The race thing... I had a friend who was chilling with me from the West Indies, first time in the RD. One day A Haitain guy approached and he started with this race shit to him, he said, "THEY don't like us", referring to Dominicanos not liking black people as a whole. I immediately had to cut him off and kept walking. While walking I asked my friend, you been here a few days, do get the impression that dominicans hate black people? He said hell nah. I told him that not even Haitians sit around talking about race and they get it from Black Americans who come to the RD, so they try to come at anyone who they feel might be black American in order for them to look at them as "Brothers", befriend them and most likely try to hustle them... But it's 100% from what they see in the Media about what black Amercans are focused on and of course when they come to the RD they talk this racism shit. It's crazy!
Unfortunately because of history, race is a constant factor in the U.S. because many people and entities still capitalize on it to keep people divided. The DR collectively is a multi racial society, and it’s rarely the topic of discussion unless it’s brought up by outsiders. We see each other as one as culture and don’t get into race politics. This Is very common in other islands like Jamaica also.
Come to think of it, race issues and conversations can happen anywhere. It is how you react to it. For instance, in the USA there are still people that wake up everyday thinking how to do harm to black person. In Isreal the jews do the same with the arabs and vise versa. The indians want to wipe out the pakistanis, and so on. But in DR, our issues with haitians boils down to our independence from them and their disrespect towards our way life and attempts to harm our prosperity. But vast majority of dominicans can live with haitians in DR just as long they respect our country's laws, traditions, norms, history, and people.
@CristianDiaz-p5g this is correct, we Dominicans welcome everyone and love to share, unfortunately that has become a detriment in case of the illegal over population.

Let me tell you something about Dominican society. The first colony of the Spanish Empire in the 15th century was what is today the Dominican Republic and the first time that Spain brought slaves was in 1503 (the black part of Dominican society does not come from Haiti) when Spain discovered the immensity of the American continent it practically abandoned the island of Hispaniola to its fate, leaving the Creoles, mulattoes and slaves on the island. There was a lot of poverty and the only way to get out of it was through trade between the different peoples of the island. Later there was a great deal of miscegenation among all of them. It is important to emphasize this because in the Spanish colony the one drop rule did not exist and interracial marriage was allowed. Dominicans have literally been marrying different ethnicities and races for more than 400 years, in the 20th century this was prohibited in the USA, in 1606 the devastations of Osorio happened and there was a demonstration against this measure and it was practically the first recorded protest by the creoles of the island who had already been mixing what was created for more than a century was the sentiment of protecting the land where you were born, in 1621 it was the first time that the Spanish crown used the term Dominican, practically referring to the Creole people of the island of Hispaniola, which was made up of the descendants of the Spaniards who stayed on the island, the few Tainos who survived and the blacks. The problem with African Americans is that they want to extrapolate the reality experienced in the English colonies, such as the One Drop Rule and the prohibition of marriage between races, to the entire world. They think that this was the reality everywhere. There was certainly slavery in Spain, but it was very different from the English and French colonies. In short, Dominican society is united by the culture and the land that saw it born, and that is what has created its identity as a society.
it has to do with the two schools of thought regarding racism. English: mixing with other races will taint our blood. Spanish: mixing with other races with purify their blood. that is why the spanish had a caste system and the english did not. as for some poeple from the us coming to the dr trying to look for allies regarding the societal issues they've might have experienced? they are projecting. Dominicans as a society are more united. that is very true. but, there is some discrimination, it's just more subtle. I don't know if this is still practiced but it is my understanding that you have to attach your photo with your resume. that is a type of discrimination. Or having older female family having reactions to black people like they are going to eat them is a form of discrimination. thankfully that last one seems to be limited to the older generation. That last one I've experienced personally. I'm not saying we have neo nazis and kkk equivalent in the DR. What I'm saying is that we are not squeaky clean either. But the biggest problem in the DR is corruption. Getting stopped by the military because they want to check for "illegal arms" aka "help us out" is definitely a problem, but race is definitely one of the least of our problems.
