    You're definitely right about the competitive scene being like an island. I started the game late (Marching Fire) and I am no where near the skill level to even play scrims.
    But the issue is: how do you get from casual to even entry level comp? I watch tourneys when I can, I watch comp streams and scrims. Then I hop into matchmaking and none of what I learned while watching applies.
    It's like MM and Comp are two completely separate games, and there isn't a clear path from one to the other. So I see the perspective of casual players who think comp "isn't for them" because they really are in a different world.

    • @chokonnit7337
      @chokonnit7337 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thing with mm is that most of the time you are being matched with players not using mics and communicating. Communication is very important when ganking and deciding what points you're going to boost.

    I believe to push the competitive scene and have the majority of the player base care about it there needs to be some incentive for players to improve at the game. I believe it is very easy to play this game with a casual mindset and to never improve very much with the lack of in game information and the way most online matches play out.
    I believe if there was a dominion based ranked or tournament about once a week for small rewards (to not disperse the playerbase and make it more enticing) it would give players a real reason to practice and to consume/seek out actual competitive content.
    As someone who got into the game fairly late I noticed the most readily available content was duels, and it was hard to find 4v4 content at all, let alone competitive. This is from a casual perspective not looking hard into the scene just searching your character or the modes you are interested in. In random matches I see most of the playerbase at best just know their punishes and not much else. Little map sense/teamplay because it does not matter to them.
    I find competitive dominion very fun to watch but the average player is not going to go searching out twitch streams/looking up tournament times/watching warriors den when they probably only have a little time to play the game.
    The team needs to give legitimate reason for the community to improve on their own and from there the competitive scene can improve.
    Once again I got into the game quite late and play casually I’m just trying to give insight from that perspective

    • @nije1x
      @nije1x 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with this. On top of that, they need to regularly update training modes along with the balance changes and incentivise them with steel, e.g.13-20 steel for every five minutes of active engagement with a bot. Players are expected to spend a considerable amount of time practicing and learning the heroes inside and out but they prefer to spend their time earning steel and the training modes do nothing to compensate.
      Taking ranked duel out of beta and giving it a revamp with regular updates including game mode balancing, maps, varied events, and rewards would encourage players to improve as well.
      Also, in-game notifications of tournaments with the option to watch via twitch or spectator mode would help boost the competitive scene.

    • @Daniel-hq7hm
      @Daniel-hq7hm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I Agree, One other thing I think would help would be informative videos from top skilled players INSIDE the game, where the top players for each class get a chance to show their tips and explain the characters meta because as much as the devs understand the characters they are making, these 1%ers understand them better. It would give incentive and promote their channels as well as introduce casual players to a new level of play. I love zerk and discovered BarakYEET much later than I wish I had.

    Do a mythbusters video. Hell yes. Debunk common misunderstandings and rumours. It would do much for the community and how the competitive community is perceived, I think. Like, explain in detail why lightspam (and attack spam in general) is not a thing/not a problem, why hero X is not overpowered (raider, etc) and why hero Y is not underpowered (PK, etc) to help make the general perception of how the game works closer to reality.

      There definitely are attacks that, when spammed, ruin the game. Attacks such as highlanders kick and grab, warden's bash, conquerors bash, etc. Obviously the attacks are meant to be effective but it gets annoying when you can't have your turn in a fight

    • @chokonnit7337
      @chokonnit7337 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, a gank can be won every time if it's 1 to X by communicating. This is an issue in higher level ganks because more people are grouped up and using mics. The damage reduction when being hit during a counter gb seems to only apply if the attack was thrown after the guardbreak started. This means, if a warden throws a top heavy and you are guardbroken before it hits then you will receive 40 damage. Ganking needs to be looked at, especially the weird indicators

    • @ashisunblade
      @ashisunblade 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@chokonnit7337 This is a perfect example of why Craic should do an educational video, because all the attacks you mentioned are very bad if 'spammed'. Warden and Conq both have much higher risk than reward on their moves (13/18 for landing vs 30+ GB punish if they miss) and highlander's kick/grab only works against OOS opponents, otherwise it just gets dodge attacked.

