I’m a CO, just found this video and I love it
1: I’m just doing my job, and running it within the boundaries of policy”
2: you should be listening to any verbal directive given by any officer on this pod.
3: there is no privacy in prison, and there is no us
4: I’m confident in my ability as an officer and dont need the approval of others to justify that.
5: I appreciate the support, but I can handle things.
6: I don’t listen to favors, I listen to concerns
7: I’ve already been made aware, should I be concerned about your concern?”
8: I’m not that officer, therefore i won’t allow it

I like your responses. I work in a work re-entry center and at times struggle with the right answer. It's either to personal or mean.
These are straight forward and let's them be heard and gives validation and respect and is not rude. We have to hold the boundary but you don't win if you are rude while doing it.
      Thanks for the real response.

    1) You should like it whenever the unit is worked properly
    2) The only thing that needs to be done is the right thing, every time.
    3) there is no us; there’s you and then there’s me.
    4) So?
    5) I appreciate that, but it is not needed.
    6) You know I can’t, so don’t ask again
    7) im aware, glad to see you are as well. Should I be concerned about the fact that you’re on the lookout for him/her ?
    8) Unfortunately for you, I’m not Ofc. Jackson.

Tier Talk Correctionsone TH-cam Channel Yes sir! Something I ran into a lot is that the inmates wanted to throw the ball in your court and have you fall into a play. So neutral, respectful, yet firm responses end the game and have them take ownership and responsibilities for their actions.

    1. Appreciate that. (I know how I run my unit and I know I treat them with respect, which is not something they always get. I’m real and I’m consistent, but take no bs.)
    2. I don’t care who you do it for, just do it.
    3. There’s no “us”.
    4. I’ve never cared about what anyone thought before, and I won’t start today.
    5. Cool.
    6. I don’t do favors. If it’s within policy, that’s fine. Anything outside of policy is a no.

#5 It is important to listen when inmates are "tipping you off" about something. In one of the local Jails several years ago a Correctional Deputy was very badly assaulted by several Inmates. During his walk he was passed a note tipping him off. For whatever reason the information wasn't taken seriously or acknowledged. The attack may have been able to be prevented. It's easy to put on the "game face" and treat all inmates the same but keep in the back of your head that there may be one who is trying to do the right thing. The Deputy survived but almost died.

    • @TierTalk
      @TierTalk  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Good point, that makes a lot of sense. But we also have to remember that we can not put ourselves in a feeling of obligation towards that inmate.

      @amb158 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agreed. It is sometimes hard to know who is trying to do the right thing, and who is trying to blow smoke, though id say the vast majority are smoke blowers. Honestly if a kite like this was found, I say its shakedown time. We had an inmate, (I think he's still in the facility actually) that fakes medical injuries when he knows something is about to go down, or so I have heard. Does it for his own safety, but still a tip off.

And the kinds of questions that the inmates are asking me and saying to me. And I’d ask a question with a question to them. First, I just want to say, thanx to you and the team for creating these corrections channels. I just started in corrections last week and made some supper rookie mistakes with inmates by issuing warnings instead of write ups; mainly because superiors were already on my head about documenting. I got my authority undermined by a superior my first day on the tier in the worst dorm at the start of my shift. And I later got a verbal and written warning over documentation. It was only my third day on the job with no OJT on the tiers. So those things definitely put a dent in my morale. Really made me question if I'm even cut out for this work. I don't think I should be looking for reasons to call in on the second week of work. lol But, in making those mistakes I realized that this job is not just babysitting adults. It's also an opportunity for me to grow in areas I'm weak in; like multitasking, time management, people management, communication, etc... The info I glean here makes me feel like I can bounce back if I work to get better each tour. It's like ongoing training here. So thanx again for the wealth of information you guys put out to help us new boots in this weird world of corrections.
    1. Yup, I bet ya'll think ya'll bout to get away with violating huh? Do the right thing sir and we won't have no issues.
    2. Nah, everything you do here is for you.
    3. You already know, state business, progress, and life vision. Anything else, I really ain't tryna hear it.
    4. I don't care. That's irrelevant to me.
    5. Nah, If God don't have my back, nobody got it. I'm good.
    6. I don't do favors sir.
    7. Okay, and.....
    8. I'm not officer Jackson. And ya'll not doing it on my tour.

