My 1986 RX7 was a car I can never mentally let go of because it was a dream to start and drive. I sold it to an old friend when it still drove like it was brand new with over 187,000 miles. My friend's wife sold it behind his back when he was on an oil exploration ship, BITCH. I used Mobil One from the day I bought the RX7 in January, 1986. You do a great job talking about the the magnificent Mazda RX7. Thank You.
Switchblade Minerva 86gxl was my first car. It was a horrid mistake lol. But I can't shake it either. I'm on the hunt 20 years later for another......to ls swap!! Lol
Everyone complains about the fast speech yet I don't think I've learned this much about a car I've researched over the years in such a short amount of time! Great video and extremely informative. It took me a long ass time of forum hunting and many useless threads/videos that didn't get the the point or had too many opinions. Thank you for quality video!
You forgot one important thing. The A/C control module goes bad. It's almost always a bad solder joint. Reflow solder on the boards. Good to go. Another thing is the wiper controls. Usually a bad relay. Either replace them or take them apart and sand and clean the contacts. Also, water cools much better than anti-freeze. Water conducts heat away from the engine much faster. If you do run water only add a water soluble oil. It lubes the water pump. Something like water wetter works very well. It breaks down the surface tension of water and inhibits air bubbles from forming on the hot surfaces. The water flows over and cools much better. You could see a difference of 20 degrees. I have seen these engines go 400k miles before needing a rebuild. Most important thing you should know about a rotary engine, wait until it warms and the thermostat opens before revving the engine over 3K. After that good to go and it will redline easily.
so glad you guys are doing these videos im finally going to start building my na fc because you guys actually give enough clear and concise information on everything, never seen this amount of detail in any rotary videos
Love the video! Few things to add to the list about fcs would be the diff mount and door handles, both seem to go bad on many fc's, both went on mine and two of my fiends had many of the same issues
When it comes to the more desirable fd rx7. My main recommendations are having a realistic budget, you will not find a mint condition one for under 10k. The current budget Im setting for myself is around 30k give or take a couple grand. You want a good rx7 with a little blemishes expect to pay 26k. The car isn't cheap but the price for what you get really isn't that bad. If you are younger and have less expenses the car is perfect for you, I plan on taking out a relatively small loan just to get the car and I plan on paying it off early. However if you plan on getting one in 5-10 years, I'm sorry bro at that time point it's gonna be worth upwards of 30k, 35k most likely. As much as I don't want to admit it the prices are going up and if you want one you need to plan to buy it within the next 3 years. It is what it is, collectors driving up the prices of the cars we wanted as kids. Also if you can find some sort of special edition of the car for a good price buy it. Same applies to the fc and the fd. Also if you are patient you can buy it and store it away, there are a couple loopholes in the 25 year rule that pretty much only let you use the car during certain situations. Also if you get one don't go crazy on the mods bro, that's why we have cheap fc's for. Please don't make an fd drift car, just don't. If you read this thanks for your time. I'm 16 working at mcdonalds and saving every penny to buy my rx7. By the end of the summer I should have saved 10k by the end of the year 20k and I will probably have my parents take out loan. The personal finance guys already know how that works, my parents will pretty much own the car and I will give them the money for the bill, they pay it ect. I'm really thankful for my parents though, they are great people. The only reason I even have a chance of getting an rx-7 is because of them
Do any of you guys daily these? I picked up one a month back and used it as a daily since then and it runs great (I'm literally in love with it lol) but it gets so much attention at school and in public im like scared that someone is gonna try and steal it. Anyone else have this problem?

I had to click subscribe real fast, because you showcased an amazing car, and taught me a lot about it that i never knew.... If I do not see you before then, have a great weekend.
the lost generation... my buddy had one and let me drive it, because i had some first gens..... i think i could deal with an FC.... but I am really glad you are posting wisdom to save my bacon......
Hey bro I had a 10th anniversary for 19yrs, there were actually only about 1100 made. Each dealer got only one in 88, couldn't order one if you didn't get it. Love that you kept the right wheels on it!
i appreciate the response, and maybe its just me but its not so much about the speed of your talking its just sometimes slurred together if that makes sense? not at all trying to talk shit. just constructive criticism
When you were talking about the smooth revs, I remember from a couple decades ago, the 4250 rpm hiccup. I don't recall much about it but it wasn't a major issue as in rebuild or a system being in need of replacement; as mine did it, researched about it, and it wasn't deemed something that needed immediate attention and it never caused a problem with reliability while I owned it.