The neighborliness in DR is 100% one of my favorite things. People actually speak and help each other. You actually see your neighbors often too. I feel like we work so much in America that I go can go 6 weeks without seeing my neighbors and we're actually pretty cool with each other. America just keeps ppl busy in a bad way
Third week in Santo Domingo. Taking things slow but enjoying it all. There are some things that are different that I am adjusting to, but not deal breakers. D.R has been good for me. Love yours and wifes videos, been watching for months as preping for this journey.
There is an adjustment period. I was the same way but as you said nothing is a deal breaker for me. Thanks for supporting our channels. Keep enjoying yourself🙏🏾
Welcome go to my country. Breath deep. If you're in Santo Domingo, don't let the traffic overwhelm you. Try the metro at quiet times. Go to la zonal colonial, have some presidente (beer) if you drink, sit at a colmado where they play dominoes. The enviroment is just peaceful all together and can't compare to U.S.
I been subscribed to your channel for several weeks now. I’m enjoying the content! I’ve subscribed to and watch other channels of Americans leaving the US and enjoying their new lifestyle outside the country. I came across your wife page first and said to myself “that man look familiar sitting beside her” clicked and watch the video and your second page popped up and I said “oh that’s Mr all wings everything” 😂😅. I didn’t know he lived outside the US. So now I’m subscribed to both your channels! I’m a young Black male and you’re an inspiration to me for sure to get out of US and travel and set up shop somewhere else! 💯
Your videos are a breath of fresh air! I can relate to your down to earth common sense views. I think that it’s by design to keep the American people divided. There is a lot to like about the Dominican Republic and I am also considering on moving there. Stay safe, stay healthy and stay happy!
Great video! I'm from Miami and when my fiancé who was living in Mexico (he left the US years ago and I left a year ago) came to meet me first the first time we had an event in Aventura so the closest place to get food was the mall. I was on edge the entire time because of the shooting that happened there terrified that at any moment someone could just start shooting. Latin America in general definitely has it's problems, but we don't have to worry about getting shot just for going shopping. And to your point, just because we say we feel safer doesn't mean there's no crime. But the same way I wouldn't go to a dangerous neighborhood or into an active gang war in the U.S. I'm not going to go do it in another country. It makes no damn sense when people say that. ~Amanda
James, you got it so right when you say that dominic ans do not talk about race. I would say that at Least in 75% of Dominican families tere are all types of shades and we all love each other.
Brother, may God Almighty keep you under his blessings! I love the way you transmit your experience living in our (it is yours too), shut, we could be related 😊, remember, in this part of the island our ancestors were brought from mother Africa and in here that black family were break up and the tallest, strongest blacks were shipped to the USA while part of his family remained in this part of the island. Much love Brotherman?
People in America are so asleep and refuse to wake up. I love your videos bro and I always watch because when I'm home I sit back and relax and enjoy my music and my family. Dominicans are Dominicans. There are no black or white. I was raised in New Orleans and it used to be where everyone speaks and it's gone. Now in DR it still exists and I love that.
James, you are a great human being. I am so happy to know you true the way of youtube. I am a Dominican who moved to NY. I really did not know how black I was until I moved to NYC. In DR I was just Dominican. In the USA, I am a black dominican. lol.
Lol...thanks Christian. You are absolutely correct. Once you get to the US you are immediately put into a box. Thats why I love it here although I'm a black American most see me as just a Dominican.
Jay you are a person who is able to think and analyze . Above all, you are respectful. I applaud your content, qualities, and the way of handling different topics.
James your on point again. You know a few Saturdays ago I was talk to one of my sisters from New York on the phone. The conversation came up again about my decision to move to the DR. Panic in her voice. You better know what you doing, you better think about the healthcare in the US versus the DR. Blah blah blah. I took a minute and explain to her my preparation, and all the DR offers , she calm down. People just use old washed up cycled opinions about the DR , most have never been here. Great analysis James. I agree with everything you said. 👍👍👍
Yep that's the case. Most Americans can wrap their head around any country being better than the US because all the propaganda about America being the greatest country in the world.
AGREE 10000%, sense of community it make us different, I live im NY, living same building for almost 10yrs, literaly i only know the super and the assistant, and 1 neighbor because our kids went to Pre K together.
