  • Hi everyone,
The Ludisia Discolor! The first time I ever saw this plant, I think I swooned. Photos don't do this plant justice, it's velvety, and shimmer, and just so gorgeous. You do need it. In this video, I go over the different substrates/"soil" mix I have mine in, humidity, lighting and watering requirements. And what I've learned after having this plant for a year!

I have mine in regular soil and a small glazed clay pot. It is hard to determine when to water it I agree. But it’s growing like crazy. For me the key is orchid spray fertilizer, mine love it.
Mine don’t have any special humidity. My room is at about 51% standard

Yes, the spray orchid fert! What brand do you use?

@@BeesHouseofPlants I use Miracle Grow orchid mist. No rhyme or reason, it was the only brand in the store.

I propagated my ludisia discolor also and have planted it all in regular potting soil plus lots of perlite and it's doing great! Other jewel orchids may be a bit more finicky than this one, but I've treated it like any of my other houseplants. Once the new growth point on the original stem completes its newest leaf, I'm going to chop it again. They are very easy going and I CANNOT over the dark velvety leaves.

I think both varieties I have are pretty easy! Definitely a lot easier than Phalaenopsis for sure haha.

Wow thanks for this video! I’m getting mine delivered today and realized I have made absolutely no research on how to take care of it 😅

I just bought one of these plants and was very excited about its flowering. I got home and realize i had damaged the flower stem and had to discard of it :( i havent yet repotted the plant. is there anything i can do to get a new flowering this season? the flowering stem node is still in tact- just the upper portion with all the buds was broken off. i'm so upset, can i amend this and still get flowers this year?

How long did the ludisia take to root in water? Mine has been in water for 3 weeks and nothing has happened 😭

It can take months. It will root, it just takes a long time. Keep the water fresh.

Main is suffering, I don’t know what I’m doing wrong!
But I’m so glad it’s still alive. It’s almost 4 years and it looks like a baby! It’s not growing 😰

Hmm, I think my best guess is 1, it doesn't like its medium. And 2, maybe not enough fertilizer? But tbh they're kind of slow growers!

I almost killed mine, but I finally got the watering down. Now I let it dry a bit before I water. I have two new stalks, and it is also staring to bloom! Is it getting enough light? I have it in a window sill that gets some afternoon light. I have mine in a potting mix that is heavy with moss. Your comment was a year ago hope it's doing ok!

I had the one you have in the back and it has 2 brown leaves...I’m so worried about it

I might do a video on how to diagnose plant problems next month - but I would check for root health first, if it's not a root problem then probably an environmental issue!
