In this video I'll share the process of how I put together a new watercolour palette using only greens! Get ready for lots of delicious colours, quite a bit of swatching, some satisfying paint-tube squeezing, and finally working on a painting inspired by this palette. I hope that you find it inspiring too!
I watched this video as I did the chores! It inspired me soooo much that I’m already sketching to start on my multi panel altar painting (saivite religion to be clear)! God bless you Natasha! The deep greens on your palette are sooo beautiful! KEEP PAINTING GURL! ✨✨🐢🐍🦎🦖🐊🐸🐉🐲🌵🎄🌲🌿🌱🌳🌴☘️🍀🪴🥦🥬🥒🫑🫒🪀🔋

And you, besides showing all the tubes and the color names, also teach you how to mix and get new colors. You are awesome. You deserve to be very happy. Kisses from a friend here in Brazil.
Well Natasha this is timely, going thru an uncharacteristic green phase myself. I also wanted to tell you I ordered an A.Gallo palette this morning based on your lovely videos. Feels like you just won a prize when the order goes thru, they sell out so fast! Can’t wait until it gets here. Thanks for the lovely recommendations, it really helps to see before you buy.

So beautiful!🌿 You've inspired me to put together different themed palettes as well, last night I began creating a "Moody" palette. Thankyou for being you!💚
That's so brilliant, Lindsay! Have fun with them! Making palettes is honestly one of my favourite things to do; it really inspires me and helps me to think about colour in a different way. 🖤

What this video proves is that the word green is such a loose word for various colours. Some (like that fuschite) are more coolish and some more earthy. I love that Roman smzal green 😍 Winsor green is one of my favorites for mixing
You are tempting me with that Rare Green Earth color. I absolutely love greens and turquoise. One that you don’t have and may enjoy is Cascade Green. It granulated and the pigments split, so you’ll get some light blues and green granulation. Fun to use !!
Cascade Green is currently in my cart on Jackson's! I've been thinking about getting it for ages and added it to the art just a couple of days ago. I can't wait to try it! You should definitely get Rare Green Earth, I think it's a really beautiful colour.
What a nice Birdie!! Your Green pallette is wonderful. And you are absolutely right. They are much more adorable if they're among themselves. It is a whole new approach to a colour group. That's a neat idea, to do a palette focussed on one colour. I was surprised not to see azo green on there; it's a gorgeous yellow-green that doesn't granulate, so it would be a neat one to mix with some of your more blue leaning or dark granulating greens.
Ah, thanks for the suggestion! I should try that. I made this palette using only the greens I already had and I don't own an Azo Green. I'd purchased five greens the other week and it was after seeing how beautiful they looked together that I came up with the idea for this palette! So I decided to go through my entire collection to see which ones went well together. :)
@@NatashaNewtonArt it's a beautiful yellow-green, PY129, and gives granulating colours a luminous glow. Most brands call it green gold, but daniel smith's single pigment one is called rich green gold, and their green gold is a mix. I know you said you don't tend to like the yellower end of greens as much but it's a really great mixing colour and would be a good contrast to the bluer leaning greens in the palette if you ever decide to swap any of those colours out. :)
This video made me so happy!, I love that you have shared the whole process of creating a palette from swatching the paints to filling the pans in the final choice. Again it shows that you have such a great gift for choosing colours and putting them together, and I'm so glad you tried the experiment with adding lemon yellow (naples yellow also produces interesting mixes too, more muted) to get a colour that made it ino the final palette. I have loved putting my own palettes together,so thank you for that inspiration, but it made me realise we stop seeing all the colours we use as we get used to the,but creating themed palettes makes as look at the colours we use again in a whole new way and see new ways of using them too. Thanks Matt! Yes, I'd love to try mixing them with Naples Yellow, and someone else suggested Nickel Azo Yellow as well. Making palettes like this is such a great way to see colours with fresh eyes, as you said. I'm so pleased that you've found it inspiring and have had so much fun putting yours together as well! Hi Natasha. I have just been painting with my Fuumuui watercolour brush set and had to tell you how fantastic they are. They hold water beautifully so you can paint detail for a long time and they hold a superb point and are not expensive for a set of 7 brushes. They are sable so they will not be to everyone’s taste but I highly recommend them. I bought them off Amazon.👌
Beautiful painting Natasha. I actually find it quite overwhelming having a variety of colours in one pallet, even though I spend a lot of time experimenting and choosing my various pallets. I also have started making pallets selected by the same colours ranges and find it much more inspiring. What started me down this path was the dark pallet you made : Payne’s grey, indigo, black tourmaline, neutral tint etcetera. I’m loving this new way of working. Thank you so much. Ps …love all of your videos 🥰👏🏻👏🏻
Very relaxing video to watch! I'm inspired to try painting with Fuchsite now. I never realized just how minty it can be! I've added SH Forest Blue and Cobalt Green Dark to my wishlist. :D
eeeee this is so lovely!! :D i tend to mix a lot of my greens rather than having them ready to go because it's not a colour i go for much, but i do absolutely love roman szmal's aquarius green. it's a kind of muted sap green with a lovely subtle colour separation, and it actually makes me excited to paint leaves and trees and stuff which is surprising for me wahaha. thank you for another fab video!