Great video! I too have an 88 10th anniversary FC. The other commenters basically covered everything I could think of to add, door handles, wiper switch etc. if I can add anything it's that a good warm up and warm down of the engine, pre and post use is the difference between getting 3,000 and 300,000 miles out of the engine. Also they burn oil fast so always watch your levels.
Great info Kenny, I have to admit I do get lost a little when you talk so fast but I generally understand and its not really an issue. I enjoy your videos. Viva la rota

I miss my 10th anniversary edition that I bought new. Had the peeling paint too when I let it go in 99. Leaky injectors (and young kids) ultimately caused me to get rid of it, as it would not start when it was warm.
I bought a new one in 1988. 3 years later the dealer replaced the engine block. Drove it 5 miles after picking it up and had flames 20 feet in the air.
Wow! dude that onomatopoeia compression test you proposed is... right! It`s really nice to hear your fast talk. I`m not in rotary but I think you give out alot of helpfull info. Cheers.

Hey man.. Awesome video. Im looking at picking up a 1990 RX7 GTU series 5 i believe. I am not sure if its the S or not from the pictures. SO the guy says its his every day driver. Its got 128,000 miles. I have not seen it yet but trying to get the owner to make time to show it too me. I have a garage at my house and i went to school for auto mechanics. i can do most things but i never worked on , drove or even really seen a rotary engine or a RX7 up close. The thing is now i found one that needs some love and i have always wanted one. The guy is asking $1500 or best offer. This will be a learning curve and plan to watch more of your videos. Im in the South Carolina myrtle beach area. Down here we have a track we can drift at. The track is called Myrtle beach speedway and is run by MB DRIFT. As far as checking compression on it.. I do not have the compression tester. I dont think the guy will let me start messing with the car before i buy it. So really i gotta drive it and see how it runs. if he lets me drive it ill tell him i gotta get it to red line. As far as this engine i am going to check for all the leaks you said. im going to see what the oil pan looks like and hope we can make a deal. I dont mind fixing little things but i do not want to pull the motor. I can if i have too but i do not want to .. i just want to clean the car up and make it a nice weekend car . I dont plan on racing or driving it right away. I would like to road race it at a parking lot event. You can find me @ facebook.com/ccmobiledetailingLI
0:30 I laughed so hard when you said that... I have a Mk1 MR2 that I love, but there's no arguing - the ideas and styles of the decade was amazing, but they just used the WORST materials to build shit with. Everything breaks, rusts, leaks, perishes and shit just dies on you.
These car rot away because the sun roof water drains into the body work and rots the sills. I would redline engine daily, warning horn goes off. If the car doesn't start straight off, walk away, any prolonged cranking means rotor seals failing. I even got a failed engine running by pouring some water in to get compression.
My 10AE is getting a rebuild because of oil control rings. That sounds bad...Rebuild was the expectation and the goal is to look like a stock 10AE but blow away a stock FD.
I had a 1990 rx7 (S5) and another thing to look for in the interior is a pretty obvious one but the retractable seatbelts! They go out pretty commonly. and if it was fixed look at the pillars and check if they were cracked. my driver side went but luckily it retracted almost all the way back.
I've had 4 2nd gen and not one of them had a smoothly functioning sunroof. My last was a 10th Anniversary. That car is now on my wifes ring finger. Happily married, but damn I miss that car...
bro... s4 fc has drivers rear quarter rot like hondas pass rear.. If you find an S4 with no rear quarter panel rust, knock it out, capture it, and take it back to us so we can study it.
must not be in a salt state. upper midwest S4's are usually rusted back there up here. Not all, but the ones that have seen snow are a guaranteed for some rust. I got lucky with my 34k mile original unicorn that I found in iowa on the cheap. S5 Tii swap coming in the not so distant future for it. Have everything sitting in the garage for it, just need the ecu and to rebuild the keg itself.
