My favorite Genesis Album "Selling England By The Pound" ... !!

I'm 23 years old. I did listen to Genesis past year but man, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was something else, it kicked out Close To The Edge from my Top 1 album. The lyrics, you could make a movie with them. Btw, "It" is underrated. Keep it up with the outstanding content. Cheers from Argentina

Thank you!!! Yeah there really is something special about The Lamb. The atmosphere. It feels like New York. It’s just brilliant. ❤️❤️🇺🇸🇦🇷

It is a very good song. Check out Three Sides Live with It/Watcher of the Skies and In the Cage. It is my view Collins does a better job singing them than Gabriel. particularly In the Cage.

Coño!! Me too, 22 and listening Genesis since post covid and The Lamb its my fav album (Only Second because of The Empyrean by Frusciante). Its really magical and for some reason I really engage with the lyrical and musical narrative of the récord. Saludos desde Canarias (España) mi hermano hispano!!!!!

Genesis may be one of the bands with the least amount of arguing about the rankings. Sure, we might quibble on an album here or there trading a couple of positions but by and large this is spot on.

    • @TheProgCorner
      @TheProgCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

It’s the easiest discography to rank for sure. The top five get shuffled around a bit but every list I’ve seen is kinda like mine. Boring!!! 👍

    • @johndyslin798
      @johndyslin798 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Not too sure about that. There are lots of fans that prefer the later stuff to the earlier stuff. There are fans who hate anything after Gabriel left. The horrors! They went more pop! I like lots from 1970 to 1992. Even the "pop" stuff! Anyway, my ranking:
      15. From Genesis to Revelation
      14. Calling All Stations
      13. Trespass
      12. Nursery Crymes
      11. We Can't Dance
      10. And then There Were Three
      9. Fox Trot
      8. Genesis
      7. Lamb Lies Down (lots of good stuff, lots not so good)
      6. Invisible Touch
      5. Abacab (highly underrated and misunderstood)
      4. Duke
      3. Selling England by the Pound
      2. Wind and Wuthering
      1. Trick of the Tail
From 11 on the rankings can always change

    • @TheProgCorner
      @TheProgCorner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You make a good point. I always assume my audience is old and Gabriel era centric. Most Genesis fans prefer the Collins era - based on record sales, tour receipts and airplay…

    • @johndyslin798
      @johndyslin798 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@TheProgCorner I'm 59. Duke was my introduction to Genesis. Then came Abacab. Friend of mine introduced me to TOTT, W&W and And then there were 3. Liked everything heard. Genesis album sinched it that Genesis was my favorite band and it's remained that way. Didn't always like some of the earlier stuff but lots has grown on me. In the Cage (which I think Collins does a better job singing than Gabriel). Carpet Crawlers, Watcher of the Skies, It, Fountains of Salmacis are some of my early favorites. I also love Gabriel and Collins solo stuff as well as Mike and the Mechanics. I don't think any band (including the Beatles) has produced more in total than Genesis and the solo stuff. Some of the best musicians of any band. Banks one of the top keyboardists, Collins one of the top drummers, Hackett a very good guitarist of which there are so many, and I think Rutherford is one of the most underrated guitarists/basists in music. I like new Genesis. I like old Genesis. Their concerts are amazing. For years Home By the Sea is one of my favorite live songs, but recently Abacab (in particular the 1987 Wembely performance) is just out of this world. It is a musical delight to the ears!

    Hey Scott,
I just discovered your channel. One of my favorite all-time bands is Yes. It took a while for me to become a Genesis fan. I remember Duke when it came out. It wasn’t until years later when I checked out the 3 cd set. Disc 3 had the Peter Gabriel era on it exclusively and it was my favorite of the 3! Having, in addition to Yes, been an ELP and Rush fan, I think it was meant to happen!
Anyways, we all have our rankings and you stated well why each one was at the position you chose and you made it entertaining! I look forward to finishing the Yes rankings!

Great Genesis Ranking Video! The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Genesis Live both were on a cassette tape that was given to me by a friend back in the late 90s, which blew me away hearing Peter Gabriel Genesis for the first time, and those two albums are my sentimental favorites. I then went on to buy as much Genesis as possible! All of my Peter Gabriel Genesis is on CD, and my Phil Collins Genesis is on Vinyl! They will be missed 😢