I love green so I really really enjoyed this video! As usually you have inspired me to add to my wish list of things to buy 😂 My favourites that I have are DS Perylene green due to its deep colour and undersea green with its beautiful granulation! I like to mix my greens with either Payne’s grey or Titan buff! Thank you for such a great video, it’s lovely to see your painting process 👌🏽xx
Thanks Jeanine, I'm pleased that you enjoyed the video! Ooh, I'll experiment with combining it with Payne's Grey and Buff Titanium too - that will be interesting! 🖤 x
I find perception of color to be really interesting. To me, that whole top row are versions of blue. The first three are variations of robins egg blue. Windsor green is teal. The last two are both turquoise. My brain refuses to see them as green! (Those mixes at the bottom are fantastic.) And the little bird is PRECIOUS.
This video has absolutely inspired me. I love your palettes so much. Recently, I’ve been organizing my materials and whenever I’m painting I reach out towards so many colours at the same time… it can be overwhelming. It would be nice to curate a few colours (permanently in a palette) prior to the creative (madness) process. 🎨 Love your results 🖤
Chrissie, who knew adding Lemon Yellow to ready made greens and other colours would work so well!, an artist friend told me about this recently and I thoght it sounded odd adding it to ready made greens, but I tried it and it does work, and wit other colours too,so it's a new staple in my plattes too now.(matt)
I have a palette for abstract landscapes that’s aaaalllll my greens plus that lemon yellow plus yellow ochre plus ultramarine plus a cereleuean plus mars black. It’s a ton of fun to use.
Rn im watching your green palette in front of the summer forest near my house. It’s so relaxing to hear your voice and so many gorgeous greens and i really enjoy your british accent haha :D
Pretty palette. I get that you were making a "green" palette, but I think I would have just put in the Lemon Yellow when I got down to only having one slot left, that way I'd have mixing options for variations on the greens in the palette. (Nice name, btw :-) )
Your hand is so steady! This piece is absolutely gorgeous. I watched this while playing with my new paints following your advice on a previous video and I am so grateful I did. I got some of the Schmincke granulating paints and they're so much fun. Green is my favourite colour so I've spotted a few more I want to get watching this. Thanks for a lovely video, as always :)
Oh, you got them! I'm so glad! 🖤 I've found that it's really worth investing in the Schmincke paints - they have some gorgeous colours and they're wonderful to work with. Pleased that you enjoyed the video too, thank you!
@@NatashaNewtonArt They're so gorgeous. I definitely plan to get more in the future...the very distant future 😅 , I went a bit mad and bought a lot of paints, not just the Schmincke. Your videos are always great; you have such a lovely soothing voice and your content feels unique. Thank you for sharing your creative process with us 💚
Such a sweet little bird! I love the attention you pay to detail in your artwork. It's funny that the Prussian Green looks so blue on your swatch card. I put mine into a row with all of my blues and in that context it appears to be quite green. It probably is more of an in-between color, a teal or petrol hue. My viridian swatch on the other hand looks much greener than yours, definitely greener than the Fuchsite (moving more towards phthalo green). It's really interesting to see it in such a light wash. Quite a motiviation for me to experiment a bit more with this color.