    • @chokonnit7337
      @chokonnit7337 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashisunblade oh yeah I forgot about black prior's side dodge attack. Or centurion's side dodge attack. Or how lawbringers shove definitely knocks him out of the attack before getting grabbed. Or how warden can definitely bash him out before getting grabbed. Or how nobushi definitely has i-frames to dodge the grab. Or how gladiator definitely has i-frames to dodge the grab. Or how conq can definitely bash him out of the grab. Or how warlord definitely has a side dodge attack. Or how jormungandr definitely has a side dodge attack. Take into consideration the entire roster, not everyone has I frames. Shaolin, shaman, and orochi can safely dodge attack it but berserker, kensei, etc must delay it until they see the grab. Also is your only point that those attacks are higher risk than reward? The bash for conq and warden is extremely safe, the only risk is for whiffing but even then you can just cancel warden's bash and delay conq's until you see a dodge. You are also saying light attacks for any hero should never be used. Unless the hero has extremely distinct animations for heavies and lights, you really cannot be certain if it's a light or heavy unless basing it on reads.

  • @signallos
    @signallos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I’ve been wanting this forever but: Field Battles. Huge field battles where you fight a ton of enemies, they could tie this with the faction war and make your efforts actually count, almost every for honor trailer shows huge battles. E3 2015, Story Trailer and yet the closest we have is skirmish. Which is just truly sad.
    Also I’m so glad someone else is saying it. The faction war even for my Viking friends is boring. They don’t even do anything and they just win. Me as a knight, I know so many who don’t even try because they know we’ll lose, and also the alphabet soup with a steak knife, brain cell deficient, mouth breathing volcano cultists.

    Casual and competitive players rarely see eye to eye as their paths to fun are different. Each side comes to For Honor with different inputs and gets different outputs. The casual experience is not the competitive experience, and the inability to relate to one another from one's own lens is what creates divisiveness.
    As a casual player I admit I have no real motivation or interest in consuming competitive For Honor content. Why? Psychology I guess. In most cases I do not relate to to the competitive mindset, drive, experience, or style of play within the context of For Honor. My path to fun in For Honor is with friends, rinse-and-repeat matchmaking, playing my favorite hero, letting combos fly, mowing down minions, and getting lost in the chaos of un-optimal play. I know I can be a better player but I enjoy the mid-skill ecosystem I play in as that is where I have the most fun. The pursuit of high level play is simply not my path.
    However I understand the benefits, and sometimes the necessity, for games to have competitive players. For many in the comp scene fun is achieved through competition, high level of play, overcoming equally skilled opponents, and deepening one's ability within the game. Equally the competitive players are often a litmus test for game balance as a whole, as their dedication to game know-how can be vital to the community and devs. But being the flagship upon which the rest of the fleet is judged can do just as much harm as it can good.
    Your path to fun is as equally valid as mine, but unfortunately the gap in skill creates a gap in game experience which compounds into the lack of understanding between comp and casual. We all know the arguments, but the broken record that is community factionalism will keep playing until both sides acknowledge they come to the table with different intentions and methods of fun, and that's ok.

    alright i feel like playing the longshot here. Hear me out: they teased that the Wulin empire is big and far. • @chokonnit7337

      Johan China has seize weapons, gunpowder, strategy, more equipment that’s better compared to the devastated and constantly warring factions. Vikings are little in number due to food and sickness , knights don’t have many castles, and the samurai just have super low
      numbers. So overall I’d say pretty equal footing here.

      Game wise, it kinda seems like they are scrapping the faction war as we know it, so the whole territories mechanic might not even look the same anymore.