A while ago, your wife posted a video about why you all were moving to D.R. One of the reasons she gave, was that she was worried about your safety (as a black man) in this country. Her concerns were real, and they’re still relevant as it relates to black men here. You’re right about people now being defined by their political views. It seems like some people here are trying to turn back the clock to a time that their forefathers enjoyed. Recently, there have been several lynchings that have taken place down South. People think ex-pats left the Matrix because they’re scared to live here, but the reality is, some of them left because there’s a difference between living and existing. (Peace is harder to find than love.) I tell bruthas all the time, “Just because you were born and raised here, doesn’t mean you have to die here.”
I'm dominican, and this is what we need smart people educated, it doesn't matter what race or where you come from... values are always a pluss and are welcome to DR. Good video. God bless you. Keep the good work and enjoy my island.
It all comes down to how safe you and your family feel when you sit at a restaurant, a mall, a movie theater. Unfortunately, and sadly when i go out in the US, even in a restaurant i make sure to sit facing the door of the restaurant, the paranoia of someone entering the place guns in hands no longer allows me to enjoy the time when i go out. That anxiety takes of way the quality of life.
We are not Black, White, or Asian. Regardless of skin color, financial status, or intellect, we are Dominicans! Imagine this: my sister has white skin, blue eyes, and blonde hair. My little brother is Black, and my other siblings are somewhere in between. We are brothers and sisters, all from the same parents. How can we divide ourselves based on color? We are Dominicans, and that’s the only label we like to use. Some may struggle to understand this because they are used to labels, but we don’t care about race.
Wow! Such a breath of fresh air, reading your comments. I am a senior citizen, retired, I would like to move to DR soon. Coming to visit soon to see if I would like to live there full time.
I understand that the video compares Aventura Mall and Agora Mall, highlighting the differences in safety. It's heartbreaking to hear about the shootings in the US and the impact they have. On a positive note, it's great to hear that in the Dominican Republic, politics don't break families and friendships, and there's a strong sense of community where everyone supports each other.
That right Dominicans say " me no black me Dominican". Black, white, brown Dominicans don't identify by rece or color only as Dominican, but many Americans don't get it. You and Jamie Gruber are my favorite youtuber.
That's right, but the truth is that most Dominicans who say this "I am not black" what they mean is "I am not Haitian" because of the history we have, Haiti invaded the Dominican Republic, they were 22 very easy years for Dominicans and their culture, sometimes they express themselves that way, because they want to get as far away as possible from Haitian culture, despite the fact that many Dominicans are married or have children with Haitians. and for some reason the world insists that Haitians and Dominicans are the same people, but the truth is that they are not.
Married to a Jamaican woman..she says the same about Jamaican culture.. unfortunately when you come to the U.S., EVERYTHING is about race, not culture. Even issues with police brutality, you could have two Dominicans standing next to each other and they will pick out the one that has more african features sadly. While I know the U.S. has many opportunities, it must be beautiful to be in your country and just be a human being, not a race.

Gracias otra vez.
When i was there in san Cristóbal i prefer there then any major city of usa!!! I feel safer, More hope for future and alot alot less suffering and I feel like i fit in with Dominicans more then most American's, the culture in dr soo more my vibe and personality, and im very common sense driven and love and doing right.
That so true in DR they wouldn't call you Afro-American they just will call you american because in DR we don't have different all people are the same that the thing l love from my country.... god bless you 🙏 ❤️
Yes, in general I feel safe whenever I visit. Walking alone or with friends, doing whatever we're doing. Why go to the barrio? I don't go to the slum here at home. IJS
You are so right about politics in the D.R. In fact, Dominicans seem to be united in the idea of not trusting any politician regardless of the party. 😆
I honestly enjoy your content because of the Dominican experience, but I also appreciate your mindset and how articulate you are with your thoughts. I truly believe that some ignorant people who just type away could learn a thing or two by watching your channel. You make something that could seem complex appear very simple.
Jay, thank you for sharing this, I am so happy for you that you’ve found happiness in the Dominican Republic. It’s a place we’ve been many times and hope to spend more time there in retirement. Beautiful country with very nice people! And we have always felt safe there as well.