    1) Okay (And keep an extra eye on her if i'm in that unit)
    2) You don't get a choice of what you have to do and don't have to do. You are to follow any order any officer gives you
    3) Let me think about it (As i notify my supervisor and write a ticket)
    4) I don't care. He's not here
    5) I don't need your help. I have plenty of help if I need it
    6) Depends

    3 - "No, absolutely not"
4 - "Officer Jackson isn't here move along"
5 - " No you will not, you will keep to your self. Is that understood?"
6 - "This isn't a catering service, if this is about your over all well being or protection which you fear for I will notify my supervisor and we will sort out the issue. But, NO special favors is that understood?"
7 - "Now why is that any of your concern?"

Thanks for posting these scenario based videos. They help me think of all situations and what I would do or say.
1- If by you, you mean I like when there is order in the unit, then I’m glad to hear you appreciate what we all do during our shifts.
2- I can appreciate your compliance to a direct order, but I need for you to understand that you arnt doing me any favors. Either do what is being asked of you, and if not that’s fine just realize that there are consequences for each and every action.
3- secrets don’t make friends my guy, lol, anything you say to me will be totally transparent with every staff member.
4- what makes you think I’d take your word over my brothers/sisters? You need to remember that next time you try to stir the pot.
5- you know what man... I can appreciate the fact that you have a desire to do the right thing. I do too that’s why I joined the department of corrections. But you see this? (Radio) these brothers and sisters of mine will always have my back. If you hear of something that might go down it is your duty to report it to us, but let us take it from there.
6- I don’t do favors, I do my job. If you need something let me know and I will check with the oic if it is possible.
    7- ...I know he’s coming. What’s the issue?
8- man you play too much! Lol... still playing your parents against each other?! Dude, how I run the shift and how he runs the shift may be different but you are still required to do as we say.

Story time; I was the building SGT. for G4 offenders. These guys were either about to go to seg or had just gotten out. An officer on C pod called for response and supervisor etc. He had found an inmate performing fallacio on another inmate. The guy recieving was apprehended by myself and charged with rape. The giver was not charged as he was seen as the victim. He was not a victim. This is his hustle as an indigent offender. I had multipule inmates approach me and tell me to go easy on him. I did until that offender said he was going to have sex with my wife when he got out, so the unit began to call him Dick Sucking Dupree. I called him that for years. He would scream at me and cry. He opened the door. I closed it. He never said another word about my wife. I never stopped calling him DSD. Other offenders watched as I, the building SGT. handled a man that was disrespecting my family. None of them followed in his foot steps. Stand up for you or get run over.

    1. (responding as a SGT.) I know you like it when I work the unit. I keep you all in line.
2."Dont do me any favors. I can handle it on my own with out your help. This is my block, you just live on it."
3."Nope. Thats not how this works. Privacy doesnt exist here, bud."
    4. "Dont worry about officer Jackson. I handle my business my self. Just like I handled your partner the other day."
    5. I have heard this one A LOT!!! I had a reputation at my last unit of being abrasive but right. I had snitches and rats in my pocket. Convicts have told me about hits on me and my friends. I think I would honestly just say "Thanks, I guess, but if you dont wear my uniform, dont jump in."
6.Another regular request. In my opinion, the best answer is "I dont do favors. If you deserve it, you will get it. No extra for anyone ever."
7.Hahahahaha!!! We run 'jiggers' even as supervisors! "Good lookin out" is what I would say if I was burning off, but if I am doing what I should, they wouldnt be hanging around me. Convicts didnt stick too close. I was always doing a pat down or a strip search so they kept distance.
    8. Depending on what OFC. Jackson is allowing, Jackson and I may have to have a little talk about following POST orders and enforcing policy or he may go see the man. As far as what I would say "This is my pod/block/run/tier/building. I will run it how I see fit. Get used to how I do things, because its not going to change."
After years of supervising knuckleheads wearing BOTH uniforms, I have become set in my ways. I have learned that yelling is a tool to be used infrequently. Respect goes both way. If you respect them, often times it is given back. If they disrespected one of my officers, it is on in thier life. I feel my job as the SGT. is to filter the bad from those above me and below me in the chain of command. I fix it all without LT.s help. I always felt if my LT. was involved, I was failing, unless it was a training situation for me to learn my next job.

