remember it WAS loud! It was a muzzle, loader with what looked like a bugle on the end. He said you loaded the black powder and a wadding and then whatever you could find...gravel, course sand, pieces of broken dishes...etc.

    I usually note on these things that many states still carry a "slung shot" on their prohibited concealed-weapons list. This is exactly a slung shot, though typically rather smaller than the historical items which used a piece of "shot" (cannister or grape) intended to be fired from a cannon. This was a very common sailor's weapon in the past.

    I have one of those yellow monkey fist tools to hold the ball. I made my monkey fist with an 1 1/2" chromed ball with a much longer lanyard. That short handle you made looks great but it limits the velocity at which the ball can impact the target. The one I made has a much longer handle that can be shortened if you need to, but when I swing with the lanyard fully extended I can impact the target with much more force because I can actually swing it around my head to greatly build up its impact velocity.

      How much longer?

    • @benth162
      @benth162 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MikeKollin At least twice as long, but I do not make mine with that style of knot making. I use a four stand braid on the lanyard. Then I loop the end of the lanyard back upon itself, with two of the strands on one side and two on the other, leaving about 1/2 inch unknotted gap, then knot with a crown knot on the backside That gap allows the lanyard to slide down to a loop just large enough for your hand, thus giving you the longest length for swinging, or you can slide that end with the crown knot right up against the ball then you grip both up close to the ball to shorten the swinging length. What he has shown in the video is more like a "Black Jack" type Monkey Fist. It's effective none the less, but I wanted to increase the impact. I think that if you go to youtube and type in Mondey Fist you'll get a dozen or more videos on how to make them with different styles of lanyards. Good luck and thanks for replying.

For example, after you have wrapped around the 1st of the 3 faces of the core, instead of turning 90 degrees to the right, you turn 90 degrees to the left to wrap the 2nd face in the opposite direction and then you do the same with the 3rd set? Or am I incorrect and you are doing something different?

    • @virabhadra2
      @virabhadra2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paracordwizard Nice idea about degrees! Yes, there is 2 ways.
      If you imaging a cube and the top face is in front of you, like XY coordinates. You start the turns from the lower-left corner, making the vertical turns from left to right. The last turn is finished on the right edge. And here is a tricky moment. You can start the horizontal turns from the upper-right or lower-right corner.
      If you do from UR-corner, it will be (n +1/4) turns as the diagonal point relative to the origin. If you do 3 times the same way, the point moves 3 times by diagonals of the cube and go back to the beginning.
      If at the tricky point you start the horizontal turns from the lower-right point, making exactly n turns, you move the point just along 1 edge. You will not get to the origin doing 3 times this way.
      Ofcause it's not the rule. Combining these to ways you can output the rope even from the opposite corner of the cube as the main diagonal of cube.

    Are Monkey Fist Impact Tools Weapons? Read On and Decide for Yourself. I was up in a mountainous reserve park during a severe ice storm in pitch blackness because power lines were down and local cellular towers were offline. Meters away from me an elderly person's vehicle went sliding off the road into a ditch and the driver was slumped over the wheel with the engine running and the doors locked. Other than deep snow and ice, there were no visible rocks or heavy objects to be had. That is when you need what I keep as a rescue device - a monkey fist with a 2" diameter steel ball very similar to the one Tim has posted in this video. One good arm swing and the tempered glass window disintegrated providing instant access and enabling first aid. In addition to monkey fist impact tools serving as rescue devices, they can also be outdoor life savers. Whether you climb rocks or trees or other structures, tossing your monkey fist at the end of a 2ft long paracord lanyard can lodge the fist between a crack in rocks or a pocket in a tree or between metal interfaces on a ladder thereby keeping a person from taking a perilous plunge. Impact tool can also be great to pulverize ice that your wheels are stuck on during the winter. And if you ever need to get into a burning building, a monkey fist will take out a giant glass window more easily than an axe. And there are a multitude of situations in real life where you need cord to help you out of a jam - clothes line, fishing line, automobile load tie-downs, package ties, emergency suspension, ..... A monkey fist with 11 passes of paracord and 2" of paracord lanyard can give you about 50ft of Paracord 550 which can be disaggregated into 50 x 7 = 350ft of single paracord strands that can support 50-100 lbs each. Oh, if you are left with that beautiful chrome plated steel ball in the core, you can use it as a certified baoding ball to strengthen your hands and help meditate yourself out of your predicament. The list of uses of MF Impact tools can go on and on. It is not clear to me why some states or countries classify these devices as unlawful weapons while they allow people to stroll down main street carrying firearms, hunting knives, clawed hammers, 12" scissors, razors and more. But like other intimidating devices, if you keep you mF impact tools in your backpack or trunk, or other location where they are not visible and you clearly do not have any intent on wielding them around with malintent, then you are not likely to get into any trouble. I live next door to a respected police officer and showed mine. He fully agrees and I am happy to report that he has also learning to become a Weaver of Eternity. Cheers, Murray

    The handle should be minimum 15 inches. If used for self defense purposes that is. Two feet would be better. But probably illegal to carry. A chain with a small padlock locked on the last link works well for self defense situations and can be used for many other purposes which makes considering it an illegal weapon very difficult to do. And a chain is much more durable. Not downing what you made because that is some good craftsmanship and looks cool.

    Hi, I've been making similar impact tools as yours, but I have to ask as I'm curious, what is the reason you dunk the monkey fist in hot water after you have completed it?

    • @paracordwizard
      @paracordwizard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Commercial paracord 550 (not the full military grade) will shrink when wet. The hotter the water the more the shrinkage. Max shrink will occur in boiling water after 20-30 secs.. A straight unknotted / unwoven piece of cord can shrink by up to 15% of it's dry length. However if it has been woven / knotted tightly (like a Cobra bracelet) the length of the finished project will shrink approx 4% . Once the paracord has completely dried, it will NOT shrink again (wet, dry, other other - except melted of course). Shrinking your project after complete will also tighten your weave and firm up the structure of it. If you are into making precisely fitting rings and bracelets or other dimension critical paracord projects, you can rely on the size and of a shrunk project being permanent and reliable. However I do not recommend shrinking paracord before you weave it. Doing so tends to stiffen the cord and it can be more difficult to weave. Its best to weave a product that is 4% longer than the desired final length and then shrink it.

    Is there a limit as to how heavy a ball we could tie rope around and use as a tool such as featured in this video? I've got a 12 pound shot put that I would love to attach rope to and use as a workout on the beach. Can rope support a steel ball that heavy?

    This is a lot like one I did with a golf ball a few years ago. Do you have any videos on how to make the monkey fist more even? I have a tendency to got some tight spots

    • @paracordwizard
      @paracordwizard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have found that increasing or decreasing the number of passes by 1 tends to find the sweet spot in the monkey fist is distorted (too loose or too tight). The published table of monkey fist core diameter versus number of passes is pretty generally accurate but depending on properties of the paracord, 1 pass higher or lower turns out the best result.

  • @donotlike4anonymus594
    @donotlike4anonymus594 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Small suggestion... for effect...
    Tie everything up very very very tightly...
    And use one of those meltable waxes's/plastics/... instead of a steel ball..
    Then melt it...
    Be it a cold firm playing dough....plastic wax or whatever... use heat gasoline alcohol... whatever...just make sure not to destroy the cord you're using and make sure that the fluid can come out...
    Is it better hollow...
    Sure....
    Depends on application obviously