It has always struck me funny that by telling people you're at ease, you make them feel uneasy. There's no safe heaven on earth; crimes have been committed at the Vatican, and swept under the rug, to put it in perspective; the only safe heaven is the real Heaven up above, to those who believe. We feel safer, freer, and more relaxed here, compared to other countries in the region; and remember, everything is relative. Great video, bro
Bro the anologies you made early in the video was on point, if I say his tall doesn't make me short. The breath of fresh air your talking about i experience when i am there as well, i still maintain a level of awareness but I'm more at Peace...And Yo I agree with some of the comments about the background music... fire 🔥
Hey whats up brother, your videos are extremely inspirational and educational, i been traveling there for 15 years and like you and others have come to find out this really a breath of fresh air
I always go to the barrors cause im used to that in the hood and im always in the 42 and they say that people look at them like to bad but it not like that which I see for my self all the time and I go twice a week it’s bad if you start trouble with people yes
You got me thinking about moving to DR 🌴! I went to Santo Domingo and Monte Plata a few years back and loved it!! The food and the people are amazing💪 👑🥭
Regarding you feeling safe i think people just wanna throw shade on your shine, just coz they don't feel the same!!! Go ahead do your thing brother 👊🏾👊🏾
Brother, I really appreciate that you call things as they are. I’m Black, and I’m proud of it. But more than anything, I’m Dominican. In my 27 years, I’ve never felt discrimination in my country. I’ve never felt the need to go around saying I’m Black, playing the victim, or feeling inferior. No! I’m Dominican, and that’s it. It hurts to see how the U.S., being the world’s greatest power, is in such decline. There’s no leadership, and it seems like a lot of young people just want anarchy-vandalizing businesses and playing the race card. Bro, I have to say, I live in a neighborhood (Herrera) where, yes, there’s crime. But it’s not like you’re constantly afraid someone’s going to hurt you or take your stuff. And on the other hand, sure, the DR isn’t perfect-obviously. There are definitely some racist people, but it’s not the norm. Now, what we do have a lot of here in the DR is classism. Pure and simple classism. But I’ve also learned to live with it. I don’t go around complaining or acting like a victim; I keep living, enjoying life, and keeping my faith in God.
It's Black Americans who push this narrative for whatever reason. Never heard my wife or her family talk about this. There are all shades on my wife's family.
I agree with 90% of all you said , I am glad you feel like that in my country. Just wanted to point out that Dominicans are very passionate about politics, at least those from Early Millenials to previous generations, and they can definitely boxed you based on your political views, but a good thing is that after all we remain close to each other
Bro I love your vids plus I am dominican SERIOUSLY thinking about going back. i love the USA but man this country has changed too much and not for the good. God bless
@JayAbroad haha I believe it. That will be my next move to start investments in the DR thanks God and hard work and the USA my finances are in a good path. Blessing keep having fun in the DR
Me and my whole family keep losing weight and saving a lot of money and the reason is that we are afraid of going out to public places in New York. No restaurant, no movies, no desfiles, (-parades-) no festivals, etc. When I see a lot of people running I believe they are running because of something bad until I find out it is just a marathon. Hope to move back to DR soon. Much health to everyone
You are right, i stay in the DR 6 months out of the year, when im in dr, i dont have to worry about the nonsense in the US, politics and all the other things effecting the US. My stressed level definitely goes a lot lower.
The issue with each person's experience in DR depends on your socioeconomic status. I have been exploring DR for about 10 years and Dominicans always told me that my reality and perception of what DR is really about would always differ from theirs. I have stayed in the barrio even though I did not have to, just to see what they were referring to. I don't think we can dismiss anyone's reality, but we do have to be conscious that DR is a world of have and have nots. If you have the means, you will feel one way, if you don't, then it will be completely different. Many wish to leave DR for that reason. They don't get to experience DR as most tourist and foreigners do, and we can't fault them for that. Just my humble opinion.
Brother that can be said for any country even the US. Oprah, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and others experience is different than a regular guy like me. DR isn't the only country with have nots. This world is filled with have and have nots. This is not unique to DR. And who said anyone's experience was dismissed? But the same can be said to them don't dismiss my positve experience because of their negative experience. It's just talking in circles. This idea that only people who are less fortunate can determine what the real reality of everyone else should be because of their situation is misguided and dumb at best. I still stand on what I said. I come from the mud I don't need anyone lecturing me on anything about the have nots and their perspective. That's just my humble opinion.