If you’re not wearing my uniform don’t jump in? As if you guys really run the prison, the inmates let you run the prison and I think some of you guys forget that. Don’t get me wrong I’m training to be an officer, but your comment of, if you’re not wearing my uniform don’t jump in. That’s just ozzes arrogance to me n there are plenty of times were in made safeguards from ass whippings heart attacks and everything in between, I’m not saying kiss the inmates ass I’m not saying anything like that but to me I just sounded arrogant and if you were getting your ass kicked by four or five inmates and he was the only one there to protect you or at least help you him and his friends I guarantee you will have you attitude changed towards him if you did, but after that statement I doubt he would. And again I understand you’re not depending on inmates, I just don’t believe that you should make enemies with them and saying Something like that is like making an enemy

We like it when you teach this group (Modified as going in as psychologist).
Good that you are gaining something from this group.
I know I don’t have to do this, but for you I will.
Please know that you are not doing anything for me. Anything you choose to do, you are doing for yourself.
Can we keep this between us? So let me remind you of limitations of confidentiality. Technically, while I am your psychologist, you are still considered an inmate, and ward of the State. I work for the State of Colorado. In reality, nothing you say is really confidential, and depending on the nature of what you say, can be shared with other staff to include my superiors.

I don't feel like starting and stopping this video but i will say this. My response to all of the answer would be a strong No. And none of his business when it comes to my partner or coworkers. I also would be thinking why is he chiseling at my self esteem. That alone would piss me off. (Not that i would necessarily display it.) Depending on the situation.
Also let inmates know that we don't have any secrets. And my supervisors are well aware inadvance of any state perks earned. Furthermore i don't allow inmates to foster these types of comfortable emotions openly towards me. If they have anything for me outside of respect they better keep it to themselves.....period..

It's simple really. I used to get all flustered but over time it's just gotten to were I'm pretty nonchalant about everything. I really don't listen to what inmates say unless it's work related and if it's not I just say go away. Lol or the blank stare is nice. I don't ever get in my feelings like some people do. It's work and I'm there to do a job and that's literally the only thing on my mind. If an inmate tries to distract me I literally brush him off and continue doing what I'm doing. Like one time I was going through the mail and an inmate comes to the flap and tries to make small talk. I just stare at him with annoyance and then say ok walk away now.

I have only said the first one to certain guards "Man, I am glad you are working tonight" I really meant it because I dreaded the other guard working, but then I think a lot of his peers did too. Here is one some people i knew asked certain guards. . First they act like their lighter is not working then ask,"hey can I get a light from you?" This was just to see if the guard would do it so they can ask for other things later. I am wondering what line they use now since they banned smoking in Missouri a couple years ago.

One thing I enjoy that my Sgt says is," Who ever came up with the word 'Trustee' for inmates, is either an idiot or has never worked in a jail/prison a day in their life."
Your questions in this video require you to think on your feet. However, here are some words of advice when you approach each question.
    Remember....
    1) Be Firm, Fair, and Consistent (Professional).
    2) Trust, but verify! (Officers, staff, inmates, etc.)
    3) Just because they are a 'Trustee' doesn't mean they are trustworthy.

It’s about being able to connect with inmates but not to dance their tunes. So most of the time just respond with”Nice, be cool” no matter what they said, then go on to “walking and talking” to next one to see if “early sign of trouble” shown. So just smile and “repeat what he said and say Right on, be cool”. After that if the inmate really need to ask you something he would ask again.