Man, you're the best! That was fun. Brought back so many fond memories. My journey with Genesis started with "Trespass", and like you with "Genesis Live", I stumbled across it in my local record store not knowing a thing about them either. That's how it was back then, living in The States of course. Little did I know at the time just how impactful that purchase would become, it literally opened a whole other world for me. Think that was 1971 when I was in my late teens.
Overall, my favorite Genesis albums are the Gabriel years as well, though I love TOTT & W&W too. Best way for me to rank them is based on just how often I return to them. That being said, here are my top five: 1. SEBTP 2. Foxtrot 3. TLLDOB 4. W&W 5. TOTT.
One last thing Scott. You mentioned the incredible ending to W&W as one of their great moments. With that being said, here's something especially for your listening/viewing pleasure. Definitely worth checking out... for ALL fans of Genesis... th-cam.com/video/KhpY5cUQuI4/w-d-xo.html

Your enthusiasm is infectious, and shows your total love of the music! Glad you had Lamb at the top. My choice as well. I always found it amazing that it was made in such strained circumstances, with Peter's domestic situation and his child etc....that it is not only a double album, but a LONG double album. Yet for me it is perfect. No slightly weaker material at all. And I am not sure I would apply "perfect" to any other Genesis album, as much as I love most of the pre-stadium albums. Though, you know, I am setting a very high bar there :) Brilliant watch, thanks. And Genesis Live was my intro as well. Like you, I saw the cover and thought: this must be interesting with a singer dressed like that! There was no going back....

Your videos are a real treat, and I enjoy your infectious enthusiasm!
I'm glad that you rated And Then There Were Three so highly. It's a surprisingly strong album. I like it better now than I did in 1978. Much as I generally prefer Genesis with Hackett and Gabriel to Genesis without, I think And Then There Were Three is a stronger album than Wind and Wuthering, and I play it more often. (Minority opinion, I know!) However, I agree with you about the strength of the suite that concludes side 2 of W and W. It is indeed one of their finest moments.
I would have ranked Calling All Stations higher than you did. (However, I completely ignored it when it was released and only heard it for the first time a few years ago.) It's hardly perfect, but I generally prefer it to much '80s Genesis. I like its moody, brooding atmosphere and it made me a Ray Wilson fan.
    Keep up the great work!

Its great to see a ranking very close to my own opinion. 'The Lamb' was my first Genesis album and will always be my favorite. Too many people approach this album wrongly. Whereas the story is important, its the music that comes first. And it is the music on 'The Lamb' that is absolutely incredible. Gabriel's singing is at its peak here too. I've never understood why some people have a problem with sides three and four. Side three is possibly my favorite side of Genesis music. I would place 'Trespass' above 'Wind and Wuthering' but its a close thing. Apart from that, your list is identical to mine. I still liked the band after Gabriel left but their narrative content suffered. Cheers.

I definitely remix those last 7 Genesis albums depending on my mood. After Nursery Crime Collins drums definitely are something to listen to. I saw them tour the '83 Genesis album and I saw them again for the Last Domino tour in 2022. His son was pretty damn good on the drums in that show. Like you, Genesis Live (1973, but released a year later in 1974 in the US) was my introduction to the band, and also like you it was the album cover that made me buy it. For me, this was bought in 1974, and then I spent the next several months absorbing their entire catalogue in reverse order, culminating in my first Genesis concert, the opening nights of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour in Chicago. I saw night two. The album hadn't been released yet, but an underground radio station had played side one of the album, which I taped and played constantly until the show a week later. I had rarely experienced so much anticipation for a concert before or since, and they didn't disappoint. Even better, they came back to Chicago again at the end of The Lamb tour and played the entire thing as one last hurrah for the US.
    1. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
    2. Selling England by the Pound
    3. Foxtrot
    4. Trespass
    5. Nursery Cryme
    6. From Genesis to Revelation
    7. Wind and Wuthering
    8. Trick of the Tail
When And Then There Were Three came out, I went to see the band and then decided not to see follow them anymore. I had lost interest in what they were doing. On the other hand, I considered Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte (1975) perhaps better than any Genesis album.

Genesis is maybe my second favorite prog rock band. Invisible Touch is actually one of my favorites, and maybe because that was one of my introductions to the band. 80’s era Genesis is good and I don’t think it’s as bad as many say. Foxtrot is probably my favorite. Second favorite would either be Selling England or Trick of The Tail.

I remember really digging Genesis when I discovered Selling England by the Pound, Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme in high school, but The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway really made Genesis become my favorite band. It’s a true tossup for my second favorite between Selling England and The Lamb. One publication, possibly Stereogum, called The Lamb at its best “change your fucking life good”, which, since reading that, has always summed up that album for me.

Just watched your Yes review, and this popped up,..like yourself, my two favourite bands. My first album was Foxtrot, which I bought in 1972. I'd only read about them in the music press, and ,living in England there was not much TV or radio that played prog, so I went down the local Boots,..a large UK chain store which also sold records. I asked the girl behind the counter to put Foxtrot side one on, and went in the listening booth, unsure of what I was about to hear. After 2 minutes of Watcher of the Skies I 'd heard enough, so paid my £2.15p ( I was earning £8 a week at the time, so this was a massive outlay for an unknown ) and rushed home to play the album. The rest is history. I only saw them live once, in 1980, on the Duke tour, at The Mayflower Theatre Southampton, and did go off them a bit on some of the later stuff.