@JayAbroad Hey Jay. I was not referring to you directly dismissing anyone. When I said dismissing, I simply meant that it is often done by folks who come only to vacation at a resort and don't speak the language and don't have a full grasp of what is going on outside of their comfort zone. You live there and also have a Dominican wife and in-laws, so therefore, your understanding would be much deeper than tourists or weekenders, that is who my comment was directed at. 👍🏾 keep doing your thing 🍷
I’m coming to the DR for the holidays. I will relax and I will feel safer but I will take precautions. I will not flaunt things like phones and cameras. I will carry a portion of my cash that I need on that day. The DR is better but there’s crime everywhere

Very well said.
The neighborliness in DR is 100% one of my favorite things. People actually speak and help each other. You actually see your neighbors often too. I feel like we work so much in America that I go can go 6 weeks without seeing my neighbors and we're actually pretty cool with each other. America just keeps ppl busy in a bad way
💯
💯
Yep.
This is sooooo true.
So true
Agree, the sense of community is huge! Politics is the great divider!
South Florida man living in Navarrete in peace 🙏🏾
Awesome, brother. Glad to be that inspiration for you. Definitely consider move out country.
Your videos are a breath of fresh air! I can relate to your down to earth common sense views. I think that it’s by design to keep the American people divided. There is a lot to like about the Dominican Republic and I am also considering on moving there. Stay safe, stay healthy and stay happy!
I agree alot of it is by design. Thanks for sharing your perspective.
~Amanda
Lol....well said. Nothing more to add to that.
James, you got it so right when you say that dominic ans do not talk about race. I would say that at Least in 75% of Dominican families tere are all types of shades and we all love each other.
Facts🙏🏾
All that was mentioned was Poetic Gospel and most eloquently sermon 👏 as well as for me, all true
Thanks, unc!
Thanks brother. You're right we might be related. I'm definitely enjoying your country.
Jay that background music is the shit SMOOTH don’t change it…👊🏾
Preciate it fam💪🏾
James, you are a great human being. I am so happy to know you true the way of youtube. I am a Dominican who moved to NY. I really did not know how black I was until I moved to NYC. In DR I was just Dominican. In the USA, I am a black dominican. lol.
Lol...thanks Christian. You are absolutely correct. Once you get to the US you are immediately put into a box. Thats why I love it here although I'm a black American most see me as just a Dominican.
Jay you are a person who is able to think and analyze . Above all, you are respectful. I applaud your content, qualities, and the way of handling different topics.
I appreciate that. Thanks 👍🏾
That's wild! 10 years no way that could happen here.
Absolute facts brother...couldn't have said it better.
I'm dominican, and this is what we need smart people educated, it doesn't matter what race or where you come from... values are always a pluss and are welcome to DR. Good video. God bless you. Keep the good work and enjoy my island.
Absolutely agree. Thanks fam, I appreciate it.
You are 100% correct I think the DR is one of the safest place and in the barrios is not even that bad
Facts. I agree.
Definitely can relate 🤜🏾🤛🏾💯
The DR is literally a breath of fresh air.
Yes i agree.
I rarely go to Walmart, but when I go, I just pray for protection. Going to the supermarket shouldn’t be a potentially deadly task 😐
Facts💯
Wow, that's crazy.
This is my husband. Always facing the door. Always ready 😢

Hey Jay, I'm glad to hear how well things are going for you in DR. You mentioned many "truths" ...thank you!
You're welcome 🙏🏾
We are not Black, White, or Asian. Regardless of skin color, financial status, or intellect, we are Dominicans! Imagine this: my sister has white skin, blue eyes, and blonde hair. My little brother is Black, and my other siblings are somewhere in between. We are brothers and sisters, all from the same parents. How can we divide ourselves based on color? We are Dominicans, and that’s the only label we like to use. Some may struggle to understand this because they are used to labels, but we don’t care about race.
People out side do not understand that. We are mixed! We dont look at race.
@@s.a7468 My family is the same way and we really don’t want the BS in DR
Wow! Such a breath of fresh air, reading your comments. I am a senior citizen, retired, I would like to move to DR soon. Coming to visit soon to see if I would like to live there full time.
They are all absolutely correct.
🎤💅🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴🇩🇴
That background music is fire 🔥 . Everytime 😂
I appreciate that!