    2. You should be following the directives of anyone working in this section. Is there a valid reason you think you shouldn't have to?
    3. Sorry, I can't do that, and I don't keep secrets from my fellow officers.
    4. Okay...?
    5. What exactly do you plan to have "going down"? I trust in my ability and my fellow officers.
    6. I don't do favors. If there is something legitimate I can check on for you or you have any concerns regarding your stay or your current court process (not that I would probably find myself dealing with court processes as much in a prison compared to a jail) I can see if there is anything I can do, though I can't make a concrete decision whether I can do anything at this time; and again, I don't do favors.
    7. Okay...?
    8. Well Officer Jackson isn't here right now, I am.
These are hard ones because I'm inherently a polite person, so saying things like thank you are just my nature, but it can also potentially open doors up that you don't want opened. Not to say you should never say thank you to an inmate, but I think it needs to be very cautioned and few and far between in the right circumstances. There shouldn't really be an opportunity for an inmate to be able to misconstrue a thank you as conceding that they did you a favor. For instance, "come cuff up", "yes sir no problem" "thanks". No issue there. He's going to cuff up either way, he's only doing himself a favor, and if saying thanks will make it easier on everyone in the future, not a big deal to me.

    Q. Yo, Officer Jeffrey was talking negative about you..
    A. Oh, that's good to know.
    O. If I tell you something, can you keep it between us?
    A. No. There are no secrets between you and I. Whatever you have to tell me, I am gonna to tell my supervisor etc.
    Q. Can you do me a favor?
    A. I do notdo favors for you. I am not obligated to you in anyway. Nor will I be made to feel obligated to you. No Resiprosity here.
    Q. But Officer Jeffrey does it?
    A. I'm not Officer Jeffrey. By the way, I'm gonna be following up with Officer Jeffrey and let him know you're dropping his name.

    1. Inquire more to see why. Is it because
I'm fair but still firm or is it because I'm not doing something right.(granted they aren't going to tell me)
    2. It's situational is it becuse is he refuseing to cuff up and we have a good repor or is it because of something else.
    3. Nope we sure can not
    4. Good for officerJackson.
    5. I got my own back. If anything goes down you go back to your cell.
    6. I don't do favors but if there is something that you need like indegint supplies then I can see what I can
    7. Good, I like my supervisor anything he tells me is a learning experience.
    8. Well I guess that officer Jackson is different then me. He may let you do things and I may do things different.

    1. I would think to myself I have gotten too relaxed with that unit, but still ask why because sometimes inmates like when there’s an officer present that can actually do the job.
    2. Depending on the context maybe thank them, but remind them I don’t do favors in return and don’t owe inmates jack.
    3. No, there’s no secrets or privacy in prison.
    4. Officer Jackson is entitled to his opinion and it’s not good practice for him to be saying anything about other officers in front of inmates, IF he actually said anything at all.
    5. I appreciate the gesture, but I can handle it myself, if not I have a whole line of officers that have my back.
    6. I don’t do favors, you want a favor done, there’s a kiosk you can ask the guy who’s job it is to do your favors. If you don’t wanna ask him it’s probably something you shouldn’t ask for, therefore I won’t do it.
    7. Why do I need to be careful if I’m doing my job? You’re the ones who need to be careful.
    8. Last I checked the name on my shirt wasn’t Officer Jackson, I’m here, for the next 8-16 hours this is MY house. MY rules.

I always make sure I do my job fairly and ethically. or I would say, why is that?' and then address any inference if there was any to make sure any other prisons listening were clear on my boundaries. 2. Depending on what it was, 'I appreciate that John, but you know what is required of you here and this is for your benefit and not mine' 3. ' would you like to give me a bit more information about what you are asking, so I can better understand if I am able to help you with this or not ' 4. 'that must have been the day he was talking shit about you too' - No, I'm kidding HAHA. ' Thanks John. I am confident officer Jackson holds himself to the appropriate standard of behaviour, but if you have a formal complaint you would like to make then I will be sure to make sure thats investigated' 5. 'Can you explain this comment a little more to me, please? Should I be concerned for my safety?' 6. ' What are you asking me to do? I'm not comfortable with the word 'favour' but if there is a way I can help or support you within my ethical and professional duty then I will.' 7. 'I'm not sure what you mean, I always welcome the presence of my supervisor. 8. 'Are you telling me that Officer Jackson doesn't follow policy and protocols?'