It's interesting to hear how they vary! I also have the Daniel Smith Prussian Green, which is much more green than the Schmincke version but unfortunately contains PB27 which isn't fully lightfast.
Lemon yellow and perylene green make a pleasing combination. Although it's not my favorite hue by a long shot, I've been trying to warm up to perylene green because it's been recommended by so many artists I follow.
Ok, my shopping basket is oficially overflowing. I love Green! I'm tempted to try a painting using mostly greens myself. Mixing your greens with a different yellow like Naples Yellow could have made for a nicer (not so acid green) , more muted green. I hope you make more videos using this palette.
Your art is very inspiring to me, especially because I tend to gravitate towards the same color, mostly. It's interesting that you chose to do your own mix in a pan, instead of just adding a pan of. lemon yellow.
Thanks Meda, that's lovely to hear! 🖤 I loved the thought of just having a lemon yellow/green mix ready to go, but adding a pan of lemon yellow to this palette could be a very good idea. Although I do love that it's *just* greens!
Your art is so dreamy and fairytale like. I love this little bird! I think the palette is super interesting. I can imagine it working marvels in a full children's book illustration. It is also so different than the way I normally choose my palettes, since I mix a lot to get the shades I like for my subject. I am very inspired by your approach!
Love the idea of a green palette, but then I do love all greens :) You could also just have the lemon yellow pan as the thirteenth colour instead of the ready made mix, to have the option of shifting all the other greens in your palettes by mixing. I thought both the zoisite and perylene mixes were equally beautiful, would have had trouble choosing between them.
Thanks Sigrún! I would have done that (it would certainly make sense), but I wanted the palette to contain greens only. That’s the only reason! The zoisite + lemon yellow mix won in the end purely because of the interesting granulation. 🖤💛
I totally get that, and it is certainly a beautiful palette. I seldom use colours straight from the pan myself, I always have to adjust them and muddy them up a bit especially my beloved greens ;) I love how differently we all use our supplies and find it very inspiring to see different approaches. And thank you for the lemon yellow zoisite/perylene recipies! Never thought of that myself.
Wow, you really have great brushes! I'm always amazed at the amount of detail you're able to get with brushes as my brushes are just not up to the job- I must invest in some better ones I guess. Lovely, calming video💗
You need the Pro Arte Prolene Series 101 Round brushes - they're fantastic and I've been using them for years! (They're also not too expensive!). Thanks Leah, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. 💚
I love your art work. 🎨 I did try to follow this painting with you but I ended up with a patchy background, looks really bad. Could you make a video to show how you color such a flat wash with thicker paint? I couldn't do it !....
Thanks Sara! The background to this piece does have some variation, which I've learned to embrace when I'm using watercolour! If I want a less 'patchy' look, I'll often let the first layer dry and then apply a second layer.
its a really cute painting and it was nice to see the greens all swatched out. I think I have become used to people making note of the pigment numbers at this time, so that was the only thing that could have been helpful as well (but still lots of good info in this video)
Thanks, I'm glad that you thought there was lots of good info in the video! Yes, I didn't write down the pigment numbers this time as these were just quick swatches and experiments for myself really, and I thought I'd film the process to share.
This is uncanny - I am right at this moment watching your latest video! I'm tucked up in bed, it's really cosy because I'm listening to the rain falling outside, and I saw your video and thought, "perfect!". I'll go back to watching it now... :)
Thanks Christine! It's a Pro Arte Prolene Series 101 Round, size 4/0 (0000). I sometimes use the 3/0 (000) too as there's not much difference between them. But they're the best brushes I've found for details!
Natasha, here is a hint: Just before you take the tape off your work, run your blow dryer or heat tool over the tape. It won't take much for the heat to loosen the tape thereby letting you take it off without damage to your paper or artwork. GOD BLESS.
Thanks Miriam! 🖤 I do this sometimes but occasionally I get lazy (my hairdryer is in a different room) and hope I can just risk it. Sometimes I can, other times it doesn't work out!
Have you tried mixing greens with nikel azo yellow rather than lemon yellow? Not sure why but I much prefer the greens you get. Amazonite and nikel azo yellow is a fave mix. (Mission gold ‘green gold a good sub for NAY if you don’t have it)
I don't own any Nickel Azo Yellow yet, but I may buy a tube and try it! I also don't have any Green Gold either. I'd be interested to experiment though! I really loved all of the mixes I got with the Lemon Yellow though, except for the mix with Viridian!