Pretty good rundown. Like they say we all hear things differently. Every album Genesis did had good parts as a whole or some. Here goes.
    1. Trick Of The Tail- Collins and Hackett are amazing and the band solid, The first side takes me away with it and 2nd side rolls out tranquilly nice. So it's my no 1.
    2. Foxtrot- The songs are good. One Of Gabriels best for my no 2.
    3. Selling England By The Pound-Another of Gabriel's Masterpieces
    4. Genesis -83- Really feel the vibe and the songs I relate to how they sound on this album. (minority opinion for the spot) I'm not changing.
5.And Then There Were Three- It is amazing how a band would carry on as much as I love Steve Hackett and they did so well on the album for me. I rebought it recently as I use to have it and remembered how well I did like it.
    6. Nursery Crime- Yea an ok along Gabriel album given to the two that I have at 2 and 3. I like to a degree but just doesn't come to a go to album for me as others.
7, Trespass- I so love this album as the songs roll well with me and Anthony Phillips in the band here is great, I still go to the album that needs the appreciation it has in its sound to me. It's not around in top 5 as you see what proceeds there in this list.
8.Wind and Wuthering- I great sounding follow up to Trick Of The Tail. Starts out weak in first song before in the song it gets better. And the songs are pretty good and a go to album once in awhile. Hackets last before the surprise sounding to me on And Then There Were Three.
9.The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway- I know how iconic people have this high on the list. To me while it is fine indeed and Steve Hackett was in here and Phil in here The next top choice at No 1 would show the solid strength the band without Gabriel would be. I like Gabriel's solo career that would follow anyway and he proved well in Genesis before his pretty nice solo albums especially the first few.
    10. Duke= Pretty nice album to make in the top 10. All the songs don't quite make it for me and as some on the album do.
    11. Abacab- I like some in this album but wasn't an album that made a big impression on me.
12.Invisible Touch -Barely scratches the surface with me as we start going down a rabbit hole and the sound is ok but the songs didn't impress enough to me since that Genesis 83 album. Maybe I'm missing something but just seened a pop lackluster album to me.
13 From Genesis To Revelation-- There are some songs in the psychedelic prog rock sound of this album that may make some psychedelic song lists for me and once in a great great while I can tend to be in that mindset.
14 We Can't Dance- No Son Of Mine and Jesus He Knows Me. good tunes and the rest give or take not as good given what I just listed at this point. But I think there can be another song or two that go beyond the two songs I said. But this could have been the last album but wasn't.
    15. Calling All Stations- What can I tell you? It's last for the reasons of Collins replaced by Ray Wilson not a bad singer and sort of Gabriel like but not able to sing like Gabriel full out and yea the replacement on the drums. Where drums on some spots is not too bad but the songs pretty much lack alot of what Genesis was, So yea it's last.
HMS- the Great live albums you showed the 3 essential albums to have. I currently have that Genesis Live and Seconds Out albums.
Never got to see them but enjoy watching on DVD or online and listening to the music we so love of them. What a long span of time for this band. Will Banks and Rutherford come up with anything in the future from Genesis? Time will tell but we got a good run of music to enjoy for generations. Cheers.🎤🎹🎸🥁🎶👍

What a beautiful world where some people love stuff I don't!
Tier 1: Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot. Magic so thick you couldn't cut it with Excalibur. No greater albums exist.
Tier 1A: Selling England By the Pound. Could have made it but for "The Battle of Epping Forest" which got so theatrical that it forgot to be a song. Firth of Fifth may be their masterpiece.
Tier 2: ...And Then There Were Three and Duke. With both PG and SH gone, they knew they had to find a new sound and what a sound!
Tier 3: A Trick of the Tail and Wind and Wuthering. Great albums, but suffer slightly from the forlorn attempt to be the same band without Gabriel. These two are at their best on the ballads, "Entangled," "Ripples," "Blood On the Rooftops," "Afterglow." Also Trespass. All the greatness that was to come, just not quite fully realized yet.
Tier 4: The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Lord knows I've tried, but I can't make any sense out of this thing; some great music on it, namely, the stuff Hackett still plays, but otherwise, with apologies, I just can't. Also, From Genesis to Revelation. Nothing special, but quite listenable.
Tier 5: Everything after Duke. Don't know, don't care. Most of the hits are bad enough to make me not buy the albums. An exception being "ABACAB," an awesome song that would have been a great addition to Duke.
Never fear, my Yes tiers will be just as unpopular!