Great vid and lots of useful info for potential buyers. Personally i just want an FC with a super clean body and a busted engine, so its cheaper, coz i plan on swaping a 20B in there :P
extremely informative like always, thank you. quick question, since you brought up the smoke. im new fc owner. my car does throw white/blue smoke on cold start, well at times. but aftef warming up nothing. revs up nicely but does throw smoke when i red line it. my car was sitting for 8 years before i bought it. you thing it might be carbon build up?
It is normal for a rotary engine to let out a few puffs of oil smoke (grey, dark blue) when it is started. This is due to the side oil seals staying in one position and allowing oil to seep past. It isn't anything to really worry about, as long as it does not continue for more than a few seconds. If it does, suspect the oil o-rings as starting to wear/fail.
I was saving my money to buy a1988 or 1990 fc last year because it cost about 4-6 thousand dollars but now the car increase to 10-20 thousand dollars. I was mad because I have enough money to buy it but than it increase the price. So my question is what made the the car increase the price?
Adam Griffin that takes quite a bit of money to do and I personally don't think it's worth it. Don't get me wrong, it's cool and the engine has way more HP but I'd rather stick to the NA 13B from an S5 than a twin turbo 13B.
That car is a bit rough. I have 2 mint 10AE's. I drive them daily no issues, none stock. One has 120k. The other 85k. And yes. I have changed the dampeners.
I guess I have a quick question. I'm looking at an 88 Rx7 10ae as a trade for my sc400. And because I want more of a track car i am considering it. And was wondering your thoughts on rx7 track/autocross car. Also lets say i wanted to make 300 whp. What i'm I looking at todo? I say 300 because i've been told that's a good number to keep a 13BT at? also the car has 130k on it the guys says its been rebuilt. All of this is if the engine has good compression.
Dam I wish I would have had this video before I bought my 91 NA with bad compression :( best tip- take the car to redline during the test drive!! And of course compression test
Good stuff RM. I may have missed it, but I don't think you mentioned that you're running an S6 REW engine, ..or is it the S4 keg but with the S6 FMIC and intake?
@BROTORS I'm looking at picking up an 86 fc rx7. It isn't wanting to start right now. I had been planning on getting it for a project car. Would it be worth spending the money on it as a project car?
Have any more tips? Share them below!
(Yes, I missed focus in the first 2 shots.)

Wiper switches are pretty terrible in these cars too. I had an 89 and a 90 and neither one worked correctly.

You can find me @ facebook.com/ccmobiledetailingLI
hey there, mind telling me where are some places I can buy an rx7 fc? carsforsale and cargurus provide nothing and I really want a turbo fc. Thanks
rx7club.com or the RX7 facebook group.
I got mine off of Craigslist, but it all depends on region. Also, beware of shady sellers/scammers.
Are you still looking for a Rx7 in excellent condition? I know we're one is at garage kept with very low original miles with leather interior
cool breeze still available?
@@coolbreeze5661 email me ohlobang@gmail.com
Consistently low compression (4bar in my case) on 1 rotor= rusted thru iron/s and possibly weak apex seal springs
yo what's the camera?THE SHOT LOOKS LIT AF
0:30 I laughed so hard when you said that... I have a Mk1 MR2 that I love, but there's no arguing - the ideas and styles of the decade was amazing, but they just used the WORST materials to build shit with. Everything breaks, rusts, leaks, perishes and shit just dies on you.
These car rot away because the sun roof water drains into the body work and rots the sills.
I would redline engine daily, warning horn goes off.
If the car doesn't start straight off, walk away, any prolonged cranking means rotor seals failing.
I even got a failed engine running by pouring some water in to get compression.
Great content buddy!!! Keep it up really informing content here thanks!!!!
My 10AE is getting a rebuild because of oil control rings. That sounds bad...Rebuild was the expectation and the goal is to look like a stock 10AE but blow away a stock FD.
So much good information, thank you so much!
I had a 1990 rx7 (S5) and another thing to look for in the interior is a pretty obvious one but the retractable seatbelts! They go out pretty commonly. and if it was fixed look at the pillars and check if they were cracked. my driver side went but luckily it retracted almost all the way back.
i adore these videos btw man! looking to buy another n/a fc. such a blast to drive!