    I’m glad ranked is finally getting some attention. I’ve been grandmaster for a while now(with shoalin mind you so I beg to differ that he isn’t viable) but it gets boring because it’s the same people over and over again. The high skill fights are extremely fun, I’ve made some good friends with those, but a good chunk of people up there are just spammers. It gets to the point where it’s not any fun because you have to go through like 10 matches with the same 3 guys where 2 of them are spammers.

    I was thinking of faction dominion/breach taking over dominion matches. You play as your factions heroes and now we have a more direct impact on what happens on the war map by whether we win or lose these fights. It will also be a more direct representation to which faction is actually better instead of Vikings just having the numbers.

    Just thought I'd give my two cents on pushing the competitive scene, a lot of other fighting games have incredibly steep learning curves when it comes to playing competitively, a new player will always get completely stomped by someone of even intermediate skill simply because the gap in knowledge and experience is so big.
    I personally know quite a few people who have played fighting games once or twice and promptly never played them again because they're "too hard", and obviously they'll never learn if they never play.
    If the dev team really wants to push the competitive front of FH and make it generally more accessible to all players the first thing they need to do is give players a reason to keep coming back and play more. I'm gonna be honest I think the battle pass they're proposing might actually work for that purpose, although it's more likely to only apply to players who already play a fair bit. They should probably implement rewards for ranking placements, giving the players reason to play ranked game modes beyond ornaments and other cosmetics.

    I feel like they should try to push ranked dominion!
    I can't remember exactly when they had it originally (someone correct me as I'm probably wrong) but I think it was before tribute had even been released, or not long after, so clearly the devs were more focused on that and hadn't quite realised dominion was the way to go.
    Yes, it will be annoying to solo queue if you run into 4 stacks, but in other games like Rainbow that's the same, you would just run into teams at the highest rank and after all, it is a team mode so it makes sense to make you want to play in a team. However, the downside though would be, if you or your team gets too high of a rank then you wouldn't be able to find games. ( But I think on console this wouldn't be too bad as I never normally have trouble finding games, like a lot of PC players say in normal mm)
    Lastly, I'm sure this will make some people mad but I think they should just get rid of ranked duel, just so there is only 1 ranked mode for people to focus on. (But I dont play it so thats why, I'm sure the people who do play it have fun but clearly the majority of the community enjoys dom more)

    The biggest issue/problem that For Honor has right now is that for some reason, the low-level/casual players absolutely refuse to improve, especially compared to other games, so there is this massive chunk of the player base that will forever sit around at those levels of play.
    I love the memes as much as anyone else, but a lot of the times these memes gives off the impression that for honor isn't a serious competitive game (and imo some memes severely hinder the perception of the balancing of the game - lawbringer being the biggest example, for whatever reason many still thinks he is weak), these perception causes many to play for honor casually and thus never really improve.
    As you mentioned, casual players need to want to improve, but tbh at this point I dont know if it'll ever happen, I feel bad for you and other competitive players because this is one of the only games where the competitive players are looked down upon by the casual player base, instead of a goal they can work towards.

    I'm super interested in competitive. I've been binging on your content lately and I've been learning a lot about the game IE roll assignments rotations how to gank properly, how to team fight properly etc...I just wish I had people to play this game with as none of my friends play it anymore and I'm 30 aka a boomer so it's hard for me to make friends to play the game with

    Thanks for the info you do good job.
    The main problem in competitive for honor in my opinion is this. The awareness and availability of competitive is so poorly covered that players know nothing about it, or even how to get in on it. Myself included, I'm really good at for honor even in random casual play. I've played several hours almost everyday since I started playing it. I'm not the best, but I'm more often than not the best on my team or in the match I'm in. Yet I don't know anyone that plays it, I don't have the slightest idea how to get into competitive or anything.
    If Ubisoft wants competitive to be part of this game and this community, then why not make a place for it on the home menu or match modes. That way players who think they are ready could queue into a certain match at a certain time for tournament qualifying etc. Something anything like that would help a lot. It's like competitive is a secret society. We (other players) know it exists and are interested yet we know very little to nothing about it. We know even less how to get in on it. We have no way to even tell if we're good enough to take part in it. Players have no real way to get better and train for it if they want to get better and be competitive. I learn as much as I can about for honor I love the game. I try to learn all the characters, all the confirmed attacks, all the situational attacks, all the punishes etc. I want to be one of the best because I really enjoy it. Yet in all the hours upon hours of material I've read, watched, listened to, and talked about, I know little to nothing about competitive. I would like to get better and play competitively, but how do I...? I would think these are the thoughts of many many players. Thanks for reading.