Well, Genesis is certainly part of my holy trinity, and I've always lamented that "Calling all Stations" is so disregarded, because it seems to me that if this had been recorded by another band, the reactions would have been quite different. Not to mention some of the B-Sides (Anything Now), too. But I am also able to understand why there are these reactions, though de gustibus...:) Just for quick reference (I've never actually done a thorough ranking), with me it would look like this: 15. Abacab, 14. From Genesis to Revelation, 13. We can't dance, 12. Trespass, 11. Invisible Touch, 10. Duke, 9. Nursery Crime, 8. Calling all Stations, 7. Genesis, 6. The Lamb.... 5./4. And then there were three... / Wind and Wuthering, 3./2. Selling England by the Pound / Foxtrot, 1. A Trick of the Tail.
Though I'm not that sure with the first three...today I would place them all on the pole, tomorrow maybe I'll change it aso. aso. Nevertheless the first one is just something else, a beginning,, Abacab for me is a misunderstanding (There must me some kind of misunderstanding...), the rest is outstanding (of course not every album is pure prog though I respect also clever pop).
But as always, great clip, great ranking - sheer pleasure to watch You! Cheers from Cracow in Poland!

As I wrote in another place, The Lamb has some of the most beautiful and haunting pieces of music, rock has ever given. Thanks for the video!

I have to admit I love Genesis, but I dig Peter Gabriel's "Melt," more. Got the German pressing over here...lol
The first album you held up, I got from a flea market! Gabriel's look on the cover transfixed me for months before I listened at 13 years old. The cover freightened me to some degree, which is hilarious as I was listening to Slayer's Hell Awaits constantly, which to a 13 year old should be scarier than Genesis.

Started with the band much later so my first album was Invisible Touch. Therefore I have a bias towards the Phil Collins side of the spectrum. But going back and discovering the band’s routes really opened my mind to different types of music and I owe it all to them. Genesis sounded the best sonically after Peter left imo, and I prefer Gabriel’s solo stuff generally over his time with the band.
That being said The Lamb is one of the greatest prog masterpieces of all time.

    15. From Genesis to Revelation (Only album I don't care for)
    14. Abacab (4 really good songs, rest were annoying or dull)
    13. We Can't Dance (Like the above, though with fewer annoying songs)
    12. Calling All Stations (I didn't find any of the songs to be grating, and The Dividing Line actually kicks ass)
    11. Shapes (First side is peak 80s Genesis, then falls of a cliff aside from Silver Rainbow)
    10. And Then There Were Three (Solid throughout, but lacks any real standouts)
    9. Foxtrot (Blasphemy! First half to me feels rather weak by the standard of the golden era, and Supper's Ready doesn't fully hit its stride for me until the last 8 minutes)
    8. Invisible Touch (It's just an excellent pop album to me, one of the best in the genre)
    7. Trespass (I've been liking this one a lot recently. If things keep up, I could put this at number 5 in a few months)
    6. Wind and Wuthering (Very good all round, though kind of a messier version of Trick of The Tail)
    5. Duke (Fantastic prog-pop album, it's the go to one for me to suggest if someone is looking to get into them)
    4. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (Consistently very good, though perhaps a bit bloated)
    3. Nursery Cryme (In masterpiece territory now, every song slaps hard)
    2. Selling England By The Pound (Has the greatest stuff that Genesis ever did, but More Fool Me and Epping Forest drag it back into the #2 spot for me)
    1. Trick of The Tail (Possibly the most consistently excellent album I have heard. Every song hits the mark, and is paced wonderfully)
Something that I find curious about Genesis album rankings is that there seems to be more of a general consensus compared to other prog bands about which ones rank highly and which lower down, even if people would have my head for putting Invisible Touch above Foxtrot.

@@TheProgCorner I think Trick is Genesis's most consistent album. Some of the PG-era albums are arguably more cutting-edge and have higher high points, but they have a few fillers along the way. But every song on Trick is very good and often excellent.

Hadn't seen this. Pretty right on in my book. I agree #1 and #2 are tough to rank, but for me it's Foxtrot simply because of Supper's Ready. As a whole album and body of work, then yes, Lamb.
The other thing I'll mention...Calling All Stations. We play almost EVERY track from that album in rotation at Prog Radio. Why you may ask? Because when you hear just one song, mixed in with hundreds of other bands, you realize the songs are quite good. I think it gets a bad rap because it wasn't Phil or Peter, but if you aren't expecting that, and just listen to each song on its own, you may have a different opinion of them. For example, if all those songs had come out on a Ray Wilson album, with Tony and Mike as guest musicians, you'd probably think, "Wow, what a cool Ray Wilson album!" Keep listening to Prog Radio and when one pops up, you'll see what I mean.
