Most def! They sold me on Cartmans business so well and when Kenny's sickness gets mentioned it was like a punch to the gut.

Playing Kenny's death completely straight is one of the cleverest things Matt and Trey have ever done
It's really interesting that you're watching this episode after watching the superhero trilogy. Since it was revealed in that trilogy that everyone's memories get wiped upon Kenny's death, the cast's reactions in this episode make a lot more sense.
What's more, I think that *this* is the death that got Kenny to realize that nobody remembers the times he gets killed. Because a little more than a season ago, Kenny was ranting to Stan about how nobody seems to care when he dies, so there clearly had to be something between that episode and the Mysterion episodes that got Kenny to figure out the truth. And him being gone for an entire year after seeing everyone grieving over him, only to show up with barely any reaction? That's probably where it clicked for him.
well cartman remembers as shown in cartman land and a couple other instances but this is very true
@@eggsbenedict9095 i hope its canon that cartman is the only person who remembers (besides timmy, who gave that kenny parka to jimmy) but he is just such an asshole and a bad friend he doesnt do anything about it
Cartman's a strange case. We do know he remembers (likely because of having Kenny's eyes as a result of a transplant, and later getting possessed by his soul), but it's entirely possible that he--like us, the viewers--just accepted his frequent deaths as "something that happens." As in, he may not be aware that other people flat-out don't remember, and that he's just following everyone else's lead by not making a big deal out of it.
While this time was different in the sense that it took MUCH longer for Kenny to actually die (over a period of multiple days, as opposed to between milliseconds and several minutes), I do think that this episode shows how (in a very twisted way) Cartman does care for Kenny. If it was about selling the fetuses from the start, there wouldn't be any reason for Cartman to tell Kenny that he's his best friend, and that he plans to find a cure for his illness.
My guess is that either his *original* goal was to save Kenny and later got sidetracked upon finding out how stem cells worked, or he only changed to his "Shakey's Pizza" plan after Kenny died and would no longer have any need for them.
@@shukuchishikeishuu9540my interpretation of it was that cartman thought Kenny would come back so he used the stem cells for Shakey's instead of Kenny. Kenny and cartman are very clearly best friends and Cartman's lack of ever caring for Kenny's well being kind of shows to me that Cartman knows
@@vivimos_en_una_sociedad7758 Well Cartman is definitely an asshole hes much less of one to Kenny we have seen them being nice to each other multiple times as they are best friends. Cartman is an asshole but Kenny and his mother seem to be the only people he can actually be nice to.
Yup, I'm in tears. I was living vicariously through Stan that whole time. That's a hell of a grief, and Stan's denial of Kenny's inevitable fate left me a sobbing mess.
Rewatching this definitely made me cry. Stan being angry at his friend for leaving is a legitimate part of grieving, and Cartman having real emotion and being sad for someone else, and Kyle seeing that and giving him a hug to comfort him was soo wholesome. That definitely made me cry. But the thing is, I know Kenny will come back, I know it is not a permenant loss, I have seen all South Park Episodes, it is just written so well and so out of character for Cartman, and so realisitic for Stan, it hits hard.
Kyle is a warrior. He stood by keenly t’il the very end and heard his last word.
Kenny has died so many times, but this was the most emotional. I started crying more than I expected. R.I.P Kenny😢😢

they were really gonna kill off kenny for good when this episode first came out. they did most of the whole next season without kenny in the show and they said they were done with him because they couldn't think of any more material to write for him. then out of nowhere they brought him back and were like "yea we changed our minds, kenny is back" LOL.
This episode really shows how smart the guys behind South Park are. Using Kenny (who always dies) to bring up a serious subject is genius and so is the decision to play all the hospital scenes completely straight with no jokes undermining it. Really smart writing.
And they do it again in Best Friends Forever. At least Kenny comes back after that episode.

When I first saw this episode I found it funny because we all know Kenny comes back. So I found they reaction more funny than they usually: they B-Tards line but I didn't expected Matt and Trey to actually go with it and leave Kenny dead, at least not for a whole season...

@@DisfunktionalTV yeah I think he doesn't appear in season 6 either. If you remember in Simpsons Already Did It (the episode with the sea monkeys) they were hanging out with Tweek, that's because he was Kenny's replacement. I think in that same episode they were hanging out with someone else at the beggining but they kicked him because he wasn't a good replacement although I'm not sure if that was in that episode

@@DisfunktionalTV Their endgame was to get Butters into the main spotlight on top of them running out of ways to kill Kenny; they were even going to originally kill Kyle off because he was too similar to Stan but they realized as best friends Stan and Kyle have a lot in common so they went with Kenny

I remember when this episode was first airing, how big of a deal it was, people at the time werent sure if kenny actually died for real this time or not, really interesting era
South Park is often underrated for how well they can write emotional episodes, Getting Older is another one
The fact that young children are really dying at a early age, makes the episode even sadder
This was the second to last season of season 5 and Butter’s Very Own Episode is the last…. Then yes Kenny remains dead for the entire season 6. It was that time and when the other kids in the school really had a lot of their character’s truly start to develope. Particularly Butter’s.

Its worth mentioning that in early south park, kenny died in every episode, supposedly the creators got tired of figuring out ways to kill him so they killed kenny permanently in this episode.
After this, kenny wasnt in the show until the last episode of season 6 where they decided to bring him back but without the huge focus on his death.
14:28 really hurts when Kenny gets his hopes up for Stan to show up

This was supposed to be the episode where Kenny died permanently. This is why they had Butters and then later Tweek replace him for several episodes until they decided to bring him back.

Kenny was meant to die here, as in never come back, but he came back a season later because they seemingly were a bit lost since every other episode was "the boys build a ladder to see him" or "cartman channels him"
The fact when the make a wish people came in Kenny said, "Stan?!"
So what’s interesting is that this was the episode where Matt and Trey killed Kenny permanently (at least until “red sleigh down” where they brought him back to life. They killed him permanently because they were getting tired of thinking of ways to kill him. That’s also why he stopped dying every episode when he returned

The mood of this episode is completely different from the rest of the episodes. I think thats a big part of why this episode is so emotional. Even though Kenny before this always came back to life after dying, this time it feels different. More serious. Stan running out of the hospital because he can’t handle seeing Kenny like that, and Cartman and Kyle hugging and crying together also got to me. Even though I know Matt and Trey end up bringing Kenny back after this, its still such a sad episode.
The window in Cartman's room is an animation error. That would be seeing through the hallway, not the outside.
Awesome episode but the fact that Kenny comes back either way is just wow. I truly thought he was for real gone with the music and sadness 🤣
Worst part about this episode is that I actually believed Cartman cared about Kenny and wanted to save him, I was Kyle at that moment lmao

I’m assuming someone has said this already but in this episode or somewhere around this episode, Matt and Trey originally were going to kill off Kyle permanently because they thought he was too similar to stan, but for whatever reason they decided to go back on that plan
They realized that Stan and Kyle weren't that similar as the years went on and Kyle was the major protagonist to Eric
now do all of season 6, one of the best seasons ever.
For any information Kenny Actually does in this episode until the end of the season where he comes back like nothing ever happened Creek or butter will be the new Kenny after this episode because the kid will find a replacement and Cartman 🤣 oh wow he likes Nesquick