I’m buying one for my channel this week
I've had 4 2nd gen and not one of them had a smoothly functioning sunroof. My last was a 10th Anniversary. That car is now on my wifes ring finger. Happily married, but damn I miss that car...
I would love to see a fd version of this video
Yea bro! Drop in the KC hat...love it.
Thanks for the video. I might have an opportunity to buy a 1990 convertable, so am looking out for any pointers.
I want one so bad still saving up 🙏
if you buy a rotary. thats a major issue
this guy: *tells me what I need to look out for when buying an RX-7*
me: “Bold of you to assume I’d buy one domestically.”
a pity that there isnt any rx7 for sale in Latvia :(
bro... s4 fc has drivers rear quarter rot like hondas pass rear.. If you find an S4 with no rear quarter panel rust, knock it out, capture it, and take it back to us so we can study it.
I actively own 3 S4s with zero rust lol.
must not be in a salt state. upper midwest S4's are usually rusted back there up here.
Here in Soviet NJ, nothing lasts, rust belt plus excessive use of potassium chloride on the roads.....
thanks for this video man, i love fc3s
I've never owned one, i just need it to run long enough to get home so i can LS swap it
Great vid and lots of useful info for potential buyers.
Great information, consider SLOWING down how fast you speak so that it’s easier to hear and absorb the information.
Rough idle? Seen this in an ad, yet he says the engine was rebuilt
Do you know anywhere too get the exterior trim, and front and rear bumpers i'm in need of some. Great Video
S4 or S5?
S4
just subscribed, and am looking forward to more of this good content 👍👍
So basically you'll want to check everything on a car that was built in the 80's, like any car you are planning to purchase from that time period.
I was saving my money to buy a1988 or 1990 fc last year because it cost about 4-6 thousand dollars but now the car increase to 10-20 thousand dollars. I was mad because I have enough money to buy it but than it increase the price. So my question is what made the the car increase the price?
i miss my 87 fc so much :(
Can you do a vid on swapping 13B FD motor into the FC?
Adam Griffin that takes quite a bit of money to do and I personally don't think it's worth it. Don't get me wrong, it's cool and the engine has way more HP but I'd rather stick to the NA 13B from an S5 than a twin turbo 13B.
good point.
That car is a bit rough. I have 2 mint 10AE's. I drive them daily no issues, none stock. One has 120k. The other 85k. And yes. I have changed the dampeners.
What would you think of a 1988 Mazda rx7 swap with a 1jz or 2jz turbo engine…
i had a 87 rx 7 black beauty custom wheels
any ambitious 18 year olds who want a lightweight 90's sports car, other than a na miata?
Lmao me
I had the fully loaded all ops gxl. Nice car but non turbo. White color.
Where'd you get The shirt my man
Man where did you get that shirt? great vid as usual.
Alex Martinez lmao the last time I redlined my FC one of my gaskets in my exhaust system blew up.
Very informative as always!
Can you buy rotary compression testers at any auto parts stores? Or do you have to order them online?
im buying a abused abandoned fc, wish me luck on the probably rebuilt. im a highschool student, any advice appreciated
i have a 88 vert. i have an engine sitting in storage for when this one finally goes lol.
I am looking to buy a 1988 RX7. It has a slow coolant leak. Can't tell where it is coming from. I am just looking to buy it. Should I be concerned?
Good stuff RM. I may have missed it, but I don't think you mentioned that you're running an S6 REW engine, ..or is it the S4 keg but with the S6 FMIC and intake?
bbrudnic it's a 13B-RE with ported REW intake
AH! Thank you! ..Just watched another one of your videos where you talk about the engine more.
I wish I could find those 7 poke rims (Not the 10th Anniversary White)!!! I have the 10 pokes and they're not that good looking!
hey Kenny love your work
@BROTORS I'm looking at picking up an 86 fc rx7. It isn't wanting to start right now. I had been planning on getting it for a project car. Would it be worth spending the money on it as a project car?
I have a 2001 mustang GT that Imy not working and I’m trying to trade it to someone that have a RX7 87 and it has a oil leak should I trade it ?