"It's ain't about race, it's about you" Preach. Peace✌🏾💙
💯
In DR, we talk about a family not biracial or diverse. We just a family looking just at a family not appearances.
💯
That right Dominicans say " me no black me Dominican". Black, white, brown Dominicans don't identify by rece or color only as Dominican, but many Americans don't get it. You and Jamie Gruber are my favorite youtuber.
They don't get it. Honestly they don't want to understand it. It helps keep the narrative going. It's obvious why Dominicans say this.
That's right, but the truth is that most Dominicans who say this "I am not black" what they mean is "I am not Haitian" because of the history we have, Haiti invaded the Dominican Republic, they were 22 very easy years for Dominicans and their culture, sometimes they express themselves that way, because they want to get as far away as possible from Haitian culture, despite the fact that many Dominicans are married or have children with Haitians. and for some reason the world insists that Haitians and Dominicans are the same people, but the truth is that they are not.
you got the point !!!!!......gracias!!!
@@georgicarrasco6394 let me tell you something about Dominican society. I'm 🇩🇴 living in houston and during elections in DR we're still be drinking together no matter who you vote for🎉❤ . And yes is classism in 🇩🇴.
Facts💯
Someone was shot to death in laval, Canada this week but for the average Canadian the Dominican Rep is a hell and Canada means heaven😂
You have no idea how much I needed this video!!!!!!
You're welcome. I hope it helps put things into perspective 🙏🏾
Gracias otra vez.
I'm colombian but y Love R.D I'm with you i like they culture, food ,and people
When i was there in san Cristóbal i prefer there then any major city of usa!!! I feel safer, More hope for future and alot alot less suffering and I feel like i fit in with Dominicans more then most American's, the culture in dr soo more my vibe and personality, and im very common sense driven and love and doing right.
Great explanation and I LOVE that you put a handle on all those women who would have looked after you. Miss So&So. Thats respect. 👍🏾
I'm from the south. We were brought up with respect.
Thanks so very much for sharing! I’m thinking of leaving the US and I will be visiting DR and putting it on my list of possibilities 😍🤩
You're welcome. Definitely come visit and see if its right for you. 🙏🏾
That so true in DR they wouldn't call you Afro-American they just will call you american because in DR we don't have different all people are the same that the thing l love from my country.... god bless you 🙏 ❤️
Always like before watching. Hoping to make it to DR so my littles can have a better childhood than the US.
Thanks fam. Hope you can make it here🙏🏾
Yes, in general I feel safe whenever I visit. Walking alone or with friends, doing whatever we're doing. Why go to the barrio? I don't go to the slum here at home. IJS
Exactly, who wants to visit the hood🤔
It's hard because sometimes in the U.S. there are mass shootings in places that were previously safe and no one was ready for it.
Very true..
You are so right about politics in the D.R. In fact, Dominicans seem to be united in the idea of not trusting any politician regardless of the party. 😆
That is true. I can admit to that. That I've heard. They say it together and go back to drinking Presidentes...lol
True lol.. Todos son la misma M 😂
Keep up the good work 💪.
Thanks, will do!
I honestly enjoy your content because of the Dominican experience, but I also appreciate your mindset and how articulate you are with your thoughts. Thanks, I appreciate it 🙏🏾
I like your perspecrive regarding living in the Dominican Republic and the United States.
Thanks, I appreciate it 🙏🏾
It has always struck me funny that by telling people you're at ease, you make them feel uneasy.
I'm find it funny too, Luis. Thanks for sharing your feedback 👊🏾
Bro the anologies you made early in the video was on point, if I say his tall doesn't make me short. Welcome🙏🏾
I agree. Thanks for sharing this perspective. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
...in DR 💰 talks...🎉

I agree with 90% of all you said , I am glad you feel like that in my country. Just wanted to point out that Dominicans are very passionate about politics, at least those from Early Millenials to previous generations, and they can definitely boxed you based on your political views, but a good thing is that after all we remain close to each other

Lol 😆 you may wanna start walking around with a shirt saying I'm not Haitian from now one lol,,, ( that was a joke brother ) be safe!!
😅😅😅 about the people running. That's paranoid. I can't blame you though.
Enjoy your stay in this awesome country.