@@NatashaNewtonArt I keep a nikel azo in my main palette instead of lemon yellow as also mixes some lovely oranges. Thanks for you wonderful channel it’s given me so many great tips ❤️
Prussian Green is actually a turquoise, historically made of Prussian Blue and a yellow. I am not sure, but I think it is called green in the sense that it is a green shade of Prussian Blue, just as we have Phthalo Blue green shade and Phthalo Blue red shade. The reason why I am not sure about this is because George Field in his Chromatography, published in 1835, mentions: PRUSSIAN GREEN. The pigment celebrated under this name is an imperfect prussiate of iron, or Prussian blue, in which the yellow oxide of iron superabounds, or to which yellow tincture of French berries has been added. However, in 1885, J Scott Taylor (who edited and updated Field’s work and called it Field’s Chromatography) states: PRUSSIAN GREEN Like the preceding (Hooker’s Green) is composed of Prussian blue and gamboge; but contains a very large excess of Prussian blue. It is consequently a bluish-green of the utmost depth and transparency, verging on black in its deep washes. Based on the 1885 edition of Field’s Chromatography, it is obvious that Prussian Green is a turquoise since he is comparing it to Hooker’s Green, which is a proper green and also made of the same pigments as Prussian Green. I am not sure, though, why George Field specifically mentions that the yellow “superabounds” in the paint; that phrasing makes it seem as if Prussian Green has an abundance of yellow and hence is a proper green rather than a turquoise. Winsor and Newton swatches from the late 19th century and early 20th century show Prussian Green to be a turquoise hue. Those of you who are interested may refer to this digital edition of A Descriptive Handbook of Modern Watercolour Pigments, which is a turn-of-the-20th-century Winsor and Newton Publication: archive.org/details/gri_c00033125012285439/page/n3/mode/2up. The Prussian Green swatch is on page 4. This book also contains a lot of the same information from the 1885 edition of Field’s Chromatography. And, yes, I am a pigment nerd 😂
Hopefully my terrible pronunciation didn't spoil your enjoyment of the video. (I spent a lot of time in France for several years, so this may influence some of my pronunciations).
It would be more polite if you to played and pretended you're a painter in the privacy of your own home- rather than expect others to watch your shame. Must you expose yourself in public? You can be sure I did not watch this: worry not.

My favourites that I have are DS Perylene green due to its deep colour and undersea green with its beautiful granulation!
You are really good at it. I envy you. I'm drawing and you can't compare to you. It's an artist.
That's very kind of you to say, thank you.
Really lovely, Natasha - thank you very much!
Thanks Susan! 🖤
It is interesting how we all see things differently - I guess that's what makes each person's art unique! :)
Love your results 🖤
Thank you Naelle! I'm so pleased that it has inspired you. I really love this way of working. :)
What a lovely bird! 😍😘 - I would have put the lemon yellow in the palette for more flexibility. 😉🥰
That's a very good idea, but my brain was fixated on it being just greens! 😂
@@NatashaNewtonArt I know, and the Zoisite + Lemon Yellow do make a very nice green, I must say! 😋😀
@@Vanitasmortedigital Yes, if you need a particular tone it should be the easiest thing particularly if you have a one pigment green... 😉😊
@@NatashaNewtonArt yellow is only allowed over for a visit 😂 no sleep overs 😂📒💛
I have a palette for abstract landscapes that’s aaaalllll my greens plus that lemon yellow plus yellow ochre plus ultramarine plus a cereleuean plus mars black. It’s a ton of fun to use.
That sounds great! :)
Rn im watching your green palette in front of the summer forest near my house. It’s so relaxing to hear your voice and so many gorgeous greens and i really enjoy your british accent haha :D
Aw, thank you! 🖤
Thank you for sharing your creative process with us 💚
Thank you so much, Nikki! 🧡
I have my watercolors in the same box from Ikea. 😊
Lemon yellow and perylene green make a pleasing combination.
Although it's not my favorite hue by a long shot, I've been trying to warm up to perylene green because it's been recommended by so many artists I follow.
