- What can be said about Joost Van Der Westhuizen? He is arguably the greatest scrumhalf in Springbok history. He scored an amazing 38 test tries, a record for a scrumhalf and one which will be difficult to beat.
He is a World Cup Winner and he showed the world how to tackle Jonah Lomu head on. He was the winning captain in two Currie Cup finals (1998 & 2002) and he also won a Tri-Nations trophy in 1998.

I'm Welsh but I've never seen a better scrum half than Joost. A big man who had speed, strength, flair and an eye for an opportunity rarely seen. Rest in peace Joost, you will always be my number one number nine. Thanks for the privilege of watching you and God bless you and yours.

As a Bok supporter, without being bias, the best scrum half in Springbok history. In international rugby language, a gifted, gutsy rugby genius. What true athlete? We will never forget Jooste Van Der Westhizen for the fantastic entertainment he delivered.
Love it. These documentaries are great. Giving people rare footage that would otherwise be lost to the ages. I just wish it was more documentary-like and not just highlight after highlight -- maybe with teammates and former opponents giving insight and reflecting on the player's career and personality. Another point I'd like to make is that, in my opinion, rugby back before professionalism was better than it is today -- more captivating. No shoulder pads, no over-muscled gym-rats, no powder-puff tries galore. No advertisements all over the place, and no overblown salaries either. Just grit and tuff, skilled men. Too many matches nowadays too. Years ago the matches were fewer and farther between, and every single one was a spectacle. If a guy got 50 test caps he was practically a god among men. Now, today, 50 caps is nothing. Rugby just isn't the same. I like the old uniforms too.
So sad he couldn't grow old gracefully, to tell rugby stories to his grandchildren: "38 test tries grandpa? Come on, be real, scrum- halfs dont score tries" . And he would just smile knowingly.
That almost brought a tear to me, so sad to hear of his passing and illness.
I'm 5feet 10inches,yet I looked up at him.He had the most admirable of human qualities,courage.What a champion.During him time,there were champion halfbacks but his time is hard to forget because his team was always the winner,the mighty Springboks.RIP Joost,you were a legend.

These highlights don't come close to doing him justice, the try scoring was secondary to everything else Joost did on the pitch, was one of my favourites growing up, that unrelenting competitiveness, man if you could bottle that ........
There have been a slew of great scrummies but i Wouldn’t have anyone else as 9 in my best 15 of all time Unstoppable. Could be an extra flank or wing. Heck theres over an HOUR of highlights of just try scoring !
JVDW is just so good. I wud lik to know the length of his strides (normal) His strides look so deceptive and hides his speed nd he is very fast off the mark . What a super star halfback.

Personally I think Joost was the best scrumhalf in the world considering any scrumhalf from 1980 till when Joost retired from rugby.

The best 9 ever. So strong and can kick, attack, and scored so many tries as 9. He had great vision and versatility as scrum half and elevated the position to what it is nowadays in rugby. RIP Joost because you were simply fantastic

Joost was a great bok and athlete....he was the guy we feared and admired for his toughness and tenacity...a real bokie...taken by a horrible disease to early....he is remembered forever by rugby people as one of the best...and those eyes....