    I can fix faction war. Hear me out.
    Ubisoft could make faction war more interesting if the determination for the faction you fall into corresponds with the highest cumulative reputation in a given faction.
    In other words, if you have the most reputations in the Viking characters (cumulative) then that is your faction loyalty. I think this would encourage people to form a stronger identity with the faction they are in and could give extra weight and thought into the characters they invest their time into.
    If you max out all the characters to 70 then you’re a god and get rewards for all faction war outcomes. Not sure anyone/what % of players would achieve this.
    Moreover, I’m sure there are a lot of creative ideas that could spawn from a system like this.

    i use to care about competitive, but not anymore. Has just taken to long to get there. i don't even watch tournies anymore. Played since alpha, and just accepted it isn't happening. I know they seem to be showing interest in reviving it now, but it feels like too little too late. Maybe they could open a cash shop and sell armors or whatever, then take the profit from that and put it in a prize pool for a pro league season. i think hirez does a great job at funding smites pro league. Maybe check that out. Too much type for it or i would. Maybe they could put a unique armor up for grabs as a prize too, idk.

    Shinobi is so bad Zero didn't even mention him. They really, really, REALLY screwed Shinobi over. Remember, he was a "season" new character along with Centurion and his home map is Temple Garden. Shinobi is consistently at the bottom of the duel win list both casual and ranked. And what does Ubisoft decide to do? Why buff Raider of course! And stupidly so at that (which they later scaled Raider back a bit). Ubisoft then had the audacity to call Shinobi's nerf not a nerf but a "rework". They should either rebuff Shinobi back to his original state or delete him entirely from the game.

      BB 349 Actually no one likes it because its not fun to be so limited in what you do, play ad optimally as possible, and have a staring contest; besides other reasons like entire heroes being crossed out for being bad.
      FH is about making predictions, fighting by pattern, reading opponents, and putting all that into play with your kit, offense needs to be hard to react to or its back to a glorified staring contest.
      Would you rather the meta stayed completely defensive or would you like to throw attacks and other people throw attacks back.

    Only 2 characters and a whole year of balance changes? I love FH but that's the nail in the coffin. They should have been updating the characters and doing something about class identity from the jump. Like why is it so hard to make heavies the ones with the slowest attacks but HA to compensate? Or make assassin's the fastest but make reflex guard ass to compensate? Also deflects should be streamlined because how is it that one can parry unlockables but not deflect them. Deflecting should be treated as a dash because you are dashing into an attack in order to trigger it. By that same token assassin's should not be able to deflect undodgables because in order to deflect you have to dash. This game is a mess and it needs to be redone or have all of this fixed in a sequel because right now it's just a hodgepodge of ideas with no consistency.

    • @robertloach3539
      @robertloach3539 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      AzureExia why should unblockables be deflectable? How does that makes sense? Or even really add anything to deflects? The only attack this would really have an effect on is Sun da’s lights. But you might as well just parry those for an easy free heavy. That shouldn’t be the main focus if for honor is as your dramatic self put it ‘a mess’. 😂 what a pointless balancing change.
      Anyway. The game will hopefully this year push a more balancing/operation health like focus. With two new heroes to add something new. What they’ve shown of year 4 is by no means ‘the last nail in the coffin’ i for one think they’re stepping in the right direction rather than focusing all their resources into adding lots of new heroes that’ll likely need balance changes pretty quickly. *cough* year 1 and 3. And instead focusing on the health of the game. The RIGHT direction for for honor.