I think it’s a great colour to have in your palette - it’s quite unlike anything else. 🖤
Ok, my shopping basket is oficially overflowing. I love Green! I'm tempted to try a painting using mostly greens myself. Mixing your greens with a different yellow like Naples Yellow could have made for a nicer (not so acid green) , more muted green. I hope you make more videos using this palette.
Thank you! I'm going to try that as I have Naples Yellow. Thanks for the suggestion! 🖤
💚💚💚
Your art is so dreamy and fairytale like. I love this little bird! I think the palette is super interesting. I can imagine it working marvels in a full children's book illustration. It is also so different than the way I normally choose my palettes, since I mix a lot to get the shades I like for my subject. I am very inspired by your approach!
I'm so pleased that you're inspired, Zoe. Thank you so much! 🖤
To prevent the tape ripping your paper, heat with a hairdryer, it melts the adhesive a bit, making it less prone to rip
I've been doing this for the past few months and it works a treat!
I think you will also like winsor and newton terre verte
I will check it out, thank you! :)
its a really cute painting and it was nice to see the greens all swatched out.
Mmmmmm that granulation 😍
This is uncanny - I am right at this moment watching your latest video! I'm tucked up in bed, it's really cosy because I'm listening to the rain falling outside, and I saw your video and thought, "perfect!". I'll go back to watching it now... :)
@Natasha Newton Aww I hope you enjoyed it! I love getting cozy and catching up with videos 😄
Natasha, would you mind sharing what detail brush you’re using? Lovely piece!
Beautiful colors which paper brand do u use Natasa?
Here I'm using Canson Heritage 300lb/640gsm rough surface. :)
3M makes a "sensitive " painters tape, its pink
Thank you!
You could really have all of your colors in your pal lot. Just blob them off to the side in the mixing tray.
Have you tried mixing greens with nikel azo yellow rather than lemon yellow? Not sure why but I much prefer the greens you get. Amazonite and nikel azo yellow is a fave mix. (Mission gold ‘green gold a good sub for NAY if you don’t have it)
Ooo just tried it with Fuchite and also lovely and fresh but not overbearing (like I find it is with lemon yellow)
I think sap green uses nickel azo pigment to give you an idea of the richness, it’s almost luminous.
Prussian Green is actually a turquoise, historically made of Prussian Blue and a yellow. I am not sure, but I think it is called green in the sense that it is a green shade of Prussian Blue, just as we have Phthalo Blue green shade and Phthalo Blue red shade. The reason why I am not sure about this is because George Field in his Chromatography, published in 1835, mentions:
PRUSSIAN GREEN. The pigment celebrated under this name is an imperfect prussiate of iron, or Prussian blue, in which the yellow oxide of iron superabounds, or to which yellow tincture of French berries has been added.
However, in 1885, J Scott Taylor (who edited and updated Field’s work and called it Field’s Chromatography) states:
PRUSSIAN GREEN Like the preceding (Hooker’s Green) is composed of Prussian blue and gamboge; but contains a very large excess of Prussian blue.
Thank you for such interesting information!
@@NatashaNewtonArt A pleasure 😊
You missed swatching Winsor Newton Aqua Green or was that too blue?
I noticed that too. That color s amazing and I bought it because of her video.
I don’t have any left - I’d already used the entire tube (I only had a 5ml) in my other palettes! That’s the only reason, because I LOVE that colour.
Why didn’t you just pop a pure lemon yellow pan in so you can mix with any of the greens on he go
That would certainly be a good idea, the only reason is because I wanted this to be a palette of greens only. 💚
Zoisite isn't French, it's pronounced "zoy-site," like toy or coy.
Hopefully my terrible pronunciation didn't spoil your enjoyment of the video. (I spent a lot of time in France for several years, so this may influence some of my pronunciations).
@@NatashaNewtonArt LOL never! Besides, I'm Canadian, so I'm used to it ;p
It would be more polite if you to played and pretended you're a painter in the privacy of your own home- rather than expect others to watch your shame. Must you expose yourself in public? You can be sure I did not watch this: worry not.
I believe you should be able to fit 15 half pans in that tin btw, not just 14. I have 15 on mine.
